JohnCanzano.com’s namesake is told that the Pac-12 adding anyone other than Memphis, UNLV, Tulane, Rice, Texas State, USF, UTSA, Nevada or North Texas would be a surprise and notes that “UNLV and Nevada would be a geographically logical next step, but I’m told by multiple sources that the Pac-12 has been weighing an assortment of other factors. Among those factors are brand, athletic success, the will to invest, travel expenses, geography, and economics. At least one of the potential candidates on the list has offered to take zero media rights distributions in the early years of membership, per a source. Others come with a variety of advantages and complications, including different exit fees.” In breaking down each potential candidate, Canzano writes: “I’d be willing to bet that Texas State is among the schools open to coming into the Pac-12 at a reduced media rights share — or maybe no share at all in the early years of the media deal. Don’t discount the bottom line value if that’s on the table. This potential addition would get the Pac-12 into the state of Texas (favorable recruiting). There’s also a willingness to invest in athletics, and the donors have deep pockets. I wonder if the Pac-12 would have to take one additional Texas member to make this addition pencil out from a travel standpoint.” Canzano on USF: “I’ll include this one because it dovetails with the additions of Memphis and Tulane. I wouldn’t want to send my Olympic sports athletes across the country, ideally. But if you had a trio of schools in the region that create a travel cluster, South Florida becomes interesting. It also fortifies the Pac-12 as the obvious ‘Best of the Rest’ conference.” More. (link)

Since his arrival on The Farm in December of 2022, Stanford Football HC Troy Taylor has been investigated on multiple occasions for bullying & inappropriate comments toward coworkers. Specifically, from ESPN: “(Taylor) sought to have an NCAA compliance officer removed after she warned him of rules violations and repeatedly made ‘inappropriate’ comments to another woman about her appearance, according to documents from a pair of investigations obtained by ESPN. [...] Matt Doyle, senior associate athletics director, also received a warning after the first investigation cited him for inappropriate conduct. Doyle could not immediately be reached Wednesday. [...] Taylor told investigators he believed he was being personally targeted by the compliance team, but neither investigation supported his assertion. [...] Multiple staffers expressed a deep sense of fear of retaliation for reporting issues or cooperating with investigators. According to the documents, Doyle told (KWP Consulting & Mediation’s Kate Weaver) Patterson that he believed Taylor froze him out of meetings because he agreed to cooperate with the investigation.” Lots more, including a statement from Taylor: “I willingly complied with the investigations, accepted the recommendations that came out of them, and used them as a learning opportunity to grow in leadership and how I interact with others. I look forward to continuing to work collaboratively and collegially with my colleagues so that we can achieve success for our football program together.” (link)

The News & Observer’s Shelby Swanson writes on the ACC’s strong position to cash in on new unit payouts as the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament begins in earnest tomorrow. The league has eight programs in the tourney, including four who are hosting first & second round games & each unit worth $113,636. Duke AD Nina King: “We were prepared for it. As soon as the NCAA vote came to a head, we were ready to implement women’s basketball units based on success. I think it’s really exciting, a big move for the ACC. [...] For women’s basketball, we have more folks on the bench, which I think is a product of this. The number of coaches is mandated by the NCAA, but why shouldn’t the women be able to add the player development person or the recruiting person, or the video coordinators? If you take a look at our staff on our website, the number of staff for women’s basketball really has grown along with the men.” ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips: “Units for women’s basketball is just one example of the elevation and appropriate recognition of women’s sports in an area I’ve been very vocal and supportive of.” (link)

Sportico’s Jacob Feldman is the latest to chronicle the SEC’s ascension in men’s hoops and notes the league “has been a slumbering basketball behemoth for most of the century. In 2016, it saw just three teams make the tournament, with Vanderbilt eliminated in the First Four by 20 points. But the conference has since put a renewed focus on hoops. Growing coffers were opened to improve facilities and hire top coaches. Advanced NIL programs have attracted—and retained—top talent. Expansion turned a super conference into a superconference.” Feldman goes on to note that “none of this is complicated. Yes, the Big Ten distributes a similar amount of revenue to its schools, but the SEC spends more on average on basketball, based on balance sheets reviewed by Sportico.” SEC Assoc. Commissioner for Basketball Garth Glissman believes there are other factors that will continue contributing to the league’s success, telling Feldman that basketball remains the sport of cities, and nine of the 10 fastest-growing metro areas are in the South. The region surpassed the Northeast’s population in 1998, and the South now boasts a higher share of national GDP, too. “There was a tremendous talent base in this part of the country. Economic activity in this part of the country is on fire. Enrollment trends at our institutions are on fire. Football has been on fire. … I just looked at it objectively and said, ‘This thing is going to take off.’” (link)

ESPN’s Dan Wetzel points out that of the eight men’s basketball teams seeded either No. 1 or No. 2 in this year's men's bracket, five are led by men 65 or older. One of those coaches, Michigan State HC Tom Izzo, explains: "I'll tell you why. I think as hard as it's been on everybody, as impossible as it's been to deal with, the experienced guys have been there and done that. And then it is, 'Can they adjust?' Some can, some can't. … I kind of wavered a couple of years, too. Then I just said, 'You may have to make adjustments, but the meat and potatoes of it are, can you defend, rebound, run, take care of the ball? Can you motivate kids to do something they didn't even think they could do?' That is still the essence of this whole deal." Wetzel notes it’s “no wonder that player payments and movement have been greeted with fear. Anytime an older coach retires -- often throwing up his hands at the state of affairs -- it's hailed as proof that this is somehow unsustainable and the end times for college athletics has arrived.” For Izzo it meant changing his approach to team-building. He’s set up more bonding opportunities, especially off the court, with trips ranging from an August barnstorming tour of Spain to a Detroit Tigers game. He engages in more individual communication. He tells Wetzel: "I want them to see me as the other side of the guy, but sooner or later I've got to say, 'Listen, I've been there, done that. If you want to listen to those idiots over there, or you can take a chance on me. But you have to figure it out.'" (link)

Syracuse Football HC Fran Brown says the Orange’s NIL budget currently ranks in the middle of the pack for the ACC. However, SU plans to raise an additional $6M to $8M within the next year above the revenue share cap, which could get Brown’s program into the top 25% within the league. (link)

Southern Miss Football HC Charles Huff explains his program’s interesting approach to team-building this season: "We're a little bit different. We're not into building the team yet. This first phase, the way we've talked about it with our guys, is this first phase we're into building the individual. We're not into building the team yet because the reality of it is some of these guys won't be here. That's just the reality of it. It's not a negative. It's like the NFL, there's free agency now. There are some guys on teams that are going to have to move on to other teams. Here, once we evaluate holistically, and I'm not just talking about whether he can run or can't run, but also he can't go to class every single day, he can't prepare for practice, he can't manage himself by showing up on time - or he's a great player that just doesn't fit in these schemes. That's the reality of it, there's still a shifting of who is going to be on the team. … What we're trying to do is not blend a team right now, we're trying to teach all of the individuals and how it looks like to be on this team, then we can start to blend it when we decide exactly who is going to be on the team." Learfield Executive Director for NIL Growth and Development Solly Fulp and SVP/Head of Content Grant Jones join the Digital and Social Media Sports podcast to discuss the revenue opportunities associated with NIL, and Fulp explains that “we've experienced an 18% growth in our core business when student-athlete influencer marketing is incorporated versus a 6% year-over-year growth. Although we don't know the exact causality of that, what we can say today is that sponsors spend more when student-athletes are involved in the campaigns. I also think that new business categories are being opened up because of student-athlete storytelling. I think sponsors that have said no to us in the past…are coming back and engaging with us on the influencer marketing opportunities.” Fulp goes on to note that “we've been an event-driven business. We’ve been selling football packages and basketball packages and it's been really wrapped around the actual athletic event. This opens up the year-round engagement with the student-athletes that these university communities want.” Jones notes Learfield has upwards of 60 content creators based at roughly 40 schools across the country, and “our content efforts are built entirely to monetize the content we're making. Athletic departments, who have amazing content creators as well, a lot of their priorities are based on traditional marketing of a team or a student-athlete – they have a lot of things to do in terms of serving their fan base, and our entire operation is making sure that we can plug into their operation…[and] make sure we’re monetizing content. Right now it’s March and our content teams are not talking about ideas for basketball. They’re not really even talking about ideas for baseball. We’re already talking about football, and we have to know what are we doing come August, September, October because those are the conversations our sales teams are having right now.” Full podcast. Teamworks has released a statement in conjunction with the lawsuit filed by the Philadelphia Phillies against Zelus Analytics: “Teamworks Intelligence, formerly Zelus Analytics, is proud to offer analytics capabilities so differentiated, impactful, and innovative that the Phillies have attempted to block its rivals from gaining access. While we cannot comment on the specifics of the litigation, we are confident that Teamworks is acting in compliance with the agreement. We look forward to resolving this matter, and in the meantime, we will continue delivering world-class solutions that equip organizations to make decisions that help them excel on and off the field.” Also notable from Sportico’s Michael McCann: “The Phillies say that since 2022, they have paid more than $1.75 million for access to Titan (Intelligence) and its analytics models. The team also says it has committed an additional $725K (or $675K via prepayment) for the 2025 season.” (link)

Endeavor has agreed to pay a total of $225M to give its IMG Arena data platform and the accompanying portfolio of rights to Sportradar, and Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams explains the $225M includes a “$125M payment to Sportradar and up to $100M in ‘cash prepayments’ to some of its various partners. Sportradar will assume IMG Arena and its business, which includes over 70 rightsholders across 14 sports and 30,000 streaming events. … A representative for Endeavor declined to comment on the financial specifics, or why the company paid to unload IMG Arena. It may be paying to unload IMG Arena just to get it off the books, or because the rights deals are hard to monetize. A rep for Sportradar also declined to comment.” (link)

The Mack Report’s Mike McMahon indicates Merrimack will opt into the House settlement. Further: “A source said a few weeks ago that ‘about half’ of the MAAC schools were expected to opt in. In Hockey East, confirmed opt-in schools include Boston College, UMass, and Northeastern. UConn and Providence have not made official announcements, but both are expected to opt in because of the impact it will have on their basketball programs. New Hampshire, Maine, Boston University, and UMass Lowell have not announced their intentions. Vermont is planning to opt in in two years (2026-27), in an effort to prevent roster cuts associated with getting under the new limits in some of its sports.” (link)

ESPN analyst Jay Bilas tells Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams and Jacob Feldman that in order to boost the ACC’s men’s basketball play he would implement a spending floor. “If you’re not spending X amount of dollars, then whatever you spend under that, you have to give to the other teams in the league.” Bilas also believes ACC schools should not be allowed to schedule “substandard teams” for its non-conference games since it harms everyone in the league for metrics used by the NCAA Tournament selection committee. He also said the league “should be able to consult on coaching hires,” which is common in some other conferences. “You’re a member of a league, the league should be able to mandate how you do things. Especially when there are significant repercussions on the rest of the league if you underperform.” Novy-Williams and Feldman note that ACC teams spent an average of $13.5M on men’s basketball in 2022-23, the most of any conference; however, the “gap is tightening. From 2017-18 to 2022-23, ACC teams reported a 20% increase in spending—the smallest increase among the major conferences and below the rate of inflation. The Big Ten’s spending jumped 21% in the span, followed by 30% in the Big 12, 33% in the SEC and 36% in the Pac-12.” (link)

USA Today’s Dan Wolken breaks down the advantage that basketball-focused schools will have in revenue-sharing and notes that if Georgia, for example, allocates 15% of a $22M rev-share cap to men’s hoops, that comes out to $3.3M. Meanwhile, VCU AD Ed McLaughlin tells Wolken: “We fully anticipate the revenue-sharing number for us next year to be between $4M and $5M. I think we are positioned from strength as this goes forward because we can share revenue with our men's and women's basketball student-athletes at an incredibly high competitive level to make sure we are a top 25 program. We will never get to the bigger cap, and that's OK. But we will certainly be able to invest in a high level for the programs that matter financially the most to us.” A source connected to several HC searches tells Wolken: “The Daytons, the VCUs, they’ve always been good jobs, but they’ll have money to compete with the so-called blue bloods. Schools like Florida State or Miami, they're not going to resource basketball at that level. There are coaches in the Big Ten saying, 'Hey, I think football's going to swallow up all my money and I may need to get out.'” Xavier AD Greg Christopher doesn’t expect the Big East’s rev-share numbers to deviate much from what schools are offering via NIL and adds: "It's probably a little early for us to get down to a Xavier-specific number, but I would say that from what I've heard this year for NIL purposes in our league, the bandwidth is generally in that $3-5M range.” (link)

A group of New Mexico State donors have sent a letter to President Valerio Ferme expressing their displeasure with former AD Mario Moccia’s ouster. The group, which calls itself Community For a Stronger NMSU, outlines three main grievances: Pay Moccia the remainder of the money on his former contract (approximately $1.3M); “respect the history and culture of NMSU” by "considering" stakeholders such as alumni, students and staff members in decision-making; and “repair the relationship" between NMSU and its stakeholders. The Las Cruces Sun-News’ Nick Coppola also obtained “a petition with 498 signatures, including group members, sent to Ferme on March 6. NMSU provided the names of every signee, nine of which are repeated, and include former NMSU Alumni Association President Tony Martinez and former NMSU All-American running back Larry Rose III.” Community for a Stronger NMSU member Mickey Clute tells Coppola: "Two-and-a-half years (after the 2022-23 NMSU men's basketball scandals which ultimately led to Moccia's firing), somebody comes in who had no part of it, is not part of the history of the school, ever. Nothing. From the outside, he comes in and makes that determination two-and-a-half years after that. Not on current knowledge, not talking to any other contemporaries that were there. Perhaps he's talked to professors. I don't think he talked to athletic-supporting donors." Ferme reportedly reached out to some group members upon receiving the letter in January and says: "They feel ownership because they donated to the program. They feel that without their support, certain things would not happen. They are afraid. They are concerned about the future of athletics. I keep on repeating and reminding them that I was a college athlete. I was also a college coach for six years. I understand the world of sports, so I'm not as naive as they might think." Lots more. The performance of Mountain West and new Pac-12 teams in March Madness will have little to no bearing on media rights valuations, according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who explains: “The math simply doesn’t allow otherwise. In college sports, basketball accounts for just 20 cents of every $1 spent on media rights by the broadcast and cable networks. Football is responsible for the remainder.” Even then, media companies examine a far bigger picture than one tournament. “The negotiators hired by the conferences — the Pac-12 has retained Octagon; the Mountain West is using Endeavor — will use every data point available to better their position. But network executives take a multi-year view of the ratings generated by specific teams and leagues. They understand success ‘can be cyclical,’ one source explained.” As it relates to March Madness specifically, Wilner notes the “staying power of Gonzaga’s brand is already baked into the valuation models. What happens this month won’t alter the equation enough to add significant revenue for the Zags and the rest of the rebuilt Pac-12.” All that said, Wilner posits that should either league try to sell its football and basketball packages separately, then “success in the NCAAs this month could be material. Otherwise, on-court performance is more about vibe than value.” (link)

The Ivy League’s three NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament berths have been a long time coming, according to Harvard HC Carrie Moore, who tells the New York Post’s Madeline Kenney: “You see the brands of this league really paying dividends. We can call anyone in the country and they will pick up because it’s Harvard. … Getting the right people in place as coaches, I think it was really important, and now you see great players, you see professionals that are really taking off during their time playing in this league. And I definitely have never seen the league as good as it’s been this season.” Columbia HC Megan Griffith adds: “The level of play, the talent in our league right now, it’s unprecedented compared to where we were. Even thinking back to when I played, there were no professional basketball players — that was not a common thing. And now we’re talking about WNBA draft picks every year in our league and the buzz around that. So it’s great for the league, and I think it’s really going to help us continue to build momentum and recruiting great players to our league.” (link)

Moody’s has revised its outlook on higher education from stable to negative “as recent and potential federal policy changes create a more difficult operating environment for colleges and universities. Actions and potential changes include cuts to research funding, enforcement actions against diversity programs, staff reductions at the US Department of Education, uncertainty over federal student aid, and possible expanded taxes on endowments. These factors are causing institutions to pause capital investments, freeze hiring, and cut spending. Macroeconomic uncertainty, driven by shifting policies and market volatility, adds to the risks for institutions already dealing with elevated expense growth and enrollment challenges. However, top-rated institutions with strong demand and significant financial resources are better equipped to handle these challenges than those with weaker brands and more limited financial resources. … The outlook could change to stable if many of the federal policies and proposals are reversed or halted by judicial intervention or do not come to pass. Stronger-than-expected investment market returns and operating revenue growth could also lead to a revision of the outlook to stable.” (link)
