Extra Points publisher Matt Brown shares an update on Sacramento State, which is seeking a waiver to join FBS despite not having a conference: “A few folks that I trust have told me that it shouldn’t be considered a 100% slam dunk that the NCAA actually grants the waiver, given that reclassification procedures have changed.” Additionally, Brown explains that “I could be completely wrong about this. But I suspect that part of the reason the other FBS leagues have been cooler on Sac State has been the tremendously public campaign the school has waged to secure an FBS conference invite.” More. The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner posits that if forced to choose, exposure is “vastly more important” than revenue for the Pac-12 in its new media rights deal. Former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson agrees and explains that “at this stage of the game, you don’t want to disappear and hide behind some streaming wall. If you have a streaming element, that’s fine. But I don’t think it can be your primary distribution source. You really want to be on some linear over-the-air and cable networks so that you’re front and center in everybody’s minds. … We’re all waiting for college football 2.0 to come about. Staying relevant is extremely important if you want a shot at being part of what might happen in 2030.” An industry source adds that “whether they get $10M a school or $12M, they are so far behind the (power) leagues that it’s all on the margins.” Moreover, Wilner continues, wherever the money lands, it will likely be in the “same range as the conference’s primary competition for supremacy on the sport’s second tier: The American, which distributes an average of $7M to its schools but slightly more to its anchor institutions, which include Memphis, Tulane and South Florida. … It’s a five-year audition. You trade the dollars for the eyeballs.” (link)

As schools continue eliminating or altering spring football games, The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman wonders whether preseason games would make more sense, and Iowa HC Kirk Ferentz says: “As long as it didn’t count, I’d be all for it. It’s kind of like NFL preseason games that don’t count against your win-loss record, but it gives you a chance to get guys in-game experience in different situations.” Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti is open to the idea and remarks: “I’ve heard it come up a little bit on basketball, ‘Hey, why can’t we just play a few games to get started?’ I’d be curious to see the approach on the pro side about who plays. They’d use it as evaluation, right? I’d be interested to see what that would mean for us.” Dochterman observes that the SEC and Big Ten are looking for ways to schedule more games against each other The SEC, “and perhaps preseason games could figure into that dynamic. Maybe they could even be used as a way to restore regional rivalries, such as Oklahoma-Oklahoma State, USC-Stanford or Maryland-Virginia or bring about convenient nearby series like Iowa State-Minnesota or Cincinnati-Kentucky. Or it could enhance the regular season by shifting games against FCS opponents to the preseason.” Furthermore, Dochterman points out the games could offer additional revenue streams through ticket sales, sponsorships and media rights. Many schools require seven home football games per year to generate enough revenue to pay for the other sports on campus. With gate, concessions, parking and other sales, many power-conference programs earn more than $5M per home game.” Hawkeyes student-athlete Jonah Pace offers a different perspective: “Why do we need to go somewhere else and train against someone else when we’ve got the best here in the building going against each other every day? I wouldn’t say a preseason game would be necessary. We’ve already got long periods of time, and then possibly going into the postseason, that’s a lot of football.” (link)

Three of the six former Florida State men’s basketball student-athletes who filed an NIL-related lawsuit against former Noles HC Leonard Hamilton have decided not to pursue the matter further and will not seek punitive damages, according to The Field of 68 legal analyst Mitch Gilfillan. Heitner Legal Founder Darren Heitner: “To clarify, the punitive damage request was premature. The remaining plaintiff players retain the right to amend to seek punitive damages.” (link)

Coaches Corner: Extended…
+ The Louisville Athletic Association today approved a raise for Cardinals Men’s Basketball HC Pat Kelsey, whose salary will increase from $2.3M to $3.63M per year, per WDRB’s Eric Crawford, who notes the deal, which runs through 2030, also increases the incentives he would earn for reaching the Sweet 16, Elite Eight and Final Four. Also from Crawford, who was at the ULAA meeting: “Probably the first time I've heard [Cards AD] Josh Heird talk in an open athletic association meeting about anticipating further conference realignment shifts ‘when TV contracts run out’ and working to position Louisville ‘to be on the right side of that’ shift.” (link, link)
+ Crawford also notes Kelsey's buyout is “95% of his guaranteed compensation for the next two years, then goes to 55%, then 50% the last two years of the deal. That would be about $3.1M, going down to 1.8M, to 1.65M. That's if his base salary stayed where it is (likely won't).” (link)
+ In addition to Kelsey’s extension, Louisville also extended the contracts of Men’s Golf HC Ryan Blagg (through June 2030), Women’s Rowing HC Derek Copeland and Women’s Lacrosse HC Scott Teeter (both through June 2028). (link)
+ Kentucky Men’s Basketball HC Mark Pope received an automatic one-year contract extension after the Wildcats made the Sweet 16, according to CBS’ Jon Rothstein, who notes Pope's contract now runs through the 2029-30 season, with a $250K salary increase set for the final year of the deal.” (link)
+ Richmond has extended Women’s Basketball HC Aaron Roussell’s contract for the second time in a year. Details, including the length of the extension, were not disclosed. (link)

As President Donald Trump’s tariff strategy continues to play out, Sportico’s Lev Akabas obtained a list of suppliers for 11 major companies that share their facilities on the platform Open Supply Hub. Those companies – Fanatics, Under Armour, Adidas, New Balance, New Era Cap, Nike, Puma, Lululemon, Amer Sports, Asics and Dick’s Sporting Goods – utilize 2,508 factories around the world. Of those, China, which is still subject to a hefty tariff as of the latest Trump announcement, has the most (35%), but Akabas notes the manufacturers are “also scattered across the rest of Asia. Vietnam is home to 18% of the facilities, and there are a significant number in Indonesia (6%), Cambodia (4%) and Taiwan (3%). All in all, the aforementioned companies sourced products from more than 2,000 factories (80%) in East or South Asia, where Trump’s initial tariff rates were highest. One major caveat with this dataset is that the numbers are not equivalent to the actual percentages of product that is made in those locations. The factories vary greatly in size, and their output quantities are not known. … It should also be noted that this cohort of companies varies greatly in the percentage of their sales that come in the U.S., and therefore their percentage of revenue that could be impacted by Trump’s policies. Power 4 commissioners last night spoke at a reception to cap College Sports Day on the Hill, and Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger reports that Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark said the House settlement “needs to be codified” with a federal bill and called the portal “unsustainable.” ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips intimated that the commissioners “feel really good” about today’s meetings and emphasized the importance of preserving Olympic sports. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey remarked that leaders must “keep pushing” for federal legislation and argued that the “downstream effects” of employment would be “substantial.” Finally, Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti said “access” and other benefits for athletes would “go down” in an employment model. (link)

More from ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips as he tells ESPN’s Heather Dinich: “We're kind of in a seminal moment. We're trying to find something that has sustainability to it. It's a modernization of college sports. I think for all of us, we are passionate about access and affordability to higher education ... at the heart of this thing is opportunities for young men and women. Times have changed, and whether we like all the things that have occurred, or we don't, we find ourselves in a position where we are major stewards of the future of college sports.” More SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey: “The reality is the timing of the House settlement, the new Congress and when we planned really months ago to be here, there was a nexus of issues. We know there's conversations taking place. We've educated, I think, effectively members of the House and Senate, and we need to keep pushing and to do that with our universities is much healthier than simply doing that as commissioners and doing so in a coordinated way across the four conferences.” (link)

After going three straight years without an NCAA Tournament bid and 13 years without a Big Ten championship, Ohio State AD Ross Bjork says the Buckeyes are not getting complacent with men’s basketball: “We don't want to tiptoe around Ohio State basketball. I'm challenging our staff to think of it differently internally. We're not going to tiptoe around Ohio State basketball. We know what the standard is. We have blue-blood elements in our history, and we need to be more consistent. … I think with football, obviously, we have such a great foundation. With basketball, we really need a strategic approach with Jake [Diebler] at the helm, so we need to help him with some of the messaging. Obviously, roster retention and building is part of that. Gameday atmosphere in the Schott, what can we do to, you know, you can't really downsize the Schott, but how do we make it a tighter feel? Is that lighting? Is that seating sections that we look at? How do we get the students more involved? What's our messaging around the program?” (link)

San Diego AD Kimya Massey joins USD’s At the Edge of It All podcast to discuss his first year in the role, establishing a culture, his vision for the department and more. Massey believes the athletic department is also in the education business and explains it is his responsibility to “help educate our staff on what we're doing and how we can do it. Ultimately, there should be buy-in with everybody on your vision. You can set a vision, but you still have to have buy-in to get it done, and you need people to feel like, ‘Oh, this is something I can get behind and, by the way, I can contribute a voice to that and it’s going to be heard.’ So, I think that’s a big part of this, especially in your first year. You are trying to gain credibility, you are trying to gain trust, you are trying to set a vision, but you can't do it by yourself. You can't, you just can't. We have 100+ people in our department and every single one of them has an opportunity and a job every day to do that impacts the overall vision. So, that's part of it and having energy and hopefully inspire others that ‘hey it can be done here’…and I think that has to start with the leadership.” Full podcast. (link)

U.S. Congressman Michael Baumgartner (R-WA) joins JohnCanzano.com’s namesake to discuss his Restore College Sports Act to Bring Sanity and Fairness to College Athletics bill and Canzano points out that Baumgartner’s model sounds like socialism and asks how the congressman would refute that position, to which Baumgartner responds: “Think about K-12 sports. They don’t make a lot of revenue, but there is more popcorn and more tickets sold at a boys’ high school football game than there is probably at a girls’ soccer game, and yet you treat all those athletes the same when it comes to support because it’s a general public good. And in college sports, I think for the taxpayer, and again these are highly subsidized taxpayer universities, we want to create more opportunities. So, yeah, it is a little bit socialist in the sense that you’re redistributing what the market values as the money for the greater TV value for certain football programs in certain leagues, but that’s already how college sports works. … The average fan, we love college football in the 1980s” rather than “every college football now has to have a locker room with padded seats and reclining chairs and Xboxes and slides and all this nonsense that goes in the locker rooms, and they’re only good for five years. There’s no public good in that.” (link)

The Toledo Blade’s David Briggs examines how much MAC men’s basketball student-athletes are making in NIL and is told by agent Rick Clair, who represents several current and former Toledo and Bowling Green players: “To give you an idea on the range within the MAC, if you're looking at the [NIL] collective side of it — where things were up until this year — you're probably looking at $20K to $100K [per year] for a decent player. Now that we’re moving into the rev-share model, we're getting numbers of [more than] $150K for your tier one starters.” Clair compares that with what MAC players who transfer out of the league can make: “If you take a kid from the MAC to the Big Ten, you're looking at probably a $300K to $500K jump.” As far as which MAC programs have the biggest war chests, Briggs says the “five coaches I talked to all put Akron and incoming league member Massachusetts at the top – ‘1A and 1B’ – with both schools believed to be moving forward with men’s basketball payrolls in excess of $1M.” One coach tells Briggs: “I can't see a world where Akron spent below $1M. There's just no chance.” (link)

More from ESPN’s Max Olson who writes that as the spring continues, so will the trimming of football rosters & notes that West Virginia removed 22 players from its roster Monday as it prepares to cut down to the expected 105-man roster limit for 2025. “The Mountaineers were the first, but they won't be the last.” Among those cut were five true freshmen who joined the program this offseason. Also from Olson: “College football coaches would absolutely support grandfathering in current players and avoiding harsh post-spring roster cuts. They're going to need clarity on this matter as soon as possible so they can make decisions on who's staying and who's leaving.” (link)

In the latest episode of The Career Hustle, Connect’s Kristen Eargle catches up with Akron Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Jackie Wallgren to discuss the shifts in the industry and how administrators can best prepare themselves. Wallgren, who is currently in law school, also describes how she incorporates the current industry flux into her studies, explains what she looks for when hiring new team members and talks about how the experience she gained in DII was a critical part of her development. Wallgren explains that “I think what many people don't necessarily think about is that [Division II] is like boot camp for being an athletics administrator. I mentioned that their staffing is less robust, we’ll say, and so you wear a lot of hats. I was doing everything from managing coaches and certifying eligibility to running a scoreboard at softball and you know making sure that the tickets were appropriately allocated for a basketball game. We do what needs to be done, and it’s really collaborative. That means that I have experience in a lot of different areas. It doesn't mean that I'm going to do every single one of those things as I'm working here at Akron, but I at least can speak the language. I understand some of the challenges. So as I was coming into a leadership role at an FBS institution, I can talk with my colleagues that are managing those other areas, whereas I do find when I talk with folks that have been always in Division I and some of the bigger institutions, they are really great at one or two things because they've been able to do those things and really focus on them. But once you're trying to expand into something more broad-based in that leadership role, maybe haven't had the opportunity to learn from those areas.” Lots more on Connect. (link)

Fanatics rolled out approximately 2,400 new products during the three weeks of March Madness, and SBJ’s Ethan Joyce explains the “sheer output emphasizes the need for fans to find all those items in the first place so they can scoop them up. To boost that, Fanatics has fortified its digital ecosystem through a partnership with Google Cloud, using the tech giant’s Vertex AI Search for Commerce to help that merchandise hunt. … The searching enhancement, which is currently live through the Fanatics app and will spread throughout the company sites by the end of the year, took nine months to build to account for the various nuances associated with sports, as well as Fanatics’ giant group of partners (900-plus) and products.” By pairing Google insights with Fanatics’ knowledge of users’ preferences, the company can “pinpoint searches with the right apparel, helping fans find threads for bluebloods and Cinderellas alike.” Fanatics Commerce Chief Product Officer Justin Tsai notes the company, which also uses AI to enhance images, perform quality-assurance shopping and handle customer service experiences, has found a new agility with the innovation. “As teams win, we need their creative. We use AI for a lot now, where historically, it would’ve been hard to react.” (link)

The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will mark the first time that women receive more than half of the quota spots in an Olympic Games. The women’s share of quota spots will be 50.5% with the most significant expansions coming in soccer and water polo, according to SBJ’s Rachel Axon, who notes the LA Games will have 11,198 total athletes. “In coordination with FIFA, the IOC approved increasing the field from 12 to 16 teams for women’s soccer and reducing the men’s field to 12 from 16. The executive board also approved increasing women’s water polo to 12 teams and boxing to seven weight classes, putting those sports on equal footing with the men.” IOC Sport Director Kit McConnell: “All of these decisions are also supported by the numbers, are supported by the ticket demand that we’ve seen for women’s sport at recent Games. We’ve seen the broadcast numbers for women’s sport being absolutely equal, if not even stronger, than for men’s sport around the Olympic Games, and we’ve seen the media coverage increase exponentially as a result of ours, and working with federations and with hosts, but working together to promote women’s sport.” (link)
