Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly addresses reporting by Action Network’s Brett McMurphy that the league was set to vote on extending invitations to Cal Baptist and Utah Valley last month: “LIke any any good athletic director when a coach departs or when you're letting a head coach go, you've always got three to five coaches in your pocket that you want to look at to fill those shoes, and it's the same as a conference commissioner with member institutions. If an institution were to depart, do you have institutions that you may have interest in pursuing? The board of directors did meet on Friday (February 28), we continue to discuss the future of the membership. Can't give you any details yet but hope to make an announcement soon.” Butterfly also says the league could go beyond 11 teams. “We continue to look at the western landscape – we’re not going to look like the ACC or the Big Ten and go all the way out east to play Big West conference games.” (link)

Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette McGlade says men’s basketball teams should budget $1-3M in revenue-sharing to remain competitive. “I think from everything that’s been benchmarked across the country, we’re feeling like that probably is the range that it’s going to be important. And I think each institution’s going to have to really take a good, hard look at their own program and try to figure out what they can really manage financially to be able to continue to be nationally relevant in the sport of men’s basketball, as a basketball-centric league. … The one thing all the (A-10) presidents did, and the ADs did, back in November was kind of put their hands in the center and say, ‘We want to maintain and continue to improve where we are.’ So hopefully, the commitment’s there and I am fully confident that it is there for the A-10.” Everyone in the league, McGlade adds, “basically made the commitment that we’re going forward with [revenue-sharing] and that we want to maintain basically to be relevant and to try to continue to be a multi-bid conference.” (link)

The Horizon League announces that all 11 member institutions will opt into the House settlement. Commissioner Julie Roe Lach: “The Division I model is modernizing and our members intend to be a player in this next chapter. We talk a lot about major experiences with leadership and by taking this step, our presidents, chancellors and athletics directors are putting critical pieces in place to continue to provide those experiences during this dynamic time in our industry.” (link)

Penn State has received a $50M naming gift from West Shore Home and will rename Beaver Stadium as West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium. According to The Athletic’s Audrey Snyder, the gift will be delivered over 15 years and brings the total funds raised for the Beaver Stadium renovation to $130.675M 10 months. The goal was to raise $134M. Trustees voted 22-8 in favor of the measure, with board member Anthony Lubrano explaining his no vote: “This is a very sad and sobering day for Penn State. Today, for many of us, the music dies. Today, the Penn State we know and love is no more because we’re about to commit the ultimate betrayal – fitting, given that Catholics around the world are celebrating the Lenten season. The only question we should ask is who will play Judas for a few silver pieces?” Lubrano argues naming the stadium after longtime Football HC Joe Paterno would raise hundreds of millions of dollars. Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry, his wife, Ayesha, and longtime Davidson supporters Don, Matt and Erica Berman, are creating an eight-figure fund to support the college’s men’s and women’s basketball teams. In addition to the Curry-Berman Fund, Curry and Matt Berman will serve in advisory roles as Asst. GMs. The Wildcats have also promoted Asst. Director for Athletic Development Austin Buntz to Asst. AD for Basketball Development/GM. Curry: “The goal for this is to invest in the next student athlete that’s coming into Davidson today. They don’t have to take cuts on what the market says they deserve to be part of the brand of what it means to be a Davidson scholar-athlete with integrity in your academic experience. The commitment to a four-year graduation process provides countless opportunities professionally in sports or as a game changer in life. And that leads into my role as an assistant GM with Matt Berman – our ability to be a resource and a sounding board for the program, but also support each student athlete, to develop personal relationships with each of them to help guide them every step of the way through their Davidson experience.” (link)

Arizona State received a $51.7M subsidy from the school to break even as an athletic department during FY24. ASU President Michael Crow explains that “we’ve changed the model, making Sun Devil Athletics part of the core enterprise of ASU, a part of the university in the same way as is every other college and unit. It no longer operates as an auxiliary unit solely responsible for the financial issues associated with running 26 varied intercollegiate sports. This change allows the athletic department to focus on its core function – the success of student athletes academically and athletically, and on competition.” In all, ASU reported $144M in total revenue and $144M in total expenses during FY24, with institutional support and student fees accounting for more than one-third (36%) of the revenue. The $51.7M subsidy included $40M in institutional and government support, which is more than twice the amount ASU provided its athletics department over the previous two years combined ($7.6M in 2022, $9.3M in 2023). Of that $40M, $37.6M came via in direct institutional and government support and $2.4M in indirect institutional support. (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy examines to what extent the NCAA can further monetize its basketball tournaments, and NCAA VP of Championship Business Affairs Chris Termini remarks: “I’ll say that broadly the NCAA has been entrenched in a lot of principles or ideals that the membership has long abandoned. … For example, the CFP has had a beer sponsor for a long time. There are opportunities that every day we’re talking about…that we have either not pursued or that we forfeited for a variety of reasons. Having said that, I do think there are some third rails and bright lines that we’re not going to cross into.” Meanwhile, Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman continues to advocate for merging the men’s and women’s Final Fours into one event and explains: “I think about the Grand Slams in tennis. You can synchronize the men and women in a way where the women aren’t overshadowed, where one plus one equals five. Right now, if you were to go and say, ‘Hey, we’re gonna change Wimbledon. We’re gonna put them on at the same time, but we’re gonna put the women up in Manchester and we’re gonna keep the men in Wimbledon Village,’ people would say ‘You’re crazy.’ It can be done. Tennis has proven that, and I just wish that we could find a way in college basketball to try that.” Former Learfield CRO John Brody agrees and adds that doing so would derive more value than expanding the fields. “Bringing the men’s and women’s tournaments together in a way that is creative and differentiated and innovative is bold. That’s the sort of thinking that is needed to create transformation in March Madness. I don’t think it’s adding two, four, six, eight more schools and opening up a [sponsorship] category or two.” More. (link)

ESPN SVP of Production Meg Aronowitz talks with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy about growing March Madness on the women’s side and acknowledges that while last year is likely not duplicable, the Caitlin Clark effect has “really been the catalyst for us to approach the women’s tournament in a bigger and better way, and it’s afforded us the resources to really even build on what we did last year. … It is the crown jewel of our NCAA championship portfolio. We are approaching this year with even more fervor and vigor and putting more resources behind it. Coming into this week, I think we started out the season and our ratings were down 40% year over year in women’s college basketball. And coming into this week, we’re in the black and we’re up 1%. To me, what that tells me is people love college basketball.” Aronowitz goes on to explain that “for us, the opportunities are obviously in revenue generation, right? I think we’re all in the for-profit business. And it’s great to say that we’re sold out of commercial inventory for the [Women’s] Final Four and that we’re very close to that in the rest of the women’s tournament. Our ad sales load, I think there’s only one item at this point that’s left to be sold in the women’s tournament, which is a great story to tell. What that allows us to do is be able to support the resources in the storytelling more, but more importantly, to be honest with you, it’s the whole company galvanizing around this story of March. Whereas, all due respect, five, six years ago, it would be maybe ‘SportsCenter’ would talk about it a little bit. And maybe [ESPN.com] would give us support. But [this year] we’re going to have live scoring and data all over all of our app and [ESPN.com] presence.” More. (link)

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips discussed the settlement with Florida State and Clemson during the women’s hoops tournament over the weekend and indicated that “reconciliation is something we can all learn personally and professionally. It was the right thing, but you talk about expansion, success initiatives, two major new sponsors with Geico and T. Rowe Price, you come up with the ability to have some resolution to some legal battles – viewership now will be a part of how we distribute dollars – the league is better with Florida State and Clemson and Clemson and Florida State are better being in the league. So, it took a lot of effort, a lot of work, but I'm really pleased where it's all ended. At the end of the day, no one can tell me that this league isn't stronger for all the things that I mentioned that we've gone through over the last not only two or three weeks, but over the last probably 18 months.” (link)

MAC Commissioner/DI Council Vice Chair Jon Steinbrecher joined AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz at the 2025 NCAA Convention to offer insight into the House settlement, eligibility concerns, conference realignment, sportsmanship and more. Steinbrecher calls for an increase in “clarity” as well as assistance from Congress to address key governance and structural issues facing the industry today and emphasizes the need to return to a focus on “educational outcomes” instead of short-term economic gains for athletes and athletic departments. Regarding the future of MAC membership, Steinbrecher shares that his team has been engaged in a “strategic thinking process” to lay out possible directions for the league given a variety of scenarios in the post-House era. On the latter topic, Steinbrecher remarks: “I can’t see six months down the road, forget five years. So we're trying to tee up what are the big issues and try to at least put some pegs in the board, at least make sure we're touching on these things and perhaps setting a direction, but not laying out all the tactical and strategic things.” As for the consequences of the House Settlement, Steinbrecher explains that “I don't know that it'll change our sports sponsorship. My sense would be – and I think this is nationally, and I'm reading it more and more – there certainly will be programs that you'll have more of a national outlook, and there may be programs where you have more of a regional conference outlook. And I'm not foreshadowing anything going on in our conference; I don't know on that, but that seems to make a lot of sense.” Full Q&A. (link)

Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez covers several topics with The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman and Rob Dauster, including March Madness expansion. Nevarez believes basketball is “good the way it is. I'm open to the conversation about expansion…it ain’t broke, let's not break it. If we can be additive, let's be additive, but there's a lot in basketball. You have to honor the conference championships, you have a long season – one can argue that the best teams are in the field. Is more access better? Perhaps, but not to the point of harming a really good championship.” Nevarez goes on to explain that she’s “against multiple AQs in any format. If there's an expansion and we all have a shot at those spots, let's go, let's have it done on the floor, not in the meeting room beforehand with automatic AQs. So, that's kind of where I line up because are we going to get those spots? Maybe sometimes and when we do it's amazing, and it's usually with a very, very deserving team that really performs. … Again, I'm open to the conversation as long as we don't completely reformat what is already a good thing.” On conference expansion, Nevarez maintains the league is in a good position, explaining that “we have our membership, we’re moving forward. We’re taking a pause on expansion, so we’re no longer shopping right now. … What I really appreciate about our new members is the excitement they're bringing. I mean, they are already using the year or so before they join us to do all those things to make sure they're not coming in at the bottom of the league, and that was a very important piece of our negotiation conversation. They all are in it to compete.” Full podcast. (link)

Michigan State AD Alan Haller remarked ahead of this weekend’s men’s basketball matchup with Michigan that “I’m focused on what we're doing. But how we win and lose against the school in Ann Arbor is important, and I want to beat them. … We're still competing against Penn State, Ohio State, Ann Arbor with a budget of millions and millions of dollars less, and that's important. It's important to our community. There are no excuses. And what I want to do is sustain excellence and I want our teams to be able to compete year in and year out. I think we're building that foundation to be able to do that. That's what makes me proud — that our student-athletes in a lot of our sports have the opportunity to win. It wasn't always that way.” Haller also indicated that at least 75% of the Spartans’ revenue-sharing pool will go to football, with men’s basketball receiving the next-highest amount. From there, he explains that “we have a really good challenge for us in that the expectation is that hockey still is supported, women's basketball is supported, volleyball is supported. And obviously we have to heavily support men's basketball and football. So we have a good problem, but there are other schools that won't focus on other teams outside of football and men’s basketball, and that's not what we're going to do.” (link)

North Texas has raised over $6M of its ~$10M goal to expand its athletic center, according to Mean Green AD Jared Mosley, who adds: “We have a number of six- and seven-figure asks in the last two weeks that I feel really good about. Assuming we can land a few of those, I feel like come May 31 we should be at a place where we can hopefully go to the campus board and seek permission to move forward in breaking ground on phase one.” The school’s plan is to expand the 45,000-square-foot facility in two phases, with the first phase focusing on the strength and conditioning area. Mosley also says UNT plans to bring NIL operations in-house in the coming months, and “our goal is to try to push as quickly as we can to make sure we’re in the top third of the American.” Looking to the future, Mosley cites growing the donor base as a key challenge: “I’ve been able to look at the metrics that assess value for institutions in the realignment process. It does not surprise me that we stack up in the top three or four in the American in nearly every category, including win-loss. The areas that we fall drastically short are donor engagement, alumni engagement and TV viewership. … If down the road another door opens, we’re going to have those things in a drastically different place if we want to be ready for that opportunity.” (link); Full press conference. Connecticut Men’s Basketball HC Dan Hurley revealed on 60 Minutes that “50% of my roster or more is at least considering going in the portal, if not already knows what school that they’re going to. Yeah, and in a couple of those cases, they’ve already talked to the coaching staff at the future school and have an idea of what their NIL is going to be there. … The level of volatility in college sports, this has now become a year-to-year proposition. The game has changed completely.” Hurley also remarked that there is a “path” to winning a third consecutive national championship, adding that he will feel a sense of failure if the Huskies don’t three-peat. “Once you’ve done it, anytime that you don’t do it, deep down inside you’re not gonna look at those years the same way. There’s going to be a feeling of failure that comes with that. Fail, fail, I mean it’s fail. I can live with it. It won’t be this offseason of pain and suffering. … I’ll be able to live with it but it will still be a failure.” (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer reports from the NCAA Elite Football Student-Athlete Symposium that ran concurrently with the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. The three-day event included 20 high-profile current college football players who are either on the verge of the NFL but ineligible for the draft or who opted to return to school for another season. Texas linebacker Anthony Hill Jr., a rising junior, tells Fischer: “I learned a lot of new stuff from this, the latest one just being able to know that you’ve got a [players association] when you go to the next level, learning about money and savings, and kind of being myself and learning how to express yourself with [the media].” NCAA Director of Football Enforcement Chris Howard explains that “when I was on campus, and even when I came back to the national office, there was a lot of misinformation out there by individuals who were financial advisers or agents. … We built [the symposium] out trying to figure out programming that, one, can inform student-athletes, but also point them in the right direction to ask additional questions. As they go through this process, because it is a unique process not too many people go through, we are trying to help them with the transition from being here as a collegiate student-athlete to eventually becoming a professional athlete.” More. South Carolina Gamecock Club Chief Revenue & Data Officer Dan Stahl joins Connect's Kristen Eargle on the latest episode of The Career Hustle. Stahl talks about his career path, specific projects he’s led, staying educated as the industry changes and offers career advice for young professionals. Stahl explains that diving into data and learning where the industry was headed in 2015 has made a significant impact in where he is today. "Innovation and leaning into your skill set is really important. Something I try to tell our young employees is to be proactive. Go find things to do on your own rather than waiting for your boss to tell you to go do something. I think when you show that, when you show results, it’s only going to help you grow your career.” To stay up to speed, Stahl says he’s not shy about leaning on peers “and not being afraid to say, ‘Hey, what did you do here?’ … And then taking those learnings and looking at how we’re set up at South Carolina and seeing how we can do that here? And it won't be the same, it'll be different, but maybe we can do something similar here to make it work and work better for our fans.” Full conversation on Connect. (link)

USA Today’s Matt Hayes envisions the possible long-term impact of hiring NFL personnel executives for college GM roles and writes: “Player procurement and the salary cap is everything. That’s why NFL coaches are typically fired long before general managers. Because NFL owners (see: university presidents) don’t want to know how the sausage is made. They just want results, and when they’re looking for reasons why it’s not working, they typically seek guidance from the one clear buffer between them and the obviously self-served opinion of the head coach. They ask the GM, who then tells the owner that the talent is in place to win. I just buy the groceries, I don’t cook the meal. See where this is headed? … What university president and/or athletic director in their right mind is going to fire a coach and general manager if the losses pile up? You’re not going to run off the guy who understands the salary cap and how to structure it, and salaries and budgets and everything that goes with it. Because you don’t want to do it, and don’t want to start all over and hire another person to do it their way — unless you absolutely, positively have to. … In less than four years, college football has nearly completed this blind metamorphosis into a cheap facsimile of the NFL. Once players become employees (that’s the next step) and collectively bargain, we’ll have reached peak imitation. The vacuum is being filled, everyone. Be careful what you wish for.” (link)
