The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner characterizes the current state of Stanford’s athletic department as a “a rudderless ship with budget problems, performance issues and embarrassing behavior courtesy of the football coach. All of which serves as an indictment of [former AD Bernard] Muir’s tenure and a monumental challenge for a certain former quarterback with substantial authority and influence. While not in charge of the athletic department writ large, [Football GM Andrew] Luck is responsible for the football program. He is [Troy] Taylor’s boss and has a direct reporting line to [President Jonathan] Levin. And fixing Stanford athletics starts with fixing Stanford football.” Wilner goes on to submit that “above all, Stanford cares about its money and its image, and the latter took a gut punch Wednesday with ESPN’s report [on the alleged behavior of Football HC Troy Taylor]. But if we assume he’s retained through the spring, Taylor will face a make-or-break season seemingly without the talent needed to navigate a schedule that includes Brigham Young, SMU, Florida State, Miami and Notre Dame. Under normal circumstances, the athletic director is charged with evaluating the football coach. But Stanford hasn’t bothered to name an interim, much less started the search for Muir’s permanent replacement. … With the advent of the transfer portal and the legalization of NIL and the coming era of revenue-sharing — changes that have forced the university to reassess what it means to support college sports — Stanford’s climb out of the gutter is that much more difficult.” (link)

Former NCAA CMO Brian Hainline and Big Ten CMO/USCAH President/CEO James Borchers join Tulane Sports Law Director Gabe Feldman to discuss the autonomy of medical professionals in college sports, and Borchers explains that one issue facing college athletics is that “athletic healthcare has been delivered in environments that may not have been consistent with what we see in other healthcare environments – hospitals, clinics and those sorts of things – and so the reporting lines of individuals in those situations often times have gone to some interesting spots. And those folks may or may not have any expertise in medical issues and being able to make those sorts of decisions, but there's pressure – especially for athletic trainers, I would say – that their jobs could be on the line if they're in disagreement, for example, with someone who has another opinion or who really needs a player back or the team is really counting on someone. And then the physicians are part of that now…and I think that healthcare team and thinking about how that team’s organized and where they report is one of the big issues here.” Hainline points out that one way to help ensure coaches are on the same page with medical professionals is to show them the data because “coaches are data-driven. … When you show them data that when you take better care of athletes, when the medical decisions are the right decisions for that athlete, when you're taking care of mental health, that you actually not only are improving the well-being of the athlete, you're improving performance. That’s what they really care about. I believe they care about the human being and human development, but from a win-loss point of view, they care about performance. And the best medical care, the data tells us, unequivocally leads to the best performance.” Full podcast. (link)

WAC Senior Assoc. Commissioner for Basketball and Conference Services Drew Speraw sits down with Connect's Bryan Fischer to talk about his role as a member of the Women’s Basketball Oversight Committee, how conversations started with awarding units, the trajectory of the game, the potential for tournament expansion and more. Regarding whether expanding March Madness would likely lead to more access being given to Power 4 teams at the expense of others, Speraw explains: “I think it's likely right. At the end of the day when you look at the way the selection committee operates and how teams are evaluated, I think there's obviously a potential where you see teams last year – like maybe Indiana State, who who didn't make it – obviously you would expect if there was an expanded tournament that they would be a part of that. So it doesn't necessarily mean that all those [bids] would go to A4 [teams]...but they certainly are going to have an inside track at probably having strengthened resumes and those types of things from being in the conferences and playing the games they do. How much does that affect teams in the WAC? To be determined.” More on Connect. (link)

McNeese State Men’s Basketball HC Will Wade has “leaned into the blunt truth (what a concept!) and it's helped his McNeese Cowboys make history in the process,” according to CBS’ Matt Norlander, who notes Wade is in line to be the next coach at NC State, and “we only know this because he hasn't tried for a second to make anyone think otherwise.” In fact, Wade said yesterday that "we're not worried about any of that stuff. I mean, here's the thing: We can sit here and lie about it, but it is what it is. Our guys aren't worried about it, I ain't worried about it, none of our administration's worried about it, nobody's worried about it. We've been honest with everybody. It's great! Keep winning! Keep going!" Cowboys senior guard Christian Shumate adds: "I think when you're in the loop and both ends are transparent about things, there's not too much room for conflict. Everybody is aware of everything that's going on, and when there's a clear understanding, everybody keeps the same angle in the front of mind. We'll worry about all of that stuff later." Wade also pointed out that his situation is hardly unique and that "there are five coaches right now negotiating with other schools! I mean, c'mon, it’s true! Villanova is trying to hire a coach out of the NCAA Tournament right now!" Also from Wade: “Shoot, half the kids I recruit, the goal is to go Power 5 after this year. Some of you guys can go with me. We all know what’s up. For our guys, this was great for them. They’ve got a lot of schools in their DMs looking to pick them up, pay them.” (link, link)

With Power 4 and top mid-major men’s basketball programs set to have $3M available in rev-share, “blue bloods are preparing to spend upwards of $10M,” according to On3’s Pete Nakos, who is told by a source that “budgets are way up. Dollars are way up. Just the overall money, every starter now for a Power Four team is making $500K.” As for who will spend the most, one collective operator tells Nakos the “top of the Power 4 is going to be north of $10M easily, probably closer to $12M or even $14M. Arkansas hit $10M last year. I know that there are a couple of schools that have that target in sight and a couple that think that they’re gonna need to go, maybe even a million or two above that. I’ve heard lots of conversations around the ballpark of those numbers. The piece they’re going to have to figure out is rev-share. They’re only going to be $3M, so they’re going to have to go out and do a lot of hunting.” Another source remarks: “I know Kansas is going to step up their game considerably because he’s very aware of what his delta is on the market, even though he said it and then he got trumped last year. There are a couple of schools in the state of North Carolina that are quickly reevaluating and preparing and understanding what their number is going to be. There are a couple of schools there that have got a lot of people paying attention to what their basketball numbers should be.” More. (link)

Sportico’s Jacob Feldman explains that YouTube TV’s multiview “is actually a composite feed of the combined games—one video rather than multiple. YouTube TV opted for this method so that the feature would be available on devices with a range of computing power (with typical options like ‘decreased’ broadcast delay still available too), but it means that creating each multiview combination puts additional strain on YouTube TV’s servers. … Adding CBS games to the mix is particularly taxing, given YouTube TV is actually serving roughly 210 different versions of CBS and other local stations, divided by broadcast markets. What might look like a single multiview offering is in fact more than 200. All of which is to say, even a web giant like Google-owned YouTube is not ready to serve a completely unlimited array of multiview selections. At least not yet.” As far as how the games are selected for each multiview panel, YouTube TV Senior Product Manager Brianne Mirecki explains that a team of sports fans armed with usage data (as well as feedback on social media) helps make the determination. “We have to strike the right balance between what viewers want with our capacity.” For the first two rounds, men’s and women’s tourney games will be offered separately, but starting with the Sweet 16 there will be options that include contests from both tournaments. Mirecki also notes YouTube TV is focused on improving its backend tech to increase the number of multiview options that can be offered simultaneously “so that viewers will have more choices this upcoming NFL season.” (link)

ESPN reported collecting 24.4M brackets this week, up 10% from last year, and SBJ’s Bill King observes that while “plenty of them came from fans who are below the legal betting age and from states that haven’t legalized, there are still millions from those able to sign up for accounts and place bets.” VP of ESPN Bet and ESPN Fantasy Mike Morrison tells KIng: “We love it. It’s just really a nice feature, smartly connected to your pick to win the tournament. It seamlessly integrates with the ESPN Bet app. It took a lot of effort for the teams on both sides to build that. This is just the beginning of what the opportunity is there. We worked hard to get that in place for the tournament this year. It’s a great example of what we can do that’s unique to the ESPN ecosystem and to this partnership.” The network also ramped up integrations across its platforms in the days leading up to the tournament, and Morrison notes: “We look at this gaming ecosystem as all one thing. Tournament Challenge is a national business available in every state, every city, all over. Betting is available only in certain states. So we want to be able to deliver an experience across the whole gaming spectrum, either directly or through partners, because we understand this is part of the fan behavior that’s developing. Over time we’ll be able to figure out how those things interconnect. But we certainly expect them to, and we want to build an ecosystem that enables that, reduces the friction and continues to make that a stronger and stronger experience.” (link)

High-profile Mater Dei High School (CA) and Playfly have agreed to a 10-year multimedia rights agreement through 2034-35. Playfly Sports Properties President Christy Hedgpeth: “At Playfly, we believe in the power of high school sports to connect communities and drive meaningful impact. Mater Dei’s tradition of excellence, both academically and athletically, offers a full portfolio of compelling assets we can deliver to brands. This transformational collaboration is a testament to the growing opportunities in high school athletics.” The deal is the first-ever multimedia rights agreement between an individual high school and a third-party partner. Nike reported Q3 revenue of $11.27B, which represents a 9% decline from the previous year’s quarter; however, the revenue still beat Wall Street’s expectation of $11.03B, and the company’s earnings per share of $0.54 nearly doubled the $0.29 estimate. Greater China was the worst performing region with sales down 18%, while North America, which is the largest market at $4.9B, was down just 4%. (link)

During time with the media yesterday at the NCAA Tournament, Maryland Men’s Basketball HC Kevin Willard shed more light on the reports of Terps AD Damon Evans heading to SMU & the potential impact to his program: “Obviously it's difficult right now because I think we know (Evans') situation. He's probably going to SMU, so it's kind of tough to negotiate with somebody that's maybe not here. But I need to make fundamental changes to the program. That's what I'm focused on right now. That's why probably a deal hasn't got done because I want to see -- I need to see fundamental changes done. I want this program to be great. I want it to be the best in the country, I want to win a national championship, but there's things that need to change. When you're at a place for three years and you put your heart and soul into it, you kind of sit there and say okay, wait a second for us to be really successful X, Y and Z needs to change and first and foremost, I need to make sure that we are where we are with NIL and rev share is not where we've been with NIL over the past two years. We've been one of the worst, if not lowest, in the NIL in the last two years. So that's first and foremost.” (link)

UConn Men’s Basketball HC Dan Hurley says he’s been talking to former Duke boss Mike Krzyzewski about the potential merger of the Big East & ACC for hoops: “He’s texted me that, we’ve talked about that. I’ve mentioned it to people at the Big East, I’ve talked to Dave (Benedict, UConn athletic director) about it. [...] I mean, (a merger) would just make tons of sense … and obviously I think the basketball programs in the ACC could really use that. Syracuse has been hurt by losing the Garden, Pitt’s been hurt by losing the Garden, BC, obviously there’s been major advantages from a football standpoint. I hope I’m not speaking out of turn for those folks. But how cool would it be to find a way to get Syracuse back in some type of ACC-Big East Consortium Tournament.” (link); Meanwhile on the same topic, former Villanova HC Jay Wright tells Puck’s John Ourand: “Eventually somebody’s going to take a basketball school into a football conference and create a model where the basketball school gets less of the television revenue, obviously, because football brings in the most. But they’re still worthy of being in that league because of the level of their basketball program. Those things are viable down the road when this split occurs, which I think is inevitable.” (link)

“Is this the year to take a significant step to permanently place Texas Tech athletics at the top of the Big 12? I would say we've taken a significant step there. We need to have a great run in March, and we need to get to Arlington and play for the Big 12 Conference football championship. That's the next step, I think, to solidify ourselves in that top spot in the Big 12. We've got to get to Arlington and win that football game.” That’s Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt as the Red Raiders have strung together a number of high-profile competitive successes, thanks in part to the inflow of significant NIL dollars. More Hocutt: “We're just going to continue to be nimble, willing to change and be proactive and play offense and to be able to invest in our programs, but specifically and strategically in the programs that have a chance to significantly elevate our brand just beyond the Big 12 Conference, and that's football and our basketball program.” (link)

West Virginia AD Wren Baker comments on West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey’s legal push after the Mountaineers Men’s Basketball squad was left out of March Madness: “We were not consulted. I’ve made my thoughts clear on the process. Athletic directors don’t even control presidents on their campus. Half of the time, they don’t even control their coaches. So, I definitely was not in control of that decision. I do appreciate the governor and the attorney general’s both passion for our state in wanting to defend West Virginia.” (link)

Adweek’s Jason Notte examines how the Big East’s ties to New York elevate the league’s overall brand, especially when it comes to holding its basketball championships at Madison Square Garden. Commissioner Val Ackerman reveals that “there were questions, candidly, early on about whether the new Big East would be able to create the same excitement at MSG, would be able to draw the same number of fans, would be able to replicate the magic moments that the Big East Tournament had become known for over many decades. We didn’t quite sell out in the first year, but in the years that followed, the tournament has just gotten progressively stronger, which speaks to the sellouts now [and] the increase in ticket revenue as we’ve been able to thoughtfully raise prices to reflect demand.” Ackerman also notes the league holds numerous events in addition to the games that “have become points of intersection for school personnel and a way for us to engage with writers, fans, and our marketing partners. As long as there are hours in a day, we’re going to continue to figure out how we can use the tournament itself, the games themselves, as a launching pad to do more to cement that connection with New York City.” Campus presidents are also recognizing the value of having ties to New York and the alumni bases there, as Ackerman explains: “They see the ability to be in New York and to play at the Garden, in particular, as a key element of our brand, part of the DNA of the conference. We’ve got five schools in the Midwest, and I’ve had their men’s basketball coaches say to me, ‘If we were in Chicago, we would probably send 5,000 fans. But don’t do anything…don’t change it.’” (link)

As the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament kicks into high gear today, The Athletic’s Chantel Jennings and now-NBC’s Nicole Auerbach examine the current “crisis moment” in women’s basketball officiating. The two conducted “more than 50 interviews with NCAA sources, administrators, coaches, players, commissioners and more than a dozen DI current and former women’s basketball officials, many of whom requested anonymity to speak freely. Stakeholders within the sport painted a bleak picture: Currently, three people control more than 75% of the regular season officiating jobs; officiating styles are inconsistent across conferences; the system lacks a formal developmental framework and security for officials; and there has been limited transparency on almost every level.” NCAA VP of Women’s Basketball Lynn Holzman: “As we’ve continued to see the game grow, officiating is one of those areas that we have to continue to be very attentive to and make sure that, within the system that exists, we are providing the opportunities for the officials to grow and develop and get direct feedback, and then there’s accountability for that through the levers that exist for the NCAA. But it is a collaborative effort with us and the conferences.” Among many high-profile officiating errors, Jennings and Auerbach point out that the officiating in the 2023 LSU-Iowa national title game “didn’t just draw outrage from fans and media critiques; it also prompted the NCAA to fast-track an NCAA Tournament officiating review, known as the Pictor Report,” which had been scheduled for the following year. The results of that report were never made available to the public or broadly shown to coaches and stakeholders, and Connecticut HC Geno Auriemma says it’s “disconcerting to know that whatever information was gleaned from that (report) has been kept out of the hands of coaches, athletic directors and anyone else. I’d be curious as to why.” Holzman explains the report was not published publicly because “this was something that I asked to be done for the benefit of myself as I lead and direct in these areas.” Lots more, including this from one high-ranking administrator: “This is a five-to-10-year fix, and we’re nowhere close to starting that.” Lots more. Washington State Deputy AD Ike Ukaegbu sits down with Connect's Steph Garcia Cichosz for a conversation about purpose, passion and impact. Ukaegbu offers insight into his process for evaluating roles and opportunities, shares lessons from his professional mentors and discusses the unique experiences of being part of searches for both a university president and football head coach. Ukaegbu also discusses prioritizing family while pursuing career goals, the nuances of serving as a football sport administrator, and why compliance can be a strategic path towards the big chair. Ukaegbu: "Compliance is the main area that exposes you to the roots and the transformation of everything that's changing in today's college athletic landscape - whether it's NIL, the transfer portal, conference realignment, all the athlete well-being issues... Compliance is probably the only area in the athletics department that works with every unit and every sport in the department." Ukaegbu goes on to note that he saw firsthand what football success did for TCU and Boise State during his time at both institutions, specifically “when Boise State won the Fiesta Bowl what it did for enrollment, when TCU won the Rose Bowl what it did for the number of applications which, I believe, the next year may have doubled or something like that. So, football success really impacts more than just the football program. It impacts the entire [university] and your institutional brand.” Full Q&A on Connect. (link)

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order directing Department of Education Secretary Linda McMahon to close down the department “to the maximum extent appropriate and permitted by law.” While Trump lacks the authority to shut the department down entirely, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Thursday that the aim is to reduce the size of the agency but still administer “critical functions,” such as enforcing civil rights laws, issuing student loans and disbursing Pell Grants. National Association of College and University Business Officers President Kara Freeman insists the order will add “to the turbulence colleges and universities are experiencing and the uncertainty students and families are facing at this critical time in the academic year,” adding: “Most troubling is that these collective actions involving the department could cause enough confusion to discourage students and families from considering a path to college.” While Congresswoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) believes the GOP is close to getting enough votes in the House and is hopeful about finding 60 votes in the Senate, Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) suggests the votes won’t be there: “Donald Trump knows perfectly well he can’t abolish the Department of Education without Congress—but he understands that if you fire all the staff and smash it to pieces, you might get a similar, devastating result.” (link)
