Congratulations to the Connecticut women’s basketball team for taking home the Huskies’ 12th national championship yesterday. (link); UConn HC Geno Auriemma on winning his first title since 2016: “Being honest, I think there was a big part of my inner circle of people that I trust that were hoping that after the Stewy fourth in a row that I should have called it a day back then. That would have been apropos, I guess -- ride off into the sunset with Stewy and Tuck and Moriah and those guys. But when you make the decision you're not finished yet, and then three, four years go by and people start telling you that UConn is not UConn anymore and it's somebody else's turn. And then five years go by and six years go by and seven years go by -- it's not like it was extra motivation, but it just happened to coincide, the last five years, with the pandemic, the bubble, the injuries. And I just kept thinking, you know, I kind of owe it to these people to kind of let me see if we can take a whole team, what could happen, because these people that have been playing against us for the last seven, eight years have not played a University of Connecticut team, yet beating UConn always seemed like the national championship to them. For us it always seemed like, if we ever got a chance to get healthy, this could be pretty good.” (link); The Women’s Basketball Final Four sold out for a fourth consecutive season as 19,731 fans packed Tampa’s Amalie Arena. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey tells SEC Network/ESPN host Paul Finebaum that the House settlement is not the finish line but rather a “chapter, an important chapter in this process. Let’s go back to the issues. It’s not simply litigation that produces the challenges we have. States setting different rules so that you might have 50 different sets of rules threaten the ability to have a Final Four. There will be a point at which people don’t want to come together for this competition if we don’t have uniformity on a national basis. We have to enact the settlement, we have to make decisions and fulfill commitments around the settlement. No one’s asking, at least from my perspective, for some kind of antitrust exemption, but there has to be a level of protection from a liability standpoint to enact those standards. That has to be done nationally. … If we just continue on and allow lawsuit after lawsuit, state legislation after state legislation, we’re simply going to grind this into no standards at all. And I think that poses a threat to that Olympic development program. It poses a threat to the opportunities for young people. That’s, in brief, the communication of both the what and the why. And we could go on for hours and people can debate, and I'm certain that people will post and criticize and say, ‘Well, he’s got one point of view.’ I do have a point of view. I have a point of view that understands the depth of the opportunity we provide, the new economic benefits provided, but the need for the opportunity broadly to still be protected.” (link)

Former Arizona State men’s swimming student-athlete/eponymous House plaintiff Grant House voices support for maintaining Cal Poly’s swimming & diving program and contends it’s “not the House v. NCAA settlement, it’s athletic departments making this decision and making these choices to cut these programs.” However, the Mustangs’ athletic department in its decision to eliminate swimming explains that the “House vs. NCAA settlement, which addresses past and future compensation for student athletes related to name, image and likeness (NIL) rights, will have a significant financial impact – resulting in a loss of at least $450K per year for our programs. This comes amid additional national class-action lawsuits pending against the NCAA, further compounding financial and operational challenges for collegiate athletics.” (link, link)

College of Charleston men’s basketball student-athlete Ante Brzovic has sued the NCAA over its five-year rule and is seeking an injunction for the 2025-26 season. Heitner Legal Founder Darren Heitner: “My filings with Mark Peper of [Peper Law Firm] in South Carolina challenge anticompetitive eligibility limits post-Div II, citing $1M+ NIL loss.” (link); Full complaint. Front Office Sports’ Alex Schiffer caught up with players on 10 NBA teams and found that among players a “new role has emerged in locker rooms: the House settlement expert.” For the Los Angeles Lakers, that player is forward/former Kentucky men’s basketball student-athlete Jarred Vanderbilt, who explains he “got an email, so I checked my email, and once I found out, I told some of the guys in the locker room to check their email to see if they were eligible for it.” Schiffer notes that Vanderbilt played just one year at Kentucky and is halfway through a fully guaranteed four-year, $48M extension. “Per game, Vanderbilt earns roughly $146K, and his House settlement figure isn’t likely to amount to anything more than a single game check paid out over 10 years. Still, Vanderbilt saw no excuse for not filing for it.” Vanderbilt: “It takes two minutes to do it. And that’s a lot of money. I don’t care how much money you make. That’s still a lot of money. Especially when all you have to do is fill out a little form. And I feel like I earned that money as well.” Dallas Mavericks forward P.J. Washington says Arkansas Men’s Basketball HC John Calipari, who coached Washington at Kentucky, and Calipari’s son, Brad, both nudged him and his former teammates to file for their money. Players are expecting payouts ranging from $40K to $400K, and Nets guard Cam Johnson, who played at Pittsburgh and North Carolina, is expecting upwards of $120K and says he’s accepting the money “on principle.” (link)

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips is optimistic about getting more teams in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament in the future and says of the recent departures of Duke HC Mike Krzyzewski, North Carolina HC Roy Williams, Syracuse HC Jim Boeheim, Virginia HC Tony Bennett and others: “You don’t replace 5,488 wins, 30 Final Fours and 10 national championships, you just don’t do that overnight.” Phillips also asserts that “we better recruit to a higher level than we have recently. We just have to. That’s the name of the game. It’s high school, but it’s also the transfer portal. We have to continue to invest in basketball, and I think our presidents understand that. I know our ADs understand that, and that’s a commitment from our schools and from the conference.” Additionally, Phillips notes the league must continue to be smart about scheduling, and “ the final and fourth piece is you’ve got to win. You can’t have a challenge and go 2-14. You just can’t. That just cannot happen. No one is accepting that the ACC is a conference that should now and in the future get four bids. We should be at that eight, nine, 10 number and we will be back there. … That being said, even in the last three to four years, even with a reduction in the number of bids, no one’s performed better than we have.” (link)

Tonight’s men’s basketball national championship is particularly meaningful for Houston AD Eddie Nuñez, who played college hoops at Florida. He tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy; “Sure, I went to school there and I love the Gators. But let’s not make any mistake about it – come Monday, it’s all about the Cougs.” When former Gators HC Lon Krueger was replaced by Billy Donovan, Nuñez explains he decided to stick it out because “it was a place where I wanted to be. … Something told me to stay when I was about to transfer after my first year there. Things happen for a reason, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without Billy, without [then-Florida AD] Jeremy Foley, all those people there that basically gave me opportunities to learn this business. … [Donovan] was a 30-year-old, whatever he was, he was going into practice with us. That’s what people don’t understand, [now-Dayton HC] Anthony Grant, [former Arkansas HC] John Pelphrey and Billy Donovan would practice with us. We didn’t have enough guys. It was absurd. And you know what? They were better than three-fourths of the team.” Nuñez goes on to explain that “Coach Donovan is a mentor, a friend. Man, I love the guy. He’s been there every time I needed him, from when my dad passed away to helping me get into this profession. … Who else better than somebody who’s seen it at a high level?” (link)

VCU AD Ed McLaughlin sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to offer insight into the Rams’ decision to announce plans to share revenue and explains that “it was important for us to get out in front of it. … I thought it was important for our program to be bold…and light people’s fires of looking at us and saying, ‘VCU’s for real on this.’ We look at ourselves as a program that should be a top 25 program in men’s basketball and women’s basketball and the only way to get there in the future is to make sure you have revenue sharing that matches your aspirations.” McLaughlin and Garcia Cichosz also discuss recent changes announced at the NCAA Convention, including the approval of women’s basketball units, the impact of sports wagering, and issues related to the transfer portal. McLaughlin goes on to reflect on the role of the NCAA and how DI institutions manage and allocate their resources in a future professionalized model and posits that “amateur athletics at the college level is dead. It’s completely dead. If we're compensating them for their name, image and likeness and sharing revenue with them based on that versus pay-for-play, I can get with that. But the reality is this is [how] we're going forward. So, how do we provide an environment where we have terms set on these different things? And my greater concern is the kids who are transferring multiple times without a path to a degree or they’re being promised something and they go there and it doesn’t happen that way.” In the end, McLaughlin believes DI will not look the same. “There are a bunch of schools who will be competing as one subset and schools that have resources competing as another subset…but we’re all still going to play each other and as long as we ensure access to championships, the NCAA can do that and run championships.” More on ADU. South Carolina Women’s Basketball HC Dawn Staley this weekend said she hopes new WBCA President/USF HC Jose Fernandez can secure a separate media rights deal for women’s hoops: “I don't know if he can get that – open up negotiations for a new television deal. Would be nice. We need our own television deal so we can understand what our worth is. I think he also needs to fight for more revenue-share dollars when it comes to women’s basketball because we can’t forget when this case was brought up it was football, it was men’s basketball and it was women’s basketball. So, any percentage that’s less than what we deserve needs to be addressed if we’re not getting it across the board.” Meanwhile, Wasserman agent Emily Jo Roberts tells Front Office Sports’ Colin Salao: “There’s the very old, antiquated idea that you give money to football and men’s basketball because that’s what’s ‘making you money’ and you just kind of throw what’s left to women’s basketball or other women’s sports. I just think that that is an antiquated way to look at this now that we really should be operating much more like a business as opposed to athletic departments.” (link); Connecticut HC Geno Auriemma this weekend added: “For years and years and years we’ve been packaged with all the other Olympic sports, so to speak, in one big chunk. Can we completely separate ourselves and say: What are we worth to you?” (link)

The Men’s Basketball Final Four averaged 15.3M viewers on CBS, making it the most-watched since 2017. Viewership peaked at 20.4M, but those figures are expected to increase when the final data is made available on Tuesday. Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich notes total viewership (for the entire tournament, presumably) has averaged 9.9M viewers, up 2% YoY. (link, link)

On3’s Pete Nakos cites a “range of sources” who say Duke will have roughly $8-10M available for next year’s men’s basketball roster. Nakos adds: “One source described the NIL war chest as ‘unlimited.’ … As another source told On3, the Blue Devils have rarely lost out on a recruit or transfer target because of dollars since the collective was founded.” (link)
|
Speaking of which, the benefactor(s) paying for Duke’s men's basketball roster remains a mystery, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Andrew Beaton, who writes: “In a move that’s highly unusual for a major college program, there’s virtually no online footprint for Duke basketball’s booster collective. That’s not because the Blue Devils have somehow managed to construct a star-studded team without gobs of cash lining players’ pockets, though. Instead, Duke is in a position to compete for its sixth national championship thanks to a group of high net worth donors who have chosen to operate in a way that makes them unique in the braggadocious world of college sports—by conducting their business from the shadows. People involved with the operation say the group’s silence is intentional.” The organization and its founders do have names, however, as Beaton reports three Duke alumni in 2023 “incorporated a non-profit in Delaware. With an address listed as an office building in Arkansas, they called it ‘One Vision Futures Fund’ and applied to do business in North Carolina, according to state records. The address of OVFF, as it’s known, belongs to the office of Duke alum Jeff Fox, the CEO and founder of the investment firm Circumference Group. He’s listed on incorporating documents as one of three executive officers, along with fellow alumni Dan Levitan, co-founder of the venture capital firm Maveron, and Steve Duncker, a former partner at Goldman Sachs.” Blue Devils GM Rachel Baker confirms the group’s silence is intentional, telling Beaton: “It’s no secret what we do, but the discretion around it is more about our athletes’ privacy than anything else.” Beaton adds: “By not advertising the dollar numbers it throws around, it has allowed the collective to stay nimble in the marketplace of players. The lean operation also means they’ve avoided overhead costs, such as a business manager, with the goal that all the money going in should flow directly back out to the players.” (link)

Former NCAA President & Arizona AD Cedric Dempsey passed away yesterday at the age of 92. Current NCAA boss Charlie Baker: “Ced was instrumental in shaping the NCAA as it moved into the new century, overseeing a restructuring of the organization, and strengthening the foundation of college sports for years that followed his tenure. His impact on the lives of student-athletes and administrators across the nation will be felt for years to come.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker does not expect U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken to formally approve the House settlement during tomorrow’s hearing: “She may give us some guidance with respect (to) what direction she's leaning. My guess is she's going to have the hearing and she'll [approve it] after that.” Baker continued at the Men’s Basketball Final Four yesterday: “One of the things I like about the settlement is that it puts a process in place that doesn't say there is one style, one answer, one solution. I also think it will be rocky and bumpy because it's the biggest change in 40 years. … Let's set it up. Let's see how it goes. It's far better than what we have now.” CBS’ Dennis Dodd with a bit more. (link)

Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter points to a lawsuit filed by former Villanova Men’s Basketball standout Kris Jenkins “(who opted out of House) has sued the NCAA in federal court in New York, seeking damages for the NIL $ he was unable to receive. He’s also seeking a judgment that voids all NCAA rules that limit payment for NIL rights & athletic services. If successful, the limits in the House settlement (salary cap and restrictions on collectives) would potentially be void. This is an example of the lawsuits that are going to continue even if the House settlement is approved.” (link - post, link - full filing)

Arizona State AD Graham Rossini is in line for a three-year contract extension that could come with an increased base pay rate of $950K annually (up from $650K) with $100K increases each year of the deal. There’s also a slew of academic & athletic bonus opportunities for Rossini that you can check out in the post. SunDevilSource.com’s Chris Karpman notes: “FWIW, Ray Anderson is still making $950k/year until next summer. So Rossini would be paid the same as Anderson.” (link)

Hawaii will pay Parker Executive Search $70K for its help hiring a new AD. The Honolulu Civil Beat also notes the search is likely to be subject to public records transparency: “‘One of the objectives of the search process is to give the UNIVERSITY, candidates, and general public a substantial comfort level that the search has been conducted professionally and efficiently,’ the new contract says. Under a section called ‘Ownership Rights,’ this contract clearly states: ‘The UNIVERSITY shall have complete ownership of all reports, plans, evaluations, applications, resume data, and related material, both finished and unfinished, which are received, developed, prepared, assembled, or conceived by the CONTRACTOR pursuant to this Agreement. All such material shall be provided to the UNIVERSITY upon request and/or upon expiration or termination of this Agreement.’” (link)

Pittsburgh AD Allen Greene says the Panthers need to “invest with precision” in order to win championships in a post-House settlement world. Greene to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Stephen Thompson: “It's important to understand Pitt athletics’ relevance in the university context and in the community context. It's important for our institution, and it's important for our community to have successful athletics. [...] Resources have always been a differentiator. For the past 20 years, the race for elite facilities has dominated spending, all in the name of recruiting. In the current landscape, talent acquisition has become heavily transactional through NIL and the looming reality of revenue sharing. What coach (Men’s Basketball HC Jason) Capel, and all our coaches for that matter, want is for their programs to be positioned for success. [...] I would say our path to success is a little bit different. There are programs out there that have more financial resources to throw at it. We don't have those financial resources that the SEC and the Big Ten do, but that doesn't mean that we can't find success.” (link)

Army West Point AD Tom Theodorakis covers several topics on the Bold American podcast, including the Michie Stadium renovation and points out the $170M project will include “upgraded seating, suites, hospitality areas, loge boxes, but also new seating for the Corps of Cadets end zone to end zone. … It’s going to take what is an iconic venue already and just take it to another level.” Theodorakis also notes it was the superintendent’s top priority because “it’s not just a football stadium. As you know, our day starts there, graduation’s there, so I think it’s an experience for the whole Corps of Cadets and all of our fans and all of the West Point community.” Theodorakis also says joining the American wasn’t an easy decision, but “there’s a lot of reasons why I love it. Number one is even being on the road we are around a lot of military communities and a lot of bases. We’re in Florida, we’re in Texas, we’re in North Carolina. There’s different pockets where I think it really speaks well to where our alumni base is. So, aside from West Point, there’s a lot of engagement opportunities for us when we’re on the road every single year now. I think we’re aligned with some really great institutions and I think it’s only going to help us as we start talking College Football Playoff to have a seat at the table.” Full interview. (link)

Delaware State President Tony Allen says of the university’s $125M state budget request, some of which is earmarked for athletics facility upgrades: “It’s a new era for DSU Athletics. People ask me all the time ‘why should we be focused on athletics?’ It’s because it’s the front porch of the university.” A new indoor football practice space is part of the vision for the Hornets, as is a new baseball venue & “a state-of-the-art convocation center, combining an indoor arena and conference space in one venue, similar to what is in place inside the Bob Carpenter Center at the University of Delaware.” (link)

+ New Arizona State Women’s Basketball HC Molly Miller’s five-year deal will pay her a base salary of $750K in year one, rising to $900K in 2029-30, pending approval by the Board of Regents April 10. It also includes annual retention bonuses of $100K, $25K for winning the regular season conference tournament, $10K for appearing in the league’s championship game and $35K for winning it. As for the NCAA Tournament, she’ll get one payment for the highest achievement based on the following: $50K for participating in it, and $60K, $70K or $80K, for the round of 32, Sweet 16 and Elite Eight, respectively, $100K for the Final Four, $200K for playing in the national championship game and $350K for winning it all. Women’s Sports Foundation CEO Danette Leighton pens an op-ed for USA Today in which she argues that while the women’s basketball Final Four shows the tide is turning for equality in women’s sports, there’s still work to be done. For example, Leighton submits that “more than 50 years after the passage of Title IX, research has shown that women athletes still miss out on scholarships and participation opportunities. A majority of NCAA institutions – 86% – do not offer athletic opportunities to women athletes in proportion to their enrollment, which is a key option in Title IX compliance. Additionally, if schools were to provide proportional participation opportunities, NCAA Division I and Division II schools would need to offer an additional $741M in athletic scholarships to even the scales.” Even if the House settlement is approved, Leighton contends that “without congressional intervention and data transparency requirements to sort out the interplay in the college sports world of antitrust, labor and tax law and Title IX, we fear that schools will apply different operational and investment standards to their men’s and women’s programs, which will in turn halt the progress women’s sports have made or, at worst, leave programs on the chopping block. The new era of women’s sports has demonstrated that investment matters. The NCAA basketball tournament reinforces all the benefits college sports bring to women, men and our society. … We are at the cusp of monumental change in collegiate athletics, and for the sake of future generations, it is time to invest more in women’s sports, not less.” (link)

Alabama sport management professor/U.S. Professional Diving Coaches Association President Chelsea Ale pens an op-ed for SBJ about the challenges facing diving as a sport, particularly at the collegiate level in light of the House settlement. While diving may be an “easy” sport to cut, Ale contends that doesn’t make it the right choice. “Collegiate diving programs serve as a critical link in the U.S. Olympic development pipeline. Most elite divers who compete on the world stage come through NCAA programs. Cut those programs, and you cut off the training, competition and scholarship opportunities that make Olympic dreams viable. The U.S. doesn’t have a centralized government-supported Olympic training system – our Olympic hopefuls train at universities.” Shrinking and/or eliminating collegiate diving will also have an impact on the grassroots level because “when young athletes see their sport disappearing from colleges, they stop believing it’s a future worth pursuing. Why train 20 hours a week in high school for a sport that won’t help you get into college? Why pay for private club training, travel and coaching when there’s no long-term pathway? … Diving has long been a pathway for students, particularly women, to earn scholarships and degrees they might not otherwise afford. With each program that’s cut, another door slams shut.” Ale suggests several steps that could help preserve the sport: create protected Olympic development programs within college athletics, supported by national governing bodies and the USOPC; seek corporate partnerships for Olympic pipeline sports, tying brands to the development of future U.S. athletes; encourage universities to build “Olympic legacy” branding around non-revenue sports that have international reach and prestige; and rethink how value is measured. “Just because a sport doesn’t bring in TV money doesn’t mean it’s not valuable.” More. A State Department ruling announced Saturday could affect Duke Men’s Basketball student-athlete Khaman Maluach, who was born in South Sudan. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated in a social media post that he is “taking actions to revoke all visas held by South Sudanese passport holders,” attributing the decision to “the failure of South Sudan’s transitional government to accept the return of its repatriated citizens in a timely manner.” A State Department spokesperson last night said the decision would “impact all those who have a U.S. visa in a South Sudanese passport and anyone with a South Sudanese passport who is applying for a U.S. visa. We will provide further information and instructions to affected visa holders and applicants as it is available.” (link)

Former Central Michigan Men’s Basketball student-athlete Damarion Brooks filed a lawsuit against the school on Monday and CMU parted ways with MBB HC Tony Barbee on Thursday. Bonds was dismissed in early February after CMU’s Office of Student Conduct charged him with violating its Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities and Disciplinary Procedures by providing a false response to a transfer applications question. After graduating from Waterford Mott High School in 2022 Bonds attended Rochester University (DIII) on an athletic scholarship in 2022-23. From there he transferred to Henry Ford College (NJCAA) in 2023 before transferring to CMU in 2024. The lawsuit alleges Bonds’ due process rights were violated under the Fourteenth Amendment and additional state law violations under the Michigan Compiled Laws. Further, the complaint alleges Bonds’ dismissal has caused him irreparable harm and has jeopardized his ability to complete his undergraduate academic courses for 2024-25, resulting in his failure to meet his percentage to degree as required by the NCAA. It also alleges his dismissal further jeopardizes his ability to transfer to another Division I basketball program as a student-athlete. Bonds is seeking a jury trial and is being represented by Hammoud, Dakhlallah and Associates and the Salem Law Firm. The defendants in the lawsuit are Central Michigan University, Rochester University, Rochester VP of Student Life, Admissions and Marketing/Title IX Coordinator Scott Samuels, CMU Dir. of Student Conduct Thomas Idema Jr. and CMU Title IX Coordinator/Asst. to the President of the Office of Civil Rights and Institutional Equity Mary Martinez.
