SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey believes it would be “justified” for his league to get 14 bids to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament: “It's a unicorn league right now. We're not going to change our name, but we stand alone historically. And I think that'll be rewarded.” More, as Sankey reiterates the strength & depth of the conference: “You got somebody that's got a nice NET [ranking], but one Quad 1 win. LSU has two Quad 1 wins, for goodness' sake. We went 30-4 against the ACC. Put their high-end teams in our league, and they're in a very different place. You do that with the Big 12, they're in a very different place. [...] I hope our coaches are proud. I hope our athletics directors are proud. We had a great visit with our presidents and chancellors, where I went through some graphics of where we were from 2006 to 2015 and then 2016 and beyond. And it's been building, and it'd be nice to kick the door down, as they say.” (link)

Arizona AD Desiree Reed-Francois reflects on her first year in Tucson, says she “hates” having to implement a “competitive fee” as part of budget & competition pressures, “it was just one way for us to be able to be competitive in this new era.” Additional nuggets: “Change is not easy. But the entire country is going through this change, and it's essential. Throughout this transformation, we've remained focused on our North Star, which is supporting our student-athletes in their academic pursuits and their drive for excellence in competition. We're making meaningful progress and positioning Arizona Athletics for the future. ... We're going to emerge stronger, we're going to be more competitive and we're going to be ready to thrive. [...] This is a people business, and the people drive the culture. ... We talk about ‘high, low, high.’ We have people that are high character. Character for us is defined as selfless, smart, hardworking. Low ego. High outcome and energy.” Reed-Francois goes on to note the Wildcats’ renegotiated deal with Nike will save $2.5M annually, the new Arizona Sports Enterprises is 98% to goal with 16% more in “contract-negotiation phase” & on the topic of revenue share percentages by sport, “I'm not going to give away our trade secrets.” (link)

Wake Forest AD John Currie joins Next Up with Adam Breneman to discuss the sweeping changes in the industry and says what “this world needs is not another AD complaining. … You have to accept the fact that you cannot control the outcome. What you can control every day is ‘am I doing the best I possibly can?’” Currie also talks about his process for hiring coaches, lessons from previous AD stops, the future of the ACC, private equity and more. Currie acknowledges the ACC “does not have the same media rights value that the SEC and the Big Ten does. Candidly, Wake Forest doesn't have the same stadium size as Clemson or Florida State, but we beat Florida State three out of the last four years in football, and we won a national championship in golf two years ago and we're competing in everything. The scale at which we operate is such that we can operate efficiently and we can truly provide a world-class student-athlete experience.” When engaging with fans and donors, Currie points out that a vast majority are unaware of the recent developments in the industry, so it’s incumbent on the Deacs to inform them. “It’s a roadshow. We’ve got a bunch of slides, we go out, we sit with groups of 15 or 20 lead donors, lead individuals, and we explain it. … The best successes for me in my career have been when we've been able to have the time to be transparent and share information and talk about problems because that has built the moments of trust. And with trust comes investment, and with investment can come success, and then you get success and you get happy and you can go back and get more investment and do even more, just like businesses do with growing customers. So that's been really a key part of what we do, but it comes back to the fact that most people have no idea what we're talking about.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner reports the Pac-12 and Mountain West have filed a joint motion to stay the poaching penalty case as they discuss possible mediation. The hearing on MW’s motion to dismiss is set for March 25. A statement from the Pac-12: “To safeguard the well-being and interests of our student-athletes, on September 24, 2024, the Pac-12 Conference initiated legal action against the Mountain West Conference for imposing unlawful ‘Poaching Penalties’ on the conference. Today, at the request of the Mountain West Conference, the Pac-12 has agreed to file a mutual 60-day order to stay in the case to discuss mediation options. It is important to state that we are in the early stages; no mediation dates have been set, and mediation is still uncertain. The Pac-12 remains confident in our position that the Poaching Penalty will be declared invalid and is committed to defending our stance.” (link)

More feedback from the machine that is college football as The Athletic’s Ralph Russo & Stewart Mandel write on the potential implementation of buyout fees for student-athletes who ink deals at a school, then later enter the transfer portal. Notably: “One Big 12 school required the athlete to pay a buyout equal to 50 percent of his remaining compensation if he transferred before the end of the deal’s term. An ACC school required the athlete to pay back 100 percent of his earnings if he transferred before Jan. 31, 2026. One Big Ten player’s contract, based on a suggested template the conference sent to all of its members, requires the athlete to pay liquidated damages in the event he transfers. Another defers two-thirds of the athlete’s payments for the coming season until the end of January — after the winter portal window closes.” Industry attorney Mit Winter: “It’s basically a carbon copy of what happens with coaches. They all have employment contracts that say, ‘You can’t coach anywhere else, but if you want to break the contract, here’s what you have to pay.’ And it’s almost always the new school that pays the buyout.” Per an unnamed Big 12 GM: “Theoretically, this kid isn’t getting paid to play still, so when push comes to shove, if it gets litigated, you’re not going to win that. Now, I see the advantage of potentially using it as a scare tactic to keep players. They don’t know better. But the second any agent gets involved, they’ll just bypass it.” More. (link)

The New York Times’ Corey Kilgannon profiles St. John’s megadonor & Vitaminwater/BODYARMOR founder Mike Repole in conjunction with the rise of Red Storm Men’s Basketball under Rick Pitino with today’s Big East Tournament title on the line against Creighton. Pitino on what he told St. John’s officials when interviewing for the job: “I think you guys would be missing out on a tremendous asset. He was going to be 50 percent of our N.I.L. money. Without Mike Repole, we did not have the funds to do what we wanted.” Repole on reuniting with his alma mater: “It’s been missing for 25 years, and now to have it all back is pretty magical. [...] I’ll always be Mike from Queens. It’s actually a dream, 40 years later.” (link)

Bridgeforth Stadium is one of many athletic facilities on James Madison’s list for an enhancement or replacement. Though long discussed, it appears talks are escalating and not only will the renovated venue have more seats, it will have more premium and luxury options as well. Dukes’ AD Matt Roan: “What I can’t speak to is how important it was (before taking the AD job). To me, since Day 1, the stadium, yes it allows more people in, but I think it’s the introduction of more premium spaces that allows you to pay for the stadium, but also reinvest dollars to make sure we have a broad based athletic department. The stadium, for us, has the potential to make that program better, but also the experience of 17 others because of the premium spaces and what that does for our revenue.” JMU has sold out football season tickets each of the last two seasons and Roan adds: “Every season that we have, we have the opportunity to put demand fully on display. If you really want to get this done, it would be really, really nice if you were turning people away all the time. I think with the home schedule that we have, historic and challenging, we have an incredible opportunity ahead of us to sell out a season. I’m really optimistic and hopeful that we will do just that because I think that does suggest we need more premium seats, more student seats. By showing that demand you make that project all the more palatable than it already is.” (link)

UC Davis’ Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Stadium has undergone several upgrades, headlined by the recent installation of stadium lights. Staples Construction contracted the work that includes eight 80-foot poles at the baseball field and four 100-foot poles at the soccer field, providing NCAA competition-level lighting for both venues. Sportico’s Daniel Libit takes a look back at the FBI probe into college basketball, which he submits is now “widely regarded as a case of prosecutorial overreach that fell short of its hype.” Former Asst. U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Robert Boone, now an attorney with WilmerHale, was one of the government’s key prosecutors in the case and acknowledges to Libit: “I totally get the perception that it was going to be something bigger, and it wasn’t. And I don’t think that’s necessarily an unfair read.” That said, Boone believes it was a necessary first step in spurring changes in the industry: “I think the involvement of federal authorities was a bigger shock to the system than any previous attempts at reform. Combined with the timing and the growing money in college sports, it was reaching a tipping point that ultimately pushed the issue over the edge.” As for investigation’s focus into then-Louisville/now St. John’s HC Rick Pitino, Boone tells Libit: “I don’t think it was accurate to say Pitino was the focus,” but he adds: “You always want to get who you think is most responsible for directing the misconduct.” Boone emphasizes that prosecutors were “very conscious” of the public debate regarding paying student-athletes at the time and explains the feds were “not interested in trying to criminalize the mere payment of money going to a player, in and of itself. … If the goal is to shine a light on areas of corruption—or areas vulnerable to it—and get people thinking about why that is, whether it should be…then I’d like to think I played a part. How change happens is up to those in the space, but I think it was a piece of the puzzle.” (link)

NCAA VP of Women’s Basketball Lynn Holzman joins the Navigating Sports Business podcast and talks about how the 2021 championship was a turning point because “frankly, a lot of the things that became visible during that time, and then that resulting in the gender equity report of which then we've seen a lot of additional resource investment into women's basketball. And what I'm proud about with that is just the way all that was managed and how we have been able to really embrace those opportunities for the betterment of women’s basketball and women’s sports overall because it became very clear that what we were experiencing during that time, we were going to be front-of-the-line leaders in the sense of this momentous movement around women's sports. And although the path by which we got there for that to be a trigger point may not have been what some people would have chosen, we've certainly seen the benefits of the additional resource investment and visibility of women's sports and women's basketball.” While an element of pageantry is built into March Madness, Holzman remains about the games. “We’ve seen from this regular season, which was certainly a carry-through and even a higher elevation than last year, [is] just the competitive depth, the parity has increased in women's basketball – the skills and the athleticism on the court, the storylines around such a great collection of players and programs and coaches and everything. I'm excited about the games. All those other things are really important, of course, as well, but when it’s all said and done, it’s about the game that’s played on the court.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown shares more context for his reporting that several schools are seriously considering reclassifying out of Division I, noting that in addition to rising costs, the House settlement and a looming enrollment cliff, “the federal government is slashing a lot of money. You’ve probably already heard of the potentially massive cuts coming from the National Institutes of Health, cuts that represent more than $60M in lost revenue for many large research institutions. But between other cuts for agricultural research, DOE research, defense research and others, virtually every university is looking at playing defense. Schools across the country are establishing hiring freezes, and what-if scenarios are being planned out in case additional cuts are coming. These aren’t just problems for the Harvards and Stanfords of the world. Almost everybody has some level of potential risk exposure.” In an effort to increase revenue, Brown notes several schools are reassessing their stadium seating to add more premium options even if it means reducing capacity. “There’s something to the idea of smaller, but deeper stadium experiences being better business. Last fall, folks at Northwestern told me they were very confident that the temporary lakefront football field would generate more gameday revenue than old Ryan Field, even though the temporary lakefront stadium doesn’t even have half the capacity of their old stadium…thanks to better premium seating (and the ability to sell alcohol). There’s a reason new stadium builds at places like San Diego State and Colorado State aren’t 75,000 seat behemoths, either.” (link)

After spending roughly $12M via its collective on last year’s football roster, LSU has ramped up efforts over the offseason, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who explains the “fundraising blitzkrieg, starting with [a] phone call out West, featured presentations to donors of the program’s new, NFL-like roster valuation system. Kelly, himself, made visits to Baton Rouge offices of business owners and pledged to match up to $1M in LSU NIL contributions with a donation to the school’s athletics fund.” The phone call Dellenger references was to [Thoma Bravo Managing Partner] Holden Spaht, a “Harvard Business School graduate, Baton Rouge native and a mostly unknown figure who has worked in the shadows for years, with a small handful of others, to fund LSU football’s [NIL] efforts. … The result? Multiple seven-figure gifts arrived. It was a last gasp to cap off the industry’s four-year NIL era of boosters funding rosters before” the House settlement. “The cash flow — a majority of it from three to five donors — helped deliver a 16-man, top-ranked transfer portal class in the country, retain stars like edge rusher Harold Perkins, land a top-10 ranked group of high school signees and, perhaps, avoid a cataclysmic and historic happening: LSU, of all programs, being left behind.” LSU is one of several schools angling to take advantage of the pre-House landscape, as Dellenger points out “some programs are frontloading as much as $16M.” In fact, LSU Football HC Brian Kelly acknowledged to Dellenger that “we are frontloading at a level where we are trying to get to or above $13M.” As for the “NFL-like roster valuation system,” Kelly explains it’s based on playing time and experience: “You start with your initial capital outlay at key positions: quarterback, cornerback, defensive end. You can track a freshman who is going to be your third stringer. Well, he’s only getting $125K or $85K. So if he’s getting offered $1M to transfer, there’s nothing to talk about. If Miami wants to give our third-stringer $1M, good luck to them.” Tigers AD Scott Woodward adds: “It’s about discipline. If you deviate from your plan, you sink your ship.” Lots more. (link)

CBS’ Dennis Dodd explains there are at least two models the Big 12 could use to determine who receives its College Football Playoff AQs: First, the top four regular-season teams qualify with the No. 1 seed playing the No. 4 seed and No. 2 playing No. 3. The two winners on that championship weekend in December would advance to the CFP. Or the 16-team league could split into two divisions. One possibility involves the two first-place teams in each division qualifying along with the teams with the next two best records. “In both play-in structures, there is no outright conference champion. In one iteration, the two winners would be declared co-champs. In another, a team with the best record could be declared the ‘regular-season’ champion. But that gets complicated, and the Big 12 has had its share of complicated.” Dodd notes this would be different than the 2014 scenario involving TCU and Baylor, pointing out that “if everybody is OK with co-champs -- and they might be given the benefits (a CFP spot) -- the Big 12 would be adding an extra postseason game. That would probably take some sort of rule change from the NCAA, but given the current landscape that's seemingly changing by the day, the association likely wouldn't stand in the way. … The Big 12, along with the other conferences, also would have to go back to their rightsholders and ask for more money for the additional games. The biggest hurdle remains getting AQs instituted in the first place. While [Big 12 Commissioner Brett] Yormark has straddled the fence, ACC commissioner Jim Phillips has been adamantly against the proposal.” (link)

Sony has filed a lawsuit against USC over its use of songs by Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Mariah Carey and other musicians on social media. Sportico’s Michael McCann observes the suit is “the latest in what has become a pattern of sports-related litigation involving the use of songs in social media posts. Last year, 14 NBA teams and nine AHL teams were sued by license holders of popular songs used in teams’ social media posts that celebrate athletes. Sony’s complaint emphasizes the “substantial money, time [and] effort” invested in cultivating relationships with artists and distributing their music and notes how it “invests on the front end of an artist’s career” in the form of advances, recording and marketing. The company maintains its incentives to invest in artists “flow directly from the protections afforded by copyright laws,” since Sony earns revenues from licensing songs – including for use in social media posts. Sony also argues USC has “repeatedly failed” to obtain licenses from Sony even though the school’s “Brand and Identity Guidelines” for video and other imagery acknowledges licenses are necessary. USC maintains that it “respects the intellectual property rights of others” and says it will “respond to these allegations in court.” (link)

Texas golf student-athlete Luke Potter has apologized after he reportedly was removed from the grounds at TPC Sawgrass earlier this week for heckling Rory McIlroy. Video of the incident, which occurred during a practice round, made the rounds this week and appears to show McIlRoy hit a drive on the 18th hole into the water then immediately turn back, walk over to Potter, ask for his cellphone, take it and walk away. Potter tells Golf.com: “Look, I just made a mistake, and I take ownership for it. I apologize for it. That's about all that needs to be said. ... It's just a good learning experience. Yeah, I apologize." Longhorns HC John Fields adds: "He's got a hole in his heart. He had no idea that what was coming out of his mouth was going to result in this fashion. With regards to our University of Texas program, I mean it's an embarrassing moment. It is particularly sensitive to me because our program is built on respect for the game, and I would tell you that we coach 18- to 22-year-olds on a normal basis and they don't always make the right call, and that's my responsibility as a coach, and when they do make a mistake, it's a learning moment.” According to Golf.com, Potter referenced the 2011 Masters, when McIlroy melted down on the back nine Sunday and shot an 80. The number of students applying to college rose 4% this admission cycle, and applicants submitted 6% more applications overall, according to a new report from the Common App. Inside Higher Ed’s Liam Knox notes the uptick was “fueled by an especially large spike in the number of underrepresented minority applicants, which rose by 12% compared to non-URM applicants’ 2% increase. In addition, applicants from families below the median income level rose 8%, compared to 3% from above the median.” Meanwhile, “domestic applicant growth exceeded that of international students for the first time since 2019. Domestic applicants increased by 5% while the number of international applicants declined by 1%. In addition, the number of applicants submitting test scores in 2024-25 grew by 11%, outpacing nonreporters for the first time since 2021.” (link)
