The Cincinnati Business Courier’s Steve Watkins checks in to see what Xavier has planned to increase revenue in anticipation of revenue-sharing and notes that along with “adjusting annual membership levels for its All For One Fund to support Musketeer athletics,” Xavier is “focusing on three key strategies to improve revenue, including raising prices.” Musketeers AD Greg Christopher indicates that “market-based increases” could be “one of Xavier’s strategies.” Watkins explains that involves “looking closely at game-day revenues, such as tickets and premium experiences,” and notes that Xavier is also “focusing its efforts on fundraising and new business opportunities.” Christopher remarked that the department is “doubling down” on the financial support Xavier has received from its supporters and through business partnerships. The Musketeers will also “reallocate athletic department resources,” though Christopher doesn’t specify how the department would do so. (link)

Seton Hall has officially opened the $55M, 13K-sq-ft Basketball Performance Center, which includes a players’ lounge and dining room, a steam room and sauna. Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Pirates AD Bryan Felt noted the men’s basketball program would receive a further boost via revenue-sharing under the House settlement: “For us, automatically it’s a help. Your supporters, your donors, your most loyal people can give those monies, those funds to the athletic department and get their tax deductions. … The university is stepping up and saying, ‘We know how important basketball is. Basketball is certainly a massive part of the identity of Seton Hall University and we want to see that be successful.’ So the school has stepped up and they’re going to be contributing to the revenue share number that we can utilize for our programs.” Felt goes on to remark that “there’s been a narrative out there that the Big East is in a great position because it’s basketball-only. I think that’s an incredibly optimistic view and I don’t think it’s the wrong one – it certainly sounds nice. But in my opinion, it would be a bit foolish for us to think automatically we’ll be in a better position. … The SEC, think they’re going to sit there and say, ‘The Big East has an advantage over us?’ And allow that to happen? That’s where the collectives are going to kick in. That’s why the collectives are going to be incredibly important at that level." Regarding the departure of Deputy AD for Revenue Generation, NIL & Strategic Initiatives Mike McBride, Felt says the Pirates are working with coaches to determine what that role looks like moving forward: “Is the next thing the general manager? It’s certainly the sexy thing; everybody is hiring one. I’m not saying we’re not doing it. I know what we do need – we need someone who can help with these negotiations and also can help when it comes to salary cap management.” More, including a look inside the new facility. (link)

+ East Texas A&M has broken ground on a new $70M Event Center that will include a ~2,500-seat arena with four locker rooms, two suites, a 40-guest loge box, video boards and more to serve as home for the Lions Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams. Further: “The area surrounding the Event Center will include a plaza, an outdoor entertainment space with a stage, a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant and more than 800 new parking spaces. The master development plan—which will be fully developed later—adds additional retail and entertainment space, including an auxiliary gym, restaurant spaces, and a hotel—all designed to create a high-energy, student-friendly environment.” AD Jim Curry: “In developing this event center—the premier event center in Northeast Texas—we know this can be a catalyst for growth, not just within our university community, but this region, the city of Commerce, Hunt County and beyond.” (link)

More from Sportico’s Daniel Libit on the embattled Winthrop Intelligence and WIN AD, as tax attorney Dennis Scott Robinson asserts: “I deny the allegations contained in the amended complaint, most especially the notion that anything that I did in furtherance of my obligations to Winthrop caused the death of Drue Moore, and I intend to vigorously defend against all allegations.” Robinson adds that Winthrop is currently “engaging independent experts and consultants” to maintain continuity of the company’s operations. Winthrop, which is also named as a defendant in the suit, is being represented by Gary Shipman, the “North Carolina-based lawyer and sports agent who recently sued the NCAA on behalf of an NC State football player seeking a fifth year of eligibility,” per Libit, and Shipman tells him: “Our job is to undertake the independent representation of Winthrop, which will include a proper investigation of the allegations made in the amended complaint, including, but not limited to, whether funds have been diverted from Winthrop by anyone. We are also in the process of engaging others that will be called upon to exercise independent judgment about all of these matters and to insure [sic] the continued operation of the Company. We regret the tragic death of Drue Moore who, as the Complaint and Amended Complaint make abundantly clear, left more questions than answers.” Shipman declined to say who was responsible for retaining him on Winthrop’s behalf but confirmed the company is his only client in the matter. Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders has agreed to a five-year, $54M contract extension. Coach Prime will earn $10M in 2025 and 2026, $11M in 2027 and 2028, and $12M in 2029. Buyout numbers, should Sanders leave before the contract expires, look like this: $12M before December 31, 2025; $10M before December 31, 2026, $6M before December 31, 2027, $4M before December 31, 2028, and $3M before December 31, 2029. Under the terms of the previous deal, Sanders’ buyout totals were $5M for leaving before December 31, 2026, and $2M for leaving before December 31, 2027. Sportico’s Daniel Libit and Kurt Badenhausen add that the contract removes a commitment of at least $5M annually for ACs and keeps the verbal accounting provision for outside income that was notably included in his previous deal. (link, link, link); Of note from the university, “Due in part to Coach Prime's engagement and the visibility he's created, applications to attend CU Boulder increased 20% from a year ago to over 67,000, including an 18% increase in applications from out-of-state. Applications from prospective students who identify as Black/African American increased 50.5%, and applications from prospective students who identify as non-white increased 29.3%.” (link); Sanders is now the fourth highest-paid coach in terms of AAV in the country behind Georgia HC Kirby Smart ($13.2M), Ohio State HC Ryan Day ($12.5M) and Clemson HC Dabo Swinney ($11.1M). Texas HC Steve Sarkisian is right behind Sanders with an average salary of $10.6M. (link)

College Athletic Management President Pat Flynn advocates for non-exclusive apparel contracts, telling Extra Points publisher Matt Brown that “all of these athletic apparel companies, they’re also trying to compete in the NIL arms race, you know? By splitting these up, the brands have a chance to do something really different and add storytelling to their NIL conversation.” Therefore, Flynn posits that it could make sense for, say, Nike to secure the apparel and uniform rights but not the footwear rights. Brown subsequently notes: “For a mid-major, athletes being able to hypothetically secure their own shoe deals could be a recruiting advantage, giving athletes an additional chance to earn money, as well as make a fashion or comfort statement on the court. If a player wanted to wear the Nike product he was getting originally, he (or the department) could still purchase those at the discounted rate, or perhaps Nike, Adidas and others would want to create an athlete influencer program to get their shoes on as many feet as possible. In a world where almost every school outside the P4 will be unable to fully fund revenue-sharing up to the House limit, finding new market-based opportunities becomes even more important. If an athlete is able to wear the shoes he or she wants to wear, and can make a little extra scratch doing it, that’s just more money the school doesn’t need to fork over from their own revenue sharing bucket.” Flynn also believes this would create a more open market, similar to the NBA, where players’ shoe endorsements run the gamut beyond just a handful of brands. New SMU AD Damon Evans was at the podium yesterday for his introductory presser. Of note: “I’ve always believed that SMU has had a brand. This brand is only going to continue to grow. This institution has that fight and that wherewithal to take it to the next level. [...] You don’t go out and get someone like (new university President) Jay Hartzell just on a whim. You have to be intentional in your approach. You don’t go out and get [SMU men’s basketball coach] Andy Enfield on a whim. It’s intentional. And when they were looking for an athletic director, I could see that intention in them. [...] I believe in the word ‘and,’ that you can be good in basketball and football and tennis and track. I don’t believe in ‘or,’ that you can have one or the other. So my goal and my drive has always been, we’re all in this. [...] I think I bring a lot of experience having been in the Big Ten and the SEC and now in the ACC, having worked at two power four conferences, I want to take that knowledge and impart that here. But believe me when I say this. I don’t have all the answers. And I know that working with them here, we will find them. [...] A lot of people will look at those changes and they’re challenges, they’re upset, they want to complain. I’m not that guy. If that’s our new environment, what I’m going to do is make sure that we adjust and adapt in a manner that’s going to position us for success.” (link)

Meanwhile, after Maryland’s exit from the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Terps HC Kevin Willard commented on his future with speculation centered on a potential move to Villanova: “I don't know what I'm gonna do, I'll just be honest with you... My biggest concern, right now... I don't know who my boss is gonna be. And that worries me, I'm just being honest... I love Maryland. But I have to take everything into consideration.” (link); The Baltimore Sun’s Taylor Lyons: “University of Maryland administrators have told at least one prominent booster for the men’s basketball program that Kevin Willard plans to leave for Villanova, but that Maryland is making a ‘last-ditch effort' to retain the coach, a source with direct knowledge of the situation told The Baltimore Sun.” (link)

Connecticut’s Board of Trustees gave the green light to Huskies AD David Benedict to ink all student-athlete endorsement & revenue share deals without their review. Athletes.org has filed an amicus brief in the House case, pointing to the lack of health & safety standards, the “certainty” of future litigation, the misuse of contracts for student-athletes due to confusion with the terms & “because of the lack of collective bargaining, the settlement is not protected under the non-statutory labor exemption that shields professional leagues from certain antitrust claims.” AO Co-Founder Brandon Copeland: “While the settlement is a start of positive change for college athlete compensation, it is only that – a starting point. There are still many concerns that need to be addressed as we take the next step into this new era of college athletics to make it a safe and sustainable ecosystem for every party who contributes to its success – especially as universities place even more emphasis on revenue growth creating misalignment with college athletes’ holistic development. [...] In the pro ranks, athletes have tools and resources to protect them, and in the college space it should be the same. Unfortunately, the system does not protect college athletes due to the self-regulating nature currently in place. With more lawsuits currently being filed against schools, conferences, and the NCAA, we are advocating for a better way. We want to ensure a sustainable future for college athletics–one without constant litigation and with safeguards for progress in college athlete compensation.” (link)

Outgoing BYU AD Tom Holmoe reflects on his faith and experiences after 20+ years leading the Cougars. On his favorite parts of the job, one of which is the annual graduation banquet: “There is not one of those champs who hasn’t had to go through the grinder, through the crucible, before they got to the end. That’s my favorite part.” He continues: “I really like the fact that we’re going to fail in athletics. There’s no person in the world that can go through life on a perfect trajectory. There’s always bumps. And in athletics, that’s really the case. ... At BYU, with over 600 student-athletes and 200 employees, there is not a day where we are not going to have a challenge. … The older I get, the more experiences I have, to be able to share with individuals, ‘You are going to be fine. This is something that’s going to take time. You might have to heal up. You might have to be out of school for a little while, but when you come back you will be stronger. You can do this.” More on his accomplishments during his tenure. (link)

“We wouldn’t have submitted it if we didn’t think there was a legitimate chance for us to get that (waiver). I think that there’s a really good chance it could happen.” That’s Colorado AD Rick George on the potential spring football scrimmage between CU and Syracuse. He continues: “I think this is a great idea for college football. You’ve got some schools out there looking at not playing a spring game. We’re looking at playing a spring game that’s going to drive more fans in here in the spring time that get excited about your program. And maybe the networks start covering more spring games and there’s a monetary value to that that schools can recoup. So I think (Sanders’) idea is brilliant, and I support it.” (link); The Buffs will replace the natural grass turf at Folsom Field with an artificial one for the first time since 1998. AstroTurf will install the new surface following May’s Bolder Boulder. (link)

Troy Deputy AD for External Operations Kyle George joins Connect’s Kristen Eargle in the latest episode of The Career Hustle and talks about the leaders that have served as mentors and the importance of taking on initiatives that he initially may not have been prepared for as a key part to driving his success. George also offers advice for young professionals aspiring to work on the external side and says: “Any way you can touch revenue. That’s the name of the game for us right now. Any way you can show that you are helping to drive revenue for your department. It may be a small incremental revenue. Showing that you made a difference and brought a positive line item for your department is really key.” When considering the next steps in his career, George prioritizes the impact it will have on his family. “These positions, it’s a lifestyle. What you’re involved with, it's not just a career, but it's actually a lifestyle choice for you and your family. And I love the fact that here at Troy my little boys get a chance to be in the stands and one day as they get older…they're going to look at those student-athletes as their best friends and role models. So that's the fun part about what we get a chance to do. For me early on, it was seeing where can I be successful, looking at who are the people I’m going to get a chance to work with. The people we work with on a daily basis, they’re our family here for it too.” Full Q&A on Connect. (link)

Playfly has released its latest FanScore report for college basketball, which indicates that “52% of college basketball viewership occurs during the regular season, yet a staggering 81% of advertising dollars are spent during the March Madness tournament. The revelation points to a substantial opportunity for brands to stretch their budgets further by crafting marketing spend investment strategies that will target avid fans throughout the regular season, in addition to March Madness. Additionally, 55% of March Madness viewers did not watch any regular-season games, reinforcing that regular-season fans are more likely to show a higher level of engagement throughout the season.” Other key insights: “Women’s college basketball viewership is up 73% compared to two seasons ago, signaling exponential growth in fan interest. Monthly viewership nearly doubles starting in January, revealing a clear seasonal spike that brands can leverage. The SEC leads all other conferences in total viewership for both men’s and women’s college basketball. Fans of women’s college basketball demonstrate especially high sponsor positivity, making them a prime target for values-based brand integrations. Success on the court not only leads to more national TV appearances, but also enhances a university’s visibility, often driving an increase in enrollment.” (link)
