Cal Baptist will join the Big West as a full member beginning in the 2026-27 academic year. Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly: "The addition of California Baptist University marks a significant step forward for The Big West. CBU aligns with our mission of fostering competitive excellence, academic achievement and service within our communities. We are excited to welcome them and look forward to the talent, excitement and rivalries they will bring beginning July 1, 2026.” (link)

The Mack Report’s Mike McMahon indicates Merrimack will opt into the House settlement. Further: “A source said a few weeks ago that ‘about half’ of the MAAC schools were expected to opt in. In Hockey East, confirmed opt-in schools include Boston College, UMass, and Northeastern. UConn and Providence have not made official announcements, but both are expected to opt in because of the impact it will have on their basketball programs. New Hampshire, Maine, Boston University, and UMass Lowell have not announced their intentions. Vermont is planning to opt in in two years (2026-27), in an effort to prevent roster cuts associated with getting under the new limits in some of its sports.” (link)

ESPN analyst Jay Bilas tells Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams and Jacob Feldman that in order to boost the ACC’s men’s basketball play he would implement a spending floor. “If you’re not spending X amount of dollars, then whatever you spend under that, you have to give to the other teams in the league.” Bilas also believes ACC schools should not be allowed to schedule “substandard teams” for its non-conference games since it harms everyone in the league for metrics used by the NCAA Tournament selection committee. He also said the league “should be able to consult on coaching hires,” which is common in some other conferences. “You’re a member of a league, the league should be able to mandate how you do things. Especially when there are significant repercussions on the rest of the league if you underperform.” Novy-Williams and Feldman note that ACC teams spent an average of $13.5M on men’s basketball in 2022-23, the most of any conference; however, the “gap is tightening. From 2017-18 to 2022-23, ACC teams reported a 20% increase in spending—the smallest increase among the major conferences and below the rate of inflation. The Big Ten’s spending jumped 21% in the span, followed by 30% in the Big 12, 33% in the SEC and 36% in the Pac-12.” (link)

USA Today’s Dan Wolken breaks down the advantage that basketball-focused schools will have in revenue-sharing and notes that if Georgia, for example, allocates 15% of a $22M rev-share cap to men’s hoops, that comes out to $3.3M. Meanwhile, VCU AD Ed McLaughlin tells Wolken: “We fully anticipate the revenue-sharing number for us next year to be between $4M and $5M. I think we are positioned from strength as this goes forward because we can share revenue with our men's and women's basketball student-athletes at an incredibly high competitive level to make sure we are a top 25 program. We will never get to the bigger cap, and that's OK. But we will certainly be able to invest in a high level for the programs that matter financially the most to us.” A source connected to several HC searches tells Wolken: “The Daytons, the VCUs, they’ve always been good jobs, but they’ll have money to compete with the so-called blue bloods. Schools like Florida State or Miami, they're not going to resource basketball at that level. There are coaches in the Big Ten saying, 'Hey, I think football's going to swallow up all my money and I may need to get out.'” Xavier AD Greg Christopher doesn’t expect the Big East’s rev-share numbers to deviate much from what schools are offering via NIL and adds: "It's probably a little early for us to get down to a Xavier-specific number, but I would say that from what I've heard this year for NIL purposes in our league, the bandwidth is generally in that $3-5M range.” (link)

A group of New Mexico State donors have sent a letter to President Valerio Ferme expressing their displeasure with former AD Mario Moccia’s ouster. The group, which calls itself Community For a Stronger NMSU, outlines three main grievances: Pay Moccia the remainder of the money on his former contract (approximately $1.3M); “respect the history and culture of NMSU” by "considering" stakeholders such as alumni, students and staff members in decision-making; and “repair the relationship" between NMSU and its stakeholders. The Las Cruces Sun-News’ Nick Coppola also obtained “a petition with 498 signatures, including group members, sent to Ferme on March 6. NMSU provided the names of every signee, nine of which are repeated, and include former NMSU Alumni Association President Tony Martinez and former NMSU All-American running back Larry Rose III.” Community for a Stronger NMSU member Mickey Clute tells Coppola: "Two-and-a-half years (after the 2022-23 NMSU men's basketball scandals which ultimately led to Moccia's firing), somebody comes in who had no part of it, is not part of the history of the school, ever. Nothing. From the outside, he comes in and makes that determination two-and-a-half years after that. Not on current knowledge, not talking to any other contemporaries that were there. Perhaps he's talked to professors. I don't think he talked to athletic-supporting donors." Ferme reportedly reached out to some group members upon receiving the letter in January and says: "They feel ownership because they donated to the program. They feel that without their support, certain things would not happen. They are afraid. They are concerned about the future of athletics. I keep on repeating and reminding them that I was a college athlete. I was also a college coach for six years. I understand the world of sports, so I'm not as naive as they might think." Lots more. The performance of Mountain West and new Pac-12 teams in March Madness will have little to no bearing on media rights valuations, according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who explains: “The math simply doesn’t allow otherwise. In college sports, basketball accounts for just 20 cents of every $1 spent on media rights by the broadcast and cable networks. Football is responsible for the remainder.” Even then, media companies examine a far bigger picture than one tournament. “The negotiators hired by the conferences — the Pac-12 has retained Octagon; the Mountain West is using Endeavor — will use every data point available to better their position. But network executives take a multi-year view of the ratings generated by specific teams and leagues. They understand success ‘can be cyclical,’ one source explained.” As it relates to March Madness specifically, Wilner notes the “staying power of Gonzaga’s brand is already baked into the valuation models. What happens this month won’t alter the equation enough to add significant revenue for the Zags and the rest of the rebuilt Pac-12.” All that said, Wilner posits that should either league try to sell its football and basketball packages separately, then “success in the NCAAs this month could be material. Otherwise, on-court performance is more about vibe than value.” (link)

The Ivy League’s three NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament berths have been a long time coming, according to Harvard HC Carrie Moore, who tells the New York Post’s Madeline Kenney: “You see the brands of this league really paying dividends. We can call anyone in the country and they will pick up because it’s Harvard. … Getting the right people in place as coaches, I think it was really important, and now you see great players, you see professionals that are really taking off during their time playing in this league. And I definitely have never seen the league as good as it’s been this season.” Columbia HC Megan Griffith adds: “The level of play, the talent in our league right now, it’s unprecedented compared to where we were. Even thinking back to when I played, there were no professional basketball players — that was not a common thing. And now we’re talking about WNBA draft picks every year in our league and the buzz around that. So it’s great for the league, and I think it’s really going to help us continue to build momentum and recruiting great players to our league.” (link)

Moody’s has revised its outlook on higher education from stable to negative “as recent and potential federal policy changes create a more difficult operating environment for colleges and universities. Actions and potential changes include cuts to research funding, enforcement actions against diversity programs, staff reductions at the US Department of Education, uncertainty over federal student aid, and possible expanded taxes on endowments. These factors are causing institutions to pause capital investments, freeze hiring, and cut spending. Macroeconomic uncertainty, driven by shifting policies and market volatility, adds to the risks for institutions already dealing with elevated expense growth and enrollment challenges. However, top-rated institutions with strong demand and significant financial resources are better equipped to handle these challenges than those with weaker brands and more limited financial resources. … The outlook could change to stable if many of the federal policies and proposals are reversed or halted by judicial intervention or do not come to pass. Stronger-than-expected investment market returns and operating revenue growth could also lead to a revision of the outlook to stable.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker joins CBS Evening News to discuss the House settlement and says: “I do believe the settlement will create a much saner way of doing this than the way it works now, and I hope what we get out of it is an NIL program that’s more transparent, more accountable, and one that actually works on this idea that this is still a development exercise for young people.” Baker also says of the NCAA’s efforts to combat gambling-related harassment of players: “Part of the way we’re fixing it is by nudging state gaming authorities. We now have about half of them where you can’t prop bet on college sports, and we’ve got to work the other half. It’s a bad situation.” (link)

NCAA VP of Championships Business Affairs Chris Termini tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy the organization is increasingly focused on generating more revenue to keep up with the changing landscape: “I’ll say that broadly the NCAA has been entrenched in a lot of principles or ideals that the membership has long abandoned. We’re playing catchup, in a way, to where the membership already is in a lot of cases. ... For example, the College Football Playoff has had a beer sponsor for a long time. There are opportunities that every day we’re talking about…that we have either not pursued or that we forfeited for a variety of reasons. Having said that, I do think there are some third rails and bright lines that we’re not going to cross into.” Termini adds that “there are profound consequences to being a nonprofit organization. It means we don’t have shareholders, and we’re not maximizing value, and we have ideals that we have to continue to honor and respect. That translates into certain lines in the sand that we will not cross. … We conduct 90, soon to be 91, postseason events, and that comes with a lot of economic issues. We’ve always had a dedicated and talented staff to manage all those relationships, whether it’s our broadcast partnerships, our sponsors, our digital rights, our ticketing and marketing operations. But in this new environment, there is an expectation that we are going to be investing and excellent stewards of all those rights.” (link)

BYU AD Tom Holmoe is asked about the financial impact of NIL and says: “I think in the last two or three years, as we have transitioned or guided our way through collectives and NIL and transfer portal, it’s a change for many fans, and some fans really don't like it and some fans are intrigued by it. But the fact of the matter is this is where we are and this is where we're going. So as fans and administration, as coaches and student-athletes, we all have to adapt. Sports in any area, whether it's little league, high school, college or pro is about change. It's about transitions and it's about adapting and being able to stay ahead of the curve. And everybody's trying to do that. So, if you look at that right now, I think our fans have adjusted and have adapted rather efficiently, and I think, for that matter, we've had a little bit more success financially with donations and sponsorships and things like that that have helped us and will help us going forward.” Holmoe credits BYU fans with being “savvy” and understanding the competitive advantage they could provide under the new system. “They wanted to know the changes, so I had numerous discussions – and heated discussions – about exactly how it goes and NIL works and revenue-share works and the transfer portal works. And when you have a very educated conversation, and each other can learn from each other, they've come on board. It’s been a little bit tricky sometimes to get some people, and some people are like, ‘Look, I'm not jumping into NIL, but I'll help in other ways,’ and to me that’s fine. To each his own.” (link)

The Morgan State Board of Regents has approved the university’s decision to opt into the revenue-sharing terms of the House settlement. Bears AD Dena Freeman-Patton: “This decision allows us to leverage institutional resources strategically, invest in our programs, and create pathways for financial support beyond traditional NIL opportunities. Ultimately, this strengthens our ability to recruit, retain, and support the next generation of Morgan Bear athletes." (link)

The Virginia Tech Board of Visitors is likely to approve a $186 student fee increase that would bring in an additional $8.85M in revenue for athletics, per 247Sports’ Doug Bowman. Tech Sideline’s Andy Bitter adds: “Would cover a good chunk of the annual $20.5M in revenue sharing that'll start going to players starting this summer. [The] Hokies had the first year's money secured. Were looking for ways to firm that up for future seasons.” (link)

Western Kentucky AD Todd Stewart explains the Hilltoppers’ decision not to play in the WNIT: “Historically, if you look at all of our sports, we have never played in the third best postseason tournament. It’s not just a women’s basketball thing; men’s basketball has never played in the CIT or the CBI. Also, specifically to women’s basketball, that’s a program that has always competed at the highest level. … I know that some people probably wish that we had done it, but I also know there’s a lot of people that are glad that we didn’t. The number two tournament now for women’s basketball is the WBIT. If we had been offered a bid to the WBIT, we definitely would have accepted that.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown contends the College Basketball Crown has had a deleterious effect on the overall non-NCAA Tournament men’s basketball postseason, noting the number of teams who have chosen not to participate was predictable. “Indiana and Ohio State were among the first few teams out of the NCAA Tournament. … Both declined to participate. So did Rutgers. So did Iowa. So did Northwestern. In order to get just two Big Ten teams, the Crown had to invite Nebraska and USC. These squads missed the Big Ten Tournament, and USC didn’t even have a .500 record. The Big East was able to get Villanova and Georgetown to accept invites, but also had to dig deep to call DePaul, a team that went 4-16 in Big East play and finished five games under .500. The top Big 12 teams to not make the NCAAs, like West Virginia, TCU and Kansas State, are not participating. Instead, the Crown grabbed four of the bottom five teams in the league, including multiple teams with under .500 records.” Meanwhile, “ambitious selection criteria, the complicated calendar of the transfer portal, and competition for teams at the high end (the Crown) and the lower end (the CBI, etc.), led to a chaotic process of trying to nail down invitations and create a compelling bracket” for the NIT. To wit, UC Riverside was committed to play in both the NIT and the CBI, leading to a since-rescinded NIT invite for South Alabama. “It’s a lesson worth remembering, as other college sports events contemplate a post-NCAA world, one where big brands may separate themselves even more from everybody else. At some point, you consolidate yourselves away from the magic, and all you’re left to sell is the on-the-field product.” (link)

Former Arizona Executive Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Erika Barnes has launched EB7 Advisory Group, a “strategic consulting firm elevating collegiate athletics programs and leaders through innovative business strategies, progressive governance solutions, enhancement of the student-athlete experience, and building teamwork cultures.” A press release further explains that “in addition to its current partners, EB7 will work alongside WME Sports, which the Arizona Board of Regents engaged to advise the athletic programs at Arizona State, Arizona, and Northern Arizona on changes to the college landscape in this first-of-its-kind arrangement for the firm. The team will focus on assisting with areas including brand positioning, NIL development, media strategy, and revenue generation.” Barnes: “We are in a pivotal era in collegiate athletics that demands an intentional balance between thinking outside of the box, transforming current models, and celebrating the incredible mission of college athletics. EB7 bridges that gap by bringing the very best thought and action leaders together to build sustainable collegiate athletics conferences and athletics departments that will continue to provide world-class experiences for student-athletes.” (link)

Overall, the tourney averaged 1.027M viewers per game. (link)

The Philadelphia Phillies have filed a lawsuit against Zelus Analytics and its parent company, Teamworks Innovations, alleging the firms “are attempting to sell components of their baseball analytics platform” to the team’s division rivals “in violation of a multimillion-dollar agreement.” According to the Philadelphia Business Journal, the Phillies are suing to block the firms “from selling, licensing or otherwise distributing their analytics platform Titan Intelligence or any of its components to other MLB teams beyond what is permitted in their agreement.” The current deal grants the Phillies an “exclusive license to the use” of the platform “within the National League East division, and the suit claims Zelus and Teamworks “attempted to alter the scope of the exclusivity provisions last year by proposing an amendment that would permit them to sell individual components of the Titan platform to all MLB teams.” (link)
