Winthrop Intelligence & WIN AD are back in the headlines as Sportico’s Daniel Libit reports on the latest legal developments surrounding the embroiled industry data company. Key nuggets from Libit: “Drue Moore’s widow, Kelly, and their two children are now suing (business partner Robert Scott) Brooks and (tax attorney Dennis Scott) Robinson, claiming their unfounded accusations of him embezzling Winthrop funds led to Drue’s death by suicide. [...] This latest lawsuit describes Drue Moore’s final months as a frantic, anxiety-ridden struggle to appease the defendants. After being accused of improperly taking distributions from Winthrop, the lawsuit claims, Drue was ‘unduly pressured’ into resolving the matter by transferring well over $1 million to Brooks or entities under his control. To do so, the lawsuit claims, Drue liquidated his personal brokerage account, withdrew funds from educational and E-Trade accounts he had set up for his nieces, and cashed out of a ‘charity investment property’ in Nairobi, Kenya. In addition to the money, the lawsuit says that he sent Brooks multiple high-priced watches. Despite all this, Kelly Moore claims that on Jan. 3, Brooks sent Drue Moore a letter purportedly terminating his involvement with Winthrop and its affiliated entities. The letter demanded a full accounting of his personal assets and threatened criminal charges and public humiliation if Drue did not comply by Jan. 10—the day he died by suicide. The lawsuit further alleges that since then, Brooks has informed Kelly that both he and Winthrop are creditors of Moore, and that Robinson improperly transferred assets from Moore’s trusts.” Lots more, including, “Robinson declined to say who is currently running Winthrop. However, on Jan. 22, he signed the one-year renewal of Binghamton University’s WIN AD software services agreement, according to a copy of the deal obtained by Sportico.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake spent some time in Spokane to explore Gonzaga as part of his tour of the new-look Pac-12, and Mayor Lisa Brown assures him that “Gonzaga is a huge deal in Spokane.” Asked by Canzano who would get the last table in a restaurant if she and Men’s Basketball HC Mark Few walked in at the same time, Brown responds: “Mark Few is a celebrity, let’s just put it that way.” Zags AD Chris Standiford, Canzano writes, was “intentional about showing me Gonzaga’s ‘other’ sports on the tour. We slipped inside the rowing team’s training facility. It’s a massive operation with rows of machinery. After basketball, rowing is the next biggest sport in Gonzaga’s athletic department.” Before deciding to join the Pac-12, Gonzaga “was aware of its value, particularly when it came to basketball media rights and branding. One of the school’s boosters bankrolled the hiring of a high-profile consulting firm. The school engaged in exploratory conversations with other conferences, including the Big 12, in the last few years. But an offer never materialized.” When the Pac-12 eventually came calling, Standiford explains it “happened very, very quickly. We’d done all the analysis. We knew the valuations. We knew what the market said about us. For Gonzaga, it was a big deal to move beyond the private catholic, colloquial, West Coast Conference university to something else.” More. (link)

CBS’ Richard Johnson examines the future of Stanford’s football program under GM Andrew Luck’s leadership and notes that when allegations against former HC Troy Taylor came out last week, “Luck met with the team in Taylor's presence” on Thursday and “doubled down on standing by his coach. Now here we are, five days later, and Luck has fired Taylor with a statement that read, in part, ‘After continued consideration it is evident to me that our program needs a reset. In consultation with our university leadership I no longer believe that Coach Taylor is the right coach to lead our football program. … Reading between the lines, it's possible that administrators above Luck -- perhaps outgoing athletic director Bernard Muir or new school president Jon Levin -- stepped in. It's not ideal to conduct a coaching search in March, and it seems like Stanford was planning to run it back with Taylor in 2025 if none of this had come to light.” Regardless, with Luck’s name attached to the statement dismissing Taylor, Johnson points out that what Luck was hired to do “has much more executive function than simply stocking the roster.” As such, “it also should bring with it more scrutiny about Luck's role in Stanford football's future. He is the one in charge of the program, and because of that, he should also be on the hook for explaining how the program will be cleaned up no matter who the next permanent coach.” (link)

The narrative continues regarding NIL’s role in this year’s lack of March Madness cinderellas, as Oakland Men’s Basketball HC Greg Kampe tells Yahoo’s Jeff Eisenberg that it took losing standout Trey Townsend to Arizona to drive home the point that mid-majors are the de facto farm system for power-conference programs. “He’s making 20 times what I could give him this season. What do you do? You wish him well. Many of these guys are being told you’re not going to be in the NBA, so get your money now and you’ve got a chance to start your life with a little bit of a bankroll. That’s a hard thing to argue against. I can’t argue against that with my players.” The clamor about the lack of upsets this year, however, ignores the ways NIL is improving college basketball, according to Eisenberg, who points out: “Fringe NBA prospects are staying in college longer rather than chasing money in the G League or overseas. Some of this season’s most recognizable veteran stars would have been long gone in previous eras.” While that may make things tougher for mid-majors, Kampe tells Eisenberg that “we’re going to keep turning over every stone. This NCAA tournament has been a wakeup call, a slap in the face. OK, what do we do? How do we win this way? We’re going to find a counter, maybe not Greg Kampe but someone smarter than Greg Kampe at this level will figure it out.” (link)

It’s Personnel…
+ Louisville President Kim Schatzel said she “can’t comment” when asked directly whether she was still the university’s president, according to WDRB’s Marcus Green, who reports “several sources” have indicated that a “shakeup in the president's office was imminent.” UL Interim VP of Communications and Marketing John Karman tells Green that the “Board of Trustees has taken no action. Dr. Schatzel remains president of the university.” Trustees are slated to meet today at 5 PM to discuss personnel matters, and Green adds: “Also on Tuesday, University of Cincinnati President Neville Pinto wrote in a memo to the school that Gerry Bradley, a finalist for the UC executive vice president for academic affairs and provost, ‘is pursuing other opportunities.’ Bradley held the same post at UL but accepted the Cincinnati job last week.” (link)

+ Freshly minted UNLV Men’s Basketball HC Josh Pastner’s five-year deal will pay him an average of $960K annually. Pastner will earn a base salary of $500K this year before getting a bump to $1M for the second and third years and $1.15M for the final two years. Pastner is eligible for $50K bonuses for reaching the Final Four and winning the national championship, and he can earn $25K for winning the Mountain West regular-season title, conference title and receiving an at-large NCAA Tournament berth. A season in which the Runnin’ Rebels win 14 or more conference games will net Pastner $10K, and he would get $25K for winning Mountain West Coach of the Year and $50K for a national coach of the year award. Should Pastner leave for another school, his buyout starts at $3M in the first year and decreases by $250K each season. UNLV would owe Pastner 75% of his remaining salary for relieving him of his duties before the contract ends. (link)

If the Tigers part ways with Harper before the end of the contract, Harper would be owed 75% of her remaining pay. Additionally, the contract specifies Harper will have a $950K pool to hire her coaching staff, including five assistants, a strength coach, a director of operations, a director of creative content and a director of video/analytics. The Men's and Women's Basketball Oversight Committees on Tuesday proposed legislation to limit regular seasons to 32 games. If approved, the proposal would become effective beginning with the 2026-27 basketball season. Teams wouldn't be required to schedule 32 games, and the blanket waiver involving multiple-team events would remain in place for the 2025-26 season. The proposal also aligns both sports with equitable participation opportunities. Currently, men's and women's basketball teams can schedule 28 games with an additional three-game MTE for a maximum of 31 games. Teams can also choose to schedule 29 games with a two-game MTE with a 31-game maximum. Or teams can schedule 29 regular-season games without a multiple-team event included. (link)

The Football Oversight Committee “tabled the request” that would have allowed Army West Point and Navy to play an additional regular season game.” Midshipmen AD Chet Gladchuk and former Black Knights AD Mike Buddie had jointly submitted a petition to the NCAA asking for the ability to schedule a 13th regular season game because the Army-Navy Game is played six days after the College Football Playoff field is determined, meaning the game can’t figure into the selection committee’s calculus. Fox Sports EVP Jordan Bazant talks about the the upcoming College Basketball Crown and tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “For college basketball, what’s crazy is for all the revenue it generates, a lot of these student-athletes don’t get that big bowl-game experience that college football [and] their colleagues in other sports do. There are some amazing bowl games not in the CFP that provide these student athletes with amazing experiences, once-in-a-lifetime experiences – and we want to bring that to people in college basketball.” The NIT final has averaged 417K viewers for ESPN over the past three years, and Bazant says for the Crown’s first year the “No. 1 thing is how do we provide exposure for the league and the teams to bring in more sponsors? Because then you have more arms to grow the sport. You have more champions. … We’re hoping that the NCAA and all those other partners, even some of the event promoters, look at us and say, ‘Wow, these guys are great partners. Look what they’ve done. How can we continue to help them?’” With Vivid Seats offering a $500K NIL pool for the tournament, AEG President/COO of Global Partnerships Nick Baker, whose firm sold sponsorships for the event, tells Portnoy: “What is important here is that we’re seeing the goals of multiple parties achieved and this tournament is enhancing college basketball for student athletes, for fans and for brands.” (link)

Saint Francis will transition to DIII and join the Presidents' Athletic Conference, with the Red Flash to continue competing in DI through 2025-26. Board of Trustees Chairman Very Rev. Joseph Lehman: “This was not an easy nor a quick decision for the Board of Trustees. The governance associated with intercollegiate athletics has always been complicated and is only growing in complexity based on realities like the transfer portal, pay-for-play, and other shifts that move athletics away from love of the game. For that reason, as a Board, we aim to best provide resources and support to our student-athletes in this changing environment that aligns with our mission, Catholic institution, and our community's expectations.” (link)

Meanwhile, Northern Illinois has released a presentation highlighting successes over the past several years, the current financial picture, the move to the Mountain West and Horizon League and more. In breaking down the Huskies’ $32.9M in revenue for FY24, the presentation notes that $8.9M came from external funding, $6.8M came via an athletic fee, $4.5M came via the Convocation Center and Huskie Stadium and $3.1M came by way of the Recreation Center. The presentation also explains part of the rationale for changing conferences was to increase visibility in emerging markets and areas with large alumni bases: “El Paso, Reno, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Albuquerque stand out as emerging markets due to their growth and regional influence, making them ideal road game destinations. These cities, along with global destinations such as San Francisco and Honolulu or scenic locales like Colorado Springs, offer fans unforgettable experiences and excellent hospitality options. Each destination provides unique opportunities to connect with supporters and create memorable moments around the game.” Huskies AD Sean Frazier: “As I always say, there's no such thing as standing still you either are moving forward or moving backward. Embracing our new athletic model is something we believe strongly gives us a fighting chance to continue our academic and athletic success. While there will be challenges along the way, the support of our fans, donors, alumni and community remains absolutely critical as we move forward, ascending to the mountaintop and expanding our horizon.” (link, link – full presentation)

Virginia AD Carla Williams says the difference in NIL for men’s hoops is “significant” compared to where it was before, adding: “We’ve had to shift the culture to one that is two feet in on competing at this level and we just had to tell [Assoc. AD for Development] Barry Parkhill go and we’ve been able to secure the funds we need to have a top 10 program.” Williams also notes Deputy AD Wally Walker filled the GM role this past year and UVA will look to fill out HC Ryan Odom’s staff, including the appointment of a new GM, this week. Grand Canyon President Brian Mueller comments on the future of GCU athletics being centered around basketball: "People ask me all the time, 'Are you going to start a football program?' The bottom line is that 90% of the universities that have football lose a lot of money. … When 80% of the NIL has to go to football, there's not a lot left for the other sports. So if you're a basketball person, going to a school that doesn't have football puts you in a position from a resource standpoint that other so-called mid-major schools aren't going to have. … The magic of the NCAA Tournament is so significant from a university perspective. There's nothing like it. The magic of that tournament is it brings exposure to your institution unlike almost anything else – the national championship football game, yes, but it's a lot of years before you're going to get there.” (link)

Rutgers Football HC Greg Schiano is in no rush to hire a GM, telling NJ Advance Media’s Steve Politi that “I’m comfortable with the way we’re handling it. If the right person became available, we would certainly do it. But until that right person is available, I’ll handle parts of that. … I don’t think [revenue-sharing] really changes things. It’s all relative. Because all the other people in our league are getting the same money. So what does it do? Everything just came up. The players are finally going to get what I think they deserve because the money gets to be more and more, but I don’t think relatively it changes much. If you have a great NIL, now you have a great NIL on top of revenue-share. If you don’t, then you have a little bit on top of revenue share. Everyone would like to simplify it like that, but if you’re actually in the mix, you know that it’s just as hard as it was. You just got to keep battling.” Schiano also points to his time in the NFL, noting that he “didn’t know any of [the roster/salary cap dynamics], which was a real disadvantage. I learned a ton, and I learned a ton after the fact, as well. Salary cap, agents, all those things, I feel very comfortable with that, and I think it needs to be an advantage for us.” (link); Schiano also says there are teams in the Big Ten that paid “$25M or $30M for their roster last year. I don't think they are going to take a pay cut. So, how that all gets sorted out, that's going to be the interesting part, but I don't really care." Schiano also addresses the status of transfer safety Jett Elad, and wouldn’t confirm that Elad has a $500K NIL deal hanging in the balance, noting: “Yeah, I'm never going to get into, unless I'm publicly required to reveal it, I'll never get into who is getting what. Just don't believe everything you read, is something that I learned a long time ago. Jett is a really good player. Glad he's here." (link)

The NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament is on pace for its highest viewership since 1993, according to SBJ’s Austin Karp. Through the second round, the combined average viewership across CBS, TNT, TBS and truTV is 9.4M viewers, up 3% from the same point last year. Karp adds: “Sunday was predictably the best day to date, with the four networks combining to average 10.1M viewers (+13%), highlighted by Duke-Baylor, Kentucky-Illinois and Florida-UConn. The games on Thursday/Friday averaged 8.8M viewers, a record for the first round of the tourney. That also had the most-watched opening day of the tourney on record, as Thursday’s games averaged a combined 9.1M viewers across the four networks. March Madness social media accounts are on pace to break records for total views (already pacing 12% better than 2024). The most-viewed social posts to date this tourney were Derik Queen’s buzzer beater for Maryland to reach the Sweet 16 and McNeese State basketball manager Amir Khan’s walkout intro with the team.” (link)

Games across ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU averaged 367K viewers during this year’s NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament first round. SBJ’s Austin Karp notes that figure is down 22% from 471K last year but up 43% from 257K in 2023. Connecticut’s win over Arkansas State on Saturday was the most-watched, averaging 1.1M viewers on ABC. Karp notes that makes it the “third-best, first-round women’s tourney game on record. On Friday, Tennessee-USF averaged 684K viewers on ESPN, which is the second-best weekday first-round women’s tourney game yet. The first round also had 1.2B minutes consumed across all networks, second-best all-time for the first round, behind only 2024. (link)

The NCAA Wrestling Championships on ESPN averaged 703K viewers with a peak of 806K. The average viewership is up 72% YoY, making it the most-watched finals since 2017 and third most-watched in the last 15 years. (link)

FIU football student-athlete Marquez Tatum alleges a “systematic administrative failure following his injury, claiming the university obstructed his medical redshirt waiver and jeopardized his collegiate athletic career,” according to Heitner Legal Founder Darren Heitner, who adds: “FIU must be held accountable.” Heitner contends in a letter that Tatum “encountered a series of deliberate misrepresentations and administrative negligence that have fundamentally undermined his athletic opportunities.” To wit, “upon suffering a broken arm, Mr. Tatum was explicitly assured by FIU's head athletic trainer, Dustin West, that his medical waiver paperwork would be processed and approved. … Contrary to these assurances, FIU's Compliance office never actually filed the medical redshirt waiver; provided contradictory and evasive communications regarding his status; and refused to submit required paperwork for his medical redshirt and JUCO year of eligibility.” Furthermore, Heitner alleges Tatum was “inappropriately pressured to return to practice before full recovery, even being instructed to participate using only one side of his body to accommodate his injured arm. … Mr. Tatum is pursuing all legal remedies to rectify the administrative errors, seek proper processing of his medical redshirt waiver and hold FIU accountable for its systematic failures.” (link)

Former Auburn men’s basketball star Chuck Person, who was ensnared in the FBI probe into college hoops as the Tigers’ Assoc. HC, tells Sportico’s Daniel Libit he harbors no ill will toward the school or HC Bruce Pearl. In fact, Person says Pearl invited him to a game this season, but Person declined, noting that “I still feel some kind of way.” Libit adds that Person “declined to comment on the case or its disposition, opting instead to keep his first public remarks more optimistic—and less controversial. He said he was ‘not surprised’ by the Tigers’ triumphs in the years since he departed, and would expect it to continue.” (link)
