The PAC will add Saint Francis (DI) as its 13th member, beginning competition in 2026-27. Board of Trustees Chairman Very Rev. Joseph Lehman: “This was not an easy nor a quick decision for the Board of Trustees. The governance associated with intercollegiate athletics has always been complicated and is only growing in complexity based on realities like the transfer portal, pay-for-play, and other shifts that move athletics away from love of the game. For that reason, as a Board, we aim to best provide resources and support to our student-athletes in this changing environment that aligns with our mission, Catholic institution, and our community's expectations.” Commissioner Joe Onderko: “The oldest Catholic-Franciscan college in the United States, Saint Francis is a tremendous fit, both geographically and culturally, as the newest PAC member. In addition, the Red Flash athletic department shares our unique vision that academic and athletic excellence are not mutually exclusive. […] This is another key step towards our vision of the PAC continuing to build its foundation as one of the elite NCAA Division III conferences in the nation. With the addition of four new full members in the past six years, as well as recent additional varsity sport offerings, I believe the PAC has never been stronger at any point in its 70-year history.” (link, link)

PAC Commissioner Joe Onderko sat down with 93.7 The Fan’s Austin Bechtold to discuss the process of adding of the Red Flash, which began in early October when approached by a consultant and led SFU to be accepted into the league in December. Onderko says the PAC was not looking to expand, but they did fit the criteria: “Do they improve us academically and athletics? And are they a fit for us geographically and culturally? Well, I can unquestionably say yes to all four of those with regard to Saint Francis. I think if that's the case, then you are less worried about the number than you are about this is a school we want to affiliate with and if they want to affiliate with us, they feel it would be a fit, then we need to have those conversations. It's a little complicated because I think you can get in trouble chasing members just to hit a number. That's when you end up with some bad fits and you end up regretting maybe some of the decisions you've made. In this case, there was a feeling like other than the fact they're a Division I, everything about them looks like a PAC school and if they commit to being a part of Division III and a part of our culture that we think they're going to be a great fit for the PAC.” More. Extra Points publisher Matt Brown sheds some light on Saint Francis’ decision to move from DI to DIII and points out that both the NEC and DI landscape have changed over the years. “You don’t typically think of the NEC as some sprawling league like the Big 12, Big Ten or AAC. But over the last few years, a few schools within an easy drive, like Mount Saint Mary’s, have left the league for other conferences. New additions, like Stonehill and Chicago State, extend the league’s footprint and force Saint Francis into multiple long bus rides for conference play.” VP for Communications and Marketing Erin McCloskey tells Brown that it’s “tough to be a student when you’re getting home from a bus trip at 4 AM and then have to go to class that morning.” McCloskey also explains that “ultimately, we wanted to make sure that we [the university] were in a position to decide how we want to approach college athletics, and not have outside forces dictate that decision for us.” Brown adds that “McCloskey told me that the school feels it is very important to articulate that athletics is still going to be an important part of the school’s identity, and that the reclassification decision should not be seen as a retreat from college sports in general.” McCloskey: “We want to offer a premier DIII experience. We’re planning on competing for championships.” (link)

Winthrop Intelligence & WIN AD are back in the headlines as Sportico’s Daniel Libit reports on the latest legal developments surrounding the embroiled industry data company. Key nuggets from Libit: “Drue Moore’s widow, Kelly, and their two children are now suing (business partner Robert Scott) Brooks and (tax attorney Dennis Scott) Robinson, claiming their unfounded accusations of him embezzling Winthrop funds led to Drue’s death by suicide. [...] This latest lawsuit describes Drue Moore’s final months as a frantic, anxiety-ridden struggle to appease the defendants. After being accused of improperly taking distributions from Winthrop, the lawsuit claims, Drue was ‘unduly pressured’ into resolving the matter by transferring well over $1 million to Brooks or entities under his control. To do so, the lawsuit claims, Drue liquidated his personal brokerage account, withdrew funds from educational and E-Trade accounts he had set up for his nieces, and cashed out of a ‘charity investment property’ in Nairobi, Kenya. In addition to the money, the lawsuit says that he sent Brooks multiple high-priced watches. Despite all this, Kelly Moore claims that on Jan. 3, Brooks sent Drue Moore a letter purportedly terminating his involvement with Winthrop and its affiliated entities. The letter demanded a full accounting of his personal assets and threatened criminal charges and public humiliation if Drue did not comply by Jan. 10—the day he died by suicide. The lawsuit further alleges that since then, Brooks has informed Kelly that both he and Winthrop are creditors of Moore, and that Robinson improperly transferred assets from Moore’s trusts.” Lots more, including, “Robinson declined to say who is currently running Winthrop. However, on Jan. 22, he signed the one-year renewal of Binghamton University’s (DI) WIN AD software services agreement, according to a copy of the deal obtained by Sportico.” (link)

Montclair State will keep its Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse programs as NCAA varsity sports, after planning to transition them to club status this fall, thanks to financial contributions from alumni and supporters. President Jonathan Koppell: “As stewards of State funding, and the lowest-funded public institution on a per-student basis, we are forced to make tough resource allocation decisions. Making the difficult choice to move our lacrosse programs to club status was driven by financial realities. […] This cooperative model must be replicated to sustain and enrich our intercollegiate athletics programs in the fiscally-challenging environment facing higher ed.” (link)
