ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips discussed the settlement with Florida State and Clemson during the women’s hoops tournament over the weekend and indicated that “reconciliation is something we can all learn personally and professionally. It was the right thing, but you talk about expansion, success initiatives, two major new sponsors with Geico and T. Rowe Price, you come up with the ability to have some resolution to some legal battles – viewership now will be a part of how we distribute dollars – the league is better with Florida State and Clemson and Clemson and Florida State are better being in the league. So, it took a lot of effort, a lot of work, but I'm really pleased where it's all ended. At the end of the day, no one can tell me that this league isn't stronger for all the things that I mentioned that we've gone through over the last not only two or three weeks, but over the last probably 18 months.” (link)

MAC Commissioner/DI Council Vice Chair Jon Steinbrecher joined AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz at the 2025 NCAA Convention to offer insight into the House settlement, eligibility concerns, conference realignment, sportsmanship and more. Steinbrecher calls for an increase in “clarity” as well as assistance from Congress to address key governance and structural issues facing the industry today and emphasizes the need to return to a focus on “educational outcomes” instead of short-term economic gains for athletes and athletic departments. Regarding the future of MAC membership, Steinbrecher shares that his team has been engaged in a “strategic thinking process” to lay out possible directions for the league given a variety of scenarios in the post-House era. On the latter topic, Steinbrecher remarks: “I can’t see six months down the road, forget five years. So we're trying to tee up what are the big issues and try to at least put some pegs in the board, at least make sure we're touching on these things and perhaps setting a direction, but not laying out all the tactical and strategic things.” As for the consequences of the House Settlement, Steinbrecher explains that “I don't know that it'll change our sports sponsorship. My sense would be – and I think this is nationally, and I'm reading it more and more – there certainly will be programs that you'll have more of a national outlook, and there may be programs where you have more of a regional conference outlook. And I'm not foreshadowing anything going on in our conference; I don't know on that, but that seems to make a lot of sense.” Full Q&A. (link)

Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez covers several topics with The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman and Rob Dauster, including March Madness expansion. Nevarez believes basketball is “good the way it is. I'm open to the conversation about expansion…it ain’t broke, let's not break it. If we can be additive, let's be additive, but there's a lot in basketball. You have to honor the conference championships, you have a long season – one can argue that the best teams are in the field. Is more access better? Perhaps, but not to the point of harming a really good championship.” Nevarez goes on to explain that she’s “against multiple AQs in any format. If there's an expansion and we all have a shot at those spots, let's go, let's have it done on the floor, not in the meeting room beforehand with automatic AQs. So, that's kind of where I line up because are we going to get those spots? Maybe sometimes and when we do it's amazing, and it's usually with a very, very deserving team that really performs. … Again, I'm open to the conversation as long as we don't completely reformat what is already a good thing.” On conference expansion, Nevarez maintains the league is in a good position, explaining that “we have our membership, we’re moving forward. We’re taking a pause on expansion, so we’re no longer shopping right now. … What I really appreciate about our new members is the excitement they're bringing. I mean, they are already using the year or so before they join us to do all those things to make sure they're not coming in at the bottom of the league, and that was a very important piece of our negotiation conversation. They all are in it to compete.” Full podcast. (link)

Michigan State AD Alan Haller remarked ahead of this weekend’s men’s basketball matchup with Michigan that “I’m focused on what we're doing. But how we win and lose against the school in Ann Arbor is important, and I want to beat them. … We're still competing against Penn State, Ohio State, Ann Arbor with a budget of millions and millions of dollars less, and that's important. It's important to our community. There are no excuses. And what I want to do is sustain excellence and I want our teams to be able to compete year in and year out. I think we're building that foundation to be able to do that. That's what makes me proud — that our student-athletes in a lot of our sports have the opportunity to win. It wasn't always that way.” Haller also indicated that at least 75% of the Spartans’ revenue-sharing pool will go to football, with men’s basketball receiving the next-highest amount. From there, he explains that “we have a really good challenge for us in that the expectation is that hockey still is supported, women's basketball is supported, volleyball is supported. And obviously we have to heavily support men's basketball and football. So we have a good problem, but there are other schools that won't focus on other teams outside of football and men’s basketball, and that's not what we're going to do.” (link)

North Texas has raised over $6M of its ~$10M goal to expand its athletic center, according to Mean Green AD Jared Mosley, who adds: “We have a number of six- and seven-figure asks in the last two weeks that I feel really good about. Assuming we can land a few of those, I feel like come May 31 we should be at a place where we can hopefully go to the campus board and seek permission to move forward in breaking ground on phase one.” The school’s plan is to expand the 45,000-square-foot facility in two phases, with the first phase focusing on the strength and conditioning area. Mosley also says UNT plans to bring NIL operations in-house in the coming months, and “our goal is to try to push as quickly as we can to make sure we’re in the top third of the American.” Looking to the future, Mosley cites growing the donor base as a key challenge: “I’ve been able to look at the metrics that assess value for institutions in the realignment process. It does not surprise me that we stack up in the top three or four in the American in nearly every category, including win-loss. The areas that we fall drastically short are donor engagement, alumni engagement and TV viewership. … If down the road another door opens, we’re going to have those things in a drastically different place if we want to be ready for that opportunity.” (link); Full press conference. + North Carolina State has parted ways with Men’s Basketball HC Kevin Keatts after eight seasons. USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz reports the Wolfpack will owe Keatts a $7.8M buyout, noting his deal was automatically extended by two years, through April 15, 2030, after winning last year’s ACC Tournament. The buyout is subject to his duty to mitigate. According to The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman, NC State’s roster had a payroll of around $2M. (link, link)

+ Oregon State AD Scott Barnes confirms to JohnCanzano.com’s namesake that Men’s Basketball HC Wayne Tinkle will return next season, and Canzano writes: “When I heard that from Barnes, my mind drifted to the $5.9M OSU owes Tinkle over the next two seasons. Also, there’s looming revenue-sharing with athletes that will require unprecedented resources. Who wants to buy out a coach these days?” (link)

Connecticut Men’s Basketball HC Dan Hurley revealed on 60 Minutes that “50% of my roster or more is at least considering going in the portal, if not already knows what school that they’re going to. Yeah, and in a couple of those cases, they’ve already talked to the coaching staff at the future school and have an idea of what their NIL is going to be there. … The level of volatility in college sports, this has now become a year-to-year proposition. The game has changed completely.” Hurley also remarked that there is a “path” to winning a third consecutive national championship, adding that he will feel a sense of failure if the Huskies don’t three-peat. “Once you’ve done it, anytime that you don’t do it, deep down inside you’re not gonna look at those years the same way. There’s going to be a feeling of failure that comes with that. Fail, fail, I mean it’s fail. I can live with it. It won’t be this offseason of pain and suffering. … I’ll be able to live with it but it will still be a failure.” (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer reports from the NCAA Elite Football Student-Athlete Symposium that ran concurrently with the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. The three-day event included 20 high-profile current college football players who are either on the verge of the NFL but ineligible for the draft or who opted to return to school for another season. Texas linebacker Anthony Hill Jr., a rising junior, tells Fischer: “I learned a lot of new stuff from this, the latest one just being able to know that you’ve got a [players association] when you go to the next level, learning about money and savings, and kind of being myself and learning how to express yourself with [the media].” NCAA Director of Football Enforcement Chris Howard explains that “when I was on campus, and even when I came back to the national office, there was a lot of misinformation out there by individuals who were financial advisers or agents. … We built [the symposium] out trying to figure out programming that, one, can inform student-athletes, but also point them in the right direction to ask additional questions. As they go through this process, because it is a unique process not too many people go through, we are trying to help them with the transition from being here as a collegiate student-athlete to eventually becoming a professional athlete.” More. South Carolina Gamecock Club Chief Revenue & Data Officer Dan Stahl joins Connect's Kristen Eargle on the latest episode of The Career Hustle. Stahl talks about his career path, specific projects he’s led, staying educated as the industry changes and offers career advice for young professionals. Stahl explains that diving into data and learning where the industry was headed in 2015 has made a significant impact in where he is today. "Innovation and leaning into your skill set is really important. Something I try to tell our young employees is to be proactive. Go find things to do on your own rather than waiting for your boss to tell you to go do something. I think when you show that, when you show results, it’s only going to help you grow your career.” To stay up to speed, Stahl says he’s not shy about leaning on peers “and not being afraid to say, ‘Hey, what did you do here?’ … And then taking those learnings and looking at how we’re set up at South Carolina and seeing how we can do that here? And it won't be the same, it'll be different, but maybe we can do something similar here to make it work and work better for our fans.” Full conversation on Connect. (link)

USA Today’s Matt Hayes envisions the possible long-term impact of hiring NFL personnel executives for college GM roles and writes: “Player procurement and the salary cap is everything. That’s why NFL coaches are typically fired long before general managers. Because NFL owners (see: university presidents) don’t want to know how the sausage is made. They just want results, and when they’re looking for reasons why it’s not working, they typically seek guidance from the one clear buffer between them and the obviously self-served opinion of the head coach. They ask the GM, who then tells the owner that the talent is in place to win. I just buy the groceries, I don’t cook the meal. See where this is headed? … What university president and/or athletic director in their right mind is going to fire a coach and general manager if the losses pile up? You’re not going to run off the guy who understands the salary cap and how to structure it, and salaries and budgets and everything that goes with it. Because you don’t want to do it, and don’t want to start all over and hire another person to do it their way — unless you absolutely, positively have to. … In less than four years, college football has nearly completed this blind metamorphosis into a cheap facsimile of the NFL. Once players become employees (that’s the next step) and collectively bargain, we’ll have reached peak imitation. The vacuum is being filled, everyone. Be careful what you wish for.” (link)

Congrats to Utah for taking home the NCAA Skiing National Championship, the program's fourth in the last five years. Utes Director of Skiing Fredrik Landstedt: "This was just amazing up here, especially in front of this crowd. There's a huge amount of people out here and a band playing. It's just incredible to have this kind of finish. I'm super proud of this team, how they came together and the camaraderie they've shown—really the way to fight back during the championship." (link)

Saint Mary’s President Roger Thompson talks to JohnCanzano.com’s namesake about how the Gaels are looking into the future: “We’re supportive of the WCC and happy to be in a great conference, but we have to keep our options open. Anyone in my position would say that.” Canzano: “The school doesn’t have an invitation from the Pac-12. There’s no guarantee one will come, particularly if the Pac-12 decides to add two more all-sports schools. That would leave the conference with 10 basketball members. But if the Pac-12 adds just one school (i.e., UNLV), the Gaels become an interesting basketball addition. Saint Mary’s could stay in the WCC, schedule good non-conference games, and theoretically enjoy regular access to the NCAA Tournament. Without Gonzaga around, Bennett’s program would also be positioned as the WCC’s featured men’s basketball team for broadcast exposure. [...] The WCC athletic directors met on Saturday in Las Vegas. The AD meeting came on the heels of a recent meeting between the league’s presidents. WCC presidents voted in favor of unequal distributions of future NCAA Tournament units, per multiple sources. Saint Mary’s will keep more of what it earns in the NCAA Tournament. The same presidents, however, voted against raising the conference exit fee.” (link)

Toledo AD Bryan Blair sits down with Connect's Bryan Fischer at the 2025 NCAA Convention and talks about capitalizing off momentum, the importance of listening to student-athletes, navigating tough decisions, restructuring staff roles to adapt to the new model and more. Blair explains the Rockets are “going to look at some positions on staff that currently exist that we can repurpose – or maybe it's a blended role. My person that oversees student-athletes; scholarships, do they now oversee all student-athlete benefits? … Right now that person is handling the spreadsheets and working with the financial aid office on campus – well maybe going forward that person’s an MBA that’s heavy into data and analytics and they can really do a deep dive in that area where I’ve already got an FTE devoted to that position. Maybe I just bump it up a little bit and recruit a different type of personality. I also think our college campus, we overlook them sometimes in terms of talent. Our institution just onboarded a brand new major in data analytics. How do I utilize those students in that classroom in an effort to bolster what we're trying to do, [and] at the same time lean into the overall institutional mission – allowing them to say, ‘You know what, funding athletics isn’t so bad.” Full conversation now on Connect. As part of the celebration of Women’s History Month, Nevada Sports Net’s Shannon Kelly features Nevada AD Stephanie Rempe, one of 10 female athletic directors in the FBS. Rempe, who was a walk-on for Arizona’s volleyball team, “As a student-athlete, I just didn’t have a whole lot of role models in our profession. I read a lot of books about women and that really impacted me and then I remember watching something on the news and seeing someone be sworn into the Senate that kind of looked like me, and it registered the value of a role model and all of a sudden that registered for me significantly. I realized it’s kind of a silly thing, but when you see somebody then you believe you can do it. … I remember I was in college and our coach was talking to me and it really triggered my senior year about wanting the ball. When that triggers, it's a whole different dynamic that goes on for life. I want the ball here. If there's any issue that is about to be faced, I want the ball and I know I learned that from sports. … Discipline is a huge one that I learned in sports. There's no question. I pride myself on my discipline. Foot on the gas. As soon as you take your foot off the gas, you're going to lose.” (link)

Florida A&M AD Angela Suggs is overhauling the Rattlers’ Football & Men’s Basketball season ticket sales in an effort to generate more revenue & create a framework that is manageable to service. Suggs has simplified the pricing tiers for both sports: “What we wanted to do was dial back and be able to dig into the data to learn what the appetite of our fan base and stakeholders is ― season tickets and sections being purchased. [...] While we will be effective and efficient, cutting our way to success without looking at revenues and new revenues, I don’t believe that’s the right way to approach it. It doesn’t save us money. The idea is it’s going to make us more money that is direct because we’re cutting out expenses that are associated with a package program.” (link)

OutKick’s Trey Wallace argues that the GM role is now the most important one in college football. “So, why is this so important to the game right now? Well, it comes down to college football, and basketball, moving towards a more professional model when handling rosters, payroll (Revenue Sharing), and scouting. … teams are looking for general managers who have experience to come in and handle the duties of someone you might see in the NFL or NBA. Now that we are months away from revenue-sharing, with players signing contracts with the schools for their NIL rights, which is just another way to say ‘pay-for-play,' there has to be someone controlling this all. Sure, schools could've put together contracts for these athletes, but they don't have the experience of dealing with a roster payroll. Now that players will be signing contracts with the schools themselves, there has to be someone who can manage how much each athlete will get, and negotiate those contracts.” One Power 4 HC told OutKick: “I just don't have the time anymore to spend hours looking over transfer portal tape, with agents blowing up my phone. I need someone who can find the right guys, know how much money we're gonna spend in the future and be my guide on who can help us win titles. Everything has changed over the years, and it's only going to get crazier in the future. I don't want players coming into my office complaining that they aren't getting paid enough when this rev-sharing begins. There is no reason why I need to be part of contract negotiations, which is wild to actually say out loud, since this has been so taboo in the past. Everything is changing, and while I think we're ready, I still have plenty of questions.” North Carolina Football HC Bill Belichick on hiring GM Michael Lombardi: “Michael knows how to build a champion and brings a great deal of quality experience to the UNC program. I am excited to be reunited with Michael, and we will rely on his expertise in evaluating and acquiring talent for the Tar Heel program.” More. (link)

Former Bowling Green Football HC Scot Loeffler tells the Toledo Blade’s David Briggs that leaving Bowling Green was “the toughest decision I’ve ever had to make. But it made sense. We've talked about the chaos in college football right now. Being the head coach at Bowling Green, there's a lot to it. It's not just the X's and O's. It's roster management, NIL, fund-raising, the portal, high school recruiting, it's nonstop. The one thing about my wife and I is we were all in, 100% all in. It was a 365-day, 24-7 job, and to do it five more years at that pace and being 50 years old, I don't know if I could have done it, to be honest. I really don't know if I would have made it.” Loeffler also tells Briggs that the NCAA “needs to put guard rails up, and, if they don’t, they’re going to screw up a really, really good thing. Right now, there are none. It's free agency year round. I'm a big believer that college football is still built on graduating, and, when you're transferring as many times as you can and you're losing credit hours, I just don't know how good it is for the players. … I believe in NIL. I believe in the portal. They just need guard rails.” (link)

Florida starting quarterback DJ Lagway is making a six-figure donation to Florida Victorious women’s sports teams (basketball, softball, volleyball and gymnastics). In a video statement, Lagway detailed how the women at UF have inspired him: “Hard work is the lifeblood of everything we do. Every home run. Every spike. Every bucket. So many hours of unseen hard work. But I see it. I see the 25 SEC championships. I see it in the perfect tens. I can hear the hours of dedication behind every pitch. I am truly inspired by these women. Your passion pushes me to go harder every single day. Because of this, I wanna show my appreciation for everything that they do and encourage others to do the same. That's why I have decided to personally make a contribution to our Florida Victorious women athletes, Go Gators!" (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann details Adidas’ latest trademark infringement lawsuit against a company whose products use designs that “look too much like its famous three-stripe mark, Adidas insists. In a complaint filed in a California federal district court, Adidas accuses Fashion Nova of infringement, unfair competition, breach of contract and other claims. Fashion Nova is a fast fashion company that Adidas says has a ‘penchant for overlooking the intellectual property of others.’ … Adidas has previously sued Fashion Nova over apparel and footwear that allegedly used ‘identical, confusingly similar, or substantially indistinguishable imitations’ of the three-stripe mark. The two companies reached a settlement in 2022 in which Fashion Nova agreed to stop selling products that looked like the Adidas three-stripe mark.” Kollin J. Zimmermann and R. Charles Henn Jr. of Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton are representing Adidas. (link)
