West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey and Attorney General John “JB” McCuskey announce they will investigate the NCAA men’s basketball selection committee after the West Virginia men’s basketball team was controversially denied a bid to March Madness. Sportico’s Daniel Libit: “Standing before a podium emblazoned with the phrase ‘National Corrupt Athletic Association,’ Morrisey, a first-term Republican, called WVU’s tourney exclusion a ‘miscarriage of justice and robbery at the highest level.’ He sharply criticized the selection committee’s decision to award one of its final bids to North Carolina, whose athletic director, Bubba Cunningham, chaired the selection committee. Cunningham has said he recused himself from being present in the room when any decisions involving UNC were made, but his explanation has failed to quell his chorus of critics. Morrisey, now leading that tune, dismissed Cunningham’s claims of neutrality, saying they ‘don’t pass the smell test.’” As such, Morrisey has directed McCuskey to investigate whether any “backyard deals, backroom dealings, corruption, bribes or any nefarious activities” influenced the selection process. McCuskey is “hopeful” the NCAA will work with his office to put to rest concerns that the selection process “is a completely subjective analysis,” and Morrisey later indicated it was “premature to talk about litigation” and that he also hoped the NCAA would “want to work collaboratively” with them. NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt released a statement explaining that “after the NIT bracket was released Sunday evening, it was brought to the NIT's attention that one of the teams scheduled to participate in the tournament had also committed to a non-NCAA affiliated postseason event. In an effort to secure another participating team, the NIT prematurely extended an invitation to the South Alabama Jaguars, prior to learning that the original team chose to accept its invitation to the NIT. Regrettably, the NIT rescinded its invitation to South Alabama. We understand the emotional impact this confusion created, and we sincerely apologize to South Alabama, Head Coach Richie Riley, and all the student-athletes for the error." Riley calls this a “meaningless apology to the most meaningful group of players I’ve ever coached! What they did to us last night is inexcusable! These guys in our locker room don’t deserve this and it’s sad your idea of making it right is a copy and paste apology!” (link)

Cal and Stanford men’s basketball coaches and players say the positives outweighed the negatives in their first ACC season, and Bears AD Jim Knowlton tells The Mercury News’ Mike Barber: “Everyone loved the Pac-12. It was magnificent in so many ways. But I honestly think what we learned is that, because of the distribution challenges with the Pac-12 Network, it really was a regional brand. I think every one of our 550,000 alums are seeing that this is really helping us be a national brand.” While that expanded visibility didn’t translate into attendance this season, Cal HC Mark Madsen says there’s excitement building around next season’s home slate. “[Duke], North Carolina, Louisville, Notre Dame, USC, Vanderbilt. If there’s ever a year for season tickets at Cal, this is the year. These are going to be sellouts. It’s going to be an unbelievable environment, and we’re going to be playing high-level basketball against the top teams.” Knowlton adds: “If I’m a betting man, I’d say Haas Pavilion is going to be packed. It’s going to be sold out. We’re excited to have Duke at our house. We’re excited to have North Carolina.” Meanwhile, officials from both schools say they learned valuable lessons about the travel difficulties, and Cardinal HC Kyle Smith explains he told his players they’re “astronauts,” adding: “We’re kind of the first ones out here, journeying into space and figuring this thing out. I’m sure there will be things that we’ll take away that — practices we’ll do better.” (link)

Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders explains the direction he’d like to go with the spring game: “The Spring Game will be televised on ESPN2. … We’ve got to sell this thing out and pack this thing because the way the trend is going, you never know if this is going to be the last spring game. I don’t believe in that. I don’t really want to condone that. I would like to play in the spring. Actually, I (would) like to play against another team in the spring. That’s what I’m trying to do right now. To have a competitive (game) against your own guys kind of gets monotonous. You really can’t tell the level of your guys because, you know, it’s the same old, same way. Everybody kind of knows each other. Towards the end, I would like to style it like the pros. I would like to practice against someone for a few days, then you have the spring game and I think the public will be satisfied with that tremendously. I think it’s a tremendous idea. I’ve told those personnel who should understand that it’s a tremendous idea.” (link)

Five-star QB prospect Ryder Lyons tells On3’s Ari Wasserman and Andy Staples the reason so many recruits of his caliber don’t publicly talk about their NIL endeavors is because “if you do, you get labeled as someone who is chasing money. The thing is, 99% of the world, if you offered $150K more to take this job, most people are taking it. I think people don’t want to talk about it because you get bashed online. You get bashed on social media.” Wasserman subsequently observes: “Compensating high-level athletes has become normal. Talking about it hasn’t. There are multiple reasons why that could be the case. Let’s start at the obvious. College athletes taking money for their talents was illegal for decades and whenever they did it, it was under the table and deemed immoral. That was a form of cheating for all of our lives, so it’s going to take some time before fans catch up and realize this isn’t only normal, but should probably be promoted. Secondly, there is an entitlement factor. If you talk to coaches and people who cover recruiting, many will tell you kids have changed because the financial implications of their decisions have entered the space. We can argue whether that’s fair or illogical, but the truth is, things always change when a bag of money is put on the table. The difference now? That bag is taxable income. It isn’t shady. It isn’t cheating. It isn’t immoral. It’s reasonable compensation.” More. (link)

The AAC is focused on Memphis, Tampa, Birmingham and Wichita as possible host cities for next year’s men’s basketball tournament, according to Commissioner Tim Pernetti, who says Jacksonville also submitted a bid, but the league is focused on these four. Tampa, Birmingham and Wichita put in bids to host both tournaments, while Memphis’ bid was only for the men’s. Pernetti notes the league isn’t necessarily looking for a long-term deal with a specific site, and he hopes to announce a decision by this year’s Final Four. (link)

The estimated construction cost for the new facility, which would include an arena for hockey and basketball games, practice courts and training facilities, is between $300M and $350M. Northeastern plans to sell $400M in bonds for the arena while the remaining $100M will be used for other capital projects on its Boston campus. (link)

Your NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament bracket is set with Auburn, Duke, Houston and Florida as the top four seeds, respectively. (link); As always, there is some controversy. This year, the biggest talking point appears to be North Carolina’s inclusion, and CBS’ Seth Davis invited Tar Heels AD/Selection Committee Chair Bubba Cunningham to explain to those unfamiliar with the committee’s protocols why his position as committee chair didn’t tip the scales in UNC’s favor. Cunningham: "Obviously, I’m gonna defer that to [Sun Belt Commissioner/Committee Vice Chair] Keith [Gill], but all of the policies and procedures were followed, and Keith can address exactly how North Carolina was discussed because I was not in the room for any of that." Gill explained that “as the vice chair, I managed all the conversations that we had about North Carolina, and we had quite a few. Our policies require the AD of any school to recuse themselves and actually leave the room for those discussions. And they're not allowed to participate in any vote as well. … Saturday night, we took our final vote. We voted in four teams in the field on Saturday night, and we had a contingency vote. The contingency vote — that was the last team in the field. And it was based on Memphis and UAB. If Memphis won that game, then that was gonna free up a spot in the tournament and that was gonna be North Carolina. If UAB had won, then Memphis was gonna be in the tournament, UAB would have been in the tournament and North Carolina would've been the first team out." (link)

USA Today’s Dan Wolken emphasizes that “from everything I've learned about Cunningham over all these years, I have zero reason to doubt his integrity and have always held him in high regard among his peers. I also believe that both Cunningham and the other members of the selection committee did everything by the book. … And still…it’s a miserable look for this entire process. So miserable that maybe it's time for the NCAA to ditch the model of athletics directors and conference commissioners choosing who gets in, because these kinds of sticky situations are going to happen. And the consequences are so immense for schools and conferences that every single piece of this needs to appear independent and pristine to the public. Unfortunately for Cunningham, this isn’t going to pass that test – even if neither he nor the committee did anything wrong.” Cunningham later remarked that "it weighed on me a lot. I’ll say it also weighs on commissioners and other ADs when it comes to seeding when a commissioner has multiple teams under consideration. You have a personal, professional responsibility at your institution but you're on a committee that represents the membership, and I think people recognize that and honor it. I think you can sometimes say less in any setting because you want to make sure you don't even get up to that line of integrity, and I think that's just part of what we have to work through the way the committee is designed to represent the membership." (link)

More from Cunningham as he points to San Diego State, Texas, Xavier, & North Carolina as the last four in. On the value of strength of schedule: “Yeah, we had to look at the non-conference strength of schedule but we also looked at the conference. When you look at the overall strength of schedule for the entire year, we talk about a full body of work. Quite frankly, teams that don't schedule hard in the non-conference have to rely on an incredible conference season with great teams within their league, and this year for Texas it worked out. [...] Indiana didn't have a single loss outside the first quadrant. But they didn't play that well in the challenging non-conference schedule. So the metrics were just slightly below the ones that ended up getting in. [...] Yeah, every game matters, and I do think those losses were tough losses for them (‘big margin’ losses to Tennessee & Ole Miss), but they had a great year. Louisville is an outstanding team, and hats off to what they've been able to do, Pat Kelsey coming in there and turning that thing around. They had an outstanding year. Only one loss in Quad 2. But again, as I just mentioned just about five minutes ago, the quality of this field is really good, and when you're scrubbing teams up and down and trying to compare them, every last kind of blemish on your record might move you down a notch or a big win may move you up. I look forward to watching them in the tournament. I think they could have a great tournament.” (link)

Your NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament bracket is also set with UCLA, South Carolina USC and Texas earning the No. 1 seeds. Arkansas Deputy AD for Student-Athlete Wellness/Chief Diversity Officer/SWA Derita Dawkins, who chaired the selection committee, explains why the Bruins got the nod over the Gamecocks for the top overall seed: "Two key factors between UCLA and South Carolina. One was the head-to-head matchup. The other was one of our criteria is competitive in losses and South Carolina suffered a 29-point loss to UConn. Those were the two key differences in those resumes." Dawkins also explains why Notre Dame dropped to a No. 3 seed: “Being a little bit of a research nerd, I’m going to use a term. It was an interaction effect. It wasn’t just what happened with Notre Dame in terms of them losing three of five down the stretch, it was also what the teams that came out ahead of them did in their conference tournaments.” (link, link, link)
|
More Dawkins, starting with the Ivy League getting three teams in the tourney (Harvard, Columbia, Princeton): “We had to watch the tournament to see within the whole the field where those teams would be, what seed they would earn. Harvard obviously being the AQ and leading the Ivy League, then got the higher seed, if you just look at those three teams in isolation. Columbia being at 41, their best win was over Harvard. But again, with Harvard being the AQ, those three teams, again, had some similar records, which is why you find them so closely seeded at 40, 41 and 44. Again, you said you cover the Ivy, so you know what it looks like in terms of what their overall regular season looks like and how they meet, et cetera. But like Columbia's best win was over Harvard at 35 in The Net, 34 in the final, I believe. And so that's why you see them back to back. And then a little distance between them and Princeton, which their resumés support.” Last four in: Iowa State, Princeton, Washington, Columbia. Lots more. (link)

The NIT bracket is set with SMU, Dayton, UC Irvine and San Francisco receiving No. 1 seeds. (link)

Virginia Tech, James Madison, Saint Joseph’s and Colorado have earned No. 1 seeds in the 32-team WBIT, for which the field is set. (link)

Virginia Tech President Timothy Sands sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Jason Belzer at the 2025 NCAA Convention to offer insight into the Hokies’ approach to the post-House era, including how the athletic department will participate in revenue-sharing while providing a transformational experience for student-athletes across all sport programs. Sands reflects on the long-tail impact of focusing on student-athlete well-being based on surveys conducted by the university: “That [student-athlete] experience really sets you up for a life of purpose and is something we really want to preserve. … The House settlement will actually give us the freedom to do more for our student-athletes.” Sands and Belzer also discuss the revenue gap between the Big Ten and SEC versus the ACC and Big 12 conferences; the economic impact of athletic success on the Virginia Tech and Blacksburg communities; how to evaluate the emergence of private equity in sports; and the possibility of football and basketball breaking off to a more “professionalized” model. Sands on private equity: “My initial reaction is you wouldn't want to do that if you don't have to…[but] I think some institutions are going to find themselves with a difficult decision: do we compete and opt in fully and go to the cap on revenue-sharing or do we just let it ride and go do as much as we can and can we fall into the next tier? That’s a difficult decision because you’re going to be making a decision about the character of the institution and the athletics program for many years to come.” More on ADU. (link)
|
UTSA AD Lisa Campos declines to go into specifics on revenue-sharing but says she’s been working with coaches to determine what type of support will be most beneficial: "When we have conversations with our coaches, No. 1, with revenue share, what’s really important to you? What’s going to help you be competitive? Some coaches are still talking about facilities. They're not even thinking about NIL, because it hasn’t reached their sport yet. That’s what’s driving the conversation, is what’s the priority for our sports programs?” As for the Roadrunners’ overall rev-share budget, Campos says the goal is to remain on par with the AAC’s top schools. “We’re really committed to being competitive in the American, and I think we’ve done that in a lot of different ways. That’s always our goal, is what is it going to take in all of our resources and facilities, operations, this new revenue share. We’re always looking at wanting to be competitive.” Meanwhile, the San Antonio News-Express’ Greg Luca notes Campos will be “working from a financial ledger that listed $52.9M in total revenues against $48.7M in total expenses for the 2023-24 fiscal year. Both figures marked new highs for the program and continued an upward trend after the totals hovered around $30M from Campos’ arrival in 2017 through 2021.” Additionally, Campos explains the Roadrunners' arrangement with the AAC is different now from the day the program signed on to join the league, though she added that UTSA’s $4.2M distribution for 2023-24 should be “very close” to the figures for the next few years. “We had some different conversations with the commissioner, and some adjustments were made. They want all of us to have competitive equity.” (link)

Omaha AD Adrian Dowell talks with Connect's Anthony Grassi about his approach to forecasting and preparing his department for the changes ahead. Dowell also talks about his contract extension, installing the right infrastructure for revenue generation, hockey’s role in the Mavs’ future and prioritizing investments in the department. Dowell also explains the philosophy of “selective excellence” and tells Grassi: “Unless you’re at the highest level, you've always been preaching and practicing selective excellence. The reality is we can't be good at everything, so this has been a very real reality for us forever. You can't invest the same amount in every sport as you do some of your main revenue-generating sports. So for us, let’s select the sports – you know, the formula might be different school to school – but what can we win in? What moves the needle for us? In what sports do we feel there's ROI? I understand there’s ROI in everything but certainly we've got to become a little bit more focused on really focusing on resources and in some cases reallocating resources to those sport programs that can give us the things we need.” (link)

SEC Assoc. Commissioner for Basketball Garth Glissman goes deeper with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy about the league’s banner year in men’s hoops and explains: “The way I look at the SEC is it’s this incredibly iconic tradition-rich conference. And within the context of all of that tradition, men’s basketball is still very much a growth opportunity. It’s this unique contrast. On one hand, we have all of the tradition and passion that makes the SEC special, but yet this unique growth opportunity that exists within men’s basketball.” Portnoy notes that “SEC-controlled games on ESPN have averaged 1.28M viewers, up 25% year over year and the highest average for such games in a decade,” and Glissman observes: “That’s the beauty of the opportunity in front of us is that the SEC has been around longer than the NBA, so the tradition and the fans and the passion is all there. But yet, there’s this widespread recognition that there’s still a lot of upside in basketball. … My message to college basketball is we have to work harder to compete for our fans. Our fans and people everywhere are increasingly distracted. They have more entertainment options than before, and so we have to be more strategic with our scheduling.” (link)

Pac-12 Enterprises SVP Michael Molinari joins the Canzano & Wilner podcast and shares how he explains his unit’s value proposition to potential members: “I go back to we can make your product better because we have that experience all in one place. So our group can do a game at Boise on Tuesday and Corvallis on Wednesday. Or we could do a noon and a 7:00 and instead of flying all these people to all these places – that's one savings, for sure – you get experience that doesn't have to fly. They just drive to our building. So, higher quality, number one. Number two, some feel the best model is to build very expensive control rooms at every single university. I do think there is a benefit if you're using that to help your scholastic model where you're teaching students as part of your curriculum, but if that's not part of your curriculum and you're just building that to provide television, I mean, I think to the layperson wouldn't it make more sense to build one building with all the equipment and service 12 schools or 15 schools or whatever it is rather than building 15 different buildings? So, that's kind of the basic math there. I think it just makes a lot more sense.” Regarding Pac-12 Enterprises’ role in Olympic sports, Molinari explains: “I'd say there's actually some niche groups that are interested in some of that, especially on the women's side. I think the growth of women's sports has been pretty interesting, so I think you might see maybe a name you weren't expecting that might be involved in some of the Olympic sports.” Full podcast. The Office for Civil Rights has initiated Title VI investigations into 45 universities “amid allegations that these institutions have violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act (1964) by partnering with ‘The Ph.D. Project,’ an organization that purports to provide doctoral students with insights into obtaining a Ph.D. and networking opportunities, but limits eligibility based on the race of participants,” according to the Department of Education, whose secretary, Linda McMahon, says: “The agency has already launched Title VI investigations into institutions where widespread antisemitic harassment has been reported and Title IX investigations into entities which allegedly continue to allow sex discrimination; today’s announcement expands our efforts to ensure universities are not discriminating against their students based on race and race stereotypes. Students must be assessed according to merit and accomplishment, not prejudged by the color of their skin. We will not yield on this commitment.” Full list of universities under investigation, the majority of which are Division I. (link)
