NBC’s Nicole Auerbach asked NCAA President Charlie Baker about North Carolina’s inclusion in the men’s hoops championship field and the role of ADs and commissioners serving on selection committees. Baker replied: “It’s been going on forever. It’s actually one of the reasons why I think if we can come up with a way to make the math work and the geography and the logistics work on expanding the tournament from 68 to 76 (teams), I think it’s a conversation worth having. The bigger we can make the field going in, the less likely it is that it’s going to sting as much as it does (to be left out). It probably still will, I suppose, on some level, but it may sting less than it does today.” Baker also brought up the exclusion of Indiana State and Seton Hall last year and noted such snubs are “inherent in the process.” (link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel tells The Michigan Insider’s Sam Webb that he has “not had any conversation about postseason bans or penalties that are coming” in regards to the Notice of Allegations related to the sign-stealing accusations. “What I can point to is that Charlie Baker, when we won the championship, said they won it fair and square. That's something I can say that gives me some sense that they understand that this was a team who won that championship fair and square. I look at that, and as we move forward, we'll see how it goes." Manuel also talks about the Wolverines’ men’s basketball seed and the impact (or lack thereof) the Big Ten Tournament has. “I think going into the tournament people said we were a five [seed]. So, what was the impact of winning the Big Ten championship? In my mind, probably nothing, and that's where I have the issue. Teams have similar records. … Purdue had two more losses than we did. I'm setting that up to say we are equivalent teams in the conference. We won more than [Purdue and Wisconsin], so in that way we're different. In the end, we played Wisconsin twice. We were 2-0. We played Purdue three times and we're 2-1. So, if we do that, you would expect at least from my vantage point that head-to-head would matter, not statistics on a piece of paper. … It befuddles me to understand how all of that like teams’ head-to-head should matter when you finally go to seeding somebody should say, ’Whoa, whoa, whoa, that doesn’t look right.” Lots more from Manuel. More from Arizona AD Desiree Reed-Francois’ sitdown with the Arizona Daily Star’s Michael Lev, during which Reed-Francois explained how UA is working to improve the fan experience in football and men’s and women’s basketball: “We do a lot of walking, a lot of observing, a lot of listening, whether it’s the fan council, the thousands of surveys we do, sending our marketing group to watch professional sports game-day atmospheres — or even going to see, what’s the standard in our conference? … On football, the sound is not where it needs to be. The video boards are not where they need to be. Those are a little bit longer term — as is, what are we going to with the west side? This year we’re experimenting with field-level suites. So that’s coming. We have to really look at tailoring to some specific game-day programs.” Reed-Francois adds: “We want to expand storytelling. We need to develop an in-house analytics unit (to assess ticketing needs, pricing and structuring). We need to maximize our premium spaces, even ones that aren’t even considered premium spaces (currently). We need to look at those and see how we can make those special and unique. We also really need to look at concerts, even hosting comedy shows, because we have to pay for all of these initiatives. ... Concert revenue is an untapped market. It’s also great for our community, great for our local businesses.” (link)

The Athletic’s Audrey Snyder examines to what extent revenue-sharing will be a differentiator in wrestling and notes Penn State plans to include wrestlers in its distribution. Nittany Lions AD Pat Kraft: “I always tell Cael (Sanderson), we’re going to do whatever we need to do to give you all you need and the resources you need. I don’t envision — and I may be wrong on this — but I don’t envision any program doing 30 scholarships for wrestling. But we’re going to give Cael what he needs, and I can tell you that we’ve added scholarships for him in the future.” Snyder notes Oklahoma State, who finished second to Penn State in last year’s national championship, also plans to earmark some money for wrestlers. Cowboys AD Chad Weiberg says the team will also have more than 9.9 scholarships in the revenue-sharing world. While the exact number has yet to be decided, Weiberg says it’ll likely be in line with Penn State. “You have to keep it in a range. The student-athletes and their families are still making decisions based on who are the coaches, who’s training my son and who’s developing them. … You’re not wanting to ask kids to take less to be part of your program. … We have to make sure that we’re in the competitive range with Iowa, with Penn State, with the others in the sport.” Kraft adds that PSU intends to be agile with revenue-sharing beyond just wrestling: “We’re trying to be able to manage the money so that if we need to move on someone, no matter what the sport is, we have the ability to do so. [If it’s] ‘‘Hey, there’s the No. 1 fencer in the world,’ and we need to go use rev share to maybe tilt it our way, we’re going to be able to do that.” (link)

St. John’s AD Ed Kull confirms the Red Storm will fully opt into revenue-sharing and tells Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich: “I think we’re all trying to navigate the unknown of the future. The portal opens up again on March 24th. We’re trying to be prepared and ready to go—even [donor Mike Repole’s] match is really in preparation for the next season. You hate saying that … but that’s the craziness that we’re dealing with. And it is professional sports.” Attorney Dan Lust, who works closely with the Johnnies on NIL matters, adds: “St. John’s is taking the ‘Power 4’ approach [to NIL] and applying it to a Big East school. Ed and the school work very closely with the collectives to maximize NIL. They have put a big emphasis on apparel partnerships to take advantage of this run…and have deals in place to capitalize on any viral moments during the tournament.” (link)

UCF is launching the Competitive Success Fund to support the Knights’ revenue-sharing efforts. From the release: “Integrated into the ChargeOn Fund, this initiative, in addition to other revenue streams, strengthens the department’s ability to recruit, retain, and develop student-athletes as they compete at the highest levels. All contributions to the fund are tax-deductible.” (link)

The Athletic’s Matt Baker examines how USF believes its $340M stadium will elevate its program in college sports’ new landscape, and Board of Trustees Chair Will Weatherford admits there was no plan when he and other stakeholders began talking about the project: “Sometimes in life you just have to speak things into existence.” Bulls AD Michael Kelly adds that the will was always there, but the way remained unclear. “I think everybody thought that you should (build one). But the practical realities were, there was certainly no money and not high enough on the priority list of the university at the time to make that happen.” The path remains fraught, however, due to increasing construction costs that San Diego State AD John David Wicker says might have prohibited the Aztecs from building Snapdragon Stadium. That project, which cost SDSU $310M, would likely now cost $450-500M, and Wicker says: “At this point. I don’t know how feasible that would be.” In fact, Baker notes trustees have yet to approve the final cost, which Weatherford says has gone up. He referred to it as a “$400M building” in November but said recently it will be “well within what we can afford.” The project has already been postponed a year because of a backed-up supply chain — and that was before the Trump administration’s tariffs and research funding cuts added uncertainties in construction and higher education. Further complicating matters is the prioritization of facilities in an NIL world, but Colorado State President Amy Parsons views these things as cyclical. TV partners, sponsors and other schools, she says, want to associate with competitive programs that excite fan bases, play in major bowls or make the NCAA Tournament. “And it starts with, does a school have the commitment to the program and value the program in order to compete at that level?” Baker adds: “If a school is spending nine figures on its stadium, the answer is a clear yes. Especially against these headwinds.” Lots more. (link)

The NCAA has launched a new video to air throughout the men's and women's March Madness tournament broadcasts, as well as online, as part of the Draw the Line campaign. The new spot, titled "Don't Be a Loser," calls attention to the alarming prevalence of abuse and harassment student-athletes face from angry fans who lost a bet. NCAA President Charlie Baker: "The horrific messages we are seeing across online platforms is absolutely unacceptable. Angry fans are sending numerous abusive messages and threats to student-athletes, publicly and privately, because of lost bets placed on the athlete's performance in a game. These actions severely threaten student-athlete mental health and well-being, while harming the college athletics environment. We need fans to do better. We need states to do better and ban player props that target student-athletes and enable detrimental abuse." Check out the video. (link)

EA Sports is increasing its payments to players who opt into College Football 26 to $1,500. As was the case last year, some athletes will receive additional compensation to serve as brand ambassadors to promote the game, according to The Athletic’s Chris Vannini. A representative for EA Sports said Pathway Sports & Entertainment’s launch earlier this year did not impact EA’s decision to more than double the player compensation for this year’s game and instead that the rate was increased to make sure athletes feel recognized for the success of the game. Vannini: “Either way, the combination of Pathway’s up-front payment and EA Sports’ increase in compensation means some players could receive $3,000 this year just for being in the game. Pathway’s agreements with players are non-exclusive for the first year, meaning they won’t impact CFB26, but they could create tension in future games. EA Sports’ agreements with players are also non-exclusive, but they last throughout a player’s college career, with an opt-out period each December. Players do not receive royalties based on game sales.” Pathway President Casey Schwab: “This is great news for college football players and aligns with our vision at Pathway, which is to provide the most professional, transparent and legitimate NIL program for college athletes. We look forward to working with EA and others to achieve our long-term goals.” In total, Vannini reports EA will spend more than $16.5M for the NIL rights of players, the largest single-sport NIL deal ever. CBS enjoyed its second most-watched NCAA Men’s Basketball Selection Show since 2019 with 5.7M viewers per SBJ’s Austin Karp, who notes viewership was down 3% from 2024 but up 12% from 2023 and up 15% from 2022. (link); The Big Ten men’s basketball championship between Michigan and Wisconsin drew 4.53M viewers to CBS, which Karp notes is a 25% increase over last year’s Illinois-Wisconsin final. “That gives CBS the two best men's hoops games this season. No. 1 was Arkansas-Illinois on Thanksgiving (thank you NFL adjacency) with 5.17M.” (link)

Terms have been released in the NCAA’s settlement with Tennessee and other states over an injunction preventing the NCAA from enforcing rules around booster-athlete NIL negotiations. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger: “Of note: Though the injunction will continue, it will not impact the House settlement.” Tennessee AG Jonathan Skrmetti: “We fought hard to protect the rights of Tennessee’s student-athletes and this settlement locks in the victory for them. With a multi-billion-dollar entertainment industry rising from the foundation of college sports, the kids who make it all happen should not be the only people denied an opportunity to prosper. This settlement benefits generations of student-athletes, protects Tennessee universities from NCAA retaliation, and pushes college sports toward a new equilibrium that acknowledges financial reality while preserving competitive integrity. I’m glad to see the NCAA give up on defending a world that no longer exists. I hope the association’s laudable change of position marks a transition from acting as the worst kind of HOA toward cultivating a new era of great college sports for athletes, schools, and fans. We all dream of a future when you can keep up with college sports without having to learn the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.” (link, link); ESPN’s Dan Murphy explains the settlement means the “NCAA has agreed to permanently drop its rule prohibiting athletes from negotiating the terms of name, image and likeness payments until after they enroll in school,” and an NCAA spokesperson says: "This agreement continues the progress we have made over the last few years in allowing prospective and transferring student-athletes to seek out NIL opportunities. This judgment is fully consistent with the House settlement and underscores our support for student-athletes benefiting from their NIL and our commitment to provide increased benefits to student-athletes at every stage in their collegiate experience, creating a sustainable model for the future of college sports." USF AD Michael Kelly joins the On the Fly podcast to discuss the Bulls’ facilities strategies, including how the department is financing its $340M football stadium. The USF Financing Corporation plans to issue $200M in debt, as approved by Florida's Board of Governors in September 2023, and Kelly notes the loan will be repaid through various revenue sources, including operating revenues from the stadium and other athletics-generated income. An additional $50M is targeted through private donations. As of November 2024, USF had secured over $45M, with significant contributions like the $25M from Tampa General Hospital. Kelly emphasizes that this comprehensive funding approach ensures the project does not rely on tax dollars or state funding, reflecting the university's commitment to financial responsibility. “Our ambitions are now known and they have been spoken into existence. What I know is we have $25M in pledges raised for our indoor facility and those numbers have not happened in the 55 years of playing sports at USF. We have a plan. We have momentum." Kelly also says the Bulls will add more than 100 scholarships post-House “and then we'll be able to figure out sometime before the budget is set how much [revenue will be shared]. I don't believe we’ll be at $20M, but we're going to get as high as we possibly can. … If we can get to the limit, we'll get there as fast as we can, but regardless we'll continue to strive to be at the very top of our current conference.” Full podcast. Bloomberg’s Ira Boudway explores the viability of the Deloitte-led NIL clearinghouse as part of the House settlement, and A-Mark Partnership Strategies Founder/CEO Jim Andrews says: “I don’t see that there’s any way that it’s not messy. That’s not to say that it can’t be done or that the very smart people at Deloitte cannot come up with something that is very good.” In fact, Boudway is told by a source familiar with the implementation committee that there will be “flexibility built into the system” with “allowance for a range of compensation for similar deals. Those that don’t pass muster can be renegotiated or appealed to an independent arbitrator.” Building the clearinghouse itself is something Opendorse Founder Blake Lawrence “wouldn’t wish upon my worst enemy, because I’ve done it,” and Boudway notes: “Let’s assume, however, that Deloitte can get the job done. That’s when the problems really begin. Schools are counting on athletes to report their deals. Not all will. While the NCAA has a rule requiring disclosure, many players have decided it’s toothless and have opted to ignore it. Lawrence estimates that 80% of NIL transactions go undisclosed, a rate he expects to stay the same once the settlement is in effect. This leaves the NCAA in the familiar position of having to decide what to do when a star recruit from a low-income family shows up to school in a Lamborghini.” Ultimately, Boudway concludes: “Most pro sports leagues in the US have some version of a fair market value rule to prevent teams from using third-party deals as a way around payroll restrictions. But those rules are part of collectively bargained agreements with players, which provide an antitrust exemption, something college sports don’t have. The NCAA is betting it can corral the market using a class-action settlement instead. My March Madness pick this year is that they’re wrong.” (link)

NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament ad sales for Disney/ESPN are up 132% YoY, according to SBJ’s Mollie Cahillane, who reports revenue “has grown nearly 300% in the first year of a new media-rights pact between ESPN and the NCAA (of which the women’s tourney is a part), with some 30-second spots climbing to nearly $1.5M for the championship game. A source close to negotiations broke down average prices for a 30-second spot in the NCAA Women’s Championship Game over the last couple years: FY23: $65,830 (9.9M viewers for LSU-Iowa across ABC/ESPN2; also the first time the game was on broadcast TV); FY24: $188,870 (a record 18.9M viewers for South Carolina-Iowa across ABC/ESPN, marking a record for a women’s title game and beating the audience for UConn-Purdue on the men’s side); FY25: $438,692.” Cahillane also notes ESPN reached 112 total advertisers for this year’s women’s tourney, jumping to 18 total categories. Disney Advertising’s VP for Revenue and Yield Management Jacqueline Dobies tells Cahillane ESPN has hit 95% in sell-out for the women’s tournament, with a few opportunities remaining in early rounds. Approximately 80% of that inventory sold out during the upfront. Dobies adds: “The unit rates we’re seeing are on par with the NBA Finals, for things like the men's college football championship game. Internally, we’ve had to change the vernacular of ‘champ game.’ The revenue and the type of demand and pricing that we’re seeing there -- parity is happening.” Additionally, Cahillane reports CBS and TNT have sold out March Madness inventory for the men’s tourney, surpassing $1B in sales. Michigan regent Denise Ilitch believes it’s only a matter of time before the Wolverines start a women’s hockey program and tells the AP: “All I can say is those that are the supporters and the board and the president all want the same thing. So I think we’ll move as quickly as we can. I don’t want to put a date on it though but, boy, I’m hoping within the next few months we’re able to have at least a direction on whether it’ll be Yost or a new arena.” A recent feasibility study by Collegiate Sports Associates estimated it would cost $300M to build a new one-rink facility with an 8,000-10,000 seating capacity. CSA also priced out a new two-rink facility at $330M — with the second ice sheet providing more revenue-generating potential. (link)

The “auditions to be the next CEO of Disney are in full swing,” according to Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw, who notes that earlier this month “Entertainment co-Chair Dana Walden appeared at a Morgan Stanley conference to tout the profitability of Disney’s streaming services. Days later, parks chief Josh D’Amaro and Walden’s co-Chair Alan Bergman appeared at South by Southwest to discuss their creative collaborations. These public appearances aren’t designed as tests. CEO Bob Iger is asking his top deputies to represent the company on his behalf and giving them a chance to own their victories after a good run.” While Shaw contends that no one knows who will be the next CEO, he reports the board is still leaning toward an internal choice and has identified four insiders: Bergman, D’Amaro, Walden and ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro. … Pitaro has communicated to both friends and the board that he’s not interested in the role.” Shaw goes on to explain that “while it’s hard to imagine the board ignoring Iger’s opinions, [James] Gorman, the former CEO of Morgan Stanley, is firmly in charge of the process. He leads the board’s succession planning committee, which also includes General Motors CEO Mary Barra and Calvin McDonald, CEO of Lululemon. The committee met seven times in fiscal 2024. Which means the real pressure right now isn’t on the candidates. It’s on the board.” (link)
