“There’s a new era of conference commissioners. How long they last, and why they leave, if they leave, will be something to track moving forward,” Sports Illustrated’s Johnson writes, noting the pressure commissioners now face to “deliver immediate financial rewards” is not dissimilar to the pressure coaches face to deliver immediate wins. Johnson goes on to observe Big Ten Commissioner Petitti’s hire “hints at a friction within college sports leadership. What’s the main reason any of these people take these jobs? Is it strictly dealmaking or is it really about effecting long-term change in college athletics and athletes? Some of what you can do boils down to the mandate you have from the school presidents who hire you. It also has to do with college sports’ omnipresent role as not quite professional, but also certainly not purely the high-minded extension of education so many wish it to be.” Petitti would have once been considered an outsider, but one Big Ten administrator says: “wouldn’t call anyone in big media or big-media-adjacent an outsider anymore.” Mountain West Commissioner Nevarez adds: “I can’t think if it’s churn and burn from college athletics or if it’s compounded by COVID that’s created the most significant churn recently. I truly believe COVID has pushed some of those out sooner rather than later.” (link)

Florida State AD Alford continues to push for a change to ACC revenue sharing as league meetings are set for tomorrow on Amelia Island: “I make no bones about it that we’re the top brand in the conference. And when you look at how they measure media contracts, with households, viewership and championships, we’re driving that viewership for our conference at a high rate. There are a couple schools that are really driving that media contract.” Alford points to UCF & how the Big 12’s media deals will get negotiated again before the ACC’s hit the market: “If you look at the revenue projections, they should have a better agreement than we have by going out to market. That means there’s going to be another school in the state that’s going to have a better agreement than Miami (FL) and us. And that’s just not acceptable to us.” More from On3’s Schoffel. (link)

Outgoing Eastern Washington AD Hickey and New Hampshire AD Rich join AthleticDirectorU’s Garcia Cichosz to discuss the similarities in their experiences as ADs, how they knew they were ready for the position, advice they would give to aspiring ADs and more. Hickey, whose first AD stint was at UTSA, says the opportunity aligned with her ambitions and the city provided a good fit. “The potential there was unbelievable because at that time they were the only Division I program in the sixth-largest city in America…and it was a place that we’d always wanted to live.” On what advice she would give herself if she could go back to her first day on the job, Rich says she would explain you don’t have to have the plan fully written out on Day 1, adding: “I think what I would do differently is from the very beginning…is to build in a time, which we’re finally starting to do now, to walk around the hallway and see people because that’s the best part. I’m building these relationships with my staff, who I adore, and getting to know the student-athletes. But it’s hard when I’m behind closed doors all day or across campus. So, I think I would’ve started that sooner.” Full conversation. (link)

A couple of notable comments out of Iowa City, starting with Iowa Football HC Ferentz on sports gambling: “I’d venture to say gambling is a big issue in our whole country right now. I remember back in the ’80s, FBI agents used to come in and talk to our team, and I was amazed. They threw out estimates of what they thought was going on in Iowa City in those times. I read the other day, it’s $2.5 billion last year in our state. So it’s in our face, it’s accessible to pretty much everybody, and we’ll just see what all comes out of this. I don’t really pay attention to gambling, but I’ve learned a lot in the last (few) days.” Hawkeyes Men’s Basketball HC McCaffery on other marketplace challenges: “(Recruiting) has changed dramatically, in particular in our sport, as it relates to NIL and the transfer portal because now it has become pay-to-play. That is unfortunate, but it is reality. And I think a lot of people don’t truly understand what that means. They think NIL is a big negative thing. It’s a positive thing, because it enables our student-athletes to connect with the business community in ways that were not allowed before. The difficulty is when the transfer pool was instituted at the same time, it became pay-for-play. The transfer portal is the NCAA’s mistake in declaring every athlete a free agent at every point in time. It’s not how it works in any other sports entity. In the NFL, MLB, the NBA, the players collectively bargain with the owners. I think we all know and understand that when the NCAA men’s basketball tournament and TV package gets in the billion dollars range, it’s only fair for the players to share in some of that compensation. They should have been more proactive, and they were not. That’s on them.” (link)

Extra Points’ Brown explores LSU Football staffer/former Nevada HC Polian’s decision to take the AD job at John Carroll (DIII), and Polian himself tells Brown that “I thought [this kind of transition] would be later, to be very honest, and that was something I had to work through. I’m 48 years old. … I thought I might shift to administration seven, eight years down the road. But I leaned on a guy named Dr. Kevin White, who has been kind of my Godfather in this business. And he told me, ‘Listen, you love the place, and there’s no guarantee that this job is going to be open again anytime soon.’ Polian also notes he ran the idea past fellow alumni, such as Houston Texans GM Caserio and former Baltimore Ravens OC Roman, saying: “‘Hey, listen, I’m thinking about maybe going back to Carroll and getting out of this rat race,’ I expected them to tell me that I’m nuts. But across the board, they said ‘that’s awesome.' I’m not whining about this. Guys at this level get paid a lot of money. But there’s a tradeoff. It is incredibly difficult right now, at the SEC level, to be an effective P5 football coach, recruiter, and also the spouse and the parent that you need to be.” Polian goes on to say coaching college football has become increasingly transactional, and “that’s not my Why. … If it was, I would have simply gone to the NFL, like my dad and my brothers. My Why is centered around relationships and the impact we as coaches can have on young people’s lives.” Lots more from Polian, including his explanation for why he believes student-athletes “deserve some sort of compensation.” (link)

ECU AD Gilbert rattles off a laundry list of accomplishments for the Pirates this year, many of which have already been covered in this space, but some that haven’t: Men’s Soccer’s & Baseball’s best-attended games in the history of their current stadiums, Men’s Basketball seeing a 25% spike in YoY attendance, Women’s Basketball up an impressive 62.6% in attendance compared to last season and on social media “registered more than 760,00 interactions since August 2022 on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.” More. Austin Peay has extended its partnership with Collegiate Sports Connect. Govs AD Harrison: “To create the best experience possible for all of our student-athletes at Austin Peay, we must hire and retain the right people who are committed to the ‘Total Gov Concept.’ Our continuing partnership with Connect allows us to be proactive and efficient while identifying and recruiting individuals that are helping us level up in Clarksville.” (link)

With BYU joining the Big 12 this year, Action Network’s McMurphy reports the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl, which is contracted to select the Cougars in 2023, now becomes a Big 12 bowl and will feature a Pac-12 team, as well. “That gives Big 12 seven guaranteed bowls in addition to any CFB Playoff/New Year’s 6 bids it earns.” (link)

Meta Director of Sports Partnerships Sethi joins NCAA correspondent Katz to talk about how student-athletes are using their social media platforms to share their stories and drive the conversation around mental health. Sethi explains the importance of “getting some of these topics out in the open because that’s not only healthy for these student-athletes to share their stories, it’s incredibly impactful for their fans to hear those stories as well. How many of those fans are experiencing that even if they’re not playing in college? Maybe they’re playing youth sports. Maybe they’re struggling in the classroom with some of those same topics. One of the great things about NIL is it’s not just about trying to get everybody to make a million dollars during their college career. It can be about you having a community or a cause that you care about and being able to participate in this era and leverage your community…to drive support for those communities and causes, and mental health is clearly near or at the top of the list when it comes to things we’re all thinking about.” (link)

Yesterday on the Paul Finebaum Show, Alabama AD Byrne opened up about the change in Baseball leadership in Tuscaloosa: “So what I tried to think back is, anytime you go through a coaching hire, Paul, you try to look under the hood and get as much information as you can. As you can imagine, there was never any sign by anybody of anything like that. And once we learned about it, we dealt with it. We took it seriously from the get go and made the challenging decision. … Obviously as an athletic director, one of the things you’re judged on is your coaching hires. And as much as, using a baseball term, as much you want to bat 1.000, you’re not going to. Coach Bohannon — our program’s better. A lot better.” (link)

Wright State AD Grant on the “P.S.A (people first, student second, athlete third)” culture he’s established in Dayton: “I don’t like our business in a lot of ways. Many [athletic] programs that achieve high levels of success are not doing it the right way. They are the epitome of winning at all costs, and I don’t feel like that’s the right way to do things at all. [...] Parents have trusted us with their kids to help make a better life for them and prepare them for when they leave. That was sort of where the P.S.A. mission was born. [...] I remember thinking, if this doesn’t work, and we’re not successful, at least I can lay my head on my pillow at night and know we did it the right way. This is a business where very few people doggedly stick to their principles and core values. Ultimately, we are an athletic department, and if this doesn’t work, I’ll walk out with my pride knowing I didn’t sacrifice my principles.” Lots more on the inner workings of P.S.A. (link)

Connect/MB Sports’ Banker checks in with Huron Sports Consulting Managing Director Walsh, Huron Higher Ed Consulting Director Nevala and former Penn State AD/Huron Strategic Adviser Barbour to discuss some of the complexities facing college sports right now and what strategies they’re discussing with ADs, what resources they are able to provide to overcome some of those challenges. Some specific topics include the opportunities in women’s sports, the role of athletics when it comes to enrollment and how the Transformation Committee’s recommendations will impact Olympic sports. On the latter, Nevala says to identify the gaps and prioritize investments. One thing Huron always falls back on, he continues, is that the nature of college athletics is to create a great campus experience which hopefully leads to a level of engagement for student-athletes that become alumni. Lots more in the full interview now live on Connect. (link)

Collegiate Consulting outlines the 55-page study it provided to Western Illinois that preceded the decision for the Leathernecks to move to the OVC. “The study ascertained, WIU was in alignment to the OVC with regard to institutional fit, sports sponsorship, geography/travel and athletic financial aid. Operating budgets for the men’s program were in the top-third when compared to the OVC, however, 7-of-9 women’s programs fell below the OVC average. In addition, Collegiate Consulting compared WIU’s football expenses in the Missouri Valley Football Conference to the OVC. The study illustrated WIU’s alignment with the majority of the OVC expense metric comparisons.” (link)

The Athletic’s Ubben catches up with nine high school coaches of top football prospects in Colorado, Texas and Florida to hear their thoughts on Colorado Football HC Sanders’ approach to roster management, and McKinney (TX) High School HC Shavers says: “Deion is going to be able to do things that most coaches are not able to do and get away with saying things that most coaches may not be able to say and survive because he’s Prime. His way of doing it is unique, but it’s provoking change. They’ve done a good job of making Colorado a sought-after place.” Valor Christian (CO) HC McGatlin tells Ubben that if his son were being recruited by the Buffs, “it would be hard to send him to CU because I don’t want them to have that experience. To me, it would be a little scary.” Lakeland (FL) HC Frazier believes that “it’ll go both ways. There will be a prospect or two who it rubs the wrong way, but there will be some guys who prefer that and want that upfront communication.” Regardless, Frazier says a “Colorado offer is a big deal now to these kids. It was nothing last year. It’s a big deal now. That goes to show how great a job he’s done marketing himself.” It’s McGatlin who sums up what appears to be the general conclusion about Coach Prime’s approach and possibly his tenure in Boulder: “It’s intriguing to see. Maybe he’s onto something. Or not.” (link)

“That’s not fog. That’s a cloud of grill smoke hanging over the outfield.” ESPN’s McGee explores the culture of SEC baseball from the cowbells to the “shirtless professors reading Chaucer down the third-base line on a sunny Music City spring afternoon.” Beyond creating fun atmospheres for fans, the buzz that surrounds SEC baseball also makes the schools in-demand destinations for players, as LSU pitcher Hurd, who transferred from UCLA, explains: “The experience of these ballparks, ours here at The Box and on the road, is why I am here, plain and simple. This is no slight to where I came from and some of the amazing places I was able to visit during my time as a Bruin, but all over the nation, players are constantly talking about these SEC atmospheres.” Meanwhile, McGee points out that “there are only four purpose-built, on-campus college baseball stadiums in Division I that seat more than 10,000. All are in the SEC West. There are only nine that can hold more than 7,000 fans and all but two of those are in the SEC, with one of those — Texas's Disch-Falk Field – slated to join the conference as soon as the 2024 baseball season concludes.” Former Tennessee outfielder Gilbert, who currently plays in the Houston Astros’ organization adds: “The fans at every school, they've done the research. They know where you're from, what classes you're taking, your parents' names, all of it. You want to be angry at them, but honestly, it's more impressive than anything else." Lots more. (link)

Must Read for Marketers: The popularity of NFL schedule release videos is reaching a fever pitch, and SBJ’s Fischer contends they serve a purpose beyond entertainment. The schedule release, he argues “triggers” the several significant business activities: namely, single-game ticket sales, logistics and gambling. Regarding single-game ticket sales, Fischer explains: “This has been a major point of emphasis for NFL HQ, which has pushed teams to be more strategic and aggressive in how they price and market their remaining inventory. None of that can happen until there are dates and times set. Fans can’t evaluate options until they know how a game fits into their lives.” As it relates to logistics, he notes that an NFL team “needs to book between 150-200 hotel rooms and meeting space in eight or nine cities, often during the fall convention season and highly competitive winter holiday travel weekends. Operations teams start making calls within minutes of seeing the schedule, and prices go up with every passing day. Most operations experts hope to present a final proposal to senior leadership by the weekend and negotiate final terms next week. ‘Even at this stage, things are an elevated cost in the planning schedule,’ said one NFL team exec, who called today a ‘material’ event.” (link)
