Congrats to Utah for taking home the NCAA Skiing National Championship, the program's fourth in the last five years. Utes Director of Skiing Fredrik Landstedt: "This was just amazing up here, especially in front of this crowd. There's a huge amount of people out here and a band playing. It's just incredible to have this kind of finish. I'm super proud of this team, how they came together and the camaraderie they've shown—really the way to fight back during the championship." (link)

Saint Mary’s President Roger Thompson talks to JohnCanzano.com’s namesake about how the Gaels are looking into the future: “We’re supportive of the WCC and happy to be in a great conference, but we have to keep our options open. Anyone in my position would say that.” Canzano: “The school doesn’t have an invitation from the Pac-12. There’s no guarantee one will come, particularly if the Pac-12 decides to add two more all-sports schools. That would leave the conference with 10 basketball members. But if the Pac-12 adds just one school (i.e., UNLV), the Gaels become an interesting basketball addition. Saint Mary’s could stay in the WCC, schedule good non-conference games, and theoretically enjoy regular access to the NCAA Tournament. Without Gonzaga around, Bennett’s program would also be positioned as the WCC’s featured men’s basketball team for broadcast exposure. [...] The WCC athletic directors met on Saturday in Las Vegas. The AD meeting came on the heels of a recent meeting between the league’s presidents. WCC presidents voted in favor of unequal distributions of future NCAA Tournament units, per multiple sources. Saint Mary’s will keep more of what it earns in the NCAA Tournament. The same presidents, however, voted against raising the conference exit fee.” (link)

Toledo AD Bryan Blair sits down with Connect's Bryan Fischer at the 2025 NCAA Convention and talks about capitalizing off momentum, the importance of listening to student-athletes, navigating tough decisions, restructuring staff roles to adapt to the new model and more. Blair explains the Rockets are “going to look at some positions on staff that currently exist that we can repurpose – or maybe it's a blended role. My person that oversees student-athletes; scholarships, do they now oversee all student-athlete benefits? … Right now that person is handling the spreadsheets and working with the financial aid office on campus – well maybe going forward that person’s an MBA that’s heavy into data and analytics and they can really do a deep dive in that area where I’ve already got an FTE devoted to that position. Maybe I just bump it up a little bit and recruit a different type of personality. I also think our college campus, we overlook them sometimes in terms of talent. Our institution just onboarded a brand new major in data analytics. How do I utilize those students in that classroom in an effort to bolster what we're trying to do, [and] at the same time lean into the overall institutional mission – allowing them to say, ‘You know what, funding athletics isn’t so bad.” Full conversation now on Connect. As part of the celebration of Women’s History Month, Nevada Sports Net’s Shannon Kelly features Nevada AD Stephanie Rempe, one of 10 female athletic directors in the FBS. Rempe, who was a walk-on for Arizona’s volleyball team, “As a student-athlete, I just didn’t have a whole lot of role models in our profession. I read a lot of books about women and that really impacted me and then I remember watching something on the news and seeing someone be sworn into the Senate that kind of looked like me, and it registered the value of a role model and all of a sudden that registered for me significantly. I realized it’s kind of a silly thing, but when you see somebody then you believe you can do it. … I remember I was in college and our coach was talking to me and it really triggered my senior year about wanting the ball. When that triggers, it's a whole different dynamic that goes on for life. I want the ball here. If there's any issue that is about to be faced, I want the ball and I know I learned that from sports. … Discipline is a huge one that I learned in sports. There's no question. I pride myself on my discipline. Foot on the gas. As soon as you take your foot off the gas, you're going to lose.” (link)

Florida A&M AD Angela Suggs is overhauling the Rattlers’ Football & Men’s Basketball season ticket sales in an effort to generate more revenue & create a framework that is manageable to service. Suggs has simplified the pricing tiers for both sports: “What we wanted to do was dial back and be able to dig into the data to learn what the appetite of our fan base and stakeholders is ― season tickets and sections being purchased. [...] While we will be effective and efficient, cutting our way to success without looking at revenues and new revenues, I don’t believe that’s the right way to approach it. It doesn’t save us money. The idea is it’s going to make us more money that is direct because we’re cutting out expenses that are associated with a package program.” (link)

OutKick’s Trey Wallace argues that the GM role is now the most important one in college football. “So, why is this so important to the game right now? Well, it comes down to college football, and basketball, moving towards a more professional model when handling rosters, payroll (Revenue Sharing), and scouting. … teams are looking for general managers who have experience to come in and handle the duties of someone you might see in the NFL or NBA. Now that we are months away from revenue-sharing, with players signing contracts with the schools for their NIL rights, which is just another way to say ‘pay-for-play,' there has to be someone controlling this all. Sure, schools could've put together contracts for these athletes, but they don't have the experience of dealing with a roster payroll. Now that players will be signing contracts with the schools themselves, there has to be someone who can manage how much each athlete will get, and negotiate those contracts.” One Power 4 HC told OutKick: “I just don't have the time anymore to spend hours looking over transfer portal tape, with agents blowing up my phone. I need someone who can find the right guys, know how much money we're gonna spend in the future and be my guide on who can help us win titles. Everything has changed over the years, and it's only going to get crazier in the future. I don't want players coming into my office complaining that they aren't getting paid enough when this rev-sharing begins. There is no reason why I need to be part of contract negotiations, which is wild to actually say out loud, since this has been so taboo in the past. Everything is changing, and while I think we're ready, I still have plenty of questions.” North Carolina Football HC Bill Belichick on hiring GM Michael Lombardi: “Michael knows how to build a champion and brings a great deal of quality experience to the UNC program. I am excited to be reunited with Michael, and we will rely on his expertise in evaluating and acquiring talent for the Tar Heel program.” More. (link)

Former Bowling Green Football HC Scot Loeffler tells the Toledo Blade’s David Briggs that leaving Bowling Green was “the toughest decision I’ve ever had to make. But it made sense. We've talked about the chaos in college football right now. Being the head coach at Bowling Green, there's a lot to it. It's not just the X's and O's. It's roster management, NIL, fund-raising, the portal, high school recruiting, it's nonstop. The one thing about my wife and I is we were all in, 100% all in. It was a 365-day, 24-7 job, and to do it five more years at that pace and being 50 years old, I don't know if I could have done it, to be honest. I really don't know if I would have made it.” Loeffler also tells Briggs that the NCAA “needs to put guard rails up, and, if they don’t, they’re going to screw up a really, really good thing. Right now, there are none. It's free agency year round. I'm a big believer that college football is still built on graduating, and, when you're transferring as many times as you can and you're losing credit hours, I just don't know how good it is for the players. … I believe in NIL. I believe in the portal. They just need guard rails.” (link)

Florida starting quarterback DJ Lagway is making a six-figure donation to Florida Victorious women’s sports teams (basketball, softball, volleyball and gymnastics). In a video statement, Lagway detailed how the women at UF have inspired him: “Hard work is the lifeblood of everything we do. Every home run. Every spike. Every bucket. So many hours of unseen hard work. But I see it. I see the 25 SEC championships. I see it in the perfect tens. I can hear the hours of dedication behind every pitch. I am truly inspired by these women. Your passion pushes me to go harder every single day. Because of this, I wanna show my appreciation for everything that they do and encourage others to do the same. That's why I have decided to personally make a contribution to our Florida Victorious women athletes, Go Gators!" (link)

After years of calling the ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament, ESPN’s Dan Shulman and Jay Bilas have been tapped to call this year’s SEC Tournament. The two will call the early session on each day of the tournament as well as the entirety of the semifinals and championship game. They’ll be joined by sideline reporter Jess Sims. An ESPN spokesperson explains the “switch is not permanent and [broadcast assignments] will be determined on a year-to-year basis.” (link)

An online retailer’s bid to avoid paying court costs for the Penn State trademark-infringement case was “unreasonable litigation conduct” and should be denied because PSU was “undoubtedly the prevailing party in the case,” according to what the school told a federal court. Sportico’s Michael McCann details Adidas’ latest trademark infringement lawsuit against a company whose products use designs that “look too much like its famous three-stripe mark, Adidas insists. In a complaint filed in a California federal district court, Adidas accuses Fashion Nova of infringement, unfair competition, breach of contract and other claims. Fashion Nova is a fast fashion company that Adidas says has a ‘penchant for overlooking the intellectual property of others.’ … Adidas has previously sued Fashion Nova over apparel and footwear that allegedly used ‘identical, confusingly similar, or substantially indistinguishable imitations’ of the three-stripe mark. The two companies reached a settlement in 2022 in which Fashion Nova agreed to stop selling products that looked like the Adidas three-stripe mark.” Kollin J. Zimmermann and R. Charles Henn Jr. of Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton are representing Adidas. (link)

Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez sat down with Nevada Sports Net’s Chris Murray as the pair discussed a number of key issues. On the legal process with the Pac-12: “Mediation is always an exercise in efficiency. Our membership is solid. We're looking forward to the future. We want to get back to the business of focusing all of our resources, time and energy on student-athletes and championships and what we're doing on the court and on the field. So, we'll explore mediation. Hopefully it comes out positive and we can come to terms. But if not, we can pick up the litigation where we left off and we feel really good about our position in the litigation.” On the league’s longterm future: “We have stability. We have a grant of rights through '32, which lines up with the CFP/ESPN agreement. Who knows what the future holds after that? Everyone's expecting massive change. But right now with the ACC settling, if the NCAA gets the help that they're seeking through the politicians and protection against employment, we feel really good about our place in the ecosystem.” Minimum revenue sharing as a result of the House settlement? “All of our schools have opted in, but we're still waiting to learn, 'What does that mean?' If we're not at the $20 million level, then what counts? What doesn't? What does accountability mean? So, we're just kind of waiting to figure out what that means and we have discussed minimums. Not just in House, but in what it means to be a Mountain West member. We have all of that kind of at the ready, at the finish line. The membership thing happened. We're going to bring that back up once we get to new-look Mountain West '26.” (link)
|
Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart provides some perspective on how the Wildcats are preparing for the House settlement with a focus of not cutting sports or staff: “Not easy. We’ve got some plans, some places that we think we can change revenue to help create more revenue. We’re gonna have to be more efficient in some ways. And we’ll have some of those conversations with our coaches and say, ‘Hey, these are some of the things we used to do, but we’re gonna have to trim this thought back.’ Maybe it’s how we schedule. Maybe it’s how we travel a little bit differently. But there’s thoughts, there’s things, and none of them are going to be one solution that is going to fix everything. … It’s going to have to be shared sacrifice and shared creative thoughts.” (link)

In a letter to supporters, Texas State AD Don Coryell seems to indicate the Bobcats will opt into revenue sharing: “As the legal framework and broader landscape of college athletics continues to evolve, Texas State is embracing a new era - one that ensures our athletics department will continue to thrive. With the potential creation and authorization of revenue-sharing models, we are preparing to implement a program that directly benefits our athletes. Through licensing agreements and ambassador roles within our department and university, Texas State is developing a process to share revenue with student-athletes, providing them with essential resources to enhance their experience while strengthening our ability to recruit, retain, and graduate top talent. [...] In the coming months, you'll hear more about an Athletics capital campaign focused on growing the Bobcat Club Excellence Fund, advancing high-impact facility projects, and increasing endowed scholarships and season ticket support. These initiatives will allow us to invest even more in our student-athletes and light the star more frequently after Bobcat victories.” (link)

UC San Diego is another department that will opt in to terms of the House settlement. Tritons AD Earl Edwards: “When we reclassified to Division I the vision was to continue the pursuit of excellence in all that we do. As intercollegiate athletics continues to evolve, UC San Diego strives to provide an elite scholar-athlete experience through our broad-based programming, top-rated academic experience and competitive excellence. Opting in positions UC San Diego Athletics to continue to build our foundation as we strive to become a best-in-class Division I program.” (link)

Ole Miss was fined $500K by the SEC for fans storming the court immediately following Wednesday night’s Men’s Basketball win over Tennessee & Rebels AD Keith Carter is taking a hard line: “Unfortunately, Wednesday’s special moment was marred by the unacceptable behavior of a select few in our fanbase that chose to impatiently rush the court before the Tennessee team and game officials had exited and before the crowd was welcomed to come down. These selfish actions have consequences, as they will cost our coaches and student-athletes valuable resources. We are being levied a $500,000 fine to bring our department’s total to $850,000 for the season. Additionally, SEC regulations dictate that this money be distributed to the opposing institution. With potential future fines continuing at a similar level, it is imperative that we take immediate action to end this behavior. Our staff is currently reviewing postgame footage from Wednesday, and any individuals who are identified will face the potential loss of game privileges. Entering the playing surface without permission is strictly prohibited and will not be tolerated. Penalties will be increased moving forward, including holding perpetrators on the court or field and revoking their game privileges on site. We are also exploring other avenues to hold those that break the rules accountable. Simply put, this must stop.” (link)

Oregon AD Rob Mullens says Ducks Football HC Dan Lanning’s representation didn't fight at all UO’s request for a $20M buyout, insisting he is all in on staying in Eugene long-term. (link); USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz shares info on the salaries for Ducks ACs, which include a three-year, $6M deal for DC Tosh Lupoi and a three-year, $5.25M extension for OC Will Stein. As for Lanning’s deal, Berkowitz notes he is now set to have basic pay of $10.4M for the 2025 season and a total of $65.4M over 6 years. Lanning had been set to make $8.4 million in 2025. The $65.4M is fully guaranteed should UO part ways with Lanning without cause. (link)

USA Today’s Dan Wolken says potential NCAA Tournament expansion hinges on math and money, breaking it down in his eyes as follows: “Make no mistake: It’s going to cost a lot of money to make expansion worth the NCAA’s while. Let’s get into some simple math. Every team that makes the NCAA Tournament earns a so-called ‘unit’ of revenue for its conference and then earns subsequent units for each round it advances. Those units are worth about $2 million apiece. If you add eight teams to the field, you need to generate $16 million right there, not to mention the millions in extra costs for facilities, travel, food, staff and so forth that you inherit by adding more games and more teams. If that endeavor doesn't add to the bottom line, it cuts into the revenue pie that everyone else is splitting. It’s hard to imagine broad support for an expansion plan that decreases the average value of a unit. Especially right now, when power conference athletic departments are scrounging for any new revenue to fill the $20-million-plus hole in their budgets brought by the House vs. NCAA settlement. … If you can figure out how much CBS and Turner are willing to pay for those extra games, you can figure out whether the tournament is going to expand. You can safely assume that’s why a significant expansion to 96 teams, which has been floated in the past, is now pretty much off the table. The math just doesn’t math. But going to 72 or 76 is a different calculation. It’s doable – if the TV partners are on board.” (link)

+ Iowa Softball Interim HC Brian Levin has exited the program due to “cultural problem” he says came to a head after some student-athletes kneeled for the national anthem during games earlier in the month. Levin to The Daily Iowan: “It’s a problem in which some players are comfortable speaking up and some players are silenced for having different views or opinions. [...] That’s not an environment I condone or promote, let alone be blamed for later for creating. And not one I want to be a part of.” Hawkeyes AD Beth Goetz: “I am incredibly proud of the student-athletes and their commitment to focus on competing as Hawkeyes. It is unfortunate we needed to make the change in leadership at this time, but providing an environment for our student-athletes to be their best academically and athletically remains our priority.” AC Karl Gollan will lead the program on an interim basis. Want to work at Cal? Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz sits down with UC Berkeley Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education Oliver O'Reilly, who provides an exclusive look at the institution's open Executive Director position with the Athletic Study Center. O'Reilly explains the role of the ASC and why the university chose to operate it as a separate unit from Athletics and breaks down the reporting structure and key areas of oversight for the next Executive Director. O'Reilly also shares insight into the "special blend" of resume experience and skills a successful Executive Director could bring to Cal, discusses areas of opportunity and growth for the unit and describes a day in the life on the Berkeley campus. When evaluating candidates, O’Reilly explains that “everybody will have a different blend” of experience in academia and athletics, “and there’s no real ideal blend. If you said, 50/50 then there will be no one that's 50/50 because that blend is also a matter of perspective. … Also, people grow into positions. No candidate has all of the skills needed for any position that they apply to. I think that's true for any position and so it's a matter of appreciating am I motivated enough to grow into this position? Am I self-aware enough to realize that this is an area that I need to work on and that this is an area I can really leverage because I know I'm very strong in these skills and passionate about this? And it would be a give and take with the candidates to see where they are.” (link)

Add UTSA to the list of schools forgoing a spring game this year. Roadrunners AD Lisa Campos: “It wasn’t an easy decision. [Football HC] Jeff [Traylor] and I had some different conversations about it, and at the end of the day, given the changing landscape, how other programs are looking at this, we just had real discussions and came to the conclusion that we would join others and not have the spring game.” (link)

Athletes who represent Team USA at the Olympic or Paralympic Games will be eligible to receive at least $200K in post-retirement benefits as part of a new support plan, according to USA Today’s Tom Schad. The Stevens Financial Security Award, made possible thanks to a $100M donation from Stone Ridge Holdings Group Founder Ross Stevens, consists of two six-figure payments and Schad explains: “Eligible athletes will be able to access $100K a four-year period following the end of their Olympic or Paralympic careers − specifically, 20 years after their qualifying Games or when they turn 45 years old, whichever is later. Their families or beneficiaries will also receive $100K upon their death.” Additionally, Schad notes the benefits will “multiply with each additional iteration of the Games in which the athlete competes − meaning a two-time Olympic athlete would receive $400K, and a three-time Paralympian would be eligible to receive $600K.” (link)
