#8: The Office for Civil Rights has initiated Title VI investigations into 45 universities “amid allegations that these institutions have violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act (1964) by partnering with ‘The Ph.D. Project,’ an organization that purports to provide doctoral students with insights into obtaining a Ph.D. and networking opportunities, but limits eligibility based on the race of participants,” according to the Department of Education, whose secretary, Linda McMahon, says: “The agency has already launched Title VI investigations into institutions where widespread antisemitic harassment has been reported and Title IX investigations into entities which allegedly continue to allow sex discrimination; today’s announcement expands our efforts to ensure universities are not discriminating against their students based on race and race stereotypes. Students must be assessed according to merit and accomplishment, not prejudged by the color of their skin. #3: Cal Poly Humboldt AD Nick Pettit has laid out the impact of potential budget cuts on athletics’ $6.1M budget, with projections ranging from a 5% reduction to a 38% cut. Some of the challenges include “relying upon one-time funding to support the deficit, the reinstated wrestling program which isn’t currently in the base funding, maintaining revenue for scholarships, dependency on student enrollment growing and recruitment to fill vacancies within the program.” In the event of a 5% cut, the impact is limited to reductions in recruiting, swapping buses for vans for travel and more. At a 16-22% reduction “if they aren’t able to secure funding for the wrestling program, they listed mental health support, moving assistant coaches from 12-month contracts to 10-month contracts and ‘significant’ reductions to equipment as possible outcomes.” A full 34-38% cut would see reductions in full-time staff and potentially programs as $1M would leave the budget. Pettit reiterated there have been no discussions about which programs to cut as these are projections of budgetary reductions. (link)
