WCC Commissioner Stu Jackson met with the media as part of his league’s post-season Men’s & Women’s Basketball Tournaments, starts by indicating the events will return to Orleans Arena in Las Vegas next year, adds: “Beyond that, we will continue to talk with the Orleans Arena as well as go through discovery and discussions with potentially other arenas. I can tell you we are very happy here.” As for where conference expansion possibilities stand: “Those discussions are only ongoing every day. It is no secret that in this collegiate landscape in realignment, it is like a food chain. As one conference loses a member, or a few, that conference, it is incumbent upon them, they have to go get new members and we are no different. Certainly, we have said publicly before that our presidents are committed to continue to expand this conference upwards to an additional one or three members. There is no timetable on that, but we are committed in doing so. [...] I’d love to get to 12, but I don’t want to imply that we would go out and get three all at once. I think it's important for the WCC that we be very strategic about who we add.” On the potential for scheduling alliances with other conferences: “I will tell you there have been discussions with other conferences. It’s my own personal view, getting those scheduling alliances in basketball and for the WCC along with others like ours, is the only vehicle we have to stabilize in realignment. Otherwise, we are going to continue in this world of adding and losing members. The advantage that a scheduling alliance affords you is, without actually merging, it affords you the ability to strengthen schedules, strengthen resumes, and enhance each other's ability to access the NCAA Tournament. While it’s something that I’d like to do, I have to think it is something that other conferences have to be entertaining that type of structure given the environment we are in.” Jackson goes on to detail two key areas of focus for the league: 1) Better storytelling to “tell people nationally our story and understand our strength and value of this conference”; and, 2) “...we’ve got to understand what our scheduling is going to look like and what our media rights are going to be in one to two years with Gonzaga departing, which is a major loss for us, and what our media rights will look like.” (link)

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips was on the ACC Network’s Nothing But Net from the Men’s Basketball Tournament in Charlotte yesterday, points to NC State’s run to the Final Four last year of evidence of how the league prepares squads for March Madness: “I think (North) Carolina is an NCAA Tournament team. They have 20 wins. They’ve played a Top 10 schedule. They’ve won six of their last seven and their only loss is to number one Duke.” Phillips goes on to rattle off high points for Wake Forest & SMU, as well, then continues: “The history of the league is the history of the league. We’ve won three of the last nine championships, we’ve had four different Final Four teams the last three years, we’re 33-15 the last three years. Those are the best numbers in the country. So it isn’t about whether our teams can do well in the NCAA Tournament, it’s a matter of being selected.” (link)

The latest from JohnCanzano.com’s namesake on the Pac-12’s potential next move: “The five schools that departed the Mountain West for the Pac-12 were delicate and calculated with their exit. I’m told by multiple sources that there was some concern — albeit overstated, in hindsight — that UNLV would have to consult with the Nevada Board of Regents to make the move and be separated from Nevada. The departing members probably figured they were about to destabilize the MW and could probably circle back and pick up the Rebels later. I’m also told by a source that the campus leadership at UNLV did not have the same appetite for risk that Boise State, San Diego State, Fresno State, Colorado State, and Utah State had. Remember, those five schools ran to the Pac-12 based on media projections from the league’s consultants, and not an actual deal, in hand. Let’s see if UNLV is more interested when the Pac-12 has a deal in hand.” (link)

Illinois State President Aondover Tarhule on AD Jeri Beggs, from whom he removed the interim tag last week: “She is a strong relationship builder that has helped develop a cohesive team of staff and coaches, a strong community of donors and an engaged and growing Redbird fan base to support our student-athletes.” At Beggs’ official introductory press conference yesterday, Tarhule added: “She has my full confidence in helping us elevate not only our athletic programs, but more importantly, what I believe is the main driver for success—a strong student-athletic experience.” Men’s Basketball HC Ryan Pedon on Beggs: “It could have gone a different direction. There’s a lot of question marks at a certain level and she stabilized and solidified [the department] and she’s reaping the benefits of that day. It’s been awesome to watch that play out.” Women’s Basketball HC Kristen Gillespie also sings Beggs’ praises “[Student-athletes] know how much she cares about them. Ultimately, we are here for them and their experience and I think she is great example of always putting their needs and their experience first and foremost.” Beggs, who had just put in her retirement papers to the university from her role as a marketing professor when Tarhule asked her to fill the interim role: “I really hadn’t planned to quit working completely, I thought I just needed a new challenge. I never imagined this would be the new challenge. … My vision has been to win championships, graduate student-athletes and be the best campus and community partner we can possibly be, and that will not change. The only thing that’s really changed is I need a new set of business cards.” (link, link, link)

Bowling Green AD Derek van der Merwe talks to The Blade’s Michael Burwell about the non-stop nature of leading an athletic department on the heels of hiring new Football HC Eddie George: “I would say that the inspiration outpaces the exhaustion at this point. I think when you go through these processes, you truly are inspired by how something makes you better. If you look at what we’ve done this spring with our softball coach [Michelle Gardner], taking Oklahoma to [extra innings], a four-time national champion. I think of our gymnastics coach [Brittney Emmons] and that scoring differential is getting closer and closer, our swim coach [Tanner Barton] digging us out of last place and competing in the championship. Our track and field, all these pieces inspire me. I look at everything that we’ve done. If it makes us better, that inspiration always outpaces the exhaustion. It’s when you lose that inspiration and that vision, I think, is when you’re in trouble, and I’m not there. I’m ready for us to continue to get better.” (link)

Extra Points purveyor Matt Brown: “Hearing from multiple industry people I trust that several D1 schools are having SERIOUS internal talks about reclassifying out of D1 before July/House. I’d be a little surprised if nobody ends up doing it this year. Budget cuts may force some hands. Not sure what schools end up going through with it or not…nobody wants to be first. And to be fair, some of these situations are more about the SCHOOL being in very rough shape than just House/Rev Share/athletic expenses. Not much you can do in an enrollment/revenue crisis.” (link)

It may be time for Congress to determine whether NCAA rules limiting eligibility to four seasons in five years illegally restrain trade, according to Sportico’s Michael McCann, who breaks down the various ways in which the issue could play out. First, the NCAA could eliminate restrictions on how long student-athletes can compete. “Given that universities offer numerous degree programs, it’s conceivable for a student to remain enrolled at a university for many years and past the point at which their bodies lose a step or two on account of aging and wear-and-tear. The NCAA could go even further by lifting a requirement that the student be full-time. … But this possibility is unrealistic. The college sports brand could take a hit if too many late-twentysomething and early-thirtysomething athletes occupy roster slots that would otherwise go to 18- and 19-year olds.” Second, the NCAA could litigate the issue to the end. “It’s possible the Supreme Court could surmise that NCAA eligibility rules are reasonable restrictions that relate to goals in higher ed and ought to be upheld. The danger for the NCAA with the second possibility is if it loses.” Finally, the NCAA could finally convince Congress to act. “Perhaps the NCAA would have more traction by imploring members of Congress to consider an antitrust exemption narrowly limited to athlete eligibility. … The NCAA’s ‘ask’ wouldn’t be for a far-reaching antitrust exemption or national authority over NIL. It would be to maintain basic control over the character of rosters. The NCAA could also assert there is confusion with conflicting court rulings in regard to eligibility. Congress could end that confusion by exempting the NCAA from antitrust lawsuits over eligibility.” (link)

A new report by TV marketing firm EDO found that TV advertisers spent $244M on women’s sports in 2024, a year-over-year increase of 139%, which corresponded with a 131% YOY increase in women’s sports TV viewership. Basketball, soccer and tennis were among the top sports for ad engagement. EDO SVP/Head of Client Solutions Laura Grover: “What really jumped out to me is that a lot of the brands that are really seeing gains are ones that have had a very minimal presence on TV in the past. They’re leaning into these new opportunities in women’s sports, and they’re really paying off.” More context from CNBC’s Russell Leung: “The top-spending industries on women’s sports in 2024 were autos, pharmaceuticals, internet and telecommunications, financial services, and insurance, according to the report. The highest-spending brands were State Farm, AT&T, Allstate, Nike and AbbVie’s Skyrizi, while the most effective brands for engagement were Skims, Poppi, Oura, Fabletics and Bombas. Overall, the most engaging women’s sports events for advertisers were college lacrosse (25% more effective than the average 2024 women’s sports program), the U.S. Open semifinals and finals (20% more effective), the NCAA Tournament for basketball (19% more effective), college gymnastics and the WNBA Finals (both 18% more effective than the overall category). … ads during the 2024 women’s NCAA Tournament were 18% more effective than the average primetime ad.” (link)

The Department of Education has laid off nearly half its workforce, impacting 1,300 people, per The Chronicle of Higher Ed. Notably: “The department did not detail how many employees from each division were losing their jobs, but said that all units — including Federal Student Aid and the Office for Civil Rights — would be affected, and that the ‘reduction in force’ will require some areas to undergo a ‘significant reorganization.’ [...] At the same time, the department will ‘continue to deliver on all statutory programs that fall under the agency’s purview, including formula funding, student loans, Pell Grants, funding for special needs students, and competitive grantmaking.’” Lots more. Count Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark among those in support of expanding March Madness. Yormark: “I’m in favor of expansion to 76. I think that’s the right number. I think the economics, candidly, have to work. CBS and TNT have a marquee asset with the tournament. I know they know that, but in order for us to expand, they have to come to the table and provide the right economics.” CBS Sports President/CEO David Berson signals a more cautionary approach to expanding the marquee event: “No one wants to do anything that’s going to negatively impact the tournament, and that’s where the focus is.” TNT Sports Chairman/CEO Luis Silberwasser adds: “If it’s something that makes sense for the fans and the tournament we’ll be supportive.” (link); During an on-air discussion on the much-talked about new court at this year’s Phillips 66 Big 12 Basketball Championships, Yormark noted: “The other night, my son sent me a tweet that was on Barstool and it said ‘the Big 12 women are playing on a Louis Vuitton bag.’ Candidly, that’s all I needed to read. That was exactly what we were looking for. I was teasing everyone that this was our Gucci pattern, but I’m excited about it. In fact, there are a lot of brand extensions off of this court. Think about branded luggage with the XII. Think about hoodies and things of that nature. This is just the beginning. We’re all about the XII and think we really highlighted it this weekend.” (link); The Big 12 also announced on Tuesday that it will move from 20 to 18 conference games next season, with VP of Men’s Basketball Brian Thornton commenting: “One of the biggest impetuses for that is just the balance of conference versus non-conference games. It’s extremely important, because of the competitive nature of our conference, for there to be some ability to have a bye built into our schedule. With the way that the schedule lays out, playing 20 games post-Christmas makes that impossible to do, so we’re going to try 18 games and we’re going to see how that goes.” (link)

Conference USA Commissioner Judy MacLeod indicates all schools in the league have chosen to opt in to the House settlement, “...so now we’re just trying to figure out the plan. There will be more benefits for student-athletes. Some people might do it in different ways, but we’re going to allow a little bit of creativity on their end to figure out what’s best for them.” AL.com’s Thomas Ashworth also reports the C-USA Men’s & Women’s Basketball Tournaments will return to Huntsville, Ala., for the 2025-26 season. Nuggets from Virginia AD Carla Williams’ letter to Cavs supporters: “Revenue sharing for football and basketball is projected at $20.5M in 2025-26. These are the same revenues that are used to fund the Olympic sports. The University has and will continue to invest in sustaining these programs and ensuring full participation in revenue sharing, however, the current model is not sustainable, and new ways must be established to bridge the financial gap. Your contributions play a critical role in navigating these financial challenges. Because of your support, we can provide our student-athletes with the resources they need to thrive—from top-tier coaching and training facilities to academic support and leadership development opportunities. While operational adjustments are necessary, our commitment to excellence remains unwavering. [...] The men’s basketball program is undergoing a pivotal transition following Coach Bennett’s retirement. Dean and Markel Families Men’s Interim Head Coach Ron Sanchez is leading the team through this period, with tremendous grace and care for the young men on our team. We are working diligently to bring the head coach search to conclusion prior to the end of the Spring Transfer Portal which is March 24 – April 22.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger & Kerryhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter had some play-by-play on today’s House Judiciary hearing on NIL & a possible NCAA antitrust exemption. Notables from Dellenger: “House Judiciary chair Jim Jordan says that SEC commissioner Greg Sankey has told him that, under an employment model, he anticipates that schools will drop to the NCAA minimum of 16 sports. Wisconsin AD Chris McIntosh replies, ‘I think that is an accurate portrayal.’ [...] House Judiciary chair Jim Jordan sorts thru the ways college athletes get compensation: (1) scholarship + benefits; (2) House rev-share; (3) market NIL; (4) booster collective NIL. Jordan: ‘It’s far from uncompensated labor. This idea of uncompensated labor is just false.’ [...] The House Judiciary subcommittee’s NIL-related hearing has ended. As so many of the others have featured, it was a debate between Republicans and Democrats mostly over the athlete employment debate and future of Olympic sports. They do not agree.” As for key notes from Winter: “It’s clear (Representative Jerrold) Nadler (D-NY) isn’t in favor of the NCAA receiving an antitrust exemption. He’s destroying the request right now, and explaining how the NCAA wants to use it to roll back progress for athletes. Another example of how an antitrust exemption is extremely unlikely. [...] I think this is the first hearing where it’s become more clear an antitrust exemption for the NCAA would, in addition to being used for compensation restrictions, be used to reimpose transfer restrictions. [...] (Representative Jamie) Raskin (D-MD) is also attacking the NCAA and the conferences. Says they want to ‘keep the athletes voiceless forever.’ Asks his colleagues not to give a repeat antitrust offender a bailout.“ (link, link)

Sixteen coaches associations, headed by NFCA CEO Carol Bruggeman, have penned a letter to the DI Board of Governors calling for immediate change regarding “inexplicably more stringent” eligibility standards for junior college student-athletes. Specific “different standards” include scholarships for the entire five years, similar to four-year transfers; a 2.5 GPA for JUCO transfers when four-year transfers need a 2.0; limits on scrimmages counting against seasons of competition; and more. The letter goes on to read: “Student-athletes should not be punished or treated adversely because they have enrolled in a two-year institution before transferring to an NCAA institution.” NJCAA President/CEO Christopher Parker tells CBS’ Dennis Dodd he has tried to connect with NCAA President Charlie Baker about enacting these changes “but we haven't received any indication of Charlie's willingness to do so collaboratively.” (link)

A group of 18 Power 4 Track & Field HC’s have joined together to draft an open letter entitled “Call to Action for Track & Field,” per Venable LLP Partner/Sports Law & NIL Attorney Philip Sheng, seeking to protect their sport’s future against consequences of the House settlement, including roster limits, budget cuts, growing program costs and program eliminations. The document is being circulated throughout the sport’s community calling for immediate action to “protect and preserve the sport,” by mobilizing, speaking out, engaging with NCAA officials, advocating for fair funding and working to create innovative solutions for access, including reinventing the sport to become more consumable and TV friendly. From the letter: “If we fail to act, the consequences will be devastating. Many young athletes, especially from underserved communities, could lose access to educational opportunities. This will harm the U.S. pipeline of athletes, diminishing our edge at the Olympic Games and World Championships. […] The future of track and field, and the future of our athletes, depend on our collective action.” (link)

The Utah legislature has passed a bill that would permit direct payments to student-athletes and clearly states that student-athletes are not employees of their institution, as part of a larger bill addressing abusive coaching practices. Pending the governor’s signature, the bill calls for all institutions to create policies to respond to abusive coaching complaints by November. Regarding compensation, the provision requiring payments to be subject to public records has been removed. The bill would also require institutions to conduct an audit of NIL spending every five years, starting in 2028, and prohibit using legislative appropriations, tuition or fees to compensate student-athletes. If signed into law, the bill would take effect May 7. (link)

As part of its postseason football review, the Big Ten will look for more balance with its Friday night inventory as the quartet of West Coast members filled 39% of those broadcast slots, per The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner. Big Ten COO Kerry Kenny: “This year brought many new and complex elements into the Big Ten’s TV process. Three full broadcast windows in fixed positions, West Coast travel that needed to be balanced, and an expanded CFP race that deepened the pool of games with a postseason impact late in the season. We worked with our media partners to evaluate the impact of the Friday night game time window when games would otherwise be televised during a busy Saturday slate of games, and we’ve appreciated the additional visibility and promotion that this creates for our student-athletes and institutions.” Wilner adds: “There’s no evidence to indicate Big Ten and Fox will eliminate the Friday night package in future seasons. If anything, it’s the ideal promotional vehicle for Fox’s showcase ‘Big Noon’ broadcast 15 hours later. […] Multiple sources at the West Coast schools acknowledged the reality of the Friday night assignments: It’s part of their complicated but lucrative existence in the Big Ten. But there is a certain level of curiosity about the distribution of Friday night assignments in future seasons and whether the Wolverines, Buckeyes and Nittany Lions will ever share in the responsibility.” (link)

The Nevada Board of Regents held a hearing last Friday to dive into the $27M budget shortfall in UNLV’s FY24 budget, which included a $5.3M influx from the university’s operating distribution pool from the Nevada System of Higher Education. With a projected annual deficit of around $27M through FY29, Regent Heather Brown: “Taking from unrestricted operating distribution in order to not increase the deficit is not a plan to not have a deficit, it’s a plan to rob Peter to pay Paul. Because UNLV is not going to have unlimited amounts of money in this other bucket … and it doesn’t look like the spending itself is going down. We’re just moving money around with the hopes that nobody … is going to ask this question and you’ve bought yourself another year until you have to present to the board again, and that’s just not fair.” Brown also questioned AD Erick Harper about how the Rebels were planning to use the distribution from fees paid by members leaving the Mountain West, to which Harper noted some dollars would go towards the shortfall, at which point the budget would be revised. The board requested for UNLV’s athletic budget report to be heard again before approving. (link)
