Count Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark among those in support of expanding March Madness. Yormark: “I’m in favor of expansion to 76. I think that’s the right number. I think the economics, candidly, have to work. CBS and TNT have a marquee asset with the tournament. I know they know that, but in order for us to expand, they have to come to the table and provide the right economics.” CBS Sports President/CEO David Berson signals a more cautionary approach to expanding the marquee event: “No one wants to do anything that’s going to negatively impact the tournament, and that’s where the focus is.” TNT Sports Chairman/CEO Luis Silberwasser adds: “If it’s something that makes sense for the fans and the tournament we’ll be supportive.” (link); During an on-air discussion on the much-talked about new court at this year’s Phillips 66 Big 12 Basketball Championships, Yormark noted: “The other night, my son sent me a tweet that was on Barstool and it said ‘the Big 12 women are playing on a Louis Vuitton bag.’ Candidly, that’s all I needed to read. That was exactly what we were looking for. I was teasing everyone that this was our Gucci pattern, but I’m excited about it. In fact, there are a lot of brand extensions off of this court. Think about branded luggage with the XII. Think about hoodies and things of that nature. This is just the beginning. We’re all about the XII and think we really highlighted it this weekend.” (link); The Big 12 also announced on Tuesday that it will move from 20 to 18 conference games next season, with VP of Men’s Basketball Brian Thornton commenting: “One of the biggest impetuses for that is just the balance of conference versus non-conference games. It’s extremely important, because of the competitive nature of our conference, for there to be some ability to have a bye built into our schedule. With the way that the schedule lays out, playing 20 games post-Christmas makes that impossible to do, so we’re going to try 18 games and we’re going to see how that goes.” (link)

Conference USA Commissioner Judy MacLeod indicates all schools in the league have chosen to opt in to the House settlement, “...so now we’re just trying to figure out the plan. There will be more benefits for student-athletes. Some people might do it in different ways, but we’re going to allow a little bit of creativity on their end to figure out what’s best for them.” AL.com’s Thomas Ashworth also reports the C-USA Men’s & Women’s Basketball Tournaments will return to Huntsville, Ala., for the 2025-26 season. Nuggets from Virginia AD Carla Williams’ letter to Cavs supporters: “Revenue sharing for football and basketball is projected at $20.5M in 2025-26. These are the same revenues that are used to fund the Olympic sports. The University has and will continue to invest in sustaining these programs and ensuring full participation in revenue sharing, however, the current model is not sustainable, and new ways must be established to bridge the financial gap. Your contributions play a critical role in navigating these financial challenges. Because of your support, we can provide our student-athletes with the resources they need to thrive—from top-tier coaching and training facilities to academic support and leadership development opportunities. While operational adjustments are necessary, our commitment to excellence remains unwavering. [...] The men’s basketball program is undergoing a pivotal transition following Coach Bennett’s retirement. Dean and Markel Families Men’s Interim Head Coach Ron Sanchez is leading the team through this period, with tremendous grace and care for the young men on our team. We are working diligently to bring the head coach search to conclusion prior to the end of the Spring Transfer Portal which is March 24 – April 22.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger & Kerryhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter had some play-by-play on today’s House Judiciary hearing on NIL & a possible NCAA antitrust exemption. Notables from Dellenger: “House Judiciary chair Jim Jordan says that SEC commissioner Greg Sankey has told him that, under an employment model, he anticipates that schools will drop to the NCAA minimum of 16 sports. Wisconsin AD Chris McIntosh replies, ‘I think that is an accurate portrayal.’ [...] House Judiciary chair Jim Jordan sorts thru the ways college athletes get compensation: (1) scholarship + benefits; (2) House rev-share; (3) market NIL; (4) booster collective NIL. Jordan: ‘It’s far from uncompensated labor. This idea of uncompensated labor is just false.’ [...] The House Judiciary subcommittee’s NIL-related hearing has ended. As so many of the others have featured, it was a debate between Republicans and Democrats mostly over the athlete employment debate and future of Olympic sports. They do not agree.” As for key notes from Winter: “It’s clear (Representative Jerrold) Nadler (D-NY) isn’t in favor of the NCAA receiving an antitrust exemption. He’s destroying the request right now, and explaining how the NCAA wants to use it to roll back progress for athletes. Another example of how an antitrust exemption is extremely unlikely. [...] I think this is the first hearing where it’s become more clear an antitrust exemption for the NCAA would, in addition to being used for compensation restrictions, be used to reimpose transfer restrictions. [...] (Representative Jamie) Raskin (D-MD) is also attacking the NCAA and the conferences. Says they want to ‘keep the athletes voiceless forever.’ Asks his colleagues not to give a repeat antitrust offender a bailout.“ (link, link)

Sixteen coaches associations, headed by NFCA CEO Carol Bruggeman, have penned a letter to the DI Board of Governors calling for immediate change regarding “inexplicably more stringent” eligibility standards for junior college student-athletes. Specific “different standards” include scholarships for the entire five years, similar to four-year transfers; a 2.5 GPA for JUCO transfers when four-year transfers need a 2.0; limits on scrimmages counting against seasons of competition; and more. The letter goes on to read: “Student-athletes should not be punished or treated adversely because they have enrolled in a two-year institution before transferring to an NCAA institution.” NJCAA President/CEO Christopher Parker tells CBS’ Dennis Dodd he has tried to connect with NCAA President Charlie Baker about enacting these changes “but we haven't received any indication of Charlie's willingness to do so collaboratively.” (link)

A group of 18 Power 4 Track & Field HC’s have joined together to draft an open letter entitled “Call to Action for Track & Field,” per Venable LLP Partner/Sports Law & NIL Attorney Philip Sheng, seeking to protect their sport’s future against consequences of the House settlement, including roster limits, budget cuts, growing program costs and program eliminations. The document is being circulated throughout the sport’s community calling for immediate action to “protect and preserve the sport,” by mobilizing, speaking out, engaging with NCAA officials, advocating for fair funding and working to create innovative solutions for access, including reinventing the sport to become more consumable and TV friendly. From the letter: “If we fail to act, the consequences will be devastating. Many young athletes, especially from underserved communities, could lose access to educational opportunities. This will harm the U.S. pipeline of athletes, diminishing our edge at the Olympic Games and World Championships. […] The future of track and field, and the future of our athletes, depend on our collective action.” (link)

The Utah legislature has passed a bill that would permit direct payments to student-athletes and clearly states that student-athletes are not employees of their institution, as part of a larger bill addressing abusive coaching practices. Pending the governor’s signature, the bill calls for all institutions to create policies to respond to abusive coaching complaints by November. Regarding compensation, the provision requiring payments to be subject to public records has been removed. The bill would also require institutions to conduct an audit of NIL spending every five years, starting in 2028, and prohibit using legislative appropriations, tuition or fees to compensate student-athletes. If signed into law, the bill would take effect May 7. (link)

As part of its postseason football review, the Big Ten will look for more balance with its Friday night inventory as the quartet of West Coast members filled 39% of those broadcast slots, per The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner. Big Ten COO Kerry Kenny: “This year brought many new and complex elements into the Big Ten’s TV process. Three full broadcast windows in fixed positions, West Coast travel that needed to be balanced, and an expanded CFP race that deepened the pool of games with a postseason impact late in the season. We worked with our media partners to evaluate the impact of the Friday night game time window when games would otherwise be televised during a busy Saturday slate of games, and we’ve appreciated the additional visibility and promotion that this creates for our student-athletes and institutions.” Wilner adds: “There’s no evidence to indicate Big Ten and Fox will eliminate the Friday night package in future seasons. If anything, it’s the ideal promotional vehicle for Fox’s showcase ‘Big Noon’ broadcast 15 hours later. […] Multiple sources at the West Coast schools acknowledged the reality of the Friday night assignments: It’s part of their complicated but lucrative existence in the Big Ten. But there is a certain level of curiosity about the distribution of Friday night assignments in future seasons and whether the Wolverines, Buckeyes and Nittany Lions will ever share in the responsibility.” (link)

The Nevada Board of Regents held a hearing last Friday to dive into the $27M budget shortfall in UNLV’s FY24 budget, which included a $5.3M influx from the university’s operating distribution pool from the Nevada System of Higher Education. With a projected annual deficit of around $27M through FY29, Regent Heather Brown: “Taking from unrestricted operating distribution in order to not increase the deficit is not a plan to not have a deficit, it’s a plan to rob Peter to pay Paul. Because UNLV is not going to have unlimited amounts of money in this other bucket … and it doesn’t look like the spending itself is going down. We’re just moving money around with the hopes that nobody … is going to ask this question and you’ve bought yourself another year until you have to present to the board again, and that’s just not fair.” Brown also questioned AD Erick Harper about how the Rebels were planning to use the distribution from fees paid by members leaving the Mountain West, to which Harper noted some dollars would go towards the shortfall, at which point the budget would be revised. The board requested for UNLV’s athletic budget report to be heard again before approving. (link)

+ Playfly acquires Paragon Marketing Group. CEO Craig Sloan on the impact of the latest move: “The complexity across sports and media means it’s a must for brands to get advisory capabilities to navigate this landscape. With this acquisition, we have a collection of assets that will allow us a comprehensive view across sports, media and fan engagement. … This also puts us into events heavily, something we’ve been looking at for a while. […] Over the next couple of years, I’d find it hard to believe that we’ll still be sitting on the sidelines when it comes to talent. We’ve got IP against high school, college, pro sports and media. Talent is an area we’ve been more than curious about. … And as experiential becomes increasingly important, you’ll also probably see us adding more capabilities there through acquisition.” (link)

The Pac-12 should prioritize adding Texas State rather than UNLV in conference expansion, according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who argues the league “needs chips for the future. UNLV makes sense because of geography — because it’s right there — but the Rebels are not the best bet for longer-haul growth. UNLV is the move for 2025. Texas State is the play for 2030. … Strategic decisions in the spring of 2025 must be made with the fall of 2030 in mind, with building the strongest, most valuable football product possible. From that standpoint, Texas State is the easy call as the eighth full-time member. Adding the Las Vegas metropolitan area could provide a modest increase in value over time. (By value, we mean on the broadest scale possible, not just media dollars.) It’s already well within the rebuilt Pac-12’s footprint, which stretches from San Diego to Pullman to Fort Collins. Just because UNLV is the best remaining option in the West doesn’t mean the Rebels are the best option for the Pac-12.” Compared to potential AAC targets, Wilner contends it would “cost far less to lure the Bobcats, who compete in the Sun Belt and aspire to a higher tier. In fact, the Pac-12 could offer membership at a reduced revenue share, thus creating more cash for the seven football schools (and Gonzaga) that are committed for 2026.” Ultimately, Wilner posits: “If the essence of your strategy is acquiring chips for 2030 — and if that’s not the case with the Pac-12, something is very wrong — then having a campus in Texas beats having a campus in Nevada. And it’s not close.” (link)

Now more than a half-century old, Utah’s Huntsman Center is due for some updates, and Utes AD Mark Harlan notes: “Our focus continues to be centered on exploring everything we can do to make our games in the Huntsman Center the most attractive experience they can be for our programs and our fans. It is also a building that was constructed before certain standards that are expected now, and it’s challenging with regard to elevators and some amenities. So it’s also our responsibility to continue to look at what the future possibilities might be, within the context of the overall campus planning for facilities and growth.” As for what route the Utes could take, the Salt Lake Tribune’s Jason Batacao talks with administrators from several schools who have recently either updated their existing venues or built new ones. Gary Sparks, the lead architect for Oklahoma State’s Gallagher-Iba Arena, says if he were renovating the Huntsman Center, he’d “probably start at the concourse level and renovate everything above it. Then you’d have to demolish those seats. Then I’d turn all that into really luxurious suites. I think that’s what you would have to do.” Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard says that when it comes to reducing capacity that “scarcity is a great motivator, and we prey on that in our industry because of the donation levels that you require people to give to get the best seats. That also helps in those lean years, because they know [it’s not worth] giving those seats up.” For now, Utes Deputy AD/CRO Patrick Nowlin says the focus is on controlling what can be controlled: “Whether it be through how [fans] enter the building to how they consume the game to how they are entertained. We are going to challenge ourselves to continue to find new ways to innovate, but we also want to understand what it is that our fans find value in because that right there is what we want to invest in.” (link)

Clemson Deputy AD Kevin White joins Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss the Tigers’ experience in the 2024 College Football Playoff. White shares insight into the year-long preparation for the expanded playoff, including the possibility of hosting an on-campus first round game: "We started preparing about a year ago. The meetings were with our football ops teams, event ops, development, ticketing, facilities, marketing, amongst other groups." White also discussed the impact of the expanded playoff from the fan perspective, including the financial challenges of potentially attending four postseason games on the road, as well as from a student-athlete welfare perspective, including the adjustments Coach Dabo Swinney made as early as fall camp to ensure the team had enough prep time and rest to tackle a longer postseason experience. “Whatever the maximum days that we could practice in fall camp, he changed that up in order to make sure that those guys were well-rested as much as they possibly could. And he obviously made adjustments throughout the season based off of the pulse of the team and what he felt like the team needed.” (link)

FootballScoop’s John Brice shares an inside look at USC’s approach to building a football roster in the revenue-sharing era, and HC Lincoln Riley says of new GM Chad Bowden: “I’d seen obviously the job, up front, the job they had done building the roster [at Notre Dame, Bowden’s previous stop]. We had a couple of mutual friends in the business that initially connected us. Right away, I figured out how passionate and how much he believed in this place. Not just what it is today but what it’s getting ready to be. When we started talking philosophies and all of that, it was like, it felt like we had been working together for years. We saw things the same way, the future of college football the same way and strategies. It was pretty easy, honestly.” Brice points out that Bowden is also playing an active role in fundraising, and Bowden explains: “I’ve said the same thing to all these guys: If you don’t believe in USC football now, that’s ok. But I’ve told every donor, including maybe ones with some distaste from the last 20 years, send me the address and I’ll go visit them. I’m still coming for our fans to believe in this program and where it’s going. I want everybody to believe in this program.” Bowden’s arrival is already paying dividends, as Brice points out the Trojans have already secured commitments from highly touted recruit Simota Katoanga, previously a heavy Notre Dame lean, as well as top-200 quarterback Jonas Williams as part of the sport’s early No. 1 class in the 2026 rankings. Riley: “He gets stuff done. Some people sit around the office all day and talk about this or that, but there’s not that many results. He’s about process, about getting things done and putting people in positions where they can go to work and do their thing. … It’s been everything I could hope for in the beginning.” More. (link)

Juco-to-North Carolina-to-Tampa (DII)-to-Tennessee Baseball student-athlete Alberto Osuna continues his push to gain an extra year of eligibility, publishes a letter to the NCAA that reads in part: “When I called several times at the beginning of January and asked about my Division I eligibility I told you my entire playing history- 2 years at Walters State with one cancelled due to COVID, 3 at UNC and that I was currently at Tampa, on the team but no games against outside competition. You told me to file a waiver. Of course, you knew that no student-athlete can file a waiver individually. A D1 institution must file the waiver. You knew that for me to file a waiver I had to enter the transfer portal, commit to a D1 school and leave Tampa. And after I did all of that, as you instructed me to do, you have opposed my request for a waiver. If you were going to oppose my waiver all along, why did you tell me to file one? Why did you allow me to enter the transfer portal? Why did you let all of the student athletes in their last season of competition at a Division Il institution enter the portal? Why would you not provide clarity when I asked for it? Why has the NCAA not yet released the Q&A or other guidance for the Blanket Waiver? Why do you think the University of Tennessee told me about the Q&A when they recruited me? Why when I submitted my waiver did you not timely review it? By telling me to file a waiver and then taking no action on it you left me with no choice but to go to court, pay thousands and thousands of dollars that I cannot afford to fight to play this year or forfeit my remaining eligibility because you refused to help me.” More.
