Ferris State AD Steve Brockelbank sits down with D2.ticker’s Anthony Grassi at the 2025 NCAA Convention to discuss changes around DII Football and the division more broadly. As the DII membership has shifted over the years, with members moving out to DI and into DII, Brockelbank: “You have a clash of some priorities within the division. I do think at some point we need to figure out what is important to all of us and how can we make it work for all of us. Are there some opportunities to do some things with some lower-resource Division I schools at some point? Because when you look at our budget and our budget structure, we're more similar to some of the Ohio Valley Conference schools than we are to some of our peers in our own conference and I think that's true for a number of schools in Division II.” Asked if he feels Ferris is an now outlier, Brockelbank believes there is just a greater disparity between institutions now. Further, he thinks now is the time for the NCAA to reevaluate the entire division structure, as the Power 4 is redefining itself. “I think it needs to happen, and I hope we don't have to wait for the Power 4 to reimagine themselves and get it all set so the rest of us can then go ahead and begin our work.” What is Brockelbank’s ideal football setup? With AQs now in place, he would prefer a 32-team field bracketed according to strength, with the goal of having the two best teams meet on the biggest stage to compete for a national title. House case plaintiffs’ attorney Jeffrey Kessler joined SANIL Founder/Rutgers (DI) law professor Jason Belzer’s class to discuss the House settlement, and Belzer provides a recap: “Jeff believes the strongest objections to the case will come in reference to Title IX but because it's a anti-trust case, the same standard does not apply to calculating how damages are determined. All the settlement does is commit the schools to paying the damages and sharing future revenue, how the money gets paid out is not for the House case to decide. How Title IX gets applied will be litigated in the future. He also does not believe that the objection that the settlement can't happen because there should be a bargaining unit on behalf of the athletes will not succeed. The settlement allows for collective bargaining to exist in the future, but is not relevant to this case. Lastly, he does not believe that the objection around roster limits and eliminating walk-on positions will be enough to derail the settlement.” (link)

Saint Augustine’s has lost its accreditation appeal with SACSCOC and the university will now work towards a 90-day arbitration process to ensure students graduating this spring can graduate from an accredited institution. The university has also secured “up to $70 million in sustainability-focused funding at competitive market rates and terms […] to eliminate past debt, invest in campus improvements, and implement its long-term strategic plan.” Vice Chairman Hadley Evans: “This funding is a game-changer. We now have the financial leverage to protect SAU’s legacy, enhance academic offerings, and create sustainable revenue streams through strategic campus development.” (link)

San Francisco State will eliminate Baseball, Men’s Soccer and Women’s Track & Field, effective July 1, as the university faces a 7.95% CSU budget cut and enrollment challenges. The total savings are projected at between $800K and $1M annually and come as “we have not seen the donor interest materialize at the level needed to sustain these three teams.” Of note from the Athletics Task Force, SFSU owes $1.2M in debt to the institution and calls for “earmarking $120,000 (up to $240,000 when revenue is available) annually” towards that deficit. In addition to cuts to scholarship funding, the department has signed a five-year, $50K annual deal with San Francisco Federal Credit Union to go toward scholarships as it works to reduce scholarships offered by 2026-27. Also, in moving Wrestling from the RMAC to MPSF, travel expenditures will drop by 25-40%. (link, link - task force recommendations)

+ Southeastern Oklahoma State received a $3M donation towards its Paul Laird Field Renovation and brought in an additional $556K+ towards the project, for which the institution will contribute $4.5M to the $9.9M cost. (link, link)

+ The NCAA extends its partnership with EPIC Global Solutions to continue their gambling harm education program collaboration. The new agreement will allow NCAA members to receive in-person educational sessions fully funded by the NCAA national office through the end of 2027. Sessions will expand into topics like handling social media harassment, promoting competition integrity and the mental health impacts of sports betting. (link)

AD Luc Simard: “SFU has great aspirations for our men's basketball program as part of the NCAA Div II. We expect to compete regularly in post-season play. The university has continued to invest in our men's basketball program, adding staff and increasing support for student-athletes. With recruitment for the 2025-2026 season about to get underway, we felt the time was right to make this decision and begin our search for a new head coach.”
