Southern Virginia removes the interim tag from AD Josh Monsen, who has been leading the Knights since September. Monsen: “We really want our students to have a holistic approach in their college experience, and athletics is a big part of that. […] That’s what I love about working with our athletic programs. They’re focused on growing and increasing together. Coaches are invested in their students’ academic experience and want them to excel in the classroom as well as in their sport, and be supported for the duration that they are here on campus and beyond.” (link)

St. Olaf elevates Interim AD/SWA Kelly Mahlum to the permanent position. President Susan Rundell Singer: “Kelly's extensive experience, combined with her deep dedication to Ole Athletics, make her a great fit for this role. The future is bright for Ole Athletics, and I'm excited to see where her leadership takes us.” (link)

Colorado College will opt into the House settlement, according to AD Lesley Irvine, who adds Men’s Ice Hockey and Women’s Soccer student-athletes will not start getting paid once the settlement takes effect. “I think again what we want to share is by signaling that we're opting in, that we're really going to start to be open-minded to this landscape. It's critical that we think about what this actually means for hockey and women's soccer, as far as the trickle-down of all of this. Many of these dollars are really being directed, right or wrong, to Power 4 football and basketball, so I think we're going to prepare ourselves to keep an eye on the industry and the landscape to really get a sense of what this actually means. So for us, this is about preparation and certainly not a distinct change in what we're doing with resources.” On the impact this has on DIII student-athletes: “We really want to make sure that as we're looking at these things, we're looking at the things that were required to do for our Division I student-athletes, but then what are the things that we're also allowed to do for our Division III student-athletes that would really benefit their experience?” (link)

The NCAA DI Board of Governors has issued new guidance concerning eligibility for former JUCO and non-NCAA student-athletes, which “essentially” states that “all players who'd be otherwise out of eligibility but played JUCO/NAIA/etc can play in 2025-26 EXCEPT those whose only season of non-NCAA competition was 2020-21 (COVID year),” according to Sports Illustrated’s Kevin Sweeney. (link); Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter points out that to take advantage of the waiver, student-athletes’ final (4th) season of competition must be the 2024-25 school year and they must have time remaining on their five-year eligibility clock. … Also, only athletes who previously played at non-NCAA schools can take advantage of the waiver. It doesn’t apply to athletes who previously played one or more seasons at a DII or DIII prior to playing at a DI.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown shares more context for his reporting that several schools are seriously considering reclassifying out of Division I, noting that in addition to rising costs, the House settlement and a looming enrollment cliff, “the federal government is slashing a lot of money. You’ve probably already heard of the potentially massive cuts coming from the National Institutes of Health, cuts that represent more than $60M in lost revenue for many large research institutions. But between other cuts for agricultural research, DOE research, defense research and others, virtually every university is looking at playing defense. Schools across the country are establishing hiring freezes, and what-if scenarios are being planned out in case additional cuts are coming. These aren’t just problems for the Harvards and Stanfords of the world. Almost everybody has some level of potential risk exposure.” (link)

The AP’s Steve Megargee details the impact of growing interest in Women’s Ice Hockey at the youth level on DIII. Between 2013-14 and 2023-24, USA Hockey saw a 47.4% growth in girls participation, with the number of DIII programs growing from 52 to 78 since 2015. Wisconsin-River Falls HC Joe Cranston on the increase in talent: “I have kids on my team who were All-Americans 15 years ago who couldn’t make my team now. Kids who were Division I players 10 years ago who couldn’t make my team now. […] Overall, the skill level has gotten so much better over the years that it becomes one of those sports that was almost a no-brainer to be adding at the Division III level.” SUNY Oswego AD/Women’s Hockey Committee Chair Wendy McManus tells Megargee growth in the sport will continue as youth participation continues to grow and maintain, adding: “I do think eventually it will level off. I say that because you don’t see California schools or true West Coast schools playing hockey that much. We say ‘West’ is basically Minnesota, Wisconsin.” (link)

Department of Education Cuts…
+ The Department of Education’s research and civil-rights units were particularly hard hit in this week’s mass layoff of around 1,300 people. The Chronicle of Higher Education reports that government officials declined to share breakdowns of who lost their jobs, pointing instead to a news release indicating all of the department’s divisions are affected by the cuts, “with some divisions requiring significant reorganization.” However, tallies of fired union members were available, and a “rough estimate of how deeply each unit was cut can be calculated by taking the number of union job losses and comparing them to snapshots of September employment data: 22.6% of Federal Student Aid: 326 union members were cut on Tuesday from the office, which had 1,440 employees in September; 42.7% of the Office for Civil Rights: 243 union members lost their jobs at OCR, which had 568 employees in September; and 56.4% of the Institute of Education Sciences: 105 people were fired from the research arm, which had 186 employees in September.” The Chronicle cautions these numbers don’t account for employment changes since September or nonunion employees who were fired. Education Secretary Linda McMahon believes students’ test scores will go up and suggests the cuts are the first step toward eliminating the department. (link)
+ Under Secretary of Education during the Biden administration James Kvaal reacts to the recently announced layoffs in the education department: “These are the people who make sure federal dollars are spent according to the rules and as effectively as possible. Eliminating that capacity is not going to reduce government waste; it’s going to create more confusion.” Cato Institute Center for Educational Freedom Director Neal McCluskey does not share the same opinion: “We don’t know how many people are actually needed to execute [the department’s] jobs, and it’s time to find out if it’s been a bloated bureaucracy all along.” Of the nearly 970 unionized employees affected by the reductions, 326 were at the Office of Federal Student Aid. Before the layoffs, the FSA had about 1,400 staffers. Another agency hit hard was the Office for Civil Rights - at least 243 of the division’s about 550 staff members were let go Tuesday.
