Sacramento State is planning to apply this week to move from FCS to FBS, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who adds the Hornets have already filed for a waiver to compete as an independent. Thamel: “The school is planning to play football in the Big Sky for 2025, which is expected to be its last season there. If everything is approved, they’d be ineligible for the football postseason for 2025 and 2026. They'd then be football postseason eligible for the 2027 season. By transitioning as an independent, Sacramento State is positioning itself for FBS conferences.” (link)

Coastal Carolina Executive Advisor to the President/Forbes contributor Joe Moglia explains why college athletics is “a ripe hunting ground for hedge funds and private equity” and posits that “most athletic directors are ill-equipped to run businesses generating tens of millions in revenue annually.” To support his argument, Moglia cites the “ridiculous contracts that are regularly given to college football coaches. No one with any business sense would allow a major executive to lose repeatedly and then walk away with a multi-million dollar bonus buy-out, but this is something that happens regularly in Power 4 football. Agents run circles around most athletic directors when it comes to things as basic as employment contracts.” Additionally, Moglia writes: “Let’s explore the case of Xavier Lucas. He’s the latest athlete to test the limits of the NIL system. The cornerback originally committed to play for Wisconsin, then transferred to Miami [FL] after one season, despite never putting his name on the transfer portal. The fact that there’s now a dispute over whether this is allowed, as opposed to a clear set of rules about when a player can or cannot transfer as would be the case in a professional sports league, is further evidence of the lack of business know-how in college athletics.” Moglia predicts the first university to sign a PE deal will likely be one with a smaller P4 program. “They’ll approach one of these smaller programs with an offer of $150M (or more) for 51% of the say in how they run their football program. For an AD with little business experience trying to put together a winning program, this will look like a good deal. … The problem, of course, is that as soon as this deal is done, revenue growth will become the only priority.” Moglia wraps up by noting that “private equity definitely has an interest in college sports, and college football is a business, but that doesn’t mean that it has to lose its soul in the name of profit. Instead, it needs smart, responsible people ready to make some tough decisions.” (link)

A North Texas source tells JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher that the Mean Green have not had any conversations with the Pac-12 about leaving the American. Canzano also notes he asked former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson “to provide a media-rights assessment of the Pac-12’s expansion options. Thompson constructed several high-profile media rights deals over the years. He knows how TV executives think.” Thompson: “I don’t know that I’d skip over Texas to go for Memphis. I don’t know that I’d go for Memphis alone without Tulane, either. I would go with a Texas school and either Tulane or Memphis. Flying that far, you want to get at least a couple of games when you’re out there.” Meanwhile, Canzano reports UNLV is still on the table. “I was told by a source that the Pac-12 had re-engaged with the Runnin’ Rebels a couple of weeks ago. Will anything come of it? We’ll see. I find the leadership dynamic in Las Vegas puzzling. The university president resigned, and the regents appear to be calling the shots. Is there a master plan? Or is UNLV just flying by the seat of its pants? Remember, UNLV was invited to join the Pac-12 last year and pledged itself to the Mountain West.” Thompson believes that if UNLV was going to join the Pac-12, it already would have. Canzano’s top three choices would be “UNLV, Texas State, and Memphis…followed by a gap…and the others.” (link)

President Donald Trump announced a sweeping series of tariffs yesterday that starts with a baseline 10% across-the-board levy on all imports, effective April 5. Certain nations will be hit with what Trump called a “discounted reciprocal tariff.” The higher rates are for nations the White House considers bad actors on trade. For example, duties will be 24% on Japan and 20% on the European Union, effective April 9. A new 34% tariff on China will add to previous duties, like the 20% tariff Trump imposed over fentanyl. The base tariff rate on Chinese imports will be 54%, before adding tariffs imposed during Joe Biden’s presidency or Trump’s first term. Beijing said it would take measures in response to the new tariffs. Canada and Mexico are excluded from the reciprocal tariff measure, although they are still subject to plans to impose 25% tariffs on most imports to the U.S. for what Trump says is their role in fueling the fentanyl crisis and illegal immigration. Additionally, a 25% tariff on all foreign-made autos is in effect as of midnight this morning. (link); The tariffs also include a 46% tax on Vietnam, where several brands, including Nike and Adidas, manufacture goods. Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams reports that factories in Vietnam manufactured 50% of all Nike Brand footwear in FY24, “by far its largest market. Factories in Vietnam also manufactured 28% of all Nike Brand apparel, also its largest market. … Indonesian factories accounted for 27% of Nike footwear in 2024, according to the filing, which put it in front of China and behind Vietnam. Trump’s announcement included a 32% tariff on Indonesian goods. The third most important country for manufacturing Nike clothing was Cambodia, at 15% of the company’s apparel. Iowa Football HC Kirk Ferentz explains his approach to the 105-player scholarship limit: "It turns out we're in the minority. I didn't take any surveys or do any surveys back in the fall, but we just let our guys know in December if we couldn't guarantee 105 spots, we told our players that and allowed them to go on visits and still be part of the team and still go to the bowl and all that. But, I just think we were all in agreement staff-wise that the right thing to do was let guys know and be transparent with them. We've had a handful of guys that know right now they don't have a guarantee that chose to stay here this spring instead of go out and find places, but it turns out nobody else is doing that." Ferentz adds that he told his son, Steven, an AC at South Dakota, to “wait until the end of April and get your net out and catch whoever falls through, because apparently that's what's going to go on." As for the Hawkeyes’ current roster, Ferentz says: “We’re pretty much there [at 105]. The hard discussions have already taken place. Not to be critical, but if I would make a recommendation, it would have been nicer if they'd stair-stepped it down, given us a year to get to 105, kind of going. But it is what it is, so we've dealt with that. So, I think our roster is pretty much where we need it to be right now. It's pretty much under control." (link)

Michigan State is under investigation for alleged NCAA recruiting violations under former Football HC Mel Tucker, according to President Kevin Guskiewicz, who tells the Detroit News’ editorial board that the issues are ongoing from a few years ago. Guskiewicz did not indicate the level of seriousness of the alleged violations but noted: “We're trying to make the case that this is a whole new coaching staff.” Guskiewicz also said he has a meeting next week on the NCAA issue, so he didn't know "where it's landing." He declined to elaborate further. (link)

College Hockey Insider’s Mike McMahon comes out against hosting on-campus regionals because “I don’t think it helps ‘grow the game.’ I actually think it would shrink the game. There are unintended consequences to every decision, and complete on-campus regionals will likely lead (in my opinion) to less television coverage. ESPN is not going to send eight production crews to eight different locations on one week’s notice.” Furthermore, “from a competitive standpoint, I don’t like the idea of giving a No. 2 seed a home game over a No. 3 seed. There isn’t usually enough that separates those teams in the Pairwise for me to be comfortable giving that No. 2 seed a home game — which is a significant advantage — over a No. 3 seed.” Instead, McMahon wonders if there is room for a hybrid model in which the top four seeds would host the 13-16 seeds in the first round, with the other teams all playing at neutral sites. “The regional finals would all be at neutral sites, piggybacked to maximize attendance. If a team is hosting one of the neutral sites, they are NOT guaranteed to go to that regional. Under the current format, a team is guaranteed a home site because of staffing. It’s a misconception that it’s for ‘attendance.’ It’s not. It’s because the host school has to staff that regional and operate it. … Even though I’m not in favor of complete on-campus regionals for some of the reasons I stated, I’m OK giving the tournament some on-campus flavor. I just want to make sure that advantage is reserved for only the top seeds.” (link)

Opendorse has released a new report breaking down what comes next in the player compensation era, which notes that four distinct revenue streams have emerged; collegiate, collective, commercial and consumer. Based on information from more than 20 Power 4 schools, Opendorse pegs the average revenue-share for P4 programs to be $19.5M, of which $12.7M is designated for football, $4M is earmarked for men’s basketball, $1.2M will go toward women’s basketball and $1.5M will be set aside for other sports. Among Group of 6 leagues, the average total is $4.8M with $3.3M, $920K, $345K and $242K being distributed to football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and other sports, respectively. Regarding the future of collectives, Opendorse predicts that those who survive will “likely find value in ancillary services, such as marketing support, bonus distributions or compensating international student-athletes. … Certain programs will direct donors to give to a preferred collective so they can stockpile funds outside their collegiate allotment. And for collectives serving as marketing agencies, those that generate significant fair market value commercial opportunities will excel in the new era.” The consumer revenue stream accounts for less than 1% of all NIL funding, and Opendorse submits that “organized, mandatory, university-led efforts like price adjustments and fees will add millions to the rev-share war chest. But as fan contributions grow in importance – directly and indirectly – colleges and collectives must balance excitement and engagement with frustration and fatigue.” Full report. (link)

Lindenwood President John R. Porter joins AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown at the 2025 NCAA Convention to discuss his vision for an educational ecosystem and offer insight into how a business mindset can transform higher education. Porter, who spent 33 years at IBM leading efforts such as strategic outsourcing, also reflects on how the leadership lessons instilled in him through that portion of his career and a lifelong passion for serving students led to the perfect opportunity with Lindenwood. Porter tells Brown he wants to create the Lindenwood Education System LES, for students so that once they get in they don’t have to go anywhere else. “If you want to get an electrical certificate, HVAC or beauty, you can do that, but if you decide a couple years later, hey, I want to get a two-year associates degree, we’ve got Ancora. If you want to get a four-year degree, you go to Lindenwood. My next acquisition, I’m looking at a nonprofit university that’s got 40 PhD programs. Once you get into the Lindenwood Education System, you can stay in it forever because everything’s there.” Porter goes on to explain athletics features prominently in the school’s long-term strategic plan, noting that “we’re building a campus plan right now where I want to put money into our academic buildings, I want to put it in our stadium, I want a new arena. … Students love going to athletic games. That’s part of the experience and we want to make it a great experience. We're not just going to show up. + Iowa on April 10 will celebrate the dedication of the Nagle-Duda Gymnastics & Spirit Squads Training Center, which features competition-style beams, vault runways, uneven bars and a floor-exercise space. In addition to nearly 21K square feet of practice space, the $20M facility houses locker rooms, meeting and athletic training rooms, office space and a multi-purpose room. (link)
+ Cal will move forward with a renovation of its softball facility once the season ends. The project will include a 30,500-square-foot, two-story precast concrete structure that will house the bullpen, concourse and press box behind home plate; 1,511 permanent seats on the new concourse that extends out and surrounds the field; 8,500 square feet of enclosed spaces, including locker rooms, a press box, lounges and a training room; an LED scoreboard display (approximately 35x20 feet) installed in the outfield that will face spectator seating to the southwest; new fine-grained aggregate material in the infield; and synthetic turf in the outfield (replacing existing grass). The project is estimated to take 16-18 months to complete, and the Golden Bears are expected to resume playing at the Cal Softball Field at the start of the 2027 season. (link)

The American has unanimously approved a performance-based revenue-share model for men’s and women’s basketball tournament units. Under the new model, schools that earn units during the NCAA basketball tournament in a particular season receive 100% of the value of those units for one year with the remaining payments to then be shared equally among all members of the conference. SBJ’s Ben Portnoy notes the “measures passed by the AAC will take effect such that Memphis’ men’s team and South Florida’s women’s squad will receive payouts related to their respective 2025 tournament appearances in next year’s conference distribution.” (link)

ESPN’s Dan Wetzel and Pete Thamel speak with several individuals who are skeptical about the efficacy of the House settlement’s NIL enforcement mechanism. St. John’s Men’s Basketball HC Rick Pitino remarks: "I think it's a flawed system before it gets started. Totally flawed." Purdue Men’s Basketball HC Matt Painter adds: “We have zero trust.” Former (and infamous) Miami (FL) supporter Nevin Shapiro asserts that "this is not the way to regulate this. I applaud them for giving an effort, I guess, but this is not practical. There's one million ways to circumvent it." Wetzel and Thamel go on to note that not only has an NCAA system never effectively prevented cheating, an FBI probe into men’s hoops wound up flaming out. As such, they ask: “If neither the FBI nor the NCAA enforcement staff could do much, why would anyone think this new entity will? … Then there is the challenge of figuring out whether a player is being paid the proper amount for a deal. A deal that might seem too generous to, say Caitlin Clark before her junior season at Iowa, might actually turn out to be a bargain. Or as an old axiom goes: Something is worth what somebody is willing to pay for it.” On that point, (Kansas Men’s Basketball HC Bill) Self says: "I actually think in theory it's good," but "it's hard to imagine how someone can [define] fair market value because to me, the fair market value is what a company or an organization sees that individual's worth as." Purdue AD Mike Bobinski calls it the “curse of this business” that when a new rule is put in place, people don’t say that’s “‘what we'll have to do.' The first thing they say is, 'How do we get around it? How do we bend it to our purposes or our objectives?' That has to change." (link)

Johnson v. NCAA plaintiff’s attorney Paul MacDonald talks with The Athletic’s Seth Emerson about why he believes student-athletes should be designated as employees and submits that “rules set at the athletic department and coach levels seem to be trending stricter and more extensive in anticipation of revenue-sharing under the House settlement.” Employment law attorney Marc Edelman adds that on one hand, it is “pretty foolish” for coaches to implement overly strict rules” on a number of grounds, including the fact it only strengthens the argument that the individuals on the football team operate under the constraints of the coach. This is a constraint that no other students at the university would operate under. On the other hand, it’s only one more over-reaching step that’s not likely to put the college athletes over the goal line for proving control. That goal line had been met a long time ago.” Emerson notes that one argument schools will make is that “by attending any school, athletes subject themselves to personal conduct and honor codes. So the coaches putting in rules by themselves are employee-defining, according to Josh Nadreau, an employment lawyer in Massachusetts.” Nadreau, who is advising some athletic departments, including one in the ACC and another in the Big East, explains: “When I’m advising folks, I’d say focus on the level and things that you need to control to make your team successful and less on sort of other things that people who don’t have the same interest as you will use as a factor to try to put another coin on the side of scale on employment.” As far as the House settlement’s impact on student-athlete employment, Nadreau submits: “These issues are long from over. In some circles, I think there’s thought that the House settlement will be a reset point. I don’t think so.” (link)

Multiple industry sources have indicated to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner that the “Pac-12’s likely [media] valuation range is $7M per school per year on the lowest end and $12M per school if everything breaks just right with the number of bids and the structure of the deal.” Now that the league has a “start-up mentality,” Wilner proposes four ways the league could reexamine its football scheduling strategy and thereby maximize its media value. The first is to start the season in full on Labor Day weekend. “The Sunday and Monday of Labor Day weekend are there for the taking with no NFL, but college football has been slow to occupy the space. Just two games are scheduled for Aug. 31 next season (South Carolina-Virginia Tech and Notre Dame-Miami), and there’s only one lined up for Labor Day itself (TCU-North Carolina). Projecting out to 2026 and beyond, the Pac-12 would have numerous broadcast windows available for non-conference games. Or it could take a bold approach and slot high-level conference matchups (think: Washington State-Boise State) into the open real estate.” Wilner also suggests taking better advantage of Friday nights and Thanksgiving Eve and considering Sunday evenings. On the latter: “The Hotline’s most radical idea might prove too aggressive for the Pac-12, but it’s worth considering a few kickoffs each season on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. … Avoid Sunday night at all costs if the (Kansas City) Chiefs are playing the (Dallas) Cowboys; but take your shot if the (Indianapolis) Colts are facing the (Minnesota) Vikings. Fox could promote the game during its afternoon NFL broadcast and use it to pump the Big Ten or Big 12 game scheduled for the following Friday. We know at least one subset of the football audience — the gamblers — would love having a Pac-12 game on Sunday night.” (link)

Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette McGlade tells NBC Sports’ Nicole Auerbach that the distribution of women’s March Madness units “eliminates the argument that there’s no revenue generated in the sport of women’s basketball, and that has been an Achilles heel for the women’s championship and women’s basketball.” Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman adds: “There’s a symbolism that I don’t think can be lost on anybody — the fact that women’s basketball is being treated more seriously.” Ackerman also notes that it’s not an accident that this new revenue stream began right as college sports are set to enter the revenue-sharing era and asks: “How will schools balance the interests of their respective sports? How will they fundraise for sports if those dollars are not coming from generated athletics revenue? This is the backdrop. This isn’t happening in a vacuum. (The unit) could boost what would otherwise be available to women’s basketball through revenue sharing. … But any school not at the top level still has work to do in terms of figuring out a revenue pathway, fan development and how to be successful on the court as the cost of doing business goes up. That’s reality. Do I think there’s reason to be optimistic (about women’s basketball)? I think there is, but there is a need to temper it with the reality of how all sports, including women’s basketball, are going to be impacted by the new model.” (link)

Connecticut AD David Benedict weighs in on the two-site NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament regionals, which saw the Huskies travel to Spokane last weekend: “I'd love for the people making these decisions to try to explain what the competitive equity piece is in the decision-making process. Having been a part of, fortunately, many Final Fours now, I don't know how people don't factor and take into consideration — regardless of whether it's UConn or anybody else — that these are the most important games that some of our student-athletes will ever have an opportunity to compete in. There should be some sort of competitive equity in how those teams are positioned so that they can all be at their best. I don't think the current setup allows for that. Our kids will get to sleep at 2 o'clock Eastern time. They have to get up, travel all day [to Tampa], and right away you're into all the different requirements that they have for you [at the Final Four]. And we're the last team playing. It's a disadvantage and you're traveling all the way across the country.” Benedict acknowledges that the rationale was based on attendance concerns but argues that “they weren't putting the regions in the right places, where there is support for women's basketball. … Are you making the decision based on who is giving you the best deal to come to their city, or are you looking to put it in a place where you're going to get the support you need? ... We're rarely asked for our opinion at UConn. They come to us afterward and ask what they can improve on. I'm not sure if that's just a formality or if they actually utilize the information. I would suggest it's a formality." More. (link)

Iowa is reconsidering its methods of team travel and nonconference scheduling, among other spending areas, as it prepares for revenue-sharing, according to Hawkeyes AD Beth Goetz, who explains: “We’ll take a look at how all of our teams travel. Certainly there’s some sort of standard for how some of our revenue sports move around, and that’ll continue. But I think we’re just going to try to be as resourceful as we can, and some of that has to do with how you schedule for other sports.” Deputy AD for Strategic Initiatives/COO Joe Parker adds: “Every time we put a team on the road, the most efficient way to do it is by bus. Next is commercial aircraft. And then there’s some teams that we just have to simply choose to charter. … There’s big cost-saving opportunities there if we can apply that level of discipline.” As it relates to holding concerts in Kinnick Stadium to drive revenue, Goetz notes that “for different reasons and different times, it sort of ebbs and flows. And some of that has to do with the concert market and where they’re trying to move around to. But I think any time we have a chance to look at those opportunities, we certainly will.” Overall, Parker expects the number of student-athletes to decrease by about 100, mostly due to the elimination of walk-ons. Fresno State President Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval has approved a mandatory student fee increase that will generate around $11.4M per year and add $5M or more to the athletic department budget. Starting this fall, students will pay an additional $495 per year to fund academic and student support initiatives, as well as student life initiatives including the university’s athletics programs. Jiménez-Sandoval explained the university committed to maintaining a strong athletics program while reducing reliance on institutional support; “however, the financial landscape of college athletics continues to evolve, with rising costs driven by inflation, market demands, and evolving NCAA policies. University leadership will conduct annual evaluations of financial commitments, including direct institutional support, to ensure that athletics operates efficiently while aligning with broader institutional priorities. The focus remains on building a sustainable financial model that balances institutional investment with self-generated revenue to support the success of Fresno State student-athletes and the university as a whole.” (link)
