Saint Francis will transition to DIII and join the Presidents' Athletic Conference, with the Red Flash to continue competing in DI through 2025-26. Board of Trustees Chairman Very Rev. Joseph Lehman: “This was not an easy nor a quick decision for the Board of Trustees. The governance associated with intercollegiate athletics has always been complicated and is only growing in complexity based on realities like the transfer portal, pay-for-play, and other shifts that move athletics away from love of the game. For that reason, as a Board, we aim to best provide resources and support to our student-athletes in this changing environment that aligns with our mission, Catholic institution, and our community's expectations.” (link)

Northern Illinois AD Sean Frazier is a “prominent name expected to be in mix for the Maryland AD position,” according to Action Network’s Brett McMurphy, who notes Frazier was a finalist for the job when Damon Evans was hired in 2018. (link)

Meanwhile, Northern Illinois has released a presentation highlighting successes over the past several years, the current financial picture, the move to the Mountain West and Horizon League and more. In breaking down the Huskies’ $32.9M in revenue for FY24, the presentation notes that $8.9M came from external funding, $6.8M came via an athletic fee, $4.5M came via the Convocation Center and Huskie Stadium and $3.1M came by way of the Recreation Center. The presentation also explains part of the rationale for changing conferences was to increase visibility in emerging markets and areas with large alumni bases: “El Paso, Reno, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Albuquerque stand out as emerging markets due to their growth and regional influence, making them ideal road game destinations. These cities, along with global destinations such as San Francisco and Honolulu or scenic locales like Colorado Springs, offer fans unforgettable experiences and excellent hospitality options. Each destination provides unique opportunities to connect with supporters and create memorable moments around the game.” Huskies AD Sean Frazier: “As I always say, there's no such thing as standing still you either are moving forward or moving backward. Embracing our new athletic model is something we believe strongly gives us a fighting chance to continue our academic and athletic success. While there will be challenges along the way, the support of our fans, donors, alumni and community remains absolutely critical as we move forward, ascending to the mountaintop and expanding our horizon.” (link, link – full presentation)

Virginia AD Carla Williams says the difference in NIL for men’s hoops is “significant” compared to where it was before, adding: “We’ve had to shift the culture to one that is two feet in on competing at this level and we just had to tell [Assoc. AD for Development] Barry Parkhill go and we’ve been able to secure the funds we need to have a top 10 program.” Williams also notes Deputy AD Wally Walker filled the GM role this past year and UVA will look to fill out HC Ryan Odom’s staff, including the appointment of a new GM, this week. (link)

Notable development for the open Stanford AD job as the university has parted ways with Football HC Troy Taylor, according to Cardinal GM Andrew Luck, who notes an Acting HC may be appointed for the 2025 season. (link)

Grand Canyon President Brian Mueller comments on the future of GCU athletics being centered around basketball: "People ask me all the time, 'Are you going to start a football program?' The bottom line is that 90% of the universities that have football lose a lot of money. … When 80% of the NIL has to go to football, there's not a lot left for the other sports. So if you're a basketball person, going to a school that doesn't have football puts you in a position from a resource standpoint that other so-called mid-major schools aren't going to have. … The magic of the NCAA Tournament is so significant from a university perspective. There's nothing like it. The magic of that tournament is it brings exposure to your institution unlike almost anything else – the national championship football game, yes, but it's a lot of years before you're going to get there.” (link)

Rutgers Football HC Greg Schiano is in no rush to hire a GM, telling NJ Advance Media’s Steve Politi that “I’m comfortable with the way we’re handling it. If the right person became available, we would certainly do it. But until that right person is available, I’ll handle parts of that. … I don’t think [revenue-sharing] really changes things. It’s all relative. Because all the other people in our league are getting the same money. So what does it do? Everything just came up. The players are finally going to get what I think they deserve because the money gets to be more and more, but I don’t think relatively it changes much. If you have a great NIL, now you have a great NIL on top of revenue-share. If you don’t, then you have a little bit on top of revenue share. Everyone would like to simplify it like that, but if you’re actually in the mix, you know that it’s just as hard as it was. You just got to keep battling.” Schiano also points to his time in the NFL, noting that he “didn’t know any of [the roster/salary cap dynamics], which was a real disadvantage. I learned a ton, and I learned a ton after the fact, as well. Salary cap, agents, all those things, I feel very comfortable with that, and I think it needs to be an advantage for us.” (link); Schiano also says there are teams in the Big Ten that paid “$25M or $30M for their roster last year. I don't think they are going to take a pay cut. So, how that all gets sorted out, that's going to be the interesting part, but I don't really care." Schiano also addresses the status of transfer safety Jett Elad, and wouldn’t confirm that Elad has a $500K NIL deal hanging in the balance, noting: “Yeah, I'm never going to get into, unless I'm publicly required to reveal it, I'll never get into who is getting what. Just don't believe everything you read, is something that I learned a long time ago. Jett is a really good player. Glad he's here." (link)

Appalachian State has inked a new long-term multimedia rights agreement with Playfly. A key focus of the agreement will be the “modernization of App State's corporate partnership program, unlocking new revenue streams and further investing in the long-term success of the department. Additionally, strategic capital improvement projects are planned to enhance the facilities and overall gameday experience for fans and student-athletes alike.” (link)

The NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament is on pace for its highest viewership since 1993, according to SBJ’s Austin Karp. Through the second round, the combined average viewership across CBS, TNT, TBS and truTV is 9.4M viewers, up 3% from the same point last year. Karp adds: “Sunday was predictably the best day to date, with the four networks combining to average 10.1M viewers (+13%), highlighted by Duke-Baylor, Kentucky-Illinois and Florida-UConn. The games on Thursday/Friday averaged 8.8M viewers, a record for the first round of the tourney. That also had the most-watched opening day of the tourney on record, as Thursday’s games averaged a combined 9.1M viewers across the four networks. March Madness social media accounts are on pace to break records for total views (already pacing 12% better than 2024). The most-viewed social posts to date this tourney were Derik Queen’s buzzer beater for Maryland to reach the Sweet 16 and McNeese State basketball manager Amir Khan’s walkout intro with the team.” (link)

Games across ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU averaged 367K viewers during this year’s NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament first round. SBJ’s Austin Karp notes that figure is down 22% from 471K last year but up 43% from 257K in 2023. Connecticut’s win over Arkansas State on Saturday was the most-watched, averaging 1.1M viewers on ABC. Karp notes that makes it the “third-best, first-round women’s tourney game on record. On Friday, Tennessee-USF averaged 684K viewers on ESPN, which is the second-best weekday first-round women’s tourney game yet. The first round also had 1.2B minutes consumed across all networks, second-best all-time for the first round, behind only 2024. (link)

The NCAA Wrestling Championships on ESPN averaged 703K viewers with a peak of 806K. The average viewership is up 72% YoY, making it the most-watched finals since 2017 and third most-watched in the last 15 years. (link)

FIU football student-athlete Marquez Tatum alleges a “systematic administrative failure following his injury, claiming the university obstructed his medical redshirt waiver and jeopardized his collegiate athletic career,” according to Heitner Legal Founder Darren Heitner, who adds: “FIU must be held accountable.” Heitner contends in a letter that Tatum “encountered a series of deliberate misrepresentations and administrative negligence that have fundamentally undermined his athletic opportunities.” To wit, “upon suffering a broken arm, Mr. Tatum was explicitly assured by FIU's head athletic trainer, Dustin West, that his medical waiver paperwork would be processed and approved. … Contrary to these assurances, FIU's Compliance office never actually filed the medical redshirt waiver; provided contradictory and evasive communications regarding his status; and refused to submit required paperwork for his medical redshirt and JUCO year of eligibility.” Furthermore, Heitner alleges Tatum was “inappropriately pressured to return to practice before full recovery, even being instructed to participate using only one side of his body to accommodate his injured arm. … Mr. Tatum is pursuing all legal remedies to rectify the administrative errors, seek proper processing of his medical redshirt waiver and hold FIU accountable for its systematic failures.” (link)

Former Auburn men’s basketball star Chuck Person, who was ensnared in the FBI probe into college hoops as the Tigers’ Assoc. HC, tells Sportico’s Daniel Libit he harbors no ill will toward the school or HC Bruce Pearl. In fact, Person says Pearl invited him to a game this season, but Person declined, noting that “I still feel some kind of way.” Libit adds that Person “declined to comment on the case or its disposition, opting instead to keep his first public remarks more optimistic—and less controversial. He said he was ‘not surprised’ by the Tigers’ triumphs in the years since he departed, and would expect it to continue.” (link)

TCU AD Mike Buddie underscores the importance of maintaining success in football, telling reporters the goal is “set ourselves apart from everybody else in our league so that when the next iteration of college football armageddon happens, we have a chair when the music stops. We want a chair with Ohio State and we want a chair with Alabama and nobody knows what that looks like. … What I do know is Cincinnati, UCF, West Virginia – anybody who's made the jump to this league – didn't make it because they just had a treasure chest of money. They made it because they were good in football. And so when this next iteration of things happens, we need to make sure that we've been really good in football.” Buddie also talks about the factors that go into evaluating coaches. “For me, the first one is understanding their reality, defining the reality. If we're investing half the amount of allotted scholarships and paying underneath the market value, my expectation for that sport might be like, 'Hey, if you can finish in the top half of the Big 12, you will have killed it,' like, that's wonderful. And then in other sports where you're investing at a high level, you've got a great facility and historic success, you better not be happy finishing in the top half. … I think any coach that I've ever terminated would tell you they knew it was coming because you're going to have conversations that lead into anything to say, ‘Hey, here's an expectation. This is what I believe you should be. How can I help you get to that point?’ Then 18 months later, you're not there, then the conversation is, ‘Hey, [we] probably need to move in another direction." Yesterday was the deadline for defendants in Johnson v. NCAA to file motions to dismiss the third amended complaint, “which more clearly targets the test developed by the Third Circuit Court of Appeals for college athlete employment,” according to Boise State professor Sam Ehrlich, who adds: “Duke University filed a first one individually, arguing that they don't have sufficient ties to Pennsylvania for E.D. Pa. to assert personal jurisdiction over them, and that either they should be dismissed or that the Duke athlete plaintiff's claim should be moved to [a North Carolina federal court]. … Tulane also argues that there's no personal jurisdiction for a lawsuit against them in Pennsylvania (as well as arguing that the claims are unsupported by the law).” Others to file include Cornell, Arizona, Notre Dame, Purdue, Oregon, Marist, Villanova, Sacred Heart, Lafayette and Fordham. Ehrlich adds: “I should mention that most/all of these schools are also asking to join the NCAA's pleading.” Links to each filing inside. (link)

Rutgers football student-athlete Jett Elad has filed a lawsuit against the NCAA to seek an injunction that would block the NCAA from enforcing a rule that bars his eligibility. Elad, who has played at Ohio, Garden City Community College and UNLV, has competed in four seasons in five years, including the one season he spent at the junior college level with Garden City. Sportico’s Michael McCann: “Rutgers petitioned the NCAA to waive enforcement of the five-year rule, but the complaint says the NCAA denied the request. Rutgers has appealed the NCAA’s decision and the appeal is pending. Elad worries that if he doesn’t join spring practices, Rutgers will ‘replace him on the roster with another player and he will lose the opportunity to play for Rutgers next season.’” Spring practices, the complaint continues, “are critical to both the team and Elad, as they would facilitate his integration into the team’s overall strategy and defensive play and enable Elad to develop a rapport with the Rutgers coaching staff and teammates.” At stake for Elad is a potential $500K NIL deal. An NCAA spokesperson tells McCann it “stands by its eligibility rules, including the five-year rule,” and the “NCAA is making changes to modernize college sports but attempts to alter the enforcement of foundational eligibility rules—approved and supported by membership leaders—make a shifting environment even more unsettled.” A hearing is set for April 3. The NCAA on Friday filed its opening brief in the appeal of Pavia v. NCAA, and Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter breaks down some of the finer points: “This is an interesting brief to read, in terms of how the NCAA’s arguments about what is the defining feature of college sports have changed over time. It used to be that the athletes were ‘amateurs’ (i.e. not paid). Now it’s only that the athletes are also college students. I agree that’s really the only difference between college sports & leagues like the NFL etc. But if that’s the defining feature, it should mean any college student can play college sports. Makes it harder to defend eligibility rules that prohibit certain students from playing.” Winter cites the following passage from the brief: “Multiple student-athletes have filed follow-on actions seeking to extend their exhausted eligibility, often citing nothing more than the decision below in support of their claims; and more cases are sure to come. Cases like these threaten to erase the defining feature of college sports — that it is played by athletes who are college students. The Court should promptly reverse and restore the judicial consensus upholding eligibility rules under the antitrust laws.” The NCAA cites comments made by Pavia to Paul Finebaum that suggest that Pavia is not a “college student” in the traditional sense. Pavia to Finebaum, via the brief: “In order for me to come to Vanderbilt, I had to graduate from New Mexico State. And I was doing my biology degree at New Mexico State but in order to graduate and come here to Vanderbilt, I had to change my degree to individualized studies. So when I talk about all eggs in one basket, it’s all eggs in one basket. It’s like my last time. And I told Coach Lea when I first got here, ‘It’s my last year, I graduated. I don’t need to go to class. It’s just football.’” (link, link); Full brief. (link)

North Texas Women’s Basketball HC Jason Burton comments on the team being locked into a road game for the third round of the WNIT because of previously scheduled events: “We have to get to the point where we don’t schedule things in the Super Pit until mid-April. We have two really good teams in men’s and women’s basketball.” The UNT men’s team will travel to Stillwater to take on Oklahoma State in the NIT despite being the higher seed, and Burton contends: “The men should be playing at home, and the women should have that opportunity in these tournaments. We have to do something to fix that.” (link)

MoffettNathanson’s Michael Nathanson and Robert Fishman join Puck’s John Ourand for a deep dive into the streaming wars, the fluctuating landscape of sports media rights, and what’s next for ESPN’s Flagship, among other topics. Fishman notes that the amount of engagement on Netflix is “unparalleled compared to the other platforms outside of YouTube. So, the opportunity to monetize that engagement base…in a completely different way by forcing advertisers to buy not just the NFL game, but all the other content on their network, it allows these companies and will allow Netflix to really monetize this engagement even better. And they're at the very early stages of this process right now.” Nathanson tells Ourand the firm believes there are 67M paid cable subscriptions currently, and Fishman adds: “We do not think this is the the moment that the pay-TV bundle completely unravels. We think [ESPN] will – and your reporting suggests – price this in a way that the pay-TV existing subscribers [won’t] cut their cord just for ESPN Flagship. So, can it be a product that brings in some incremental subscribers that are not there today? Hopefully. It depends on how good the product is and it depends on how aggressive they want to be on pricing.” Nathanson explains ESPN’s balancing act involves attracting the 63M households (based on 110M U.S. households) not paying for cable to buy Flagship without disturbing the 67M households that are in the bundle. “But in one or two or three years if this keeps trending the way it does, maybe they get more aggressive on price and that’s when Robert and I revisit the floor on pay-TV.” Asked about that floor, which MoffettNathanson previously tabbed at 50M, Nathanson explains “always had a clause around it, which was we reserve the right to revisit the floor if we see behavior that’s irrational or not in line with our previous thinking, and we’ve been seeing more and more strategies that didn’t sync up with what we thought the floor was five years ago.” (link)

The Trump administration is planning to move the nation’s $1.7T federal student-loan portfolio from the U.S. Department of Education to the Small Business Administration, “whose staff is simultaneously being cut by 43%,” according to The Chronicle of Higher Education’s Katherine Mangan. Institute for College Access and Success SVP Jessica Thompson criticized the move, saying in a written statement: “With no clear strategy, the administration has decimated staffing and oversight capabilities at both agencies while simultaneously announcing its intent to immediately transfer a more than $1.5-trillion loan portfolio between them. This can only result in borrowers experiencing erratic and inconsistent management of their federal student loans. Errors will prove costly to borrowers and ultimately, to taxpayers.” The SBA said the reorganization “is targeted to reverse the broad and costly expansion of the SBA under the Biden Administration.” (link)
