Saint Mary’s President Roger Thompson argues in a San Francisco Chronicle op-ed that the NCAA should reconsider its implementation of roster limits as part of the House settlement. “My colleagues and I around the country want to expand opportunities for our students; we want to create more opportunities to study abroad, participate in the arts, conduct research in our labs, and learn from top educators. Why, then, would we sit back and allow the NCAA to intentionally restrict opportunities for students to play on a competitive sports team?” Thompson also emphasizes the important role walk-ons can play and points out that Gaels men’s basketball standout Luke Barrett began his career without a scholarship. “Had the NCAA’s roster limits been in place when Luke entered college, he may never have had the opportunity to play and grow as a person and player the way that he has. … It’s imperative that someone advocate for the students, especially those without scholarships who are simply seeking a chance. Isn’t that—opportunity — what higher education is meant to provide? I strongly encourage college presidents and supporters of collegiate athletics to join me in urging the NCAA to reconsider their proposed changes to roster limits.” (link)

Learfield CEO Cole Gahagan tells Adweek’s Jason Notte that after observing how NIL would impact the sports marketing economy the company has developed its strategy: “The overwhelming majority of college towns have been sports marketing economies of one for 70 or 80 years, and that sports marketing economy was the university, so if you were a car dealership, restaurant chain, or insurance company and you were looking to have this attachment to fans, your one avenue for commercial deal-making and for partnerships was with the school. Now, with an average school having 450 student-athletes or greater, you’ve gone from a sports marketing economy of one in towns like Gainesville, Florida; Ames, Iowa; or Lubbock, Texas, to a sports marketing economy of 451 or 501.” With the House settlement looming, Gahagan believes Learfield is positioned to further expand its role in college sports because “you have tens of millions in new expenses in this upcoming fiscal year that you did not have before, so when that happens to any organization, you have one of two solutions for how you absorb that: You either increase revenue substantially to help you offset those new and incremental costs, or you cut costs. Everything that we do is about helping schools improve fan connectivity and grow revenue.” The company has built a fan data platform of 107M fans, and Gahagan explains: “What I hear consistently is that the space of college athletics is vast, it’s fragmented, and we really just need simplicity and working with one provider who can help us navigate all of that. Yes, it’s still important for me to put State Farm and Marriott and Nissan and others in front of brands during games and activate during basketball and football and baseball and volleyball games, but it’s of equal, if not greater, importance that I can say to those same brands, I can talk to those fans 365 days a year” via the platform. UCF, as part of the revenue-sharing process, will add 74 new scholarships that will benefit the Knights’ 16 Olympic sports, according to the Orlando Sentinel’s Matt Murschel. Softball HC Cindy Ball-Malone: “We’ve been told that we’re going to be supported very well, and with some of the projected numbers, it’s exciting. There’s still education that needs to happen. Some people think, ‘Oh, now everyone gets 25 scholarships.’ That’s not what that means. Even the biggest schools with the most money, that’s not what it means. We must educate ourselves to understand what that looks like, especially in our sport.” (link)

Temple is launching the Competitive Excellence Funds, which will support student-athletes’ NIL opportunities and “expand the pool of available resources for scholarships, creating a more competitive environment for Temple's student-athletes.” Each program will have its own sport-specific Competitive Excellence Fund, allowing coaches to allocate resources to their athletes in a way they see fit. Owls AD Arthur Johnson: "The introduction of the Competitive Excellence Funds represents a transformative opportunity for Temple Athletics. This initiative not only enhances the student-athlete experience but also allows us to stay competitive at the highest levels. By empowering our donors to support student-athletes directly, we are providing them with the resources and opportunities they need to thrive both on the field and in life. Together, we can elevate Temple Athletics to new heights." (link)

Charlotte Sports Live’s (CSL) Joey Ellis, who captured the video of Connecticut Men’s Basketball HC Dan Hurley leaving the court after the loss to Florida exclaiming “I hope they don’t f*** you like they f***ed us” to Baylor coaches, was reportedly confronted by Huskies Director of Men’s Basketball Communications Bobby Mullen. CSL’s Gabe McDonald: “Mullen asked for that video that had gone viral to be removed. He then threatened Joey saying he would ‘ruin his life’ if he didn't. This was heard by multiple other reporters and staff on hand.” Mullen in a statement to CSL: “The lasting image of Coach Hurley leaving the court should have been his walking off the court arm-in-arm with his seniors, overwhelmed with emotion. Instead, a reporter, who was in an area he should not have been, recorded on a cell phone a private comment made to members of another coaching staff.” (link)

Two former Michigan student-athletes – one former member of the women’s gymnastics team and one former member of the women’s soccer team – have filed a lawsuit against the university, the Board of Regents, former Football AC Matthew Weiss and Keffer Development Services after Weiss was arrested last week on federal charges. From the suit: "As a result of the University’s recklessness, the recklessness of the Regents, and the gross negligence of Keffer, Weiss downloaded personal, intimate digital photographs and videos of Plaintiffs and others, all of which Plaintiffs and other class members entrusted to the Non-Individual Defendants. Because the Non-Individual Defendants negligently and recklessly failed to exercise any control over Weiss, Weiss, in furtherance of performance of his job duties, was able to successfully target athletes such as Plaintiffs and others similar to them and download, obtain, and use their private information, images, and videos." Tennessee Tech will improve the sound system at the Hooper Eblen Center in a $2.6M renovation. Golden Eagles AD Mark Wilson: “We’ve been discussing it for a number of years now. We’ve had consultants that have come in and looked at it, but now just became the time. … We’ve had complaints from fans over the years about not being able to hear when a public address announcer is talking or during commencement about having issues. So we’ve had to supplement the commencement with additional speakers and an additional sound system for good sound at commencement.” (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy profiles the newly launched Snack Sports, which he explains is “functionally designed to mimic the presentation and scrollability of TikTok, while filling its feeds with licensed highlights.” Founder Mark Malek describes Snack Sports as “‘SportsCenter-izing’ things for this younger generation in a way that you’re just not going to get on other platforms because they’re not focused on the sports user as much as they are on more general [user-generated] content.” Portnoy notes the “feed itself is reminiscent of other short-form video platforms, given its vertical orientation, but where it differs immensely is it’s not based on user-generated content. The highlights that populate the feed instead have been obtained through deals brokered between it and companies such as Raycom — which represents the interests of Big 12 Studios and ACC Digital Network. Snack Sports recently signed an “upper six-figures” deal with Warner Bros. Discovery and CBS to use digital highlights from the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments (WBD and the NCAA declined comment when reached by Sports Business Journal for this story, and CBS did not respond). Heading into thai year’s March Madness, the app had around 1,000 users, and Malek tells Portnoy that "conservatively, if I have 50,000 happy campers on my platform who have used this to enjoy March Madness in some capacity, that’s major success for me. If I have 20,000 users, I feel good about it.” (link)

One of March Madness’s breakout stars, McNeese State student manager Amir Khan, will follow former Cowboys HC Will Wade to NC State. Hawaii learned from the pushback it received from its last AD search concerning the lack of diversity on its search committee, according to the Star-Advertiser’s Dave Reardon, who points out that “several committee members are of Hawaiian ethnicity, including Punahou athletic director Reydan ‘Tita’ Ahuna and UH soccer coach Michele Nagamine.” Former UH baseball/basketball standout Artie Wilson, who is Black and was a leading voice in the 2023 protest, is also on the committee this time around. Still, Reardon posits that “I am certain no one on this committee played or coached football at UH recently. That’s where this group will need help if it is going to ask relevant questions of potential athletic director hires about how they envision the College Football Playoff, the lack of a legit stadium, and other football-specific issues affecting UH. Some transfer portal and NIL issues are the same from sport-to-sport, but the sheer numbers related to football creates some unique challenges. No doubt everyone on this committee is well-connected. But the lack of a member from the current day or at least recent UH football realm is glaring.” (link)

Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown at the 2024 Women Leaders Convention to discuss the evolving role of university presidents, managing a team of veteran leaders, cultivating consensus among competitive peer institutions and lots more. McGlade notes that “at the end of the day, my role as commissioner is to try to bring everyone to the point where it’s going to be a positive decision for the entire league, not just one institution. … You have to be very careful at the league level to make decisions that are in the best interest of the whole operation of the full enterprise because if it’s not, you’ll start to see cracks in the armor as you go from year to year and get older and more mature as a league.” On hiring veteran administrators, such as former UNC Greensboro AD Kim Record as Senior Assoc. Commissioner/Chief of Staff, McGlade explains that it’s “critically important to have a deep, experienced staff… you have to have individuals who are professional, adept and capable of doing more than just one responsibility within the league office for our membership.” McGlade and Brown also discuss the dynamics of technology and impact of social media on storytelling, with McGlade noting: “We focus on everything that we can deliver through the messaging and the brand of Atlantic 10 basketball” in an effort to support the league’s 22 other championships. Maryland Men’s Basketball HC Kevin Willard acknowledges he’s talked to his team about rumors he could make the jump to Villanova. He also says he’s been offered a contract extension by Maryland but has yet to sign anything because, according to The Athletic’s Lindsay Schnell, “things are not where they should be.” Willard explains further: “I want this program to be great. I want it to be the best in the country, I want to win a national championship, but there’s things that need to change. … I need to make sure that where we are with (NIL) and revenue-share is not where we’ve been with NIL over the past two years. We’ve been one of the worst, if not lowest, in the NIL in the last two years.” Willard goes on to share an example of the Terps’ investment in hoops: “I wanted to spend an extra night in New York this year to celebrate Christmas with my team, and I was told that we can’t do that because it’s too expensive. I don’t know how we can be a top-tier program, and I can’t spend one extra night in New York because it’s too expensive.” Willard went on to say after the Terps’ first-round NCAA Tourney win over Grand Canyon that “if something’s not better and I have an opportunity to make it better, I’m going to make it better. And really, the only way to do it in college athletics is to put it in your contract. Because if not, they’re going to lie to you. They’re going to sit there and say, ‘Oh, we’re going to do this, we’re going to do that.’ Next thing you know, they don’t. Unless it’s in your contract, they don’t do it. I understand it. I know how to play the game.” Willard also clarifies that his remarks shouldn’t be construed to mean he dislikes his job: “I love this job. It’s a phenomenal job. I just want to make the job the best job. And there’s a huge difference in that.” More. (link)

The Athletic’s Chris Vannini points out this is the first NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament since 2007 with no teams seeded 12 or lower in the Sweet 16. (link); Meanwhile, Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams notes that “for the first time in the 47 years since the FBS was formed, the entire Sweet Sixteen will be FBS schools." (link); NCAA Director of Media Coordination and Statistics David Worlock keeps the stats coming by pointing out that “the SEC just broke the record for most teams in the Sweet 16 with 7 (Auburn, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ole Miss and Arkansas). The old record was 6 by the ACC in 2016 (Duke, Miami, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Syracuse and Virginia).” (link)

Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich wonders whether the NCAA could’ve gotten more out of its championship media rights deal given the increasing value of women’s hoops, and Kosner Media Founder John Kosner says: “We understand that the NCAA represents lifeblood revenue for the schools, and the schools want a long-term guarantee. So by definition, they have a lot of pressure on them and they have to view it conservatively. I just felt that there was more value to be had.” Kosner and Desser Media President Ed Desser still believe the NCAA could’ve earned more money by selling women’s basketball separately, and Kosner, per Christovich, explained an alternative proposal: “selling women’s basketball as a standalone with multiple bidders, then selling a package of other top NCAA championships like softball and baseball. That could’ve increased the overall dollar figure.” Kosner: “If you create a package that only one entity [ESPN] can really bid for, you don’t know the value of it.” Desser adds: “We were mocked endlessly for our audacity to think that the women’s tournament was—we didn’t even say it was the equal of the men, we just thought it was a bona fide event. We have close friends of ours who we respect in the industry, and they’re from a different generation, but they just dismissed the notion as implausible. And that’s how a lot of decisions get made in the industry. And if the owner of the property isn’t willing to fight their way through that, they get what they deserve. And it’s really unfortunate.” (link)

The Athletic’s Ben Pickman wonders why betting interest isn’t keeping up with the growth in popularity of women’s basketball and notes that “industry experts point to a number of factors. Resource allocation, product placement and questions about demand are among them. Some see it as a chicken-or-the-egg dilemma.” New Haven sport management professor Ceyda Mumcu explains one reason for the slow adoption is the placement of wagers on betting apps. “It is not as accessible, and you have to dig and click around to find it if it is there.” Pickman goes on to write that “promoting a sport takes a commitment to resources. Fanatics, for instance, has five full-time traders who handle everything basketball, but no singular person focused on women’s college basketball. Not until the women’s NCAA Tournament will they have traders solely working on women’s games.” To that end, Eilers & Krejcik Gaming Partner Chris Grove explains: “Developing an emerging sport…requires learning the who, how and why of betting on the sport, building sport-specific promotional and marketing strategies and identifying and accounting for any integrity components that might be unique to the sport.” Meanwhile, marketplace intelligence firm YieldSec indicates there were more than 4.1x as many illegal women’s basketball bet market offerings last year (in college and the WNBA), not including predictors, than legal offerings in the U.S. They found there was nearly as much money bet last year on women’s basketball illegally ($1.49B) as on men’s basketball legally ($1.55B). YieldSec Founder/CEO Ismail Vali: “The lack of betting offers from the legal industry is weirdly, inadvertently, unconsciously, unknowingly, maybe, driving people into illegal gambling because they can’t find the bets they want on legal sites. (Illegal gambling companies) just see it as more content equals more money.” (link)

Michigan State Men’s Basketball HC Tom Izzo and UCLA HC Mick Cronin both expressed thinly veiled displeasure about the late start times in the NCAA Tournament. After the Spartans’ first round victory, Izzo was informed the next game would be at 8:40 on Sunday, to which Izzo responded with an eye roll: “At least it’s an hour earlier.” Following the Bruins’ loss to Tennessee on Saturday, Cronin was asked for an opening statement and said: “I don’t really have one. It’s 12:30.” Asked by a reporter at what point he will start thinking about next season, Cronin replied: “Right now, guys, it’s 12:40 a.m. and our season just ended. That’s it. You’re going to ask me about next year. Right now my biggest concern is how bad the seats are on the Allegiant flight, on that terrible plane that we’re going on to fly home tomorrow.” (link)

Colorado and Syracuse are moving forward with their efforts to play a spring football scrimmage. A Syracuse spokesperson confirms to the Syracuse Post-Standard’s Javon Edmonds that the compliance departments from both schools have filed paperwork with the NCAA. The Oversight Committee could make a decision when it meets on April 10. Orange HC Fran Brown: “For us to be the first to do it at two historic schools would mean a lot. Two African-American men, too. To have the opportunity of doing that means a lot. Especially with [Deion Sanders] being an icon.” Brown adds of more teams doing this each spring: “It will help the game. Nobody wants to have spring games anymore. Nobody wants to worry about the portal. ...I’m just confident in who I am and what I do for the players.” (link)

StubHub has filed for an IPO and plans to trade on the NYSE. Axios’ Dan Primack submits that this “could be a bellwether for how investors feel about the live events industry,” as “StubHub rival Vivid Seats has seen its stock price fall by more than 45% over the past year, and reportedly is seeking a buyer. SeatGeek remains private despite prior plans to go public via a blank-check merger, and then via an IPO.” Primack also notes StubHub “reports a $2.8M loss on $1.77B in revenue for 2024, compared to a $405M profit on $1.37B in revenue for 2023.” StubHub did not disclose an IPO target, but the New York Times previously reported it could seek to raise more than $1B.
