The SCIAC will add Azusa Pacific (DII) as its 10th full member, with the Cougars to restart their Football program in conjunction with their transition to DIII. Commissioner Jenn Dubow: “Azusa Pacific will make a fantastic addition to the SCIAC and further position us as a leading conference in Division III. Their rising academic profile, competitive excellence and commitment to the true student-athlete experience all fit well within our regularly assessed membership criteria and we were thrilled to be able to welcome them to DIII.” APU President Adam Morris: “This decision reflects our dedication to providing a well-rounded educational experience, where students can excel in the classroom and on the field. Southern Maine selects Husson AD John Sutyak as the Huskies’ new AD, starting May 27. It may be time for Congress to determine whether NCAA rules limiting eligibility to four seasons in five years illegally restrain trade, according to Sportico’s Michael McCann, who breaks down the various ways in which the issue could play out. First, the NCAA could eliminate restrictions on how long student-athletes can compete. “Given that universities offer numerous degree programs, it’s conceivable for a student to remain enrolled at a university for many years and past the point at which their bodies lose a step or two on account of aging and wear-and-tear. The NCAA could go even further by lifting a requirement that the student be full-time. … But this possibility is unrealistic. The college sports brand could take a hit if too many late-twentysomething and early-thirtysomething athletes occupy roster slots that would otherwise go to 18- and 19-year olds.” Second, the NCAA could litigate the issue to the end. “It’s possible the Supreme Court could surmise that NCAA eligibility rules are reasonable restrictions that relate to goals in higher ed and ought to be upheld. The danger for the NCAA with the second possibility is if it loses.” Finally, the NCAA could finally convince Congress to act. “Perhaps the NCAA would have more traction by imploring members of Congress to consider an antitrust exemption narrowly limited to athlete eligibility. … The NCAA’s ‘ask’ wouldn’t be for a far-reaching antitrust exemption or national authority over NIL. It would be to maintain basic control over the character of rosters. The NCAA could also assert there is confusion with conflicting court rulings in regard to eligibility. Congress could end that confusion by exempting the NCAA from antitrust lawsuits over eligibility.” (link)

+ Wittenberg has been given a “financial distress” designation by the Higher Learning Commission due to audits on FY21-23. The HLC did acknowledge the cuts the university has made as it works towards a balanced budget. The commission will visit campus in September, at which point the designation could be removed or altered. (link)
+ Ramapo receives a $4M gift from Board of Trustees Chair Susan Vallario and her husband Nick to create a $2M scholarship endowment and support the university’s strategic plan. (link)

The Office for Civil Rights has initiated Title VI investigations into 45 universities “amid allegations that these institutions have violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act (1964) by partnering with ‘The Ph.D. Project,’ an organization that purports to provide doctoral students with insights into obtaining a Ph.D. and networking opportunities, but limits eligibility based on the race of participants,” according to the Department of Education, whose secretary, Linda McMahon, says: “The agency has already launched Title VI investigations into institutions where widespread antisemitic harassment has been reported and Title IX investigations into entities which allegedly continue to allow sex discrimination; today’s announcement expands our efforts to ensure universities are not discriminating against their students based on race and race stereotypes. Students must be assessed according to merit and accomplishment, not prejudged by the color of their skin. We will not yield on this commitment.” DIII institutions include Carnegie Mellon, Chicago, Emory, Ithaca, MIT, NYU and WashU. (link)
