Conversations continue regarding the ability of schools without football teams to pay more in rev-share for their basketball programs, and Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger notes the “spending issue looms as a serious enough threat that it has emerged as a critical discussion point and agenda item within power league administrative meetings in the SEC, Big Ten, ACC and Big 12 — something SEC commissioner Greg Sankey and other high-ranking officials acknowledged this month in interviews with Yahoo Sports.” Sankey tells Dellenger: “People have raised the issue with me and they are raising it more frequently right now. It’s something we are having conversations about at every meeting. I’m confident in our schools’ ability to compete, but it does raise a set of questions.” Based on the numbers that have been floating around, Power 4 teams will have $2-4M allocated for men’s basketball, and Houston AD Eddie Nuñez notes: “Big East schools next year can pay $6M or more to their basketball team, and that’s a game-changer.” Kansas State AD Gene Taylor adds: “I know our coaches are worried. They’ve openly talked about it. That’s where the rumors start to fly about circumventing the cap. Are we going to go back under the table again?” Even blue blood men’s hoops programs like Kentucky, North Carolina or Kansas will likely place a heavy emphasis on football, and Jayhawks AD Travis Goff says: “At a place where football matters, we can’t justify $7-9M to be shared with basketball.” Meanwhile, Missouri Valley Commissioner Jeff Jackson doesn’t exactly feel sorry for P4 teams’ predicament: “I don’t have a whole lot of empathy for the A4’s financial concerns. Welcome to our world.” (link)
|
CBS’ Matt Norlander: “What Ross writes has been discussed for a year+ by ADs + commissioners. Big East stands to benefit as a result of the House settlement. Its programs will be well-equipped vs. other high-majors playing second-fiddle in football-first leagues. Ain't no fun when the rabbit got the gun.” CBS’ Gary Parrish adds: PREDICTION: There is NO WAY the SEC and Big Ten will ever let the Big East outspend them in basketball. If that becomes a reality, it won't be for long. If they have to change the rules again, or just break them, they will. But they'll never operate from a disadvantaged place.” (link)

Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock tells Tech Sideline’s Andy Bitter the Hokies will likely distribute revenue among sports as follows: 75% football, 15% men’s basketball, 5% women’s basketball and 5% for Olympic sports. Babcock also says the Hokies underestimated the men’s basketball NIL market this year, noting Clemson was about 70% higher on NIL than Tech; however, the perception that NIL money was diverted from basketball to football last year, Babcock insists, is false: “No. That’s what you get for reading social media.” The football program needs to see noticeable improvement this season, and Babcock explains what that means: “I think you’ll know it and I’ll know it. We watch the same games. It is not an ultimatum of this many victories. Everybody and their brother knows that we underachieved last year and we certainly need to turn that around." For this year’s spring game, the Hokies don’t plan to broadcast an 11-on-11 scrimmage and instead will put together clips and interviews from the game in-house in collaboration with the ACC Network. Babcock also says the school is working to extend its partnership with Nike by five years. Though Babcock didn’t give financial details, Bitter notes: “Don’t expect it to break the bank. That market has changed in recent years, with less competition. Metallica will visit Lane Stadium in May, and Babcock anticipates the concert will bring in around $1M. Asked about his own job security, Babcock tells Bitter: “In Year 12, it’s not a real good situation to underachieve in football and men’s basketball in the same year. So that wasn’t good enough. I’m where the buck stops and it weighs very heavily on me to make sure that changes." (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown sheds some light on Saint Francis’ decision to move from DI to DIII and points out that both the NEC and DI landscape have changed over the years. “You don’t typically think of the NEC as some sprawling league like the Big 12, Big Ten or AAC. But over the last few years, a few schools within an easy drive, like Mount Saint Mary’s, have left the league for other conferences. New additions, like Stonehill and Chicago State, extend the league’s footprint and force Saint Francis into multiple long bus rides for conference play.” VP for Communications and Marketing Erin McCloskey tells Brown that it’s “tough to be a student when you’re getting home from a bus trip at 4 AM and then have to go to class that morning.” McCloskey also explains that “ultimately, we wanted to make sure that we [the university] were in a position to decide how we want to approach college athletics, and not have outside forces dictate that decision for us.” Brown adds that “McCloskey told me that the school feels it is very important to articulate that athletics is still going to be an important part of the school’s identity, and that the reclassification decision should not be seen as a retreat from college sports in general.” McCloskey: “We want to offer a premier DIII experience. We’re planning on competing for championships.” (link)
|
Marist will opt into revenue-sharing under the terms of the House settlement, but Red Foxes AD Tim Murray says the university has “flexibility” to change that decision in the event that something unforeseen happens. Murray expects there will be no issues with the roster limits, noting that rosters will comply with the regulations by “natural attrition” from graduating athletes, the transfer portal and other factors. Currently, Murray adds, “most” rosters are already under the maximum. (link)

Grambling State has partnered with College Sports Solutions to conduct a comprehensive operational review of its athletics program. Tigers AD Trayvean Scott: "This is about elevating every aspect of the student-athlete experience while ensuring the long-term sustainability of our programs. CSS understands the landscape of HBCU athletics and the competitive demands of today's college sports environment. Their insights will be invaluable as we strive to build a model athletics program grounded in integrity, innovation, and impact." (link)

Miami (OH) inks a four-year, $2.64M partnership to become the “official university and education partner” of the Cincinnati Bengals. The agreement will “provide Miami students with exclusive opportunities with the team” and will “offer Miami marketing opportunities,” including being featured on the Bengals’ website and app, and in Paycor Stadium “through sideline LED corner signage, red zone partnership and on more than 1,600 TVs throughout the stadium. Miami will be able to “use Paycor for university events,” though specifics on event types have yet to be specified. The Bengals “agreed to provide the Who Dey mascot, two Ben-Gal cheerleaders, field access and a stadium tour during limited VIP events with Miami,” and it’s “possible” the stadium could “continue as the home of the University of Cincinnati-Miami Victory Bell football rivalry if it extends beyond the next scheduled game in 2026. Syracuse Football HC Fran Brown expects the NCAA to decide by the end of the week whether the Orange can play a spring scrimmage against Colorado. “We should get some news back in the next two days. This will be great for college football. We need this. Just think, when we get to play Colorado – because I’m saying ‘we,’ I’m trying to speak ahead – it’ll be a packed stadium. We’ll get a chance to compete. Now we’re not going to do a full game, all those things like that, but we’re going to treat it just like a regular scrimmage would normally be. And then me and [Buffs HC Deion Sanders] are just going to help each other, get our teams better so we can go out and compete. But it’s good for the fans, it’s good for college football. … It also allows us to go through a couple of our financial literacy courses that we have set up with Coach Prime and myself. It gives us an academic day where we’ll get guys to have the opportunity to learn different study habits. We get both staffs to be able to sit in there and learn from each other, to be able to take the best skills, the best details and all of the best coaching habits that we can get to.” (link)

Oklahoma State Football HC Mike Gundy suggests reviving the Bedlam series with Oklahoma in the form of a spring game: “Honestly, for us, we should do a home and home with OU in the spring. … They should come here on the 19th. I think theirs is earlier in the year. We should go down there and play a home-and-home against each other in the spring. Charge $25 a head, they can use it for NIL, we can use it for NIL. If they don’t want to do two in one spring, we can do one here this year, do it there next year, and split the gate. Because we get tired of practicing against each other.” Gundy adds that “it’s not going to be a live game. I don’t know what Coach [Brent] Venables would say, but I would be concerned with making it live just because of injury. But nobody really has live scrimmages anymore, so you make it a full thud, like we’re doing, and practice against each other. Just like in the NFL.” (link)

On top of requesting approval for an amendment diverting $25M of “estimated cost savings” for additional upgrades to Doak Campbell Stadium, Florida State is asking the Board of Governors to approve a $12M loan for a new women’s lacrosse stadium. The FSU Board of Trustees in November approved the $12M loan, which would come from the university's administrative auxiliary reserve account. That account currently has a $53M balance. (link)

The Players Era Festival intends to expand to 32 teams in 2026, and CBS’ Matt Norlander explains: “Details are still ongoing and far from finalized, but broadly speaking, here is how it would work, according to sources: In 2026, the PEF would take place over multiple weeks in the first month of the 2026-27 season, with group-stage play (a la FIFA World Cup format) probably staged in multiple cities, not just Las Vegas. After teams play in group-stage competition, the event would become a premier four-bracket concept held in Las Vegas. The idea is to bookend the college basketball season with two major events: March Madness at the end and ‘November madness’ in the beginning. … Sources said that a number of spots for the 2026 tournament will be held off and saved until the spring of 2026, in an effort to build out a 32-team event with huge brands but also teams with rosters expected to be of top-25 quality for that season.” (link)

Winthrop Intelligence & WIN AD are back in the headlines as Sportico’s Daniel Libit reports on the latest legal developments surrounding the embroiled industry data company. Key nuggets from Libit: “Drue Moore’s widow, Kelly, and their two children are now suing (business partner Robert Scott) Brooks and (tax attorney Dennis Scott) Robinson, claiming their unfounded accusations of him embezzling Winthrop funds led to Drue’s death by suicide. [...] This latest lawsuit describes Drue Moore’s final months as a frantic, anxiety-ridden struggle to appease the defendants. After being accused of improperly taking distributions from Winthrop, the lawsuit claims, Drue was ‘unduly pressured’ into resolving the matter by transferring well over $1 million to Brooks or entities under his control. To do so, the lawsuit claims, Drue liquidated his personal brokerage account, withdrew funds from educational and E-Trade accounts he had set up for his nieces, and cashed out of a ‘charity investment property’ in Nairobi, Kenya. In addition to the money, the lawsuit says that he sent Brooks multiple high-priced watches. Despite all this, Kelly Moore claims that on Jan. 3, Brooks sent Drue Moore a letter purportedly terminating his involvement with Winthrop and its affiliated entities. The letter demanded a full accounting of his personal assets and threatened criminal charges and public humiliation if Drue did not comply by Jan. 10—the day he died by suicide. The lawsuit further alleges that since then, Brooks has informed Kelly that both he and Winthrop are creditors of Moore, and that Robinson improperly transferred assets from Moore’s trusts.” Lots more, including, “Robinson declined to say who is currently running Winthrop. However, on Jan. 22, he signed the one-year renewal of Binghamton University’s WIN AD software services agreement, according to a copy of the deal obtained by Sportico.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake spent some time in Spokane to explore Gonzaga as part of his tour of the new-look Pac-12, and Mayor Lisa Brown assures him that “Gonzaga is a huge deal in Spokane.” Asked by Canzano who would get the last table in a restaurant if she and Men’s Basketball HC Mark Few walked in at the same time, Brown responds: “Mark Few is a celebrity, let’s just put it that way.” Zags AD Chris Standiford, Canzano writes, was “intentional about showing me Gonzaga’s ‘other’ sports on the tour. We slipped inside the rowing team’s training facility. It’s a massive operation with rows of machinery. After basketball, rowing is the next biggest sport in Gonzaga’s athletic department.” Before deciding to join the Pac-12, Gonzaga “was aware of its value, particularly when it came to basketball media rights and branding. One of the school’s boosters bankrolled the hiring of a high-profile consulting firm. The school engaged in exploratory conversations with other conferences, including the Big 12, in the last few years. But an offer never materialized.” When the Pac-12 eventually came calling, Standiford explains it “happened very, very quickly. We’d done all the analysis. We knew the valuations. We knew what the market said about us. For Gonzaga, it was a big deal to move beyond the private catholic, colloquial, West Coast Conference university to something else.” More. (link)

CBS’ Richard Johnson examines the future of Stanford’s football program under GM Andrew Luck’s leadership and notes that when allegations against former HC Troy Taylor came out last week, “Luck met with the team in Taylor's presence” on Thursday and “doubled down on standing by his coach. Now here we are, five days later, and Luck has fired Taylor with a statement that read, in part, ‘After continued consideration it is evident to me that our program needs a reset. In consultation with our university leadership I no longer believe that Coach Taylor is the right coach to lead our football program. … Reading between the lines, it's possible that administrators above Luck -- perhaps outgoing athletic director Bernard Muir or new school president Jon Levin -- stepped in. It's not ideal to conduct a coaching search in March, and it seems like Stanford was planning to run it back with Taylor in 2025 if none of this had come to light.” Regardless, with Luck’s name attached to the statement dismissing Taylor, Johnson points out that what Luck was hired to do “has much more executive function than simply stocking the roster.” As such, “it also should bring with it more scrutiny about Luck's role in Stanford football's future. He is the one in charge of the program, and because of that, he should also be on the hook for explaining how the program will be cleaned up no matter who the next permanent coach.” (link)

The narrative continues regarding NIL’s role in this year’s lack of March Madness cinderellas, as Oakland Men’s Basketball HC Greg Kampe tells Yahoo’s Jeff Eisenberg that it took losing standout Trey Townsend to Arizona to drive home the point that mid-majors are the de facto farm system for power-conference programs. “He’s making 20 times what I could give him this season. What do you do? You wish him well. Many of these guys are being told you’re not going to be in the NBA, so get your money now and you’ve got a chance to start your life with a little bit of a bankroll. That’s a hard thing to argue against. I can’t argue against that with my players.” The clamor about the lack of upsets this year, however, ignores the ways NIL is improving college basketball, according to Eisenberg, who points out: “Fringe NBA prospects are staying in college longer rather than chasing money in the G League or overseas. Some of this season’s most recognizable veteran stars would have been long gone in previous eras.” While that may make things tougher for mid-majors, Kampe tells Eisenberg that “we’re going to keep turning over every stone. This NCAA tournament has been a wakeup call, a slap in the face. OK, what do we do? How do we win this way? We’re going to find a counter, maybe not Greg Kampe but someone smarter than Greg Kampe at this level will figure it out.” (link)

Dr. Schatzel remains president of the university.” Trustees are slated to meet today at 5 PM to discuss personnel matters, and Green adds: “Also on Tuesday, University of Cincinnati President Neville Pinto wrote in a memo to the school that Gerry Bradley, a finalist for the UC executive vice president for academic affairs and provost, ‘is pursuing other opportunities.’ Bradley held the same post at UL but accepted the Cincinnati job last week.” (link)

+ Freshly minted UNLV Men’s Basketball HC Josh Pastner’s five-year deal will pay him an average of $960K annually. Pastner will earn a base salary of $500K this year before getting a bump to $1M for the second and third years and $1.15M for the final two years. Pastner is eligible for $50K bonuses for reaching the Final Four and winning the national championship, and he can earn $25K for winning the Mountain West regular-season title, conference title and receiving an at-large NCAA Tournament berth. A season in which the Runnin’ Rebels win 14 or more conference games will net Pastner $10K, and he would get $25K for winning Mountain West Coach of the Year and $50K for a national coach of the year award. Should Pastner leave for another school, his buyout starts at $3M in the first year and decreases by $250K each season. UNLV would owe Pastner 75% of his remaining salary for relieving him of his duties before the contract ends. (link)

If the Tigers part ways with Harper before the end of the contract, Harper would be owed 75% of her remaining pay. The Men's and Women's Basketball Oversight Committees on Tuesday proposed legislation to limit regular seasons to 32 games. If approved, the proposal would become effective beginning with the 2026-27 basketball season. Teams wouldn't be required to schedule 32 games, and the blanket waiver involving multiple-team events would remain in place for the 2025-26 season. The proposal also aligns both sports with equitable participation opportunities. Currently, men's and women's basketball teams can schedule 28 games with an additional three-game MTE for a maximum of 31 games. Teams can also choose to schedule 29 games with a two-game MTE with a 31-game maximum. Or teams can schedule 29 regular-season games without a multiple-team event included. (link)

The Football Oversight Committee “tabled the request” that would have allowed Army West Point and Navy to play an additional regular season game.” Midshipmen AD Chet Gladchuk and former Black Knights AD Mike Buddie had jointly submitted a petition to the NCAA asking for the ability to schedule a 13th regular season game because the Army-Navy Game is played six days after the College Football Playoff field is determined, meaning the game can’t figure into the selection committee’s calculus. Fox Sports EVP Jordan Bazant talks about the the upcoming College Basketball Crown and tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “For college basketball, what’s crazy is for all the revenue it generates, a lot of these student-athletes don’t get that big bowl-game experience that college football [and] their colleagues in other sports do. There are some amazing bowl games not in the CFP that provide these student athletes with amazing experiences, once-in-a-lifetime experiences – and we want to bring that to people in college basketball.” The NIT final has averaged 417K viewers for ESPN over the past three years, and Bazant says for the Crown’s first year the “No. 1 thing is how do we provide exposure for the league and the teams to bring in more sponsors? Because then you have more arms to grow the sport. You have more champions. … We’re hoping that the NCAA and all those other partners, even some of the event promoters, look at us and say, ‘Wow, these guys are great partners. Look what they’ve done. How can we continue to help them?’” With Vivid Seats offering a $500K NIL pool for the tournament, AEG President/COO of Global Partnerships Nick Baker, whose firm sold sponsorships for the event, tells Portnoy: “What is important here is that we’re seeing the goals of multiple parties achieved and this tournament is enhancing college basketball for student athletes, for fans and for brands.” (link)
