Congratulations to Penn State for winning the NCAA Wrestling Championship yesterday. It was the Nittany Lions’ fourth consecutive natty and 13th in program history. New on Connect: UC San Diego AD Earl Edwards sits down with Anthony Grassi to talk about the Tritons’ decades-long transition from DIII to DII and now to DI. Edwards discusses the challenges going through the change and how the process could be adapted in the future to better accommodate the student-athlete experience. He also talks about maintaining the culture, determining fit within the department, what’s next for the Tritons and more. Edwards on the reclassification process: “I know we had to go through it for four years of waiting to become a full member. That’s something that has to change because no one can say that disenfranchising athletes for four years is a good experience. So, that number needs to be reduced. I also think maybe looking at some of the requirements or benchmarks that they put together – if you're a school that reaches those benchmarks at a certain time, which may be shorter than what they are requesting, you should be allowed to continue because many of the benchmarks that they had for the four years, we accomplished those in the year two, but we still had to wait another two years before we can compete.” Full Q&A. Notre Dame Deputy AD for Finance, Operations, Revenue and Business Strategy Yulander Wells joins James Moore & Co’s Katie Davis and Ken Kurdziel to discuss several topics, including the status of the Fighting Irish’s football independence, how ND is navigating the House settlement, the CABMA-NCAA financial reporting initiative and more. Wells says of maintaining independence in football: “We don't look at it as a challenge even in this landscape. We look at it as continuous opportunities, continuous opportunities to partner with the other conferences. … Our Olympic sports are in the ACC, and so we have a fantastic relationship with Commissioner Phillips and the rest of the athletic directors in the ACC, but we also have fantastic relationships...with the conference commissioners and the other athletic directors throughout the autonomous 4 schools." Wells also explains that “we like our ability to really have a schedule that allows us to travel all around the globe and play wonderful universities all across the country...and just do things that are really uniquely Notre Dame." Wells also says of CAMBA and the NCAA’s work on reforming financial reporting: “I think consistency would be the number one thing for all of us at these institutions to really think about when it comes to how we're going to be recording our revenues, particularly as it pertains to media rights and how we allocate them to the sports. … If we're not going to do things consistently as institutions when it comes to this reporting, then why are we doing the report? I think that's what we need to be asking ourselves.” Also from Wells: Notre Dame will always “ensure that ‘student’ stays before ‘athlete’ at Notre Dame. Our athletic director always speaks about what we don't want to do is have a campus where the athletes are on one side of campus and the students are on another side of campus and they're never connecting and never talking.” (link)

Illinois notes that AD Josh Whitman is one of just four ADs nationally – and the only one in the Big Ten – to hire their 2024-25 bowl game Football HC and NCAA Tournament-bound Men’s and Women’s Basketball HCs. Can you name the others? Answer in tomorrow morning’s D1.ticker. (link)

Arkansas Senior Assoc. AD for Public Relations and Former Student-Athlete Engagement/CSC President Kevin Trainor joins Connect's Bryan Fischer from 2025 NCAA Convention to highlight record CSC membership of nearly 4,500, talk about addressing the time demand on content creators, and share his perspective on PR/Marketing strategies with coaching changes. One of CSC’s objectives for this year, Trainor explains, is to engage the community of content creators “emerging in intercollegiate athletics – and people say ‘content creators,’ that's not a standalone content creator. Some of our members are both the traditional sports communicator and content creator, so when we talk about that, it's not just the individuals that are specifically doing that. It encompasses so many of our sports communicators, so speaking to that, the changing industry, communications is always going to be important in intercollegiate athletics, never more so than now.” (link)

For all the stats nerds out there, this one’s for you. NCAA Director of Media Coordination/Statistics David Worlock: “Since the bracket expanded in 1985, this is the sixth time that the 1, 2, 3 and 4 seeds all went undefeated in the first round. The others: 1994, 2000, 2004, 2007, 2017. The '94, '00, '07 and '17 tournaments were won by 1 seeds, while the '04 tournament was won by a 2 seed.” (link); On the women’s side, per ESPN Stats & Info: “For 1st time since field expanded to 64 in 1994, no team seeded 11 or higher won a round-of-64 game (doesn't include First Four). Average victory margin was 26.5, highest of any round in NCAA history, excluding finals. Six teams scored 100-plus points in 2025 1st round: [South Carolina, Texas, UConn, LSU, Notre Dame and Tennessee]. That ties the most 100-plus performances in an entire tournament (2017). There were 5 wins by 50+ points, 8 by 40+ & 12 by 30+.” (link)

ESPN is introducing a “rivals mode” as part of its app revamp that will allow users to follow news related to their foes. As a Yankees fan, ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro explains: “I actually want to see the Red Sox score right after the Yankees score, because I care, and I very much care, and the only way for me to get that is, that personalized way is for me to favorite the Boston Red Sox, which obviously I’m not going to do. … And so you will be able to pick your favorites, and you will be able to pick your rivals, or your favorites, so I would get my Red Sox score.” Pitaro also tells The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand the ESPN DTC product will not be delivered via a new app but will instead come as an improvement of the current app. “There’s a misconception in the industry that we are launching a new flagship app this fall.. We are not. The app exists. It’s called ESPN, and that app, as I said before, and I carefully chose my words just now, that app will be significantly enhanced, but it is the ESPN app that you see today, and the idea is, you fire it up, you authenticate or you purchase ESPN direct to the consumer.” Pitaro on the decline of cable: “Look, I don’t have a crystal ball. I don’t see it slowing down for the next couple of years. Could it level off at 35 or 40M households? It could, because there’s value there, right?… It’s challenging to have 15 different apps and usernames and passwords and all those charges on your credit card.” (link)

Apple’s sports strategy is likely to come into focus in the coming months, as JohnWallStreet notes ESPN has informed Formula 1 and Top Rank Boxing it does not plan to renew its contracts with them. Meanwhile, the network’s exclusive negotiating window with the UFC expires on April 15. Apple would “presumably be a logical landing spot for all three properties,” according to JWS, and Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes tells him: “Its philosophy is to acquire global media rights and deliver the same experience to fans, across their devices, in as many countries as possible. Well, here are three great, [and in the case of Top Rank and F1, relatively affordable], examples fitting that criterion.” Passing on all three, Crakes adds, “would suggest there isn’t a big pond to fish from befitting its strategy.” At that point, JWS posits it would be “fair to suggest many sports media observers may have misjudged the company’s position as a stalking horse,” and Crakes subsequently explains: “If you think that Apple’s going to bid aggressively, for example, for college football rights in 2030, you might want to rethink that.” It will have become clear “they’re not going to be a major piece of a puzzle that drives media rights [valuations] higher. … A lot of the castles in the sky are built on the idea that there's going to be numerous established and new bidders competing for multiple properties, at all price points, and that will drive values upwards in the years ahead.” But Apple waiting on the sidelines to build a robust rights portfolio… indicates leverage may be shifting in favor of the rights holder. SBJ’s Bret McCormick examines how COVID supercharged digital ticketing and is told by Kraft Analytics Group CEO Jessica Gelman that not only did it accelerate digital ticketing by 5-10 years, a generation that likely may have never chosen to adopt — baby boomer-age fans and older — suddenly did. SoFi Stadium VP of Ticket Operations Andrew Bragman shares an example: “My parents are in their 70s, they have [San Francisco] Giants season tickets; my dad is the guy that used to wear the lanyard with his season ticket around his neck because he thought he looked important.” Still, Bragman’s dad figured out digital ticketing quickly “because he wanted to go to his Giants games.” While this acceleration was occurring, “digital ticketing produced a data fountain that influenced the industry’s subsequent data analytics and business intelligence surge in the years since,” according to McCormick, and Detroit Pistons VP of Digital Intelligence Adam Falkson tells him: “It truly is that, if nothing else, the single most important feed of information we get in terms of subsequent prospecting and downstream impacts from segmentation and market impacts. There is no better indicator of interest in your live product than someone that is sampling it.” Pistons ticketing is now 99.9% digital, and Falkson says the team is adding 60-70K net new email addresses to its fan database each year because of it. Yet another trickle effect, per McCormick: “Digital ticketing rendered the venue box office obsolete. The employees that used to sit at the window now, armed with tablets or mobile devices, engage with oncoming fans and troubleshoot. The physical spaces have been converted into, for example, premium club entrances at Citi Field and Wells Fargo Center.” (link)

@1QLeadership Question: What goes into a good graduate sport administration program?
Dr. Patricia Raube Keller, Sports Administration Graduate Program Director at Boston College, discusses how her background and experiences shaped her approach to building the sports administration program. After working in college athletics, she transitioned to academia to be more present for her daughter. Her doctoral focus was on the marginalization of women in college athletics.
Raube Keller focuses on practical education as all classes in the program are taught by practitioners who work in sports. The program has a heavy emphasis on technical skills and soft skills as alumni work in all areas of sport. SMU officially announces the hire of Maryland AD Damon Evans. Board of Trustees Chair David Miller: “Our goal was to find a leader who shared our vision for the future of SMU Athletics - one of continued and even greater national prominence. We found that in a world-class athletic director with experience leading in both the Big 10 and SEC conferences, and who will bring bold, innovative ideas to our campus. Damon has led two top-tier athletics programs, and now he will lead a third. Damon’s knowledge, experience and extensive contacts in intercollegiate athletics will be invaluable in leading our Athletics program to even greater success in the ACC while strategically navigating the evolving NIL landscape.” (link); Meanwhile, Evans in a release at Maryland: “I am fiercely proud of what we have accomplished in my 10 years here, particularly the last seven as the Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics. With your generous support and the support of an amazing athletic department staff, we have won 49 B1G conference championships and seven national championships. We have built amazing facilities for our student-athletes, including Jones-Hill House, performance centers for baseball and softball and a new track at Ludwig Field. We installed state-of-the-art videoboards at SECU Stadium and Xfinity Center, opened the stunning Maryland Club and this summer we will open a gleaming new home for Maryland Basketball, the Barry Gossett Basketball Performance Center.” Senior Deputy AD/COO Colleen Sorem has been named Interim AD in College Park. On the Pony Express’ Billy Embody reports Oregon AD Rob Mullens also got into “serious discussions” with SMU before deciding to stay in Eugene. More from Embody: “A trio of names that were up-and-coming and were no secret to industry sources as getting looked at were Air Force AD Nathan Pine, UConn AD David Benedict, and Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey. All three are very different and all three haven’t worked in the power conference ranks. That said, Benedict and Dickey emerged as some of the top options thanks to their interviews. Funny enough, Chris Del Conte leans on Dickey for plenty of his ideas for Texas athletics. Benedict’s work at Auburn and at UConn were eyebrow raising for football and basketball, respectively.” (link)

New Saint Francis AD Jim Brazill Q&As with the university’s student newspaper. On the biggest challenges for the Red Flash: “It’s definitely the transfer portal. You might get a student-athlete (at Saint Francis) who is on the bubble. Essentially, we become a farm system because we will take student-athletes and develop them academically and athletically. We get them ready and the next thing you know, they have a good season and somebody else comes in and scoops them up.” As for conference realignment & the Northeast Conference: “I think it’s stable right now. They (NEC officials) have been in talks with some other schools about joining the conference. I know the number they like to be at is 10. I believe they are working on that. [...] I don’t know that there’s a ‘natural fit’ for us out there. You’ve got the Patriot League, but I’m not sure that one would be a fit for us. I don’t think there’s one out there right now.” (link)

The UCLA women’s basketball team traveled 36,116 miles in the air this season, which is tops in the country according to The Athletic’s Chantel Jennings, who reports that distance “equates to, roughly, one and a half trips around the world.” To help the team prepare, Bruins HC Cori Close scheduled several eastbound trips in the past few years to get a sense of what the travel rigor would look like and avoid potential pitfalls. Two years ago, they played at South Carolina — a 2,130-mile flight — and flew in the day before the game and left immediately after. A Sweet 16 flight last season to Albany on a red-eye that stopped for fuel proved small jets were a no-go for the upcoming Big Ten season. Close: “It was: How can we figure out all the things that are pulling on these kids, and what are all the things that can be interferences on the road? And how do you mitigate those within as much proactive planning as you can?” Meanwhile, Jennings points out that a Big Ten rule requires teams to spend two days of preparation in between games. “This is of little concern for Midwest-based programs — they fly home between games. But a return cross-country flight isn’t an option for UCLA, USC, Oregon and Washington, so in addition to seeing new conference arenas and practice facilities this season, the Bruins also toured Midwest towns.” Close also says she met with dietitians, trainers and sleep specialists to maximize the team’s performance: “I’ve been more reliant on the science of load in how we practice. We just made some tweaks the last couple weeks about things that we’re just not going to do live anymore, to sort of minimize some of the wear and tear.” Lots more. (link)

The Indianapolis Star’s Zach Osterman and Michael Niziolek peel back the curtain on Indiana’s Men’s Basketball HC search and note that “with the help of search firm TurnkeyZRG — and in the interests of respecting both his and other programs’ ongoing seasons — [Hoosiers AD Scott] Dolson kept a profile so demonstrably low that even in the final hours of the search, college basketball power brokers still considered themselves so in the dark on IU’s intentions they wondered if Dolson had a ‘mystery candidate’ waiting in the wings.” Most of the candidates were active college coaches, and Dolson “let them dictate when they felt comfortable talking about IU’s coaching vacancy all while doing background work that proved crucial to the process,” according to Osterman and Niziolek. That background work included a study led by Hoosiers Director of Strategic Communications John Decker, who conducted an analysis of coaching profiles. “Indiana asked, for example, whether a head coach successful in a certain job had inherited any of that success, or built it from scratch. … Decker’s number crunching picked up on the fact that [former Hoosiers HC Archie] Miller had more or less sustained success at Dayton, rather than built it — Brian Gregory won 97 games in his final four seasons coaching the Flyers, before handing off to Miller, who won 90 in his first four years there. Conversely, Hoosiers HC Darian DeVries won 95 games in his first four years at Drake, which had won just 40 games in the four years before he arrived. The study also found that DeVries has a career .650 winning percentage in games decided by five points or less, and Dolson notes: “As we looked around the country, that's something that's really significant with winning programs. All that stuff mattered.” Lots more. (link)

The “hate” the Duke men’s basketball team inspires is part of what drives ratings for CBS and Turner each March, according to Sportico’s Anthony Crupi, who points out the Blue Devils participated in both of the most-watched title games going back to 2008. The 2015 matchup against Wisconsin drew 28.3M viewers while the 2010 title tilt with Butler brought in 23.9M. Going back further, Crupi notes the “1992 Duke-Michigan bout remains the second most-watched college basketball game on the books behind only the Bird-Magic showcase in 1979, averaging 34.3M viewers. Indeed, Michigan’s share of top 20 games is second only to Duke’s, as the maize-and-blue have appeared in four of the most-watched broadcasts of all time to Duke’s half-dozen.” Should Duke fail to advance to the Final Four, Crupi observes that “you can’t swing a Wildcat by the tail this year without hitting a blue blood. Kentucky’s a bit of a long shot (30-1) to play Alamo-adjacent basketball in a few weeks, but it always draws a crowd, and Duke’s archnemesis North Carolina is already making the nay-sayers and whingers look a bit dim after its 95-68 demolition of San Diego State.” Furthermore, a “deep run by Rick Pitino’s zillionaire-enhanced Red Storm unlocks the cheat code for a home market that features 7.49M TV households, which accounts for 6% of the entire national base.” (link)

Former ESPN President/Meadowlark Media Co-Founder John Skipper joined the Pable Torre Finds Out show and has some predictions regarding March Madness: “Look, colleges, athletic departments, college presidents have demonstrated that to get more money, they will do pretty much anything. I don’t know why there’s already discussions with SEC and Big Ten sort of bullying into ‘we’re going to get more guaranteed slots in the College Football Playoff.’ So they got the mindset already that, that we’re going to keep other people out. Why wouldn't you create four super conferences — 64 teams — and that's your governing body? ... Who else has a governing body which is an independent third party? ... Why don't four college conferences go, 'We're going to do our own basketball tournament, 64 teams. We'll sell that for $1.5 billion dollars, and we'll divide that among our schools, and we'll further separate the haves from the have-nots. … And forget for a minute whether it’s a better aesthetic event. What do you think any of the college commissioners and presidents care? They want more money. Haven’t we talked on this show over and over? The fans are never considered. The individual conferences end up getting 35 million, 40, 50, 60 million. If you could look at splitting up a billion and a half, that’s $375 million distributed to 16 schools. So I’m not suggesting I think it’s more poetic or more interesting. I’m just suggesting the economic value of that $375. I can’t quite do the math with 16, but it’s 20. It’s close to $25 million a school.” (link)

The University of California will pause all hiring systemwide and make additional cuts to maintenance, business travel and other areas in response to threats from the Trump administration to slash federal funding for universities. UC President Michael Drake says the cutbacks will impact nearly every aspect of operations at all 10 campuses. “The new administration in Washington, D.C., has announced a number of executive orders and proposed policy changes, including ones that threaten funding for lifesaving research, patient care, and education support.” Coupled with preparations the university was already making in response to a proposed $396.6M state funding cut, Drake says he and chancellors were ready for “significant financial challenges ahead.” (link)
