Western Carolina AD Alex Gary is stepping down after nearly five years in the role. WCU Chancellor Kelli R. Brown: "WCU will continue to move forward with our ambitious fundraising goals in support of the critical needs for athletics facilities within the increasing complexity of the regulatory and competition landscape of collegiate sports. I am immensely grateful to Alex for all he has done to advance Catamount athletics." Deputy AD Kyle Pifer will serve as Interim AD. (link)

The AAC has approved a Minimum Investment Program through which schools must share with athletes at least $10M in cumulative additional benefits over a three-year period, starting with the 2025-26 academic year, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger. As part of the program, Dellenger explains schools “can include as additional benefits (1) up to $2.5M in new scholarships and (2) direct revenue they share with athletes, as well as (3) up to $2.5M in Alston payments.” Commissioner Tim Pernetti says schools who fail to meet the $10M minimum at the conclusion of the 2027-28 academic year could be subject to a membership review. The plan does not apply to Army West Point and Navy, which are prohibited from revenue-sharing. The AAC chose the rev-share amount and timeframe after a review by Huron Consulting Group. Dellenger explains the conference “will not police how each school distributes the minimum requirement. Schools have autonomy and flexibility over distribution. Pernetti stressed that the program is only a ‘minimum’ and that many schools within his conference plan to exceed the $10M mark.” (link)

The Mountain West agreed to “move its conference offices to Las Vegas, keep the conference basketball tournaments at the Thomas & Mack Center, and maintain the conference’s existing media rights distributions of $3.5M per school,” according to an MOU obtained by JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher, who adds: “It also promised to distribute tens of millions in exit fees from departing members and ‘poaching penalty’ payments from the Pac-12 to its holdover members. The first $61M is supposed to be delivered ‘beginning no later than July 1, 2026.’” On paper, Canzano continues, the “MW expects to collect roughly $85M in exit fees from five members and another $55M in penalties from the Pac-12. But if that $140 million pot of money evaporates or even shrinks substantially amid settlements and litigation, it makes landing UNLV a possibility, doesn’t it?” Within this context, Pac-12 ADs are set to meet in Las Vegas next week, and agenda items include an update on media rights negotiations from Octagon and more discussion about expansion. Canzano observes: “Keith Whitfield announced his resignation as president at UNLV this week. Provost Christopher Heavey is taking over. The school’s Board of Regents is at a crossroads. The upheaval will impact UNLV athletics, which operated at a $20M deficit in 2024. Do the Rebels have the stomach for a jump to the Pac-12? Would UNLV stay in the MW if the promised payday isn’t there? (link)

Connecticut AD David Benedict outlines ways fans can help support the Huskies if/when the House settlement is approved – namely the Fight On Fund, Storrs Central and the Husky Athletic Fund – and writes: “In any business, change is inevitable. Market forces require organizations to adapt. At UConn, we view these transformative conditions as opportunities. We will embrace the moment and strategically work within this new framework to uphold our championship tradition. Amid the uncertainty associated with change, there is one thing we know for sure. This will require a total team effort, which can only flourish with the involvement of everyone in UConn Nation. The Husky spirit reflects our collective grit, determination and perseverance. Together, we will chart a course for sustained achievements and the resultant pride associated with our successes.” (link)

Butler inks a 10-year multimedia rights partnership with Playfly Sports beginning in July. Bulldogs AD Grant Leiendecker: “This partnership with Playfly Sports will allow us to aggressively invest in the areas that matter most— recruiting, student-athlete development, facilities, and fan engagement—while also highlighting the Butler brand at a national level. We have a vision for sustained excellence, and Playfly’s expertise will help us bring that vision to life. I would like to thank LEONA for their assistance in brokering this partnership, one that will be truly impactful for the future of Butler Athletics.” (link)

Cal Poly is discontinuing its men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs, effective immediately. President Jeffrey Armstrong: “Unfortunately, Cal Poly is not immune to the rapidly evolving and changing NCAA Division I landscape, which presents many challenges and uncertainties for collegiate athletics programs. The House vs. NCAA settlement, which addresses past and future compensation for student athletes related to name, image and likeness (NIL) rights, will have a significant financial impact – resulting in a loss of at least $450K per year for our programs. This comes amid additional national class-action lawsuits pending against the NCAA, further compounding financial and operational challenges for collegiate athletics. I want to be clear that we remain committed to the student-athlete model and excelling both in the classroom and in athletic competitions. However, that requires us to make difficult decisions, such as today’s, to maintain and sustain a viable athletics program. At this time, no other Cal Poly sports programs are at risk of being discontinued. However, the university continues to look at roster management to ensure we field the most competitive teams while providing a top-tier experience for our student-athletes.” (link)

ACC men’s basketball programs are spending less on player acquisition than rival conferences, including the SEC, according to Pittsburgh HC Jeff Capel, who tells the Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel: “And as difficult as that may be to say or hear, that is where we are. I would challenge…people to look at — and I don’t know how you get this — but look at what each school in our league, men’s basketball, is spending on their roster compared to the other leagues. … Look, I got in trouble for this four years ago, and I’m not going to go through it again, but I think we have really good coaches in this league, but man, you’ve got to have good players, too.” Clemson HC Brad Brownell confirms Capel’s position, telling Teel: “Things that we hear on the recruiting trail, it seems like there’s a lot of resources in the SEC at a lot of different schools. Even in the Big 12. And even some schools you wouldn’t anticipate, the average fan wouldn’t anticipate having as much money for players, and I think there’s certainly some correlation to some degree. … It’s an interesting time, and I think there’s a lot of people vying and jockeying trying to move up in the world of college basketball if they can, they see an opening. I think there’s some schools that don’t have football that think they have some chances to make some moves.” Capel goes on to call it an unwillingness – rather than an inability – to spend the kind of money needed to compete at the highest level. “I can’t speak for the ACC as a whole. I do think there were some administrators, leaders, like ADs, presidents, I think there were some (who thought): ‘This is going to go away. It’s not going to last. So, we’re not going to do as much because we don’t have to.’” (link)

Michael Loeffler, the father of a high school punter, has filed a lawsuit against the NCAA alleging that 18-year-old punters—whether from the U.S. or Australia—are not receiving a fair opportunity to compete due to unfair recruitment practices. Specifically, Loeffler contends that U.S. high school players are competing against 25-year-old Australian athletes with extensive experience in the Australian Football League (AFL), where punting is a fundamental skill. “They're competing against, oftentimes, 25-year-old Australians with six, seven, eight years of AFL experience. I don't have a problem with that—if they're 18 years old.” One college coach tells Fox San Antonio’s Yami Virgin he has firsthand knowledge of Australian players misrepresenting their eligibility and says of one: “Apparently, he had started working with ProKick, and the coaches I spoke with were under the impression that he had four years to play. He had never been to college. But when I was recruiting him, I was told he only had three years to play.” Ken Gamble, who owns the Australian private investigation firm IFW, tells Virgin that some students “we've investigated have attended university full-time, and we don’t believe that was disclosed. If there's been a misrepresentation of their educational standards, then this is not only a violation of NCAA eligibility rules but also visa fraud.” According to One on One Kicking owner Mike McCabe, ProKick’s impact has been so significant that “the punting market in the U.S. has dropped by over 54%.” (link)

Memphis’ Auxiliary Services Foundation made no distinction between restricted and unrestricted funds in its recordkeeping, according to an independent audit by ATA, which found that the foundation also made payments, in some cases, before receiving funds, which resulted in projects showing negative balances. The Daily Memphian’s Jane Roberts explains that while ATA “did not find errors in the tracking details, the foundation’s failure to keep separate ledgers for restricted and unrestricted gifts resulted in an error — which the university later caught — of more than $465,575. And, in what auditors classified as a significant deficiency in internal controls, the foundation did not reconcile bank statements at the end of the year, leading to balance discrepancies. … Among the other shortcomings, the auditors noted that on June 30, 2024, the Auxiliary Services Foundation had bank deposits that exceeded FDIC protections by more than $6M. And the failure to keep restricted and unrestricted funds separate meant that the university had only $1.59M in restricted gifts in 2023, not the $2.06M it reported.” Memphis Board of Trustees Finance and Audit Committee Chair David McKinney noted this week that ATA gave the foundation an unmodified, clean audit, and Roberts notes ATA recommended university management provide a response to the findings and create a corrective plan. University officials have agreed. (link)

Delaware President Dennis Assanis informed the university faculty that the Blue Hens will conduct a national search for an AD amid the USA Swimming ordeal for Chrissi Rawak. Assanis: “These developments came at blazing speeds, and I was made aware in similar ways as every other person who reads the news. I don’t have access to it and I have not seen it. It’s confidential. [...] Somebody did ask me if we had that information when we hired Chrissi nine years ago, and I just want to say for the sake of the audience here, no, I didn’t have that information.” Interestingly, when asked if Rawak could reapply for the job, Assanis answered, “What Chrissi Rawak may want to do, I don’t know. I can’t speculate. She may want to apply to be reconsidered for the position, I don’t know at this point.” (link)

Speaking during a Front Office Sports virtual panel yesterday, Bowl Season Executive Director Nick Carparelli says he’s an advocate for pulling football into its own governing arrangement: “Because football costs the most money and makes the most money, we’ve seen conference realignment being driven by football to the detriment of literally every other sport.” Ivy League Executive Director Robin Harris agrees: “If there is a way to separate the football out and put all other sports back into a regional model, that would certainly be beneficial.” More Carparelli: “We went into a lot of these conference and NIL and transfer portal changes without a master plan. And while separately they are all good things, colliding as they did has resulted in some negative outcomes.” (link)

Auburn AD John Cohen discusses industry developments with On3’s Cole Pinkston. On the topic of student-athlete contracts: “You can look at it like our coaches, staff members in the athletic department or around the University. Anyone who is on a contract has certain responsibilities that you have to live up to. Every part of that contract has to be met and upheld. Unfortunately, student-athletes are going to be held, around the country, to a standard that I am not 100 percent sure that a lot of 18-22 year olds should have to live up to. But, you can’t accept financial opportunities without having responsibility come with it. It’s just the nature of the beast.” How about contract lengths? “I think it will be all of the above. Again, if you look at our coaching contracts here and everywhere else, those contracts are all different. Some are one-year, five-year’s, etc. I think you’ll have everything under the sun. Every student-athlete is different. They all bring different skillsets, bring different backgrounds. You’re writing a new novel for every single young person, man and woman, who steps onto our campus.” (link)

Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts sat down with TexAgs Live & provided perspective on his 358-day tenure in College Station thus far. Of note: “Like anything, this is a business. If you're now sharing 22 percent of revenue with athletes, you become a quasi-pro franchise at the end of the day. I'm focused on us never losing our values. However, we need to find a way to run our business operations well, or we won't have the money to invest in what we need to over here. We always had enough increasing revenue to absorb these costs. [...] The new Playfly Sports deal has an annual average value of $34.3 million. There's a seven-year look-in window that both Playfly and Texas A&M can look at. We took our naming rights off of facilities. You'll see people looking to get corporate sponsors for their equivalent of Reed Arena or something. What the 12th Man has done, the largest Aggie Network, it’s all of you who love Texas A&M. [...] In deciding to go with Playfly, the numbers are really important. The amount in the first three years is really important. Signing values are important, and there is the time value of money. We have this new expense category. The NIL strategy, moving forward, is really important. We are trying to find fair market-value deals for our students. One hundred percent of Playfly's focus is on Texas A&M Athletics. Thirty-five percent of their business is with pro-franchises. As we move into this pro-mentality in certain areas, I think that's really good. [...] As part of the House case, there are no roster limits in certain sports. We will have 19 percent fewer student-athletes than we currently have. Imagine the position it puts some of our coaches in. The reason we got sued is we tried to legislate competitive equity nationally through the NCAA. We had 255 student-athletes on scholarships before the deal, and now we have the capability of having 410 on scholarships. We have more male students than female. We can create a strategy.” (link)

Crakes Media namesake Patrick Crakes on the ACC-Clemson-Florida State news this week and in response to the Mercury News’ Jon Wilner’s “Doomsday Clock” article: “With Clemson & FSU calling off their Kamikaze mission we now know when ACC schools can recover their GOR for ‘only’ $75M. Jon examines a couple probable scenarios. But two big questions remain: Where will the money come from & how much will really be there? … To be clear, I’m not talking about the $75M to leave. I’m talking about contractual multi-year multi-billions media rights that are supposed to fuel more consolidation/realignment. I’m saying that’s not a given, at least not for 40 teams.” (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde writes on the oddity of new Miami (FL) Men’s Basketball HC Jai Lucas’ plan to leave the Duke program after the regular season is complete, not after the Blue Devils' post-season run. Forde: “Jai Lucas isn’t to blame for the situation that makes his final game on the Duke Blue Devils coaching staff Saturday instead of whenever their NCAA tournament run ends. The Miami Hurricanes, who hired Lucas as their next coach, are not to blame. Duke coach Jon Scheyer certainly isn’t to blame. The system is to blame. The situation is a mess.” Scheyer: “Our decision makes sense, but it comes from timing, which it is not ideal. Even putting aside hiring new coaches, the fact that the transfer portal is open throughout the tournament, again, I understand why it is that way, but I think the focus should be on the tournament. The focus should be on the teams that are playing for something and have a chance.” More. (link)

FCS Football Central Editor/Owner Zach McKinnell this week reported that multiple pro scouts who attended the Senior Bowl and HBCU Legacy Bowl revealed that FCS prospects who choose to remain at the FCS level instead of transferring to FBS programs are labeled as “potential red flags” at the next level. Per McKinnell, scouts asked: “Were they scared of better competition? Are they not good enough to play at that level?” ESPN’s Kalyn Kahler, meanwhile, notes that an average of 20.5 players from smaller non-FBS programs received invites to the combine between 2016 to 2021, prior to changes to the transfer portal. However, the mean number of players has dropped to 14.5 since 2022, the lowest mark in the last decade. Kahler also reports that 126 of the 330 players who received invites to the combine transferred at some level of college football at least once. Additionally, 28 of those 330 transferred at least once from a non-FBS program. For comparison, at the 2018 combine just two players among 336 invited players transferred to a higher-level college football program after playing at a non-FBS program. (link)

MoffettNathanson Co-Founder Michael Nathanson joins Stratechery’s Ben Thompson to discuss streaming’s end game and notes that “distributors and networks realize they need, finally, to get to skinnier bundles. You need to basically slice off the non-essential networks, you need to create more efficient packages, and you also need to start adding in streaming services like Peacock or Paramount+ or Disney or Hulu to the bundle. And I could see in this year ahead a YouTube TV coming out with a product that is 50, 60 channels, but included in that channel package is access to all the streaming products that are affiliated with the linear networks.” Thompson points out that “there is a view where my TV experience relative to everywhere basically in the world is so much more advanced and it’s just waiting for someone to do this at scale and actually productize it and make it broadly available.” Nathanson responds: “I’m hoping that YouTube does it because they are the only ones who built the YouTube TV service and our view, and we have the same view, that sports is the glue, sports is all we have left. You don’t need 30 to 40 cable networks anymore. The cable networks business has just been replaced by streaming, that’s where you want your entertainment. So the live bundle is easier made through a virtual MVPD – add in there streaming services on demand, and you have a better product than what exists today.” For rightsholders, Nathanson advises holding enough tentpole events every month to keep people interested and cites Disney as an example of a company that’s done that. “They’ve walked away from a bunch of rights, you have to do that, the model will not sustain what it used to be.” Similarly, Nathanson believes Netflix is the “most disciplined buyer of sports. They’ll only buy things that make sense for them. They’re the one company, maybe Amazon, they’re the number two company that doesn’t have to buy sports if it doesn’t make sense. Their business model is not predicated on sports. If the ROI is there, including the ad opportunity, they will do it. Unfortunately, all the broadcasters have a gun to their head because they don’t have the NFL.” Lots more in the full podcast. (link)
