The DII Basketball brackets were released last night. On the Women’s side, Bentley, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Edinboro, Grand Valley State, Pittsburg State, North Georgia, Texas Woman’s and Union are the number one seeds. More from Ferris State AD Steve Brockelbank’s Small College Conversation as he dives into the culture of success for the Bulldogs and the investment in their programs. In evaluating where to invest and benchmarking programs against peers, Brockelbank states: “It comes back to those conversations that I have with head coaches. What is it that you need to make a run at a national championship? What does that look like for you? And what is it that we're not providing you that you need to make that run? It's that conversation to me that's more important than necessarily benchmarking because each institution has its unique nuances, but what is it that we need? So that, to me, that's where it begins is with that conversation.” Brockelbank credits the success to the “synergy within our athletic department. Our coaches are fantastic at building relationships with our student-athletes, which I think is where it always begins. […] I think for our coaches, they spend so much time with each other. You'll see a head coach in a head coach's office all the time. They'll be just sharing ideas, talking about situations they're in, how would you handle this, and what are your thoughts here, and so our coaches have done such a fantastic job of building relationships with each other, having an open door policy for all of the other head coaches and assistant coaches. So you see our coaches exchanging information all the time. Some people say, well, you have 10 people on your football staff, full-time coaches and I go, well, we really have, when you think about it, a whole department of full-time coaches that share ideas with each other.” Full conversation on BOSCA. Seven Sonoma State student-athletes have sued the university, Interim President Emily Cutrer and Cal State University System Chancellor Mildred García for intentional misrepresentation, fraudulent concealment, fraudulent inducement, negligent misrepresentation and more. The suit claims the institution recruited these student-athletes, most of whom enrolled this academic year, with the knowledge these programs would be eliminated and that the parties involved failed to follow appropriate regulations to make these decisions. The lawsuit seeks to prevent SSU from “unlawfully cutting athletics and numerous academic programs, severely damaging the college careers of countless Sonoma State students.” (link)
