#10: The ACC and Big Ten have been in discussions with the U.S. Soccer Federation about launching a pilot program for a year-round men’s college soccer model. According to Sportico’s Daniel Libit and Luke Cyphers, the conversations have been about “initially inviting 32 schools to participate in a two-semester trial run, seeking to bypass the traditional NCAA legislative process that has halted previous attempts to put the year-round model into play.” Big Ten SVP for Policy and Compliance Chad Hawley: “Historically, for whatever the reasons, there hasn’t been a great deal of integration between the NCAA and national governing bodies. So, this is a new thing for everybody. But I think we are at a point in time where it behooves everybody to be open-minded about opportunities that make sense on a sport-by-sport basis.” Hawley also tells Sportico that “notwithstanding the challenges of getting the legislation voted on, I don’t think there is an affirmative desire to move soccer outside the NCAA.” Hawley points out the choice doesn’t have to be a binary one, noting how NCAA tennis also falls under the purview of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Libit and Cyphers also report the “two-semester soccer model has not garnered the same kind of interest on the women’s side,” and Texas A&M Women’s Soccer HC G Guerrieri cites the significant differences in the talent pool demographics and the number of DI programs as key reasons why. Guerrieri adds: “One of the hard details to get over—but what the women are firmly aware of—is that (this is) an academic model. We have to fit what we do into an academic program. And as cool as it could be to do something else, we are still bound by the fact we work for universities.” Lots more. (link)

#7: Nebraska AD Troy Dannen talks to Husker Online about the new turf going into Memorial Stadium & other notable aesthetics for the facility: “The team boxes will be black, and there will be a little more flare on the sides. The color scheme, the aesthetic of the turf, and the fact that it's one solid color and not variances of green. [...] We underutilized red a lot and I don't understand it. We don't light the stadium up from the outside and we should light it red every night. Red is an intimidating color and we should use it a lot more than we use it. I've told the Governor that the road signs, exits off of I-80 should be in red. Not in green. Not in blue, but in red. Little things like that and how we brand ourselves. Having those red end zones and I think it's a strong color. When we put the black letters in the end zone, I think it's a strong look.” (link)
