Yesterday on the Paul Finebaum Show, Alabama AD Byrne opened up about the change in Baseball leadership in Tuscaloosa: “So what I tried to think back is, anytime you go through a coaching hire, Paul, you try to look under the hood and get as much information as you can. As you can imagine, there was never any sign by anybody of anything like that. And once we learned about it, we dealt with it. We took it seriously from the get go and made the challenging decision. … Obviously as an athletic director, one of the things you’re judged on is your coaching hires. And as much as, using a baseball term, as much you want to bat 1.000, you’re not going to. Coach Bohannon — our program’s better. A lot better.” (link)

Wright State AD Grant on the “P.S.A (people first, student second, athlete third)” culture he’s established in Dayton: “I don’t like our business in a lot of ways. Many [athletic] programs that achieve high levels of success are not doing it the right way. They are the epitome of winning at all costs, and I don’t feel like that’s the right way to do things at all. [...] Parents have trusted us with their kids to help make a better life for them and prepare them for when they leave. That was sort of where the P.S.A. mission was born. [...] I remember thinking, if this doesn’t work, and we’re not successful, at least I can lay my head on my pillow at night and know we did it the right way. This is a business where very few people doggedly stick to their principles and core values. Ultimately, we are an athletic department, and if this doesn’t work, I’ll walk out with my pride knowing I didn’t sacrifice my principles.” Lots more on the inner workings of P.S.A. (link)

Connect/MB Sports’ Banker checks in with Huron Sports Consulting Managing Director Walsh, Huron Higher Ed Consulting Director Nevala and former Penn State AD/Huron Strategic Adviser Barbour to discuss some of the complexities facing college sports right now and what strategies they’re discussing with ADs, what resources they are able to provide to overcome some of those challenges. Some specific topics include the opportunities in women’s sports, the role of athletics when it comes to enrollment and how the Transformation Committee’s recommendations will impact Olympic sports. On the latter, Nevala says to identify the gaps and prioritize investments. One thing Huron always falls back on, he continues, is that the nature of college athletics is to create a great campus experience which hopefully leads to a level of engagement for student-athletes that become alumni. Lots more in the full interview now live on Connect. (link)

Collegiate Consulting outlines the 55-page study it provided to Western Illinois that preceded the decision for the Leathernecks to move to the OVC. “The study ascertained, WIU was in alignment to the OVC with regard to institutional fit, sports sponsorship, geography/travel and athletic financial aid. Operating budgets for the men’s program were in the top-third when compared to the OVC, however, 7-of-9 women’s programs fell below the OVC average. In addition, Collegiate Consulting compared WIU’s football expenses in the Missouri Valley Football Conference to the OVC. The study illustrated WIU’s alignment with the majority of the OVC expense metric comparisons.” (link)

The Athletic’s Ubben catches up with nine high school coaches of top football prospects in Colorado, Texas and Florida to hear their thoughts on Colorado Football HC Sanders’ approach to roster management, and McKinney (TX) High School HC Shavers says: “Deion is going to be able to do things that most coaches are not able to do and get away with saying things that most coaches may not be able to say and survive because he’s Prime. His way of doing it is unique, but it’s provoking change. They’ve done a good job of making Colorado a sought-after place.” Valor Christian (CO) HC McGatlin tells Ubben that if his son were being recruited by the Buffs, “it would be hard to send him to CU because I don’t want them to have that experience. To me, it would be a little scary.” Lakeland (FL) HC Frazier believes that “it’ll go both ways. There will be a prospect or two who it rubs the wrong way, but there will be some guys who prefer that and want that upfront communication.” Regardless, Frazier says a “Colorado offer is a big deal now to these kids. It was nothing last year. It’s a big deal now. That goes to show how great a job he’s done marketing himself.” It’s McGatlin who sums up what appears to be the general conclusion about Coach Prime’s approach and possibly his tenure in Boulder: “It’s intriguing to see. Maybe he’s onto something. Or not.” (link)

“That’s not fog. That’s a cloud of grill smoke hanging over the outfield.” ESPN’s McGee explores the culture of SEC baseball from the cowbells to the “shirtless professors reading Chaucer down the third-base line on a sunny Music City spring afternoon.” Beyond creating fun atmospheres for fans, the buzz that surrounds SEC baseball also makes the schools in-demand destinations for players, as LSU pitcher Hurd, who transferred from UCLA, explains: “The experience of these ballparks, ours here at The Box and on the road, is why I am here, plain and simple. This is no slight to where I came from and some of the amazing places I was able to visit during my time as a Bruin, but all over the nation, players are constantly talking about these SEC atmospheres.” Meanwhile, McGee points out that “there are only four purpose-built, on-campus college baseball stadiums in Division I that seat more than 10,000. All are in the SEC West. There are only nine that can hold more than 7,000 fans and all but two of those are in the SEC, with one of those — Texas's Disch-Falk Field – slated to join the conference as soon as the 2024 baseball season concludes.” Former Tennessee outfielder Gilbert, who currently plays in the Houston Astros’ organization adds: “The fans at every school, they've done the research. They know where you're from, what classes you're taking, your parents' names, all of it. You want to be angry at them, but honestly, it's more impressive than anything else." Lots more. (link)

Must Read for Marketers: The popularity of NFL schedule release videos is reaching a fever pitch, and SBJ’s Fischer contends they serve a purpose beyond entertainment. The schedule release, he argues “triggers” the several significant business activities: namely, single-game ticket sales, logistics and gambling. Regarding single-game ticket sales, Fischer explains: “This has been a major point of emphasis for NFL HQ, which has pushed teams to be more strategic and aggressive in how they price and market their remaining inventory. None of that can happen until there are dates and times set. Fans can’t evaluate options until they know how a game fits into their lives.” As it relates to logistics, he notes that an NFL team “needs to book between 150-200 hotel rooms and meeting space in eight or nine cities, often during the fall convention season and highly competitive winter holiday travel weekends. Operations teams start making calls within minutes of seeing the schedule, and prices go up with every passing day. Most operations experts hope to present a final proposal to senior leadership by the weekend and negotiate final terms next week. ‘Even at this stage, things are an elevated cost in the planning schedule,’ said one NFL team exec, who called today a ‘material’ event.” (link)

Hawai’i President Lassner has recommended LIU Senior Deputy AD Angelos for the Rainbow Warriors’ AD post. “Mr. Angelos is the best qualified at this time to lead the athletics department and continue to build upon the department’s foundation to advance Hawaii’s only NCAA Division I program during this extraordinary period of dynamic change and challenge.” Lassner has also recommended a salary of $325,212 for Angelos, the same amount as current AD Matlin. Western Illinois will exit the Summit League and MVFC and move the Leathernecks portfolio to the OVC. WIU will join the OVC starting this fall, with FB to join in 2024 after playing its final season in the MVFC this fall. Leathernecks AD Bubb: "This represents a new start, and a new era for Leatherneck Athletics against some old rivalries, as well as some new teams in our geographic footprint. When you look at the schools in the Ohio Valley Conference, you see schools which are similar in enrollment, the size of communities where they exist, the academic programs they offer and the athletic budgets each has to work with at the Division I level." The New York Post’s Marchand on the Pac-12 media rights negotiations: “One name that has been out there a lot as a possibility is Amazon. I think that’s very unlikely. I never say never about it, but from what I’m told very unlikely. … Not saying impossible, I’m saying very unlikely, at least at this point. Maybe things change, but I just don’t think there’s a match.” (link)

The DI Committee on Academics will ask the DI Council to sponsor legislation adjusting the nontraditional coursework requirements for high school students seeking to achieve NCAA eligibility. The new standard would require high schools offering nontraditional course requirements to meet criteria for validity as established by the NCAA High School Review Committee; the instructional model for a course to meet criteria for review; the curriculum to meet high school graduation requirements in one or a combination of the following areas: English, mathematics, science, social science, world language, philosophy or nondoctrinal religion; and the curriculum to meet college preparatory criteria for content and rigor. The committee also approved the waiver directive for the APR penalties and loss of access to postseason competition, and it noted concern about the potential continued impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on academic achievement, particularly among student-athletes who took advantage of the additional year of eligibility. Amidst the sports wagering investigation in Iowa, increased focus has been placed on the Hawkeyes-focused The Swarm Collective’s $500K commitment from Elite Casino Resorts earlier this year, with CEO Heinrichs telling On3’s Wittry: “But our relationship with Elite Casinos is that they’re not wanting our student-athletes to market for their casinos. They’re wanting our student-athletes to do work for charity. They’re basically paying The Swarm as a donation to try to have the student-athletes do greater good for the Eastern Iowa community. It’s not as if they’re paying the student-athletes to go and try to get people to gamble more.” (link)

New Mexico Attorney General Torrez says prosecution of the hazing/sexual assault allegations at New Mexico State could be “likely,” adding: “We are proceeding with our investigation regarding NMSU and currently have search warrants under seal to preserve the integrity of the investigation. … We’re going to move very quickly and we’re going to put a lot of resources into this investigation and into the likely prosecution of those involved in the conduct. It’s still in the early phase of our criminal investigation and we will certainly let the public know because there is a lot of public interest and anxiety. We are going to move as quickly and as diligently as we can with the criminal investigation and then pivot pretty quickly into the institutional response.” (link)

+ New Mexico Men’s Basketball HC Pitino has received a contract extension through the 2027-28 season. Notably: “Over the life of the new contract, which UNM and Pitino began to negotiate last fall, his annual salary and compensation before bonuses will average about $1.2 million — up from what was about $817,000 per year — and will rank him among the top four earners among the coaches in the Mountain West Conference. [...] Among the bullet points of significant progress the university points to under Pitino’s first two seasons are attendance gains of more than 30% this past season; a win total that rose from six (four vs. Division I programs) in 2020-21 season before he arrived, to 13 in his first year and 22 this past season; and an NCAA NET ranking improvement in that time frame from 306 to 64. The gain of 242 spots is among the top three in the country.” (link)

The Athletic’s Feldman and Olson offer a glimpse inside the football transfer portal and the tampering that occurs, talking with one Group of 5 HC who says he has fended off a few attempts from Power 5 schools attempting to poach his players. “When one program recently tried to make an offer for one of his top offensive players, the senior brought it to the head coach. He called that school’s offensive coordinator, called him out and put a stop to it.” The HC tells Feldman and Olson: “Everybody keeps saying: ‘Why won’t these coaches tell on each other?’ I will if it gets to that point. So far, every time it’s happened, I’ve called the guy on the phone and they know I will go public. I’ve got enough evidence that would be bloody for them.” Pittsburgh HC Narduzzi agrees: “I think not speaking up is wrong. If we don’t speak up, what voice do we have? I talked to some of those NCAA guys and they’re like, ‘No one wants to talk.’ They haven’t done anything with the Jordan Addison thing so, really, what does it matter? Everybody wants to be hush-hush, but why? The only reason to be hush-hush is if you’re breaking the rules yourself and you don’t want someone else to turn you in, and maybe that’s the problem: They’re cheating too. Let’s not turn each other in. That’s what I think it is. I got no problem talking, because we’re doing it the right way here.” More. (link)

FootballScoop’s Brice shares more from the National Football Operations Organization Spring Meetings, which included a Female Football Operations and Support Staff panel, during which Boise State DFO Siegel, Bowling Green DFO Linker and Temple DFO Tekyl shared their experiences and discussed what comes next for women’s advancement in college football. All told, the three would rather discuss the myriad challenges facing the industry as a whole, as Siegel pointed out: “It doesn’t have to do with being female; everyone is in the organization for a reason, and everyone has a voice. There’s very much a hierarchy, but I think it’s learned over time, the more people with a voice, the more people who are listened to, the better the program gets.” Tekyl on her career path: “When I first got in this (profession) from marketing, they had turned an admin role into an assistant operations position. I wanted to make sure it was operations. I think there’s an importance to the level of professionalism, no matter what it is. Knowing where you want to go and having an awareness, being intentional and know where you might’ve failed. Being able to say, ‘I’d go back and do this differently.’ It’s coming into your own and using your voice and knowing you have a seat at the table.” (link)

Indiana for the first time is offering reserved seating season tickets for women’s basketball. Adult reserved tickets will cost $112 while adult general admission tickets are at $96. Tickets for children and seniors are discounted to $48. Hoosiers AD Dolson: “In the last three years, our average attendance at women's basketball games played at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall has more than doubled to 8,104 per game in 2022-23. That ranks in the top 10 nationally, and No. 2 in the Big Ten. We also had our first-ever sellout this past season in our Big Ten championship-clinching win against Purdue." (link)

+ Alabama A&M will install a new playing surface at Louis Crews Stadium. Bulldogs AD Bryant says the new football field will be “state of the art,” adding: “Instead of having rubber pellets, we got coconut husks that keep the field cooler.
