Will the Pac-12 follow the American’s lead & require schools to commit to a minimum spend on revenue sharing? Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner: “That has not been clarified for us yet. [...] We have had conversations lately about the importance of setting benchmarks before we invite new members. It’s possible to leave it to the institutions, but there’s a shared commitment to success. What everybody does (with resources) affects the other members. If you don’t do what it takes to be successful, it can bring the other members down. [...] We have a chance to reshape our future because of the blank slate next summer. My vision is to make something that addresses the modern student athlete and the current climate.” (link)

VCU AD Ed McLaughlin talks about the House settlement & revenue sharing: “As a capitalist, I'm not quite sure we should ever restrict anything like that. We're certainly not restricting coaches. So I don't know why we'd hold the kids to a higher standard than we do the adults. [...] There's nothing more visible in your campus than your athletic department. That's just reality and there's no really debate about that. Now for us to be competitive nationally and to still be that national brand that we are, we have to opt into the House settlement, you know, revenue sharing with student athletes going forward, which is the foundation of the House settlement. That is the way to stay competitive. [...] How do we make sure that we can be a Top 25 basketball program on men's and women's? Understanding where the market was going to be, we made the decision that it was going to cost us about $5 million to do this.” (link)

Washington’s FY24 ended with $190.94M in operating revenues against $200.15M in operating expenses, leading to a $9.21M net loss. Nuggets from the Seattle Times’ Andy Yamashita: “UW made $34.79 million in ticket sales during FY24, $7 million more than it did during FY23. Football accounted for $31.02 million. [...] Washington generated $44.26 million through media-rights revenue and distributions from the NCAA and Pac-12 — around $5 million more than during FY23. Finally, the Huskies received $41.62 million in contributions ($28M+ specifically for football). [...] UW paid its coaches $35.55 million during FY24 [...] Football went from spending $13.44 million on its coaching staff during FY23 to $18.9 million in FY24, while giving (former football HC Kalen) DeBoer’s staff $1.92 million in bonuses for Washington’s football performance. UW also paid more than $4 million in severance to (former Men’s Basketball HC Mike) Hopkins, his staff and several football staffers following DeBoer’s departure. Support staff salaries also increased $7.78 million from FY23. [...] UW also paid $14 million in realignment expenses during FY24, although it isn’t counted as an operational expense.” Washington has two $10M loans, one from Fox Sports & one from the Big Ten, that are interest-free & will be paid back by future earnings, plus its internal lending line from the university sits at $244M from renovations to Husky Stadium & Husky Ballpark. Clemson’s football ticket prices are increasing by $7 to $15 per game depending on the seat location, a decision it says was “benchmarked…nationally and based it upon previous ticket prices, sales, secondary market and peer review.” The Tigers will still play a spring game, but it won’t be broadcast live on any platform & will instead be part of an hour-long special that airs later on the ACC Network & Clemson+. A leak in the roof at the Von Braun Center’s Propst Arena in Huntsville delayed the Conference USA men’s basketball championship game between Jacksonville State and Liberty for an hour and six minutes last night. Event staff eventually were able to go to the catwalk to string tarps under the compromised section of the roof to prevent the water from reaching the court. Have a look at the pictures. (link)

USA Today’s Mark Giannotto examines the efficacy of the seven metrics used by the selection committee to populate and seed the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament bracket. He first notes the NET, KenPom, BPI and Torvik ratings are considered predictive rankings, while ESPN’s strength of record, the Kevin Pauga Index (KPI) and wins above bubble (WAB) are results-based rankings. ESPN Director of Analytics Matt Morris notes most of the formulas are “pretty similar” but refers to the NET as “inferior” because it doesn’t include scoring margin. “If you wanted to use one of the metrics to make money in Vegas, you would not use the NET rating. Just to be blunt. It’s way better than RPI was, but it still misses out on some storylines.” As for what metric may be the best, Ken Pomeroy, Bart Torvik and NCAA Director of Media Coordination and Statistics David Worlock all independently brought up Seth Burn, whose WAB was approved by the NCAA Tournament selection committee for the first time this year. Giannotto: “Some believe it could help solve this convoluted conversation that has accompanied the growing acceptance of statistical formulas.” However, Giannotto notes that Burn “stopped working as an accountant 10 years ago because he was so successful at betting on the NFL and college basketball. He’s a self-described math nerd who once used Pomeroy’s website to ‘crush over/unders’ and realized he was ‘good at analyzing data and generating better projections than are publicly available.’” Pomeroy believes there should be just one metric to fill out the tourney field; however, neither he nor Burn are sure what the NCAA will do. Burn: “We’re going to know if they pick a team in the tournament ahead of a team from their very own metric that has a better resume. If they do that, that’s going to be the tricky thing for them to explain. If they don’t do it, then we’ve achieved victory. Then WAB has won. That’s what I’m hoping for.” (link)

Athletics Admin’s KC Smurthwaite tells MWCConnection’s Mike Wittmann he doesn’t expect any major realignment news concerning the Pac-12 and Mountain West until after March Madness. “Conferences and schools use that time for networking, coaching interviews, and strategic planning, so realignment talks tend to stay quiet until after the tournament. That said, I expect more concrete developments by mid-to-late spring. … At this point, realignment is more about content than context. Networks care more about filling valuable TV windows than which schools are playing. While adding the right schools matters, the core value is already there.” Smurthwaite doesn’t see the “Pac-12 reaching $20M per school in media payouts, but even doubling or tripling their previous revenue is a win. I also expect the Mountain West’s next TV deal to grow – media rights don’t trend backward. They’re well-positioned for an increase with limited schools in their time zone.” Smurthwaite also notes there has been a “lot of social media buzz about UNLV, but the reality is that nothing is in motion. Unless their new president makes a push, a move isn’t happening. Financially, they’re not in the best shape. … That said, UNLV remains a long-term target for the Big 12. If the Big 12 expands again in the next five years, UNLV is in the mix, in fact, a top-three target. They don’t need Pac-12 money to make that jump. They can dominate a rebuilt Mountain West, with the conference HQ to Vegas (which was part of the expansion deal), and collect a nice payout while setting themselves up for the next move.” With “massive cuts” on the horizon for higher ed and money “booming in sports,” Smurthwaite predicts there will be a “breakaway driven by private equity or a major player launching a new league outside the NCAA’s umbrella. We’re already seeing hints of this, like U.S. Soccer’s move to create a new league separate from the NCAA. And that won’t be the last sport to make that shift. Let’s just say… hockey conversations are gaining traction, too.” Lots more. (link)

Playfly has released its latest FanScore report, Modernizing the Business of College Sports, which offers insights that show why athletic departments that adopt an “enterprise mindset” will outpace their peers. The report finds that both short- and long-term success requires athletic departments to craft robust sales infrastructures and organizational structures, build advanced data and insights units, maximize sponsorship revenue, revisit ticketing and premium innovations, undertake a full review of facilities and real estate opportunities and more. The “Athletics Enterprise” also needs to adopt a media company mindset while “exercising core media expertise” in the areas of digital and social media, innovation and technology, expanding IP and ownership assets, NIL monetization support, and data acquisition and activation. Playfly President Christy Hedgpeth: “Because college athletics has experienced such profound change, the leaders who fully embrace an enterprise mindset are best positioned for the future. Increasingly, commercial success will translate to competitive success. As business strategists and revenue maximizers, our reason for being is to provide forward-leaning strategies and deliver outsized results to help our partners thrive in this new era. Our latest FanScore report provides a window into how we think about and approach this dynamic space.” (link, link – full report)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey believes it would be “justified” for his league to get 14 bids to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament: “It's a unicorn league right now. We're not going to change our name, but we stand alone historically. And I think that'll be rewarded.” More, as Sankey reiterates the strength & depth of the conference: “You got somebody that's got a nice NET [ranking], but one Quad 1 win. LSU has two Quad 1 wins, for goodness' sake. We went 30-4 against the ACC. Put their high-end teams in our league, and they're in a very different place. You do that with the Big 12, they're in a very different place. [...] I hope our coaches are proud. I hope our athletics directors are proud. We had a great visit with our presidents and chancellors, where I went through some graphics of where we were from 2006 to 2015 and then 2016 and beyond. And it's been building, and it'd be nice to kick the door down, as they say.” (link)

Arizona AD Desiree Reed-Francois reflects on her first year in Tucson, says she “hates” having to implement a “competitive fee” as part of budget & competition pressures, “it was just one way for us to be able to be competitive in this new era.” Additional nuggets: “Change is not easy. But the entire country is going through this change, and it's essential. Throughout this transformation, we've remained focused on our North Star, which is supporting our student-athletes in their academic pursuits and their drive for excellence in competition. We're making meaningful progress and positioning Arizona Athletics for the future. ... We're going to emerge stronger, we're going to be more competitive and we're going to be ready to thrive. [...] This is a people business, and the people drive the culture. ... We talk about ‘high, low, high.’ We have people that are high character. Character for us is defined as selfless, smart, hardworking. Low ego. High outcome and energy.” Reed-Francois goes on to note the Wildcats’ renegotiated deal with Nike will save $2.5M annually, the new Arizona Sports Enterprises is 98% to goal with 16% more in “contract-negotiation phase” & on the topic of revenue share percentages by sport, “I'm not going to give away our trade secrets.” (link)

Wake Forest AD John Currie joins Next Up with Adam Breneman to discuss the sweeping changes in the industry and says what “this world needs is not another AD complaining. … You have to accept the fact that you cannot control the outcome. What you can control every day is ‘am I doing the best I possibly can?’” Currie also talks about his process for hiring coaches, lessons from previous AD stops, the future of the ACC, private equity and more. Currie acknowledges the ACC “does not have the same media rights value that the SEC and the Big Ten does. Candidly, Wake Forest doesn't have the same stadium size as Clemson or Florida State, but we beat Florida State three out of the last four years in football, and we won a national championship in golf two years ago and we're competing in everything. The scale at which we operate is such that we can operate efficiently and we can truly provide a world-class student-athlete experience.” When engaging with fans and donors, Currie points out that a vast majority are unaware of the recent developments in the industry, so it’s incumbent on the Deacs to inform them. “It’s a roadshow. We’ve got a bunch of slides, we go out, we sit with groups of 15 or 20 lead donors, lead individuals, and we explain it. … The best successes for me in my career have been when we've been able to have the time to be transparent and share information and talk about problems because that has built the moments of trust. And with trust comes investment, and with investment can come success, and then you get success and you get happy and you can go back and get more investment and do even more, just like businesses do with growing customers. So that's been really a key part of what we do, but it comes back to the fact that most people have no idea what we're talking about.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner reports the Pac-12 and Mountain West have filed a joint motion to stay the poaching penalty case as they discuss possible mediation. The hearing on MW’s motion to dismiss is set for March 25. A statement from the Pac-12: “To safeguard the well-being and interests of our student-athletes, on September 24, 2024, the Pac-12 Conference initiated legal action against the Mountain West Conference for imposing unlawful ‘Poaching Penalties’ on the conference. Today, at the request of the Mountain West Conference, the Pac-12 has agreed to file a mutual 60-day order to stay in the case to discuss mediation options. It is important to state that we are in the early stages; no mediation dates have been set, and mediation is still uncertain. The Pac-12 remains confident in our position that the Poaching Penalty will be declared invalid and is committed to defending our stance.” (link)

More feedback from the machine that is college football as The Athletic’s Ralph Russo & Stewart Mandel write on the potential implementation of buyout fees for student-athletes who ink deals at a school, then later enter the transfer portal. Notably: “One Big 12 school required the athlete to pay a buyout equal to 50 percent of his remaining compensation if he transferred before the end of the deal’s term. An ACC school required the athlete to pay back 100 percent of his earnings if he transferred before Jan. 31, 2026. One Big Ten player’s contract, based on a suggested template the conference sent to all of its members, requires the athlete to pay liquidated damages in the event he transfers. Another defers two-thirds of the athlete’s payments for the coming season until the end of January — after the winter portal window closes.” Industry attorney Mit Winter: “It’s basically a carbon copy of what happens with coaches. They all have employment contracts that say, ‘You can’t coach anywhere else, but if you want to break the contract, here’s what you have to pay.’ And it’s almost always the new school that pays the buyout.” Per an unnamed Big 12 GM: “Theoretically, this kid isn’t getting paid to play still, so when push comes to shove, if it gets litigated, you’re not going to win that. Now, I see the advantage of potentially using it as a scare tactic to keep players. They don’t know better. But the second any agent gets involved, they’ll just bypass it.” More. (link)

The New York Times’ Corey Kilgannon profiles St. John’s megadonor & Vitaminwater/BODYARMOR founder Mike Repole in conjunction with the rise of Red Storm Men’s Basketball under Rick Pitino with today’s Big East Tournament title on the line against Creighton. Pitino on what he told St. John’s officials when interviewing for the job: “I think you guys would be missing out on a tremendous asset. He was going to be 50 percent of our N.I.L. money. Without Mike Repole, we did not have the funds to do what we wanted.” Repole on reuniting with his alma mater: “It’s been missing for 25 years, and now to have it all back is pretty magical. [...] I’ll always be Mike from Queens. It’s actually a dream, 40 years later.” (link)

Bridgeforth Stadium is one of many athletic facilities on James Madison’s list for an enhancement or replacement. Though long discussed, it appears talks are escalating and not only will the renovated venue have more seats, it will have more premium and luxury options as well. Dukes’ AD Matt Roan: “What I can’t speak to is how important it was (before taking the AD job). To me, since Day 1, the stadium, yes it allows more people in, but I think it’s the introduction of more premium spaces that allows you to pay for the stadium, but also reinvest dollars to make sure we have a broad based athletic department. The stadium, for us, has the potential to make that program better, but also the experience of 17 others because of the premium spaces and what that does for our revenue.” JMU has sold out football season tickets each of the last two seasons and Roan adds: “Every season that we have, we have the opportunity to put demand fully on display. If you really want to get this done, it would be really, really nice if you were turning people away all the time. I think with the home schedule that we have, historic and challenging, we have an incredible opportunity ahead of us to sell out a season. I’m really optimistic and hopeful that we will do just that because I think that does suggest we need more premium seats, more student seats. By showing that demand you make that project all the more palatable than it already is.” (link)

UC Davis’ Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Stadium has undergone several upgrades, headlined by the recent installation of stadium lights. Staples Construction contracted the work that includes eight 80-foot poles at the baseball field and four 100-foot poles at the soccer field, providing NCAA competition-level lighting for both venues. Sportico’s Daniel Libit takes a look back at the FBI probe into college basketball, which he submits is now “widely regarded as a case of prosecutorial overreach that fell short of its hype.” Former Asst. U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Robert Boone, now an attorney with WilmerHale, was one of the government’s key prosecutors in the case and acknowledges to Libit: “I totally get the perception that it was going to be something bigger, and it wasn’t. And I don’t think that’s necessarily an unfair read.” That said, Boone believes it was a necessary first step in spurring changes in the industry: “I think the involvement of federal authorities was a bigger shock to the system than any previous attempts at reform. Combined with the timing and the growing money in college sports, it was reaching a tipping point that ultimately pushed the issue over the edge.” As for investigation’s focus into then-Louisville/now St. John’s HC Rick Pitino, Boone tells Libit: “I don’t think it was accurate to say Pitino was the focus,” but he adds: “You always want to get who you think is most responsible for directing the misconduct.” Boone emphasizes that prosecutors were “very conscious” of the public debate regarding paying student-athletes at the time and explains the feds were “not interested in trying to criminalize the mere payment of money going to a player, in and of itself. … If the goal is to shine a light on areas of corruption—or areas vulnerable to it—and get people thinking about why that is, whether it should be…then I’d like to think I played a part. How change happens is up to those in the space, but I think it was a piece of the puzzle.” (link)
