NCAA President Charlie Baker tells NBC’s Nicole Auerbach that the House settlement will provide structure around NIL for the first time, “and we will be able to tell just exactly how much money in the NIL world – on the institutional side and the third-party side – people are investing in sports, especially in particular sports. For me, that’s really important because I think the way this thing’s been working up until now no one knows. They really don't. All you have is what people tell you, and honestly I've come not to believe any of it and I know that's true for a lot of people who cover sports who have told me the same thing. We will at least finally understand how much money on the NIL side people are putting in our schools. … I think that's going to be a big win for everybody because transparency creates accountability, and right now, we don't have either.” (link)

Cleveland State AD Kelsey Gory Harkey’s new three-year contract begins June 1, 2025, and runs through June 30, 2028, and includes a base salary of $210K with $15K in supplemental income if she’s still with the Vikings on June 30 of each year, according to CollegeAD. Should either side wish to extend the contract, they must inform the other in writing at least one year before the contract is up. Gory Harkey can earn an additional $30K in incentives each year and would be owed the remainder of the contract’s base pay if the Vikings terminate the agreement without cause. (link)

Cal AD Jim Knowlton announces that the athletic department is having the best fundraising year in its history. In addition to endowing the men’s and women’s golf programs, Knowlton explains that “we have three more sports that we’ll be announcing very, very soon that are also endowed, and those five endowments alone save us $5M annually because the interest on those endowments pays for the annual expenses. So, this is something I haven't read about any other schools in the country doing. That is going to help us continue to support all of our Olympic sports and continue to support our-student athletes the way we want, so that's been amazing. We've also endowed the fifth head coaching position, another huge announcement that we’ll make over the next few weeks.” Knowlton also talks about the impact of Football GM/longtime NFL HC Ron Rivera, noting he has been able to bring alumni and fans together, help support student-athletes through donations and philanthropy and offer some wisdom to the football staff. “I’ve watched him talking with our coach, talking with our assistant coaches, talking with our student-athletes, and he just has that animal magnetism where people gravitate to him. … You hear all the time ‘Could he do this differently?’ or ‘Should we use him differently?’ We're going to figure out the best way to leverage Ron Rivera, and right now he's helping us in all those three areas.” More from Knowlton. New Mexico AD Fernando Lovo joins the Albuquerque Journal’s Geoff Grammer to cover several topics as he continues to finalize his vision for the Lobos. Lovo says he’s borrowed Texas AD Chris Del Conte’s mantra of “rip off and duplicate” when setting the direction for UNM. “So what I saw work at the University of Texas, during my eight years there, is what I'm trying to emulate here at the University of New Mexico. I have a very flat kind of reporting structure where I've got my executive team. It’s not just one or two individuals; I have a group of individuals, many of which have been named already, that are on my executive team, and I like to be very clear and provide a lot of clarity in terms of whose responsibilities lie under what buckets and just communicate that openly amongst the department. That process was ongoing and then it stopped a little bit with the basketball search. So, I do have a couple of positions here, [including] one that will be on my executive team, and some other critical pieces that we’re working on filling those positions. I would say in the next month or so I'll announce some more shifts and movements in titles and responsibilities.” Full podcast. (link)

Marshall AD Christian Spears told the school’s Athletics Committee this week that the Thundering Herd “will probably not have a single walk-on” if the House settlement passes. “What we’re going to do is use the full roster limit. Football, as an example, there are 105 kids that can be on the roster. We’re going to keep our traditional 85 football scholarships and add 20 tuition waivers. … We can make sure that they have success and graduate while they compete. It’s going to be a model that I think our student-athletes will appreciate. It allows us to retain athletes at a higher clip. There’s a real benefit, and I hope it translates to less transfer portal. You’re on aid and you’re part of something, you’re more likely to stay and play.” Spears also explained that construction on the Shewey Deck at Joan C. Edwards Stadium “will begin in earnest on the day after the spring game. You’ll see some construction starting to happen.” The $1.8M project will add a deck to the building that overlooks the end zone, with seats underneath. Renovations to the Cam Henderson Center are also planned, and Spears notes the Herd is “moving our women’s basketball coaches into another office area near the practice gym. That gives us an opportunity to find a donor to fund a new capital project to have suites in the arena. This is a vision that the basketball program has had for a long time — dedicated suites like we have in football. We have a budget. We believe it will generate a quarter of a million dollars for us annually to create another revenue stream, lower our deficit and provide a much better fan experience.” More. (link)

Tennessee QB Nico Iamaleava did not attend spring practice Friday, and ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports Iamaleava's absence “came as a surprise to coaches and players.” The news comes amid reports that Iamaleava is working on a new NIL contract with the Vols after QBs in this year’s transfer cycle, including Miami's Carson Beck and Duke's Darian Mensah, signed NIL deals for “significantly more money this offseason.” Thamel adds: “The situation has become a growing source of frustration among administrators at Tennessee and within the locker room, sources said. The day before the winter portal window closed in December, sources told ESPN that Iamaleava's representatives wanted to renegotiate his deal in the $4M range, but his deal was unchanged. He's expected to make $2.4M with the Vols this year.” UT, sources tell Thamel, “wasn’t going to blink and pay him any more money." (link)

At least eight men’s basketball teams will have war chests of $10M+ for next season’s rosters, according to 247Sports’ Travis Branham (link), and The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman believes the number will be closer to 15 (link). Goodman: “I polled 25-plus high-major coaches and this is what I came up with as far as salary numbers for this season. Obviously, there will be some outliers but this is a pretty good feel for what guys are getting now. PROJECTED ELITE GUYS (Top 10-15): $2.5 to 4M. PROJECTED ALL-LEAGUE PLAYER: $1.5 to 2.5M. PROJECTED STARTERS: $500K to 1.5M. PROJECTED BENCH PLAYER: $200K to 700K.” Heitner Legal Founder Darren Heitner adds: “This is pretty conservative if it's an SEC or Big Ten school. The floor and ceiling for elite guys and all-league players are higher. I'm even seeing some guys pegged to be starters who aren't ‘all-league’ receive $2.5M offers or more.” (link, link)

UMass Lowell has received a $4M philanthropic commitment from alumnus John Kennedy to fund the enhancement of athletics facilities and support the needs of River Hawk student-athletes. AD Lynn Coutts: “This historic gift will be transformational for our department to be able to provide the resources that many future generations of River Hawks need to excel in the changing landscape of college athletics. I am immensely grateful for John, and his unwavering support of what UMass Lowell Athletics is all about and belief in what we can become.” In honor of Kennedy’s support, the UMass Board of Trustees has voted to rename the Costello Athletic Center as the Kennedy Family Athletic Complex in a special dedication ceremony slated for October 2025. Here’s the full audio - oddly I cannot find the whole video, just clips - of the Power 4 commissioners’ sit down with Fox News’ Bret Baier as part of their visit to Capitol Hill earlier in the week. Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti: “The volume of laws being passed on the state level is making it very difficult for us to regulate and compete nationally. Every single time someone doesn't like a ruling coming from the NCAA, we end up in litigation. Those rules then get abrogated, and then we're back to the start. We're hopeful that what we've done with the settlement, and the case being done now will give us an opportunity, with some help from Congress, to really put a system in place that has some stability.” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey: “To have a College World Series, to have a College Football Playoff, to have national championships, you have to have national standards. The system doesn't work with 50 different approaches, which is what's happening through state laws being produced and adopted. We also face a variety of litigation efforts, and those need to settle out.” Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark continues: “From where I sit today, federal preemption, having a standardized platform that oversees and governs NIL is critically important. Today, 34 states see it differently, and it's relatively unruly,” ACC boss Jim Phillips simply states: “We need the help of Congress and national legislation.” (link)

Why is the College Football Playoff receiving a liability release in the House settlement? That’s the question attorneys Michael McGlamry & William Cornwell are looking for clarity on as they state in a filing: “The defendants have denied any affiliation with any CFP entity in some 15 years of related litigation before this Court and other federal courts. Yet now the defendants base their entire release of the ‘College Football Playoff’—a term that they still do not define—on the newly created fiction that whatever the ‘College Football Playoff’ is, it is an affiliate of defendants that must also be released.” U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken also asked for clarity during this week’s hearing: “I hope we don’t have to spend a lot of time on that, but we do need to clarify the identity of that organization. Do we need to discuss whether it is receiving funds that should be directed elsewhere?” CFP Senior Director of Communications Brett Daniels to Sportico’s Daniel Libit: “While CFP Administration LLC has no involvement in the case, the conferences who are defendants in the House case are members of CFP Administration LLC, and we expect that they requested that CFPA be included among the releases.” More. Miami (FL) will hold its spring game on campus but has declined ESPN’s offer to televise or stream the game. The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson: “After holding the game at Traz-Powell Stadium and at Lockhart Stadium over the years, UM has taken a liking to playing the game on campus at intimate Cobb Stadium, where recruits can attend and walk around the campus. But the Canes have room to accommodate only 5,500 people at Saturday’s game, compared with more than 15,000 at Lockhart. All 5,500 tickets, which were free, have been distributed, and there are no tickets remaining, per UM.” The Canes are not alone among ACC peers in opting not to broadcast the game, as only Virginia and Georgia Tech have decided to do so. UM will instead shoot and produce an original program for ACC Network, giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at Miami spring football. (link)

The D1.dossier for the AD opening at Maryland is ready to be a resource for those of you interested in the opening in College Park. Dozens of sitting ADs have utilized a dossier to win the job. Indiana State AD Nathan Christensen: “D1.dossiers were a huge asset during the education and interview process. Having high level, detailed information at your fingertips was extremely helpful. I would recommend it if anyone is going through the process, saves time and energy digging trying to find the correct information.” (link)

Florida Director of NIL Strategy Ben Chase via X: “I can’t imagine a year from now having to submit all the NIL deals and opportunities our guys have been offered over the last 48 hours to a clearinghouse to be approved. Time is of the essence.” To which Kennyhertz Perry’s Mit Winter responds: “What will most likely happen is deals won’t be submitted. Same as now. And if athletes are declared ineligible for not submitting deals there will be lots of litigation on that issue.” (link)

Baylor Men’s Basketball transfer Rob Wright has signed with BYU and will visit campus this weekend. Wright recently signed a $1M+ contract with the Bears to remain in Waco, but as the Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman observes: “There is nothing holding players to these contracts. He re-opened his recruitment and has signed with the Cougars for $3 million.” (link)

KenPom Founder Ken Pomeroy implores you not to let “Grandpa Simpson” tell you NIL and the transfer portal haven’t made men’s college basketball better, writing: “Between the 2009 tournament and this year’s tournament, there was just one case of all four one-seeds making the Elite Eight. And while people seem to think NIL just became a thing this year, it was legal beginning with the 2021-22 season. That year, a 15-seed made the Elite Eight. In 2023, a 16 beat a 1. San Diego State played Florida Atlantic in the Final Four. Last year, Oakland beat Kentucky. 11-seeded NC State team beat Duke (kind of easily) to get to the Final Four.” Furthermore, Pomeroy points out there has always been a wealth discrepancy among conferences and teams. “So it’s a bit premature to think that NIL is ushering in an era of superteams where upsets will disappear from the tournament. This season only fits the narrative if you ignore the complete failure to predict any of this back in November. As with the late-aughts, this figures to be temporary.” Lots more. (link)

+ Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman breaks Creighton AD Marcus Blossom’s hire of High Point’s MBB HC Alan Huss to be Assoc. HC and HC-in-waiting when Greg McDermott exits. Goodman: “Blossom identified national candidates and collaborated with Pres Hendrickson and McDermott to have a plan in place for continuity for the continued success of the program when McDermott steps down. Huss played at Creighton from 1997-2001 and was an assistant on McDermott’s staff from 2017-2023 before becoming the head coach at High Point. In two seasons in the Big South, he’s gone 56-15 overall and is coming off the school’s first NCAA tournament appearance. McDermott has won more than 600 games in his career. He took over at Creighton in 2010 and has led the Bluejays to 10 NCAA tournament appearances. He hired coach Alan Huss.” (link)

Western Michigan AD Dan Bartholomae sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to reflect on leadership, legacy and core values while offering insights from his career journey that began in the mailroom and progressed to the big chair. In reflecting on the early stages of his career, Bartholomae notes that his initial interest was in politics before he spent an undergraduate spring break shadowing athletics administrators at Pittsburgh and found his way to a grad school position with the Panthers: “I started in the mailroom and finished as Deputy AD – sort of a different career trajectory.” Bartholomae also discusses the various ways he translates the leadership skills he learned from both an academic pursuit of politics and an MBA program to athletics, talks through his strategic planning process and offers his strategies for tapping into connection in order to cultivate buy-in from staff and student-athletes. Bartholomae tells Brown he was “drawn to leadership from the time that I was a kid. I played soccer, I wanted to be a captain. You impact the most people when you’re a captain. You get to spend time with the coach and spend time with the officials, you spend time with your team. I was always a musician, and I wanted to be the concertmaster of the orchestra because you lead from the front. Leadership was just always something that I was drawn to mainly because I felt like it gave me an opportunity to solve problems.” Full interview on ADU. (link)

Awful Announcing’s Drew Lerner offers suggestions for how the NCAA could optimize its winter championships in wrestling, men’s and women’s ice hockey, and women’s basketball. For wrestling, Lerner believes the solution is straightforward: stop competing with the men' s basketball championship. “Move the NCAA Wrestling Championships up to begin on Monday and end on Wednesday. That way, the only men’s basketball games the event will compete with are the First Four, and direct competition with the first round will be avoided entirely.” Meanwhile, “one possibility to improve the men’s hockey tournament schedule is to shift the start of the tournament back one week. There is already a one-week gap between the first and second rounds and the Frozen Four. But if the tournament started one week later, which would be Thursday, April 3, this year, the first and second rounds would almost entirely avoid the men’s basketball tournament, aside from direct competition with the Final Four on Saturday night. The obvious downside of this option is competing directly with the Final Four and the championship in the women’s basketball tournament on Friday and Sunday.” For women’s hockey: “A simple move would be to shift the Frozen Four and championship games to Monday and Wednesday, respectively. This way, ESPN would likely find room on a linear network for the semifinal matches, and the championship match would likely earn itself a better time slot.” Finally, Lerner submits playing the women’s hoops tournament’s first round on Monday and Tuesday immediately following the men’s Selection Sunday (March 17 and 18 this year). The second round would then be played on Monday and Tuesday following the conclusion of the men’s second round (March 24 and 25). Everything else remains the same.” More. (link)
