The Pac-12 should prioritize adding Texas State rather than UNLV in conference expansion, according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who argues the league “needs chips for the future. UNLV makes sense because of geography — because it’s right there — but the Rebels are not the best bet for longer-haul growth. UNLV is the move for 2025. Texas State is the play for 2030. … Strategic decisions in the spring of 2025 must be made with the fall of 2030 in mind, with building the strongest, most valuable football product possible. From that standpoint, Texas State is the easy call as the eighth full-time member. Adding the Las Vegas metropolitan area could provide a modest increase in value over time. (By value, we mean on the broadest scale possible, not just media dollars.) It’s already well within the rebuilt Pac-12’s footprint, which stretches from San Diego to Pullman to Fort Collins. Just because UNLV is the best remaining option in the West doesn’t mean the Rebels are the best option for the Pac-12.” Compared to potential AAC targets, Wilner contends it would “cost far less to lure the Bobcats, who compete in the Sun Belt and aspire to a higher tier. In fact, the Pac-12 could offer membership at a reduced revenue share, thus creating more cash for the seven football schools (and Gonzaga) that are committed for 2026.” Ultimately, Wilner posits: “If the essence of your strategy is acquiring chips for 2030 — and if that’s not the case with the Pac-12, something is very wrong — then having a campus in Texas beats having a campus in Nevada. And it’s not close.” (link)

Now more than a half-century old, Utah’s Huntsman Center is due for some updates, and Utes AD Mark Harlan notes: “Our focus continues to be centered on exploring everything we can do to make our games in the Huntsman Center the most attractive experience they can be for our programs and our fans. It is also a building that was constructed before certain standards that are expected now, and it’s challenging with regard to elevators and some amenities. So it’s also our responsibility to continue to look at what the future possibilities might be, within the context of the overall campus planning for facilities and growth.” As for what route the Utes could take, the Salt Lake Tribune’s Jason Batacao talks with administrators from several schools who have recently either updated their existing venues or built new ones. Gary Sparks, the lead architect for Oklahoma State’s Gallagher-Iba Arena, says if he were renovating the Huntsman Center, he’d “probably start at the concourse level and renovate everything above it. Then you’d have to demolish those seats. Then I’d turn all that into really luxurious suites. I think that’s what you would have to do.” Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard says that when it comes to reducing capacity that “scarcity is a great motivator, and we prey on that in our industry because of the donation levels that you require people to give to get the best seats. That also helps in those lean years, because they know [it’s not worth] giving those seats up.” For now, Utes Deputy AD/CRO Patrick Nowlin says the focus is on controlling what can be controlled: “Whether it be through how [fans] enter the building to how they consume the game to how they are entertained. We are going to challenge ourselves to continue to find new ways to innovate, but we also want to understand what it is that our fans find value in because that right there is what we want to invest in.” (link)

Massachusetts and The Minutemen Club unveil the Script U Scholarship Society through which fans can directly support student-athlete scholarships and help offset the total annual scholarship cost to the department. Minutemen AD Ryan Bamford: "College athletics has evolved at an unprecedented rate and the Script U Scholarship Society is our way of fully embracing this moment. Our dedication to offering UMass student-athletes a top-tier academic and athletic experience remains unchanged, and we will continue to grow our support to meet the opportunities and compete for championships in this era." Clemson Deputy AD Kevin White joins Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss the Tigers’ experience in the 2024 College Football Playoff. White shares insight into the year-long preparation for the expanded playoff, including the possibility of hosting an on-campus first round game: "We started preparing about a year ago. The meetings were with our football ops teams, event ops, development, ticketing, facilities, marketing, amongst other groups." White also discussed the impact of the expanded playoff from the fan perspective, including the financial challenges of potentially attending four postseason games on the road, as well as from a student-athlete welfare perspective, including the adjustments Coach Dabo Swinney made as early as fall camp to ensure the team had enough prep time and rest to tackle a longer postseason experience. “Whatever the maximum days that we could practice in fall camp, he changed that up in order to make sure that those guys were well-rested as much as they possibly could. And he obviously made adjustments throughout the season based off of the pulse of the team and what he felt like the team needed.” (link)

FootballScoop’s John Brice shares an inside look at USC’s approach to building a football roster in the revenue-sharing era, and HC Lincoln Riley says of new GM Chad Bowden: “I’d seen obviously the job, up front, the job they had done building the roster [at Notre Dame, Bowden’s previous stop]. We had a couple of mutual friends in the business that initially connected us. Right away, I figured out how passionate and how much he believed in this place. Not just what it is today but what it’s getting ready to be. When we started talking philosophies and all of that, it was like, it felt like we had been working together for years. We saw things the same way, the future of college football the same way and strategies. It was pretty easy, honestly.” Brice points out that Bowden is also playing an active role in fundraising, and Bowden explains: “I’ve said the same thing to all these guys: If you don’t believe in USC football now, that’s ok. But I’ve told every donor, including maybe ones with some distaste from the last 20 years, send me the address and I’ll go visit them. I’m still coming for our fans to believe in this program and where it’s going. I want everybody to believe in this program.” Bowden’s arrival is already paying dividends, as Brice points out the Trojans have already secured commitments from highly touted recruit Simota Katoanga, previously a heavy Notre Dame lean, as well as top-200 quarterback Jonas Williams as part of the sport’s early No. 1 class in the 2026 rankings. Riley: “He gets stuff done. Some people sit around the office all day and talk about this or that, but there’s not that many results. He’s about process, about getting things done and putting people in positions where they can go to work and do their thing. … It’s been everything I could hope for in the beginning.” More. (link)

Juco-to-North Carolina-to-Tampa (DII)-to-Tennessee Baseball student-athlete Alberto Osuna continues his push to gain an extra year of eligibility, publishes a letter to the NCAA that reads in part: “When I called several times at the beginning of January and asked about my Division I eligibility I told you my entire playing history- 2 years at Walters State with one cancelled due to COVID, 3 at UNC and that I was currently at Tampa, on the team but no games against outside competition. You told me to file a waiver. Of course, you knew that no student-athlete can file a waiver individually. A D1 institution must file the waiver. You knew that for me to file a waiver I had to enter the transfer portal, commit to a D1 school and leave Tampa. And after I did all of that, as you instructed me to do, you have opposed my request for a waiver. If you were going to oppose my waiver all along, why did you tell me to file one? Why did you allow me to enter the transfer portal? Why did you let all of the student athletes in their last season of competition at a Division Il institution enter the portal? Why would you not provide clarity when I asked for it? Why has the NCAA not yet released the Q&A or other guidance for the Blanket Waiver? Why do you think the University of Tennessee told me about the Q&A when they recruited me? Why when I submitted my waiver did you not timely review it? By telling me to file a waiver and then taking no action on it you left me with no choice but to go to court, pay thousands and thousands of dollars that I cannot afford to fight to play this year or forfeit my remaining eligibility because you refused to help me.” More. Boise State Asst. Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly addresses reporting by Action Network’s Brett McMurphy that the league was set to vote on extending invitations to Cal Baptist and Utah Valley last month: “Like any any good athletic director when a coach departs or when you're letting a head coach go, you've always got three to five coaches in your pocket that you want to look at to fill those shoes, and it's the same as a conference commissioner with member institutions. If an institution were to depart, do you have institutions that you may have interest in pursuing? The board of directors did meet on Friday (February 28), we continue to discuss the future of the membership. Can't give you any details yet but hope to make an announcement soon.” Butterly also says the league could go beyond 11 teams. “We continue to look at the western landscape – we’re not going to look like the ACC or the Big Ten and go all the way out east to play Big West conference games.” (link)

Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette McGlade says men’s basketball teams should budget $1-3M in revenue-sharing to remain competitive. “I think from everything that’s been benchmarked across the country, we’re feeling like that probably is the range that it’s going to be important. And I think each institution’s going to have to really take a good, hard look at their own program and try to figure out what they can really manage financially to be able to continue to be nationally relevant in the sport of men’s basketball, as a basketball-centric league. … The one thing all the (A-10) presidents did, and the ADs did, back in November was kind of put their hands in the center and say, ‘We want to maintain and continue to improve where we are.’ So hopefully, the commitment’s there and I am fully confident that it is there for the A-10.” Everyone in the league, McGlade adds, “basically made the commitment that we’re going forward with [revenue-sharing] and that we want to maintain basically to be relevant and to try to continue to be a multi-bid conference.” (link)

The Horizon League announces that all 11 member institutions will opt into the House settlement. Commissioner Julie Roe Lach: “The Division I model is modernizing and our members intend to be a player in this next chapter. We talk a lot about major experiences with leadership and by taking this step, our presidents, chancellors and athletics directors are putting critical pieces in place to continue to provide those experiences during this dynamic time in our industry.” (link)

Penn State has received a $50M naming gift from West Shore Home and will rename Beaver Stadium as West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium. According to The Athletic’s Audrey Snyder, the gift will be delivered over 15 years and brings the total funds raised for the Beaver Stadium renovation to $130.675M 10 months. The goal was to raise $134M. Trustees voted 22-8 in favor of the measure, with board member Anthony Lubrano explaining his no vote: “This is a very sad and sobering day for Penn State. Today, for many of us, the music dies. Today, the Penn State we know and love is no more because we’re about to commit the ultimate betrayal – fitting, given that Catholics around the world are celebrating the Lenten season. The only question we should ask is who will play Judas for a few silver pieces?” Lubrano argues naming the stadium after longtime Football HC Joe Paterno would raise hundreds of millions of dollars. Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry, his wife, Ayesha, and longtime Davidson supporters Don, Matt and Erica Berman, are creating an eight-figure fund to support the college’s men’s and women’s basketball teams. In addition to the Curry-Berman Fund, Curry and Matt Berman will serve in advisory roles as Asst. GMs. The Wildcats have also promoted Asst. Director for Athletic Development Austin Buntz to Asst. AD for Basketball Development/GM. Curry: “The goal for this is to invest in the next student athlete that’s coming into Davidson today. They don’t have to take cuts on what the market says they deserve to be part of the brand of what it means to be a Davidson scholar-athlete with integrity in your academic experience. The commitment to a four-year graduation process provides countless opportunities professionally in sports or as a game changer in life. And that leads into my role as an assistant GM with Matt Berman – our ability to be a resource and a sounding board for the program, but also support each student athlete, to develop personal relationships with each of them to help guide them every step of the way through their Davidson experience.” (link)

Arizona State received a $51.7M subsidy from the school to break even as an athletic department during FY24. ASU President Michael Crow explains that “we’ve changed the model, making Sun Devil Athletics part of the core enterprise of ASU, a part of the university in the same way as is every other college and unit. It no longer operates as an auxiliary unit solely responsible for the financial issues associated with running 26 varied intercollegiate sports. This change allows the athletic department to focus on its core function – the success of student athletes academically and athletically, and on competition.” In all, ASU reported $144M in total revenue and $144M in total expenses during FY24, with institutional support and student fees accounting for more than one-third (36%) of the revenue. The $51.7M subsidy included $40M in institutional and government support, which is more than twice the amount ASU provided its athletics department over the previous two years combined ($7.6M in 2022, $9.3M in 2023). Of that $40M, $37.6M came via in direct institutional and government support and $2.4M in indirect institutional support. (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy examines to what extent the NCAA can further monetize its basketball tournaments, and NCAA VP of Championship Business Affairs Chris Termini remarks: “I’ll say that broadly the NCAA has been entrenched in a lot of principles or ideals that the membership has long abandoned. … For example, the CFP has had a beer sponsor for a long time. There are opportunities that every day we’re talking about…that we have either not pursued or that we forfeited for a variety of reasons. Having said that, I do think there are some third rails and bright lines that we’re not going to cross into.” Meanwhile, Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman continues to advocate for merging the men’s and women’s Final Fours into one event and explains: “I think about the Grand Slams in tennis. You can synchronize the men and women in a way where the women aren’t overshadowed, where one plus one equals five. Right now, if you were to go and say, ‘Hey, we’re gonna change Wimbledon. We’re gonna put them on at the same time, but we’re gonna put the women up in Manchester and we’re gonna keep the men in Wimbledon Village,’ people would say ‘You’re crazy.’ It can be done. Tennis has proven that, and I just wish that we could find a way in college basketball to try that.” Former Learfield CRO John Brody agrees and adds that doing so would derive more value than expanding the fields. “Bringing the men’s and women’s tournaments together in a way that is creative and differentiated and innovative is bold. That’s the sort of thinking that is needed to create transformation in March Madness. I don’t think it’s adding two, four, six, eight more schools and opening up a [sponsorship] category or two.” More. (link)

ESPN SVP of Production Meg Aronowitz talks with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy about growing March Madness on the women’s side and acknowledges that while last year is likely not duplicable, the Caitlin Clark effect has “really been the catalyst for us to approach the women’s tournament in a bigger and better way, and it’s afforded us the resources to really even build on what we did last year. … It is the crown jewel of our NCAA championship portfolio. We are approaching this year with even more fervor and vigor and putting more resources behind it. Coming into this week, I think we started out the season and our ratings were down 40% year over year in women’s college basketball. And coming into this week, we’re in the black and we’re up 1%. To me, what that tells me is people love college basketball.” Aronowitz goes on to explain that “for us, the opportunities are obviously in revenue generation, right? I think we’re all in the for-profit business. And it’s great to say that we’re sold out of commercial inventory for the [Women’s] Final Four and that we’re very close to that in the rest of the women’s tournament. Our ad sales load, I think there’s only one item at this point that’s left to be sold in the women’s tournament, which is a great story to tell. What that allows us to do is be able to support the resources in the storytelling more, but more importantly, to be honest with you, it’s the whole company galvanizing around this story of March. Whereas, all due respect, five, six years ago, it would be maybe ‘SportsCenter’ would talk about it a little bit. And maybe [ESPN.com] would give us support. But [this year] we’re going to have live scoring and data all over all of our app and [ESPN.com] presence.” More. (link)
