West Virginia officially introduced North Texas AD Baker as the Mountaineers’ new AD. President Gee explained in his remarks that “when we interviewed Wren, I can tell you that he fits every one of our criteria and, in addition to being an exceptionally – and I’m going to underline exceptionally – talented athletics director, he’s also a very positive person who easily connects and engages with everyone he meets. He understands the vision, he knows where we want to go, and I have no doubt that he’ll get us there.” Gee also explained that TurnkeyZRG presented multiple options, ranging from candidates from Power 5 schools to those outside of college athletics. Baker’s annual compensation will be $1.1M plus incentives, and his base salary will increase by $50K every year starting on January 1, 2025. Baker also stands to earn a one-time retention bonus of $75K after his first two weeks of employment and a $250K retention bonus on March 1, 2026. WVU would owe Baker 75% of his remaining base salary if it were to part ways with Baker without cause. Baker would owe the university $1M were he to leave Morgantown in the first year of his contract, and that figures decreases by $200K each year. (link); In the full press conference, Baker indicates North Texas was confronted with difficulties in trying to secure the necessary resources to support student-athletes when he first arrived. “I really think there’s a lot of complexities in what we do, but it really comes down to three things: Do we have the right people? Are we giving them the right tools? And are they following the right processes? When I look at North Texas, as I onboarded there, we did not have some of the right people, and we did not equip them with the right tools.” Baker says his first priority at WVU will be to “make sure that our programs who are here are resourced in a way that they can compete for championships and be relevant nationally.” Full presser. The Knight Commission at its winter meetings urged the DI Board of Directors to act more urgently on the reforms it charged the Transformation Committee to design and implement last year. Knight Commission Co-Chair Duncan: “From what we heard, it seems clear the initiatives being considered by the Transformation Committee and by FBS Athletics Directors through the LEAD1 Association still do not tackle what is at the foundation of the broken governance and financial frameworks of Division I sports, particularly in FBS football.” Co-Chair Zimpher adds that one particular area yet to be addressed involves the formula for distributing March Madness revenues, which awards $160M based on the success of MBB teams in the tournament but awards zero dollars based on the success of WBB teams. “Every university president on the Division I Board of Directors knows full well that discriminatory gender-based payouts are indefensible. And they know full well that big financial incentives inevitably reflect values and influence the priorities of Division I programs. This reform is within their full authority to change and to change now.” The Knight Commission applauded LEAD1 for its recommendation to place four independent directors, including two former FBS student-athletes, on any new FBS Football Governing Board, but Duncan added: “While some aspects of the LEAD1 proposal could improve FBS governance, the proposal fails to address the elephant of FBS reform, the role of the CFP and its soaring revenues.” More. U.S. District Judge Bolton last week rejected Grand Canyon’s bid to reverse the U.S. Department of Education’s decision to consider the institution a for-profit under Title IV. The Department of Education in 2019 determined GCU is a for-profit institution, citing a contract that gives a sizable portion of the institution’s revenue to its former owner. GCU had argued that the Department of Education should consider the institution a nonprofit under Title IV because the IRS approved the GCU’s tax-exempt status in 2015; however, Bolton ruled the process for determining whether a college is nonprofit under Title IV is separate from IRS approvals. GCU says it will “continue to operate as a legal nonprofit entity while continuing to produce unprecedented results addressing the major issues affecting higher education — specifically the high cost of education, amount of student debt, lack of relevant industry-oriented programs and declining diversity on college campuses.” (link)

Scanned numbers at Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium earlier this month dipped below 50K for the first time since the Omaha World-Herald began tracking the numbers. For the Huskers’ matchup with Wisconsin, the number of tickets scanned was 46,613, 8,225 fewer than the previous low of 54,838 for the 2018 Illinois game. The 2022 Minnesota game — at 57,730 — became the third game to have fewer than 60,000 scanned tickets since the World-Herald started charting the totals. The World-Herald’s McKewon notes, however, that NU’s “sellout streak survived to 389 games through the use of a ‘Red Carpet Experience’ that matches booster-bought tickets to underserved youth. The streak is sacred enough among Husker high rollers that it’s likely to continue whether rank-and-file fans purchase tickets or not.” (link)

The Wall Street Journal’s Bachman profiles volleyball’s rise in popularity, observing the phenomenon is occurring at all levels of the sport. Notably in the collegiate space: Wisconsin’s championship win over Nebraska last year drew 1.19M viewers, and this year’s rematch saw 587K viewers tune in on the Big Ten Network. In the past seven years, BTN has doubled the number of volleyball matches it shows, and Bachman notes: “Network executives believe so strongly in the potential of volleyball that they’ve worked with conference leaders to schedule matches so they follow, and receive promotion during, the network’s crown-jewel football games. The strategy worked. This year, TV audiences for volleyball matches with football game lead-ins were more than twice the size of those for stand-alone matches.” However, as more and more pro leagues continue popping up, Nebraska HC Cook voices his concern that the marketplace will become too crowded and adds: “I think the pro level now in college volleyball, with NIL, is college.” More. Business of College Sports’ Dosh reports on a new Dunkin’ Donuts campaign which includes “NIL deals with 23 student athletes plus the Northwestern field hockey team, and includes IP from all 24 universities. First campaign we've seen of this scale with athletes and schools, coordinated by LEARFIELD.” (link)

AthleteTalk founder Gill, a former director of student-athlete wellness and personal development at Texas, joins D1.ticker/Connect's Garcia Cichosz to talk about how student-athletes and athletic departments are tapping into his app to address mental health and wellness issues relevant to athletes. The app, inspired by social media feeds and the prioritization of visual elements, commenting and sharing, is utilized by partners like St. Thomas, Norfolk State and Marist, and includes wellness plans on issues like social justice, loss and race. Gill also discusses his use of NIL to promote the app and increase mental health transparency among athlete communities. Gill: "We have to figure out how [mental health resources] can appeal to young people. We know that social media is important to young people, we know that social media has been proliferated with different wellness and mental health messages... AthleteTalk combines this social media frenzy with wellness and inspiration, to combine those two to try to appeal to young people." (link)

Nike has ended its deal with Brooklyn Nets star Irving a month after suspending the relationship when Irving “platformed a film full of antisemitic tropes on Twitter,” according to Yahoo’s Rohrbach. After refusing to condemn or apologize for the film, Irving was also suspended by the Nets. (link, link)

Not having NFL Thursday Night Football does not have an impact on Fox's leverage in negotiations with distributors, per Fox Corp. CFO Tomsic, who also notes Amazon and Apple are playing a much more active role in sports rights equation; however, owners and leagues are still placing a premium on sheer reach (i.e. broad-based TV). Asked whether AVOD will be a potential home for live sports, Tomic says the Tubi model does not support big rights deals and also argues Fox has probably the best sports betting position of any media company with the option to acquire an 18.6% stake in Fan Duel over next decade. Also from Tomic: Fox Nation -- the Fox News direct-to-consumer streaming play -- will not get to the scale of other big media streaming plays, Tomic also reveals, adding that monetizing Fox News consumers with an SVOD product but with a “measured” approach.
