SMU officially announces the hire of Maryland AD Damon Evans. Board of Trustees Chair David Miller: “Our goal was to find a leader who shared our vision for the future of SMU Athletics - one of continued and even greater national prominence. We found that in a world-class athletic director with experience leading in both the Big 10 and SEC conferences, and who will bring bold, innovative ideas to our campus. Damon has led two top-tier athletics programs, and now he will lead a third. Damon’s knowledge, experience and extensive contacts in intercollegiate athletics will be invaluable in leading our Athletics program to even greater success in the ACC while strategically navigating the evolving NIL landscape.” (link); Meanwhile, Evans in a release at Maryland: “I am fiercely proud of what we have accomplished in my 10 years here, particularly the last seven as the Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics. With your generous support and the support of an amazing athletic department staff, we have won 49 B1G conference championships and seven national championships. We have built amazing facilities for our student-athletes, including Jones-Hill House, performance centers for baseball and softball and a new track at Ludwig Field. We installed state-of-the-art videoboards at SECU Stadium and Xfinity Center, opened the stunning Maryland Club and this summer we will open a gleaming new home for Maryland Basketball, the Barry Gossett Basketball Performance Center.” Senior Deputy AD/COO Colleen Sorem has been named Interim AD in College Park. (link); CollegeAD reports Evans owes Maryland a $500K buyout. (link)

On the Pony Express’ Billy Embody reports Oregon AD Rob Mullens also got into “serious discussions” with SMU before deciding to stay in Eugene. More from Embody: “A trio of names that were up-and-coming and were no secret to industry sources as getting looked at were Air Force AD Nathan Pine, UConn AD David Benedict, and Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey. All three are very different and all three haven’t worked in the power conference ranks. That said, Benedict and Dickey emerged as some of the top options thanks to their interviews. Funny enough, Chris Del Conte leans on Dickey for plenty of his ideas for Texas athletics. Benedict’s work at Auburn and at UConn were eyebrow raising for football and basketball, respectively.” (link)

New Saint Francis AD Jim Brazill Q&As with the university’s student newspaper. On the biggest challenges for the Red Flash: “It’s definitely the transfer portal. You might get a student-athlete (at Saint Francis) who is on the bubble. Essentially, we become a farm system because we will take student-athletes and develop them academically and athletically. We get them ready and the next thing you know, they have a good season and somebody else comes in and scoops them up.” As for conference realignment & the Northeast Conference: “I think it’s stable right now. They (NEC officials) have been in talks with some other schools about joining the conference. I know the number they like to be at is 10. I believe they are working on that. [...] I don’t know that there’s a ‘natural fit’ for us out there. You’ve got the Patriot League, but I’m not sure that one would be a fit for us. I don’t think there’s one out there right now.” (link)

The UCLA women’s basketball team traveled 36,116 miles in the air this season, which is tops in the country according to The Athletic’s Chantel Jennings, who reports that distance “equates to, roughly, one and a half trips around the world.” To help the team prepare, Bruins HC Cori Close scheduled several eastbound trips in the past few years to get a sense of what the travel rigor would look like and avoid potential pitfalls. Two years ago, they played at South Carolina — a 2,130-mile flight — and flew in the day before the game and left immediately after. A Sweet 16 flight last season to Albany on a red-eye that stopped for fuel proved small jets were a no-go for the upcoming Big Ten season. Close: “It was: How can we figure out all the things that are pulling on these kids, and what are all the things that can be interferences on the road? And how do you mitigate those within as much proactive planning as you can?” Meanwhile, Jennings points out that a Big Ten rule requires teams to spend two days of preparation in between games. “This is of little concern for Midwest-based programs — they fly home between games. But a return cross-country flight isn’t an option for UCLA, USC, Oregon and Washington, so in addition to seeing new conference arenas and practice facilities this season, the Bruins also toured Midwest towns.” Close also says she met with dietitians, trainers and sleep specialists to maximize the team’s performance: “I’ve been more reliant on the science of load in how we practice. We just made some tweaks the last couple weeks about things that we’re just not going to do live anymore, to sort of minimize some of the wear and tear.” Lots more. (link)

The Indianapolis Star’s Zach Osterman and Michael Niziolek peel back the curtain on Indiana’s Men’s Basketball HC search and note that “with the help of search firm TurnkeyZRG — and in the interests of respecting both his and other programs’ ongoing seasons — [Hoosiers AD Scott] Dolson kept a profile so demonstrably low that even in the final hours of the search, college basketball power brokers still considered themselves so in the dark on IU’s intentions they wondered if Dolson had a ‘mystery candidate’ waiting in the wings.” Most of the candidates were active college coaches, and Dolson “let them dictate when they felt comfortable talking about IU’s coaching vacancy all while doing background work that proved crucial to the process,” according to Osterman and Niziolek. That background work included a study led by Hoosiers Director of Strategic Communications John Decker, who conducted an analysis of coaching profiles. “Indiana asked, for example, whether a head coach successful in a certain job had inherited any of that success, or built it from scratch. … Decker’s number crunching picked up on the fact that [former Hoosiers HC Archie] Miller had more or less sustained success at Dayton, rather than built it — Brian Gregory won 97 games in his final four seasons coaching the Flyers, before handing off to Miller, who won 90 in his first four years there. Conversely, Hoosiers HC Darian DeVries won 95 games in his first four years at Drake, which had won just 40 games in the four years before he arrived. The study also found that DeVries has a career .650 winning percentage in games decided by five points or less, and Dolson notes: “As we looked around the country, that's something that's really significant with winning programs. All that stuff mattered.” Lots more. (link)

It was the most-watched NCAA Tournament first round opening day ever on CBS and TNT, with an average of 9.1M viewers across TBS, CBS, TNT and truTV, up 6%. The “hate” the Duke men’s basketball team inspires is part of what drives ratings for CBS and Turner each March, according to Sportico’s Anthony Crupi, who points out the Blue Devils participated in both of the most-watched title games going back to 2008. The 2015 matchup against Wisconsin drew 28.3M viewers while the 2010 title tilt with Butler brought in 23.9M. Going back further, Crupi notes the “1992 Duke-Michigan bout remains the second most-watched college basketball game on the books behind only the Bird-Magic showcase in 1979, averaging 34.3M viewers. Indeed, Michigan’s share of top 20 games is second only to Duke’s, as the maize-and-blue have appeared in four of the most-watched broadcasts of all time to Duke’s half-dozen.” Should Duke fail to advance to the Final Four, Crupi observes that “you can’t swing a Wildcat by the tail this year without hitting a blue blood. Kentucky’s a bit of a long shot (30-1) to play Alamo-adjacent basketball in a few weeks, but it always draws a crowd, and Duke’s archnemesis North Carolina is already making the nay-sayers and whingers look a bit dim after its 95-68 demolition of San Diego State.” Furthermore, a “deep run by Rick Pitino’s zillionaire-enhanced Red Storm unlocks the cheat code for a home market that features 7.49M TV households, which accounts for 6% of the entire national base.” (link)

Former ESPN President/Meadowlark Media Co-Founder John Skipper joined the Pable Torre Finds Out show and has some predictions regarding March Madness: “Look, colleges, athletic departments, college presidents have demonstrated that to get more money, they will do pretty much anything. I don’t know why there’s already discussions with SEC and Big Ten sort of bullying into ‘we’re going to get more guaranteed slots in the College Football Playoff.’ So they got the mindset already that, that we’re going to keep other people out. Why wouldn't you create four super conferences — 64 teams — and that's your governing body? ... Who else has a governing body which is an independent third party? ... Why don't four college conferences go, 'We're going to do our own basketball tournament, 64 teams. We'll sell that for $1.5 billion dollars, and we'll divide that among our schools, and we'll further separate the haves from the have-nots. … And forget for a minute whether it’s a better aesthetic event. What do you think any of the college commissioners and presidents care? They want more money. Haven’t we talked on this show over and over? The fans are never considered. The individual conferences end up getting 35 million, 40, 50, 60 million. If you could look at splitting up a billion and a half, that’s $375 million distributed to 16 schools. So I’m not suggesting I think it’s more poetic or more interesting. I’m just suggesting the economic value of that $375. I can’t quite do the math with 16, but it’s 20. It’s close to $25 million a school.” (link)

The University of California will pause all hiring systemwide and make additional cuts to maintenance, business travel and other areas in response to threats from the Trump administration to slash federal funding for universities. UC President Michael Drake says the cutbacks will impact nearly every aspect of operations at all 10 campuses. “The new administration in Washington, D.C., has announced a number of executive orders and proposed policy changes, including ones that threaten funding for lifesaving research, patient care, and education support.” Coupled with preparations the university was already making in response to a proposed $396.6M state funding cut, Drake says he and chancellors were ready for “significant financial challenges ahead.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner characterizes the current state of Stanford’s athletic department as a “a rudderless ship with budget problems, performance issues and embarrassing behavior courtesy of the football coach. All of which serves as an indictment of [former AD Bernard] Muir’s tenure and a monumental challenge for a certain former quarterback with substantial authority and influence. While not in charge of the athletic department writ large, [Football GM Andrew] Luck is responsible for the football program. He is [Troy] Taylor’s boss and has a direct reporting line to [President Jonathan] Levin. And fixing Stanford athletics starts with fixing Stanford football.” Wilner goes on to submit that “above all, Stanford cares about its money and its image, and the latter took a gut punch Wednesday with ESPN’s report [on the alleged behavior of Football HC Troy Taylor]. But if we assume he’s retained through the spring, Taylor will face a make-or-break season seemingly without the talent needed to navigate a schedule that includes Brigham Young, SMU, Florida State, Miami and Notre Dame. Under normal circumstances, the athletic director is charged with evaluating the football coach. But Stanford hasn’t bothered to name an interim, much less started the search for Muir’s permanent replacement. … With the advent of the transfer portal and the legalization of NIL and the coming era of revenue-sharing — changes that have forced the university to reassess what it means to support college sports — Stanford’s climb out of the gutter is that much more difficult.” (link)

Former NCAA CMO Brian Hainline and Big Ten CMO/USCAH President/CEO James Borchers join Tulane Sports Law Director Gabe Feldman to discuss the autonomy of medical professionals in college sports, and Borchers explains that one issue facing college athletics is that “athletic healthcare has been delivered in environments that may not have been consistent with what we see in other healthcare environments – hospitals, clinics and those sorts of things – and so the reporting lines of individuals in those situations often times have gone to some interesting spots. And those folks may or may not have any expertise in medical issues and being able to make those sorts of decisions, but there's pressure – especially for athletic trainers, I would say – that their jobs could be on the line if they're in disagreement, for example, with someone who has another opinion or who really needs a player back or the team is really counting on someone. And then the physicians are part of that now…and I think that healthcare team and thinking about how that team’s organized and where they report is one of the big issues here.” Hainline points out that one way to help ensure coaches are on the same page with medical professionals is to show them the data because “coaches are data-driven. … When you show them data that when you take better care of athletes, when the medical decisions are the right decisions for that athlete, when you're taking care of mental health, that you actually not only are improving the well-being of the athlete, you're improving performance. That’s what they really care about. I believe they care about the human being and human development, but from a win-loss point of view, they care about performance. And the best medical care, the data tells us, unequivocally leads to the best performance.” Full podcast. (link)

WAC Senior Assoc. Commissioner for Basketball and Conference Services Drew Speraw sits down with Connect's Bryan Fischer to talk about his role as a member of the Women’s Basketball Oversight Committee, how conversations started with awarding units, the trajectory of the game, the potential for tournament expansion and more. Regarding whether expanding March Madness would likely lead to more access being given to Power 4 teams at the expense of others, Speraw explains: “I think it's likely right. At the end of the day when you look at the way the selection committee operates and how teams are evaluated, I think there's obviously a potential where you see teams last year – like maybe Indiana State, who who didn't make it – obviously you would expect if there was an expanded tournament that they would be a part of that. So it doesn't necessarily mean that all those [bids] would go to A4 [teams]...but they certainly are going to have an inside track at probably having strengthened resumes and those types of things from being in the conferences and playing the games they do. How much does that affect teams in the WAC? To be determined.” More on Connect. (link)

McNeese State Men’s Basketball HC Will Wade has “leaned into the blunt truth (what a concept!) and it's helped his McNeese Cowboys make history in the process,” according to CBS’ Matt Norlander, who notes Wade is in line to be the next coach at NC State, and “we only know this because he hasn't tried for a second to make anyone think otherwise.” In fact, Wade said yesterday that "we're not worried about any of that stuff. I mean, here's the thing: We can sit here and lie about it, but it is what it is. Our guys aren't worried about it, I ain't worried about it, none of our administration's worried about it, nobody's worried about it. We've been honest with everybody. It's great! Keep winning! Keep going!" Cowboys senior guard Christian Shumate adds: "I think when you're in the loop and both ends are transparent about things, there's not too much room for conflict. Everybody is aware of everything that's going on, and when there's a clear understanding, everybody keeps the same angle in the front of mind. We'll worry about all of that stuff later." Wade also pointed out that his situation is hardly unique and that "there are five coaches right now negotiating with other schools! I mean, c'mon, it’s true! Villanova is trying to hire a coach out of the NCAA Tournament right now!" Also from Wade: “Shoot, half the kids I recruit, the goal is to go Power 5 after this year. Some of you guys can go with me. We all know what’s up. For our guys, this was great for them. They’ve got a lot of schools in their DMs looking to pick them up, pay them.” (link, link)

With Power 4 and top mid-major men’s basketball programs set to have $3M available in rev-share, “blue bloods are preparing to spend upwards of $10M,” according to On3’s Pete Nakos, who is told by a source that “budgets are way up. Dollars are way up. Just the overall money, every starter now for a Power Four team is making $500K.” As for who will spend the most, one collective operator tells Nakos the “top of the Power 4 is going to be north of $10M easily, probably closer to $12M or even $14M. Arkansas hit $10M last year. I know that there are a couple of schools that have that target in sight and a couple that think that they’re gonna need to go, maybe even a million or two above that. I’ve heard lots of conversations around the ballpark of those numbers. The piece they’re going to have to figure out is rev-share. They’re only going to be $3M, so they’re going to have to go out and do a lot of hunting.” Another source remarks: “I know Kansas is going to step up their game considerably because he’s very aware of what his delta is on the market, even though he said it and then he got trumped last year. There are a couple of schools in the state of North Carolina that are quickly reevaluating and preparing and understanding what their number is going to be. There are a couple of schools there that have got a lot of people paying attention to what their basketball numbers should be.” More. (link)

Sportico’s Jacob Feldman explains that YouTube TV’s multiview “is actually a composite feed of the combined games—one video rather than multiple. YouTube TV opted for this method so that the feature would be available on devices with a range of computing power (with typical options like ‘decreased’ broadcast delay still available too), but it means that creating each multiview combination puts additional strain on YouTube TV’s servers. … Adding CBS games to the mix is particularly taxing, given YouTube TV is actually serving roughly 210 different versions of CBS and other local stations, divided by broadcast markets. What might look like a single multiview offering is in fact more than 200. All of which is to say, even a web giant like Google-owned YouTube is not ready to serve a completely unlimited array of multiview selections. At least not yet.” As far as how the games are selected for each multiview panel, YouTube TV Senior Product Manager Brianne Mirecki explains that a team of sports fans armed with usage data (as well as feedback on social media) helps make the determination. “We have to strike the right balance between what viewers want with our capacity.” For the first two rounds, men’s and women’s tourney games will be offered separately, but starting with the Sweet 16 there will be options that include contests from both tournaments. Mirecki also notes YouTube TV is focused on improving its backend tech to increase the number of multiview options that can be offered simultaneously “so that viewers will have more choices this upcoming NFL season.” (link)

ESPN reported collecting 24.4M brackets this week, up 10% from last year, and SBJ’s Bill King observes that while “plenty of them came from fans who are below the legal betting age and from states that haven’t legalized, there are still millions from those able to sign up for accounts and place bets.” VP of ESPN Bet and ESPN Fantasy Mike Morrison tells KIng: “We love it. It’s just really a nice feature, smartly connected to your pick to win the tournament. It seamlessly integrates with the ESPN Bet app. It took a lot of effort for the teams on both sides to build that. This is just the beginning of what the opportunity is there. We worked hard to get that in place for the tournament this year. It’s a great example of what we can do that’s unique to the ESPN ecosystem and to this partnership.” The network also ramped up integrations across its platforms in the days leading up to the tournament, and Morrison notes: “We look at this gaming ecosystem as all one thing. Tournament Challenge is a national business available in every state, every city, all over. Betting is available only in certain states. So we want to be able to deliver an experience across the whole gaming spectrum, either directly or through partners, because we understand this is part of the fan behavior that’s developing. Over time we’ll be able to figure out how those things interconnect. But we certainly expect them to, and we want to build an ecosystem that enables that, reduces the friction and continues to make that a stronger and stronger experience.” (link)

Nike reported Q3 revenue of $11.27B, which represents a 9% decline from the previous year’s quarter; however, the revenue still beat Wall Street’s expectation of $11.03B, and the company’s earnings per share of $0.54 nearly doubled the $0.29 estimate. Greater China was the worst performing region with sales down 18%, while North America, which is the largest market at $4.9B, was down just 4%. (link)
