Georgia Tech AD J Batt’s five-year contract extension through 2029 includes an increase in base pay from $547K to $979K with $100K annual increases, according to CollegeAD. Batt will continue to earn $271K in supplemental compensation each year. If Batt is let go without cause, he would be owed 60% of all remaining base and supplemental pay. Should Batt leave before the deal ends, he would owe 30% of that amount. (link)

More from the NCAA’s Q&A on its waiver that allows junior college and non-NCAA student-athletes to compete in the 2025-26 academic year. Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter points out that to take advantage of the waiver, student-athletes’ final (4th) season of competition must be the 2024-25 school year and they must have time remaining on their five-year eligibility clock. … Also, only athletes who previously played at non-NCAA schools can take advantage of the waiver. It doesn’t apply to athletes who previously played one or more seasons at a DII or DIII prior to playing at a DI.” (link)

UNLV AD Erick Harper misspoke last week when he told the Board of Regents the Rebels only has the funds to pay for the first two years of new Football HC Dan Mullen’s five-year, $17.5 contract, according to the school, which explained last night that Harper made the comments with incomplete information regarding Mullen’s salary, and that his contract and the contracts of its other coaches are completely covered. A statement from the school reads, in part: “UNLV athletics can fulfill all of its coaching contracts. To clarify, multiple funding sources cover the costs of all athletics department salaries, including revenues (ticket sales, multi-media rights, etc.), philanthropy, conference revenue distributions, and direct and indirect institutional support. UNLV Athletics is dedicated to providing an exceptional experience for our student-athletes, staff and administration.” (link, link)

More on the deal between the Arizona Board of Regents & William Morris Endeavor (WME) that involves two projects: a “comprehensive athletics needs assessment for the three universities, at a cost of $275K (plus $35K in travel expenses)” and a year’s worth of “expert consultation on athletic strategy and emerging trends” for $120K. “The agreement was signed in January by Michael Zavodsky, a partner at WME Sports and former NBA executive. Its execution coincided with Arizona State head football coach Kenny Dillingham—who has been represented by WME—receiving board approval for a contract extension and salary increase. That work purports to include advice for ‘capitalizing on underutilized revenue streams’ and ‘changes in NCAA governance and regulation.’” The agreement is WME’s first known athletic advisory deal with a university, and Sportico’s Daniel Libit points out “it’s notable—and potentially complicated—that the consulting is being managed at the system level, rather than on an individual school basis. … Under the arrangement, WME is required to consult regularly with and report directly to the regents. For instance, the board’s leadership is expected to engage in biweekly consultation sessions with WME on athletic department matters, such as NIL compliance—issues that would typically be outside the scope of a governing body’s responsibilities.” More from Libit. Vanderbilt announces a $1.5M matching gift from alumnus Mark H. Carter to support the Commodores’ men’s basketball NIL initiatives through the Anchor Impact collective. Vandy AD Candice Lee: “The NIL space is of paramount importance in collegiate athletics. Through Anchor Impact, it also represents an opportunity for differentiation for Vanderbilt Athletics, where collaborative support is part of our university DNA. Mark’s matching gift is a wonderful way for Commodore Nation to get involved with Anchor Impact for the first time or double down on their commitment.” (link)

Stanford Men’s Basketball HC Kyle Smith offers an interesting suggestion for improving the league’s NET ranking: “I’ve talked to [ACC Commissioner] Jim [Phillips] about relegation, so this might be my moment, trying to go two divisions, so you’d have a top play top. They’ll probably be mad I mentioned that, but I do think that would give you more opportunities if you played everyone twice in the top division. [It would be similar to the UEFA] Champions and Premier League — I’ve been working on this. … You would have two divisions and then at the end of the year, you’d relegate someone, but that top division would play each other twice so you’d get more Quad 1s, and it would be pretty neat.” Specifically, the proposal split the ACC into two nine-team divisions based on overall winning percentage with the worst team in the top division being relegated to the bottom division at the end of every season while the best team in the bottom division moves up to replace them. Under the system, the Cardinal would be flirting with relegation, which he acknowledges: “Yeah, I think, you know, to be honest, we didn’t win enough non-conference games, I think, as a whole. That’s where our NET was down a little bit. We had the same conversations in the Pac-12.” (link)

Dartmouth President Sian Leah Beilock and AD Mike Harrity are co-teachers in COCO 40: The American University Athlete in the 21st Century, which takes an interdisciplinary look at the history, identity, physiology, cognition, and economics of college sports. Harrity, who teaches the economics module, explains that “modern college athletics is complex and interdisciplinary by nature, and it requires cross-institutional collaboration to do our work well. It only makes sense to mirror that same cross-institutional collaboration in a course designed to engage and facilitate student understanding of the university athlete in the 21st century. … We’re at the biggest inflection point in college athletics history. The financial realities are so unsettled right now that there are no definitive answers. So what an opportunity for students to bring their insights and questions.” Beilock adds: “At Dartmouth we teach students how to think, not what to think, and I try and embody that in how I teach. I want the students not to just accept the conclusions of an author or an idea at face value. I want them to challenge the data, and I try to show examples of where researchers have challenged each other. I believe that when you create these kinds of brave spaces where you’re pushing at different ideas, you get better outcomes, and you get the new insight or discovery.” (link)

Learfield offers insights and highlights from the hoops regular season, during which impressions on YouTube and Instagram increased by 161% and 26% YoY, respectively. Meanwhile, engagement rates on Facebook and X were up 12% and 267%, respectively. Overall, the SEC led the way with 27M+ social media impressions, followed by the ACC (25M+), Big Ten (24M+) and Big 12 (19M+). Additionally, “when fans wanted more in-depth information beyond the quick, bite-sized content on social media, they relied on their team’s official athletics sites for deeper highlights and updates. Website pageviews for men’s basketball increased 17% YoY. The Big 12 saw the biggest increase in men’s hoops at 23% while the SEC enjoyed the highest YoY increase in women’s hoops at 25%. Men’s total basketball ticket sales remained relatively flat YoY, although “big games and top-ranked opponents drove secondary ticket sales growth,” as the number of men’s basketball secondary tickets resold increased from 468K to 511K. For women’s hoops, that number picked up from 62K to 80K, while the overall number of women’s tickets resold increased from 5.7M to 5.9M. (link)

NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt joins NCAA correspondent Andy Katz and emphasizes that conference tournament games are considered as part of a team’s overall body of work “and what those games are matters. As the committee always says, “it’s who’d you play, it’s where'd you play, it’s how you did. Some of those games played this week in conference tournaments will be Quad 1 games, which will be really important, or Quad 2 games, which will be important as well. Some will be Quad 3 or 4 games that really don't carry the weight of a Quad 1 or Quad 2 result. So, every game matters, every game is counted and, yet, games that are played this week don't take on more significance than games that were played a month ago” – or, Katz adds, in November and December. Gavitt also notes that the selection committee selected 18 at-large teams to make the field on its initial ballot and added eight more from the “under consideration” board for a total of 26, several of which could still earn AQs by winning their conference tournaments. The initial ballot had 35 teams that were under consideration + 18 regular season champions, that were not initially voted in as under-consideration teams, that were added to that group for a total of 53 teams under consideration. The House implementation team has determined that third-party NIL deals that pay athletes after the July 1 effective date are subject to the clearinghouse, as are third-party NIL deals signed after the settlement’s approval (presumably in April), per Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger. Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter: “Not new info, but it’s important info for entities deemed ‘associated entities or individuals’ since their deals will be subject to the fair market value analysis. A big issue with this whole process is disclosure. All deals won’t be disclosed, same as now. There is also probably a complaint ready to be filed that will challenge this whole system on antitrust grounds. Could be short-lived.” Heitner Legal Founder Darren Heitner adds: “Also, future athletes didn’t agree to this alternative dispute resolution process nor the FMV analysis. This will go down in flames. … Maybe the hope is to dig as big a hole as possible, which will eventually cause Congress to bail them out.” Winter agrees, adding: “The injunctive relief settlement tries to prevent future athletes from bringing injunctive relief claims. But it won’t prevent them from bringing damages claims. Which would probably be easy to prove when an athlete has a deal for $X but Deloitte says it can only be $Y.” (link)

Idaho State intends to opt out of revenue-sharing for the 2025-26 academic year but opt in the following season. Bengals AD Pauline Thiros explains that opting out “means we are not adopting the more restrictive roster limits that we’ll have to adhere to. We’d like for our coaches to have more time to accommodate that transition without hurting our student athletes. We’ll have two years to make the cuts to our rosters.” Thiros says the sports most impacted by the roster limitations would be soccer, track and field and softball. By waiting a year to adopt those tighter roster limitations, ISU’s coaches will have more time to accommodate the incoming athletes who have already signed to compete at ISU, and to have normal attrition of graduation and expiration of eligibility help pare the rosters without harming athletes. Further, Thiros does not believe waiting a year to opt in will hurt the department in the short term. “We have a lot of high-performing student-athletes that allow us to spread equivalency pretty far anyway. We can still have 85 guys on scholarships, and we’ve been trying to get that for some time.” Meanwhile, Montana State and Sacramento State were the only two Big Sky schools who notified the NCAA of their intent to opt in next school year, although Big Sky football affiliate schools UC Davis and Cal Poly have also confirmed they will opt in. (link)

Albany will not immediately opt into revenue-sharing under the House settlement, according to Great Danes AD Mark Benson, who explains: “Right now, we’re going to opt out, but we’re going to monitor and see what happens around the House settlement. I think there’s a lot of unanswered questions, some of which may be answered by then, some of which may not. … I think right now, the biggest (question) is the roster limits are something that people are concerned about losing opportunities. I think people are hoping that maybe that gets addressed. I’m not sure that it will or not.” Benson also cites concerns about Title IX and the market value of NIL deals as unanswered questions. (link)

The NCAA has issued new guidance concerning eligibility for former JUCO and non-NCAA student-athletes, which “essentially” states that “all players who'd be otherwise out of eligibility but played JUCO/NAIA/etc can play in 2025-26 EXCEPT those whose only season of non-NCAA competition was 2020-21 (COVID year),” according to Sports Illustrated’s Kevin Sweeney, who adds: “That means guys like (Iowa State’s) Curtis Jones, (Auburn’s) Denver Jones, (Bradley’s) Duke Deen and (Clemson’s) Jaeden Zackery are done. Most others, like (Auburn’s) Chad Baker-Mazara, (Vanderbilt’s) Jason Edwards, (UAB’s) Yaxel Lendeborg and many other high-level names will have another year.” (link)

Marquette Men’s Basketball HC Shaka Smart has refused to negotiate with NIL agents this spring, telling players and recruits they’ll get the same money from Marquette’s collective regardless of representation, according to Front Office Sports’ Dennis Young, who adds: “No current Marquette player lists an agent on their social media pages, and a scan of their RealGM pages does not have an agent listed for any player. Several players list a contact for Madison Dunker, Marquette’s NIL GM. Dunker works for Altius Sports Partners, a consulting firm that helps colleges with NIL strategy. She directed requests for comment to Marquette’s athletic department.” Heitner Legal Founder Darren Heitner tells Young there is a “0% chance” any other top-25 or power conference team employs a similar strategy and adds that refusing to deal with a player’s existing agent could raise legal issues – though Young does not identify what those legal issues are. (link)

Prospective men’s basketball HCs are less interested in salary and other considerations than they once were, according to USA Today’s Dan Wolken, who is told by a source: “The first question agents are asking is, what are they committed to in revenue-share this year and beyond? It always used to be, 'What do I have in facilities and recruiting and assistant salary pool?’ But now it’s, 'How much can I spend on player acquisition?'” Another person familiar with coaching searches adds: “It’s the first thing coaches want to know. If you’re at a school spending $3M to $4M on the roster and you're looking at a perceived 'better' job that isn’t going to spend that much, you’re not going to take it.” Wolken observes that may explain the hires made by Miami (FL), Florida State and Utah. “While all three decisions can be justified on their basketball merits given those coaches’ résumés and connections to the schools, it’s also true that administrations came to the decision fairly quickly they were not going to be in the market for sitting head coaches with track records of power-conference success.” Meanwhile, one coach believes wealthy schools in the Big Ten and SEC will still “find a way” to funnel more money to players than what’s outlined in the House settlement. A source cites Louisville’s hire of Pat Kelsey as a potential model for the future: “There was a lot of talk last year that they were going to reset the (salary) market. Instead, they hired Pat Kelsey for ($2.3M) and used the rest of the money to build the roster to give him a running start.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown goes over several GM contracts to find out what the job actually entails and finds the profile is “all over the map” in football and basketball. “Some programs are clearly targeting their GM to serve in more of a fundraising/development/connections role, so hiring a former reporter or famous alum would make sense. Others appear to be trying to replicate the NFL model, targeting folks with deep experience in salary cap management and player evaluations. Even other schools are simply moving staff from existing player personnel or coaching roles into a GM position. And these folks, almost without exception, report to the head football coach. Some large programs, like Georgia, are openly talking about not wanting to hire a GM, because the head football coach would always need to be deeply involved in roster management decisions.” At some institutions, GMs are operating without contracts, as is the case with UC San Diego GM Bill Carr, who is listed as an assistant coach who earns $200K per year (which Brown notes is on the high end for a non-A4 basketball GM). Meanwhile, Brown notes it’s not only non-Power 4, non-football GMs working without contract, as Boise State Football GM Brandon Jones is also currently categorized as an “at will” employee, and “Illinois, a big-budget, Big Ten, athletic department, is another school whose GM doesn’t have a formal contract.” More. Texas has self-reported five NCAA violations related to impermissible sports wagering between July 11 and Nov. 4 of 2024. The documents, acquired by the Austin American-Statesman’s David Eckert via a public records request, listed two football players, a non-student-athlete associated with the women’s tennis program, a student assistant and an uncategorized athletic department employee as the violators. The names were redacted, but Eckert notes the five individuals totaled $14,885.76 in impermissible wagers with PrizePicks, a “daily fantasy” sports website where users can wager money on athletes’ statistical performances. Traditional sports betting remains illegal in Texas, but daily fantasy sites like PrizePicks are legal. The transactions were flagged by IC360’s ProhiBet, and the assistant’s role with the department was terminated. One of the football players was declared ineligible for competition, but Texas confirmed he was later reinstated and required to repay the value of his wagering winnings to the charity of his choice. The other football student-athlete described a previous “problem” with sports wagering and sought help from his parents to quit. He placed about $9,600 in impermissible wagers while at Texas. Of his 67 wagers, two were placed on Texas’ basketball teams. UT did not impose a penalty against him because he left Texas and stopped playing college football, but the Longhorns did administer additional sports wagering education to the football team. (link)

Coyle flew back in secrecy to Minneapolis late Wednesday to fire Johnson.” One source tells Boone and Norlander: “It was ruthless.” Coyle in a statement: "I met with Ben in-person early this morning when the team returned to Minneapolis from the Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament and informed him that we were making a change in leadership. I thanked him for his dedication and for guiding the program, one he cares deeply about, for the last four years. Ben is a terrific person, and we wish him well. These decisions are difficult and are made after careful consideration and evaluation. The expectation for our program is to compete for championships, and unfortunately, we have not done that in the last four years." (link)

Before he leaves, CBS’ Dennis Dodd shares one last scoop: “Army and Navy's request to add a 13th regular-season game has been tabled by the Division I Football Oversight Committee.” The schools had hoped to add an additional game to help with not only their CFP resumes, but also their standing in the AAC, but Dodd reports there was "no support" from the Oversight Committee to honor the request. A source tells Dodd that granting the schools' request would be "a legislative beast" to get approved because of the impact on the regular season. (link)

The Department of Education’s research and civil-rights units were particularly hard hit in this week’s mass layoff of around 1,300 people. The Chronicle of Higher Education reports that government officials declined to share breakdowns of who lost their jobs, pointing instead to a news release indicating all of the department’s divisions are affected by the cuts, “with some divisions requiring significant reorganization.” However, tallies of fired union members were available, and a “rough estimate of how deeply each unit was cut can be calculated by taking the number of union job losses and comparing them to snapshots of September employment data: 22.6% of Federal Student Aid: 326 union members were cut on Tuesday from the office, which had 1,440 employees in September; 42.7% of the Office for Civil Rights: 243 union members lost their jobs at OCR, which had 568 employees in September; and 56.4% of the Institute of Education Sciences: 105 people were fired from the research arm, which had 186 employees in September.” The Chronicle cautions these numbers don’t account for employment changes since September or nonunion employees who were fired. Education Secretary Linda McMahon believes students’ test scores will go up and suggests the cuts are the first step toward eliminating the department. (link)
