“There’s two mantras that I have if you walk in our back door. ‘Problems yield to effort’ — which is something I heard President Clinton say 20, 25 years ago at a forum — and then ‘Champions do extra.’ You don’t get here without doing extra.” That’s SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy in review of the league’s strong Men’s Basketball season, which culminated in Florida’s national championship. More from Sankey: “I was proud for our ADs, our coaches. It’s not like we pulled some magic string. You don’t do that at a conference level. You have to lay a foundation. And it’s really a tribute to their work.” Florida AD Scott Stricklin chimes in: “We’ve hired really good coaches. I know people want to dig into all this other stuff. And all that other stuff supports it, right? The exposure that the SEC Network and the ESPN contract is giving, the money that we generate overall to support all of our programs, not just men’s basketball. But we started hiring good coaches.” (link)

Sacramento State President Luke Wood went live on Reddit yesterday answering questions. On if he’d had serious talks with the Pac-12, Wood responded: “We had talks with them for sure as well as real conversations with nearly every reasonable conference within our region. So, yes, we have. They have not shown some interest but not great interest.” Wood punts on answering which conference the Olympic sports will compete in post-2026 but defends the new football stadium in that it will help generate revenue for the school. Regarding former NBA player/current Men’s Basketball HC Mike Bibby’s $300K salary: “This is the exact same salary as the prior coach. We have a D1 basketball program, you’re not gonna be able to get a quality coach for anything less than that. And Mike is essentially doing us a favor at that price. Because he cares about Sacramento. We should be thanking him.” On football: “We don’t have to join the Pac 12 in order to benefit [from a revenue increase standpoint]. We just need to be a football bowl series institution. Right now we’re a football championship series institution, which significantly reduces our media value. Currently football is essentially JV. While all of our other sports are varsity. That’s what we’re trying to change.” (link)

Incarnate Word will initially not opt into the House settlement as Cardinals AD Richard Duran remarks: “We think there’s going to be a lot of ups and downs in the transition in year one. Year two is when we’re looking toward opting in. We want to see how things play out and make sure we’re not rushing into it. [...] As we continue to grow our revenues to do those things, we’ll have some availability to better support student-athletes from that perspective in the future. For now, we’re comfortable with what we can do, and we think we’re still going to be able to be competitive in the Southland.” Finally: “A lot of people are saying they’re opting in, but does that really change anything for the department, besides reducing roster limits? It’s cool to say, ‘Yeah, we opted in, just like the Power Four programs.’ But for us, we’re OK with not looking cool at the onset. We want to do what’s right in the long term, and we think giving us enough time and enough runway to get it done right the first time and not rushing into something, that’s what’s in the best interest of our student-athletes and the university.” (link)

Maine hosted media at Alfond Arena earlier this week to show off progress of the $50M worth of upgrades for the facility. Black Bears AD Jude Killy: “One, (it’s) just the presence of the building. We’re going to have the brick pavers add a new entryway into the building. (There’s the) high ceiling entryway and a new concession stand in there, which will really expand our fan amenities. (There’s the) new team store in here, a new Bear Necessities with a brand-new, larger space. Where the old Bear Necessities was before, all that’s going to be a tribute to Maine hockey. The hope is that this is going to help us recruit at a high or higher level. There will be a product on the ice that will hopefully resonate with that as well. It’s paramount. You have to have it. It doesn’t have to be top-notch everything to everyone, but you’ve got to be in that top third, certainly in our league in Hockey East to be able to compete. We’re trying to win national championships on the men’s and women’s sides in hockey. To do that, you have to have the caliber facility that’s going to attract appropriate talent and provide you with the resources to do that.” Construction is expected to be complete by the end of the calendar year. (link)

More from Marshall AD Christian Spears on further monetizing football’s Joan C. Edwards Stadium: “If we’re able to cobble together a little maintenance fund to make our facilities as good as possible, we can do things like recruit Zach Bryan to do a show at the Joan. We’re super excited about the potential of turning that venue into a legitimate concert venue where we can attract major artists and generate revenue. It gives people a good experience. I mean, Zach Bryan is coming to Huntington, West Virginia. I want to keep doing those things and expand it to other spaces.” More. (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde writes on the Nico Iamaleava situation at Tennessee: “On February 13, 2024, Tennessee attorney general Jonathan Skrmetti issued a chest-thumping statement outside a courthouse in Greeneville, Tenn. Skrmetti was legally challenging the NCAA on behalf of the Tennessee Volunteers, and specifically on behalf of quarterback Nico Iamaleava. [...] Fourteen months later, the empowerment of Iamaleava to flex his money-making muscles might be coming back to bite Big Orange. In a reap-what-you-sow moment of the highest order, Tennessee might now be fighting against Iamaleava, not on behalf of him. [...] Has Mr. Skrmetti weighed in on The Holdout yet? Quite a few fans have. The #FreeNico spirit of 2024 seems to be in short supply now. [...] So, in the gray area created with the assistance of people like the attorney general of Tennessee, the quarterback the courts empowered just might become the quarterback who holds a program hostage.” More. + Alabama State AD Jason Cable goes with Rutgers AC Johnetta Hayes as the Hornets new Women’s Basketball HC. (link)
+ SMU Women’s Basketball HC Adia Barnes met with the media after her introductory press conference and among the notable takeaways were these two comments from Barnes: “I talked before about supporting women and supporting women's athletics... If you look across the country, if you look at all the recent hires, they've all hired mid-major, under-qualified people because they don't really care. … I didn't feel like I could win at the level I wanted to (at Arizona)... (SMU) has everything. It has a recruiting base, it's a great city... And then on top of that, the leadership. It's important who you work for... Look nationally -- a lot of ADs don't care." Western Michigan paid for 100 student tickets, at $250 a pop, for the Lawson Lunatics to head to St. Louis for the Frozen Four this weekend. WMU picked up a double OT win on Thursday over defending national champion Denver to advance to tonight’s championship against Boston U. Broncos’ AD Dan Bartholomae: “We’ve always covered the cost of the Lawson Lunatics traveling with us before and we’re not going to stop now. We’re getting the Lunatics here, we’re going to have some fun with them and make them a part of this run because they deserve it. We’re going to make a statement.” (link)

New Mexico Senior Assoc. AD for Compliance/SWA/Deputy Title IX Coordinator Amy Beggin joins AthleticDirectorU’s Anthony Grassi to reflect on serving one’s alma mater and how to translate institutional knowledge into impact. Beggin and Grassi also discuss professional development for leaders, how to take inspiration from conference peers and translate it into tangible steps for the institution, and how to involve compliance staff in the development of a post-House settlement plan. Beggin tells Grassi that not only is compliance work often misunderstood, now is an exciting time to be a compliance staffer: “A lot of people think that compliance is just finding a reason to say no and I couldn't disagree with that more. It’s finding a way to collaborate with coaches, to collaborate with everybody in the department. I think what's so special about compliance is we get to have our hand in every single area in the athletic department. So, to be a part of that, to be a part of where you really get to see the entire athletic department inner workings is something that I really enjoy. And then I think it's exciting with all the rules and things because we get to be Innovative in that sense. We get to be in the room for these House settlement talks, we get to be in the room for revenue-sharing and how does this work and how can we be a part of this to be the first to be able to do something?” Full conversation on ADU. NCAA President Charlie Baker tells NBC’s Nicole Auerbach that the House settlement will provide structure around NIL for the first time, “and we will be able to tell just exactly how much money in the NIL world – on the institutional side and the third-party side – people are investing in sports, especially in particular sports. For me, that’s really important because I think the way this thing’s been working up until now no one knows. They really don't. All you have is what people tell you, and honestly I've come not to believe any of it and I know that's true for a lot of people who cover sports who have told me the same thing. We will at least finally understand how much money on the NIL side people are putting in our schools. … I think that's going to be a big win for everybody because transparency creates accountability, and right now, we don't have either.” (link)

Cleveland State AD Kelsey Gory Harkey’s new three-year contract begins June 1, 2025, and runs through June 30, 2028, and includes a base salary of $210K with $15K in supplemental income if she’s still with the Vikings on June 30 of each year, according to CollegeAD. Should either side wish to extend the contract, they must inform the other in writing at least one year before the contract is up. Gory Harkey can earn an additional $30K in incentives each year and would be owed the remainder of the contract’s base pay if the Vikings terminate the agreement without cause. (link)

Cal AD Jim Knowlton announces that the athletic department is having the best fundraising year in its history. In addition to endowing the men’s and women’s golf programs, Knowlton explains that “we have three more sports that we’ll be announcing very, very soon that are also endowed, and those five endowments alone save us $5M annually because the interest on those endowments pays for the annual expenses. So, this is something I haven't read about any other schools in the country doing. That is going to help us continue to support all of our Olympic sports and continue to support our-student athletes the way we want, so that's been amazing. We've also endowed the fifth head coaching position, another huge announcement that we’ll make over the next few weeks.” Knowlton also talks about the impact of Football GM/longtime NFL HC Ron Rivera, noting he has been able to bring alumni and fans together, help support student-athletes through donations and philanthropy and offer some wisdom to the football staff. “I’ve watched him talking with our coach, talking with our assistant coaches, talking with our student-athletes, and he just has that animal magnetism where people gravitate to him. … You hear all the time ‘Could he do this differently?’ or ‘Should we use him differently?’ We're going to figure out the best way to leverage Ron Rivera, and right now he's helping us in all those three areas.” More from Knowlton. New Mexico AD Fernando Lovo joins the Albuquerque Journal’s Geoff Grammer to cover several topics as he continues to finalize his vision for the Lobos. Lovo says he’s borrowed Texas AD Chris Del Conte’s mantra of “rip off and duplicate” when setting the direction for UNM. “So what I saw work at the University of Texas, during my eight years there, is what I'm trying to emulate here at the University of New Mexico. I have a very flat kind of reporting structure where I've got my executive team. It’s not just one or two individuals; I have a group of individuals, many of which have been named already, that are on my executive team, and I like to be very clear and provide a lot of clarity in terms of whose responsibilities lie under what buckets and just communicate that openly amongst the department. That process was ongoing and then it stopped a little bit with the basketball search. So, I do have a couple of positions here, [including] one that will be on my executive team, and some other critical pieces that we’re working on filling those positions. I would say in the next month or so I'll announce some more shifts and movements in titles and responsibilities.” Full podcast. (link)

Marshall AD Christian Spears told the school’s Athletics Committee this week that the Thundering Herd “will probably not have a single walk-on” if the House settlement passes. “What we’re going to do is use the full roster limit. Football, as an example, there are 105 kids that can be on the roster. We’re going to keep our traditional 85 football scholarships and add 20 tuition waivers. … We can make sure that they have success and graduate while they compete. It’s going to be a model that I think our student-athletes will appreciate. It allows us to retain athletes at a higher clip. There’s a real benefit, and I hope it translates to less transfer portal. You’re on aid and you’re part of something, you’re more likely to stay and play.” Spears also explained that construction on the Shewey Deck at Joan C. Edwards Stadium “will begin in earnest on the day after the spring game. You’ll see some construction starting to happen.” The $1.8M project will add a deck to the building that overlooks the end zone, with seats underneath. Renovations to the Cam Henderson Center are also planned, and Spears notes the Herd is “moving our women’s basketball coaches into another office area near the practice gym. That gives us an opportunity to find a donor to fund a new capital project to have suites
in the arena. This is a vision that the basketball program has had for a long time — dedicated suites like we have in football. We have a budget. We believe it will generate a quarter of a million dollars for us annually to create another revenue stream, lower our deficit and provide a much better fan experience.” More. (link)

Tennessee QB Nico Iamaleava did not attend spring practice Friday, and ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports Iamaleava's absence “came as a surprise to coaches and players.” The news comes amid reports that Iamaleava is working on a new NIL contract with the Vols after QBs in this year’s transfer cycle, including Miami's Carson Beck and Duke's Darian Mensah, signed NIL deals for “significantly more money this offseason.” Thamel adds: “The situation has become a growing source of frustration among administrators at Tennessee and within the locker room, sources said. The day before the winter portal window closed in December, sources told ESPN that Iamaleava's representatives wanted to renegotiate his deal in the $4M range, but his deal was unchanged. He's expected to make $2.4M with the Vols this year.” UT, sources tell Thamel, “wasn’t going to blink and pay him any more money." (link)

At least eight men’s basketball teams will have war chests of $10M+ for next season’s rosters, according to 247Sports’ Travis Branham (link), and The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman believes the number will be closer to 15 (link). Goodman: “I polled 25-plus high-major coaches and this is what I came up with as far as salary numbers for this season. Obviously, there will be some outliers but this is a pretty good feel for what guys are getting now. PROJECTED ELITE GUYS (Top 10-15): $2.5 to 4M. PROJECTED ALL-LEAGUE PLAYER: $1.5 to 2.5M. PROJECTED STARTERS: $500K to 1.5M. PROJECTED BENCH PLAYER: $200K to 700K.” Heitner Legal Founder Darren Heitner adds: “This is pretty conservative if it's an SEC or Big Ten school. The floor and ceiling for elite guys and all-league players are higher. I'm even seeing some guys pegged to be starters who aren't ‘all-league’ receive $2.5M offers or more.” (link, link)

UMass Lowell has received a $4M philanthropic commitment from alumnus John Kennedy to fund the enhancement of athletics facilities and support the needs of River Hawk student-athletes. AD Lynn Coutts: “This historic gift will be transformational for our department to be able to provide the resources that many future generations of River Hawks need to excel in the changing landscape of college athletics. I am immensely grateful for John, and his unwavering support of what UMass Lowell Athletics is all about and belief in what we can become.” In honor of Kennedy’s support, the UMass Board of Trustees has voted to rename the Costello Athletic Center as the Kennedy Family Athletic Complex in a special dedication ceremony slated for October 2025.
