Western Michigan won its first Men’s Hockey national championship last night with a 6-2 win over Boston U. Here’s the call from ESPN’s John Buccigross. (link); Broncos HC Pat Ferschweiler: “We've had great recruiting, as you can tell by the team on the ice. But what we're trying to do is build something that players want to come to. We talked about the alums earlier, how proud they are. What I know and certainly felt when I played there is players who play at Western Michigan love being Broncos. And there's a true pride in our program from top to bottom. And when you're there you love your experience there. That's what we want to create first, and we believe that will attract players. [...] Amazing performance from Bronco Nation all weekend, especially tonight. It certainly did feel like a home game. And you look up there, Kalamazoo is only 150,000 people. Felt like half the town was here. It was great. You could feel the presence in the streets during the day. They push our players forward. We don't achieve at the level we achieve at every day without their belief in our program and their support of our program.” (link)

Western Michigan spent roughly $300K on its first Frozen Four run, but ice hockey produces the second-most ticket sales on campus ($500,777) behind only football ($828,457), nearly five times as much as Broncos men’s basketball ($103,396) and more than double all the other non-football sports combined ($164,658). In FY24, WMU spent roughly $2.46M on the hockey program, edging the spend on men’s hoops ($2.28M). An unnamed donor has agreed to fund the construction of a $515M arena that is slated to open in downtown Kalamazoo in two years. Despite the expenses, AD Dan Bartholomae said of the Broncos’ semifinal win: “It puts you on a stage that no other aspect of the university really can. We’re ready to seize the moment.” (link)

Tennessee Tension…
+ Tennessee Football decided to go its separate ways from high-profile QB Nico Iamaleava after what effectively was a contract holdout. Vols HC Josh Heupel: “This program has been around for a long time. There are a lot of great coaches, a lot of great players who came before that laid the cornerstone pieces, the legacy, the tradition that is Tennessee football. It's going to be around a long time after I'm gone and after they're gone.” (link)
+ The Athletic’s Ralph Russo & David Ubben write: “Iamaleava was set to make around $2.2 million this year, but two people briefed on the situation said he was seeking closer to $4 million.” (link)
+ The Athletic’s Chris Vannini: “Iamaleava once again has brought college football a lot closer to … whatever its future will be. His NIL deal going public before enrolling at Tennessee and the legal defense of it led to more money for players. Iamaleava gave a lot more leverage to the players by knowing his value. But his public breakup with Tennessee has given some leverage back to the schools. Had Tennessee and its collective blinked, more stars elsewhere might’ve started public holdouts. Instead, Vols fans have backed coach Josh Heupel, and players probably know the public won’t be on their side.“ (link)
+ On3’s Pete Nakos: “ESPN reported Saturday that one quarterback already got more money from his school Friday after Tennessee’s collective called third-party officials tied to him. Multiple sources have told On3 that they expect a ripple effect, with non-SEC Power Four quarterbacks around the country expected to receive raises in light of the Tennessee opening. Schools cannot afford to lose their starter with less than five months until the college football season kicks off. Tennessee has already begun to vet several options, especially with the sales pitch of playing in the SEC.” (link)

Ole Miss AD Keith Carter on the progress for potential renovations to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium: “We kind of put a lot of our facilities stuff, the bigger items, on hold while we figure out NIL and the revenue sharing and all that. Probably within the next 12 months we're going to have to really dive back in on the stadium." Where will the funding come from? Carter: “Not private equity, where they kind of take over your department, but there's a lot of cash on the sidelines out there. Investors that want to come in and help. They would get some return. Using other people's money to help us build projects is something we're going to start looking at. We understand that the stadium is going to be a big part of that.” (link)

New Mexico State received $3.42M from the Legislature for athletics-related capital outlay projects, including $2M for new baseball/softball turf, $225K for weight room upgrades, $450K for new press box/bleachers for soccer/softball, $300K for volleyball facility upgrades and $145K for soccer facility upgrades, per the Las Cruces Sun News’ Nick Coppola. Illinois State celebrated the new brown and white logo of OSF HealthCare on the Athletic Indoor Practice Center yesterday. OSF decided to make a significant financial contribution to the long-anticipated ISU athletic indoor practice facility on the heels of a five-year agreement that made OSF HealthCare the official health care provider for Illinois State University athletics in an exclusive partnership. As part of that agreement, OSF HealthCare provides Illinois State University student-athletes with access to athletic trainers, sports medicine providers, orthopedic surgeons, and behavioral health professionals. The facility originally opened in September 2023. (link)

Pepperdine AD Tanner Gardner talks about his approach as a leader and explains that “the biggest way I try to impact our student-athletes is with hiring decisions. It's so important that we hire great coaches, because they have the most personal interaction with our student-athletes. Our vision is to have a championship athletic program based on Christian values. It’s vital our coaches imbue that in their programs. … I've been part of athletic communities at Stanford, Harvard, and Rice. More than any of them, Pepperdine is very clear on its values and mission. What's distinctive about us is our Christian focus. We support academic excellence. We support athletic excellence. And we do both those things for the glory of God.” A three-time All-American wrestler at Stanford, Gardner says he wants Pepperdine’s student-athletes to have “the same experience that I did competing in Division I sports. When they leave here, I want them to say, ‘That experience changed my life, and I could never give back to Pepperdine what it gave to me.’ … College athletics changed my life. I was transformed personally, professionally, athletically, and spiritually. In five years at Stanford, my life was fully changed.” (link)

Speaking of Rice, the Owls produced advertising and branding value of $562M over the past three years through athletic events via broadcast television, streaming and social media, according to a study by Collegiate Consulting. The company gathered information from 2021-24 via a mix of public and confidential data from Rice to create “projections to substitute unidentified information to determine the total average annual economic impact of the Rice intercollegiate athletic program at $285M annually and a three-year valuation of $854M. … Collegiate Consulting was able to determine over the past three years; the game day and event economic impact of Rice athletic events, camps and non-athletic events held in athletic venues is $115.72M, the economic impact of athletic staff and student athletes is $97.6M, a direct revenue impact of $63.68M.” (link)

With victories by its men's and women's lacrosse programs over Navy yesterday, Army clinched the Army-Navy Star Series Presented by USAA for the first time since 2013-14. This marks only the fifth time Army has beaten Navy in the all-sports challenge between the two service academies which began in 1978-79. The Black Knights also won the Star Series in 1984-85, 1994-95, 1995-96 and 2013-14. (link)

@1QLeadership Question: Is there a success blueprint for leadership in college athletics?
Dr. Jackie Schuman, Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics at UMASS-Boston, asks Anthony Azama, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Director of Athletics at WashU, about his blueprint for success as a leader in college athletics. Azama describes his view on college athletics and its benefits to all involved.
• Passion does not run on fumes the way purpose does
• College athletics teaches people how to respond to failure better than anybody else on a college campus
Both Schuman and Azama were student-athletes at Vanderbilt before starting their respective journeys in college athletics administration. They reflect on their experiences and how they have shaped some of their current thoughts on leadership. 🎧 on Apple Podcasts or Spotify 📽 on YouTube

“There’s two mantras that I have if you walk in our back door. ‘Problems yield to effort’ — which is something I heard President Clinton say 20, 25 years ago at a forum — and then ‘Champions do extra.’ You don’t get here without doing extra.” That’s SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy in review of the league’s strong Men’s Basketball season, which culminated in Florida’s national championship. More from Sankey: “I was proud for our ADs, our coaches. It’s not like we pulled some magic string. You don’t do that at a conference level. You have to lay a foundation. And it’s really a tribute to their work.” Florida AD Scott Stricklin chimes in: “We’ve hired really good coaches. I know people want to dig into all this other stuff. And all that other stuff supports it, right? The exposure that the SEC Network and the ESPN contract is giving, the money that we generate overall to support all of our programs, not just men’s basketball. But we started hiring good coaches.” (link)

Sacramento State President Luke Wood went live on Reddit yesterday answering questions. On if he’d had serious talks with the Pac-12, Wood responded: “We had talks with them for sure as well as real conversations with nearly every reasonable conference within our region. So, yes, we have. They have not shown some interest but not great interest.” Wood punts on answering which conference the Olympic sports will compete in post-2026 but defends the new football stadium in that it will help generate revenue for the school. Regarding former NBA player/current Men’s Basketball HC Mike Bibby’s $300K salary: “This is the exact same salary as the prior coach. We have a D1 basketball program, you’re not gonna be able to get a quality coach for anything less than that. And Mike is essentially doing us a favor at that price. Because he cares about Sacramento. We should be thanking him.” On football: “We don’t have to join the Pac 12 in order to benefit [from a revenue increase standpoint]. We just need to be a football bowl series institution. Right now we’re a football championship series institution, which significantly reduces our media value. Currently football is essentially JV. While all of our other sports are varsity. That’s what we’re trying to change.” (link)

Incarnate Word will initially not opt into the House settlement as Cardinals AD Richard Duran remarks: “We think there’s going to be a lot of ups and downs in the transition in year one. Year two is when we’re looking toward opting in. We want to see how things play out and make sure we’re not rushing into it. [...] As we continue to grow our revenues to do those things, we’ll have some availability to better support student-athletes from that perspective in the future. For now, we’re comfortable with what we can do, and we think we’re still going to be able to be competitive in the Southland.” Finally: “A lot of people are saying they’re opting in, but does that really change anything for the department, besides reducing roster limits? It’s cool to say, ‘Yeah, we opted in, just like the Power Four programs.’ But for us, we’re OK with not looking cool at the onset. We want to do what’s right in the long term, and we think giving us enough time and enough runway to get it done right the first time and not rushing into something, that’s what’s in the best interest of our student-athletes and the university.” (link)

Maine hosted media at Alfond Arena earlier this week to show off progress of the $50M worth of upgrades for the facility. Black Bears AD Jude Killy: “One, (it’s) just the presence of the building. We’re going to have the brick pavers add a new entryway into the building. (There’s the) high ceiling entryway and a new concession stand in there, which will really expand our fan amenities. (There’s the) new team store in here, a new Bear Necessities with a brand-new, larger space. Where the old Bear Necessities was before, all that’s going to be a tribute to Maine hockey. The hope is that this is going to help us recruit at a high or higher level. There will be a product on the ice that will hopefully resonate with that as well. It’s paramount. You have to have it. It doesn’t have to be top-notch everything to everyone, but you’ve got to be in that top third, certainly in our league in Hockey East to be able to compete. We’re trying to win national championships on the men’s and women’s sides in hockey. To do that, you have to have the caliber facility that’s going to attract appropriate talent and provide you with the resources to do that.” Construction is expected to be complete by the end of the calendar year. (link)

More from Marshall AD Christian Spears on further monetizing football’s Joan C. Edwards Stadium: “If we’re able to cobble together a little maintenance fund to make our facilities as good as possible, we can do things like recruit Zach Bryan to do a show at the Joan. We’re super excited about the potential of turning that venue into a legitimate concert venue where we can attract major artists and generate revenue. It gives people a good experience. I mean, Zach Bryan is coming to Huntington, West Virginia. I want to keep doing those things and expand it to other spaces.” More. (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde writes on the Nico Iamaleava situation at Tennessee: “On February 13, 2024, Tennessee attorney general Jonathan Skrmetti issued a chest-thumping statement outside a courthouse in Greeneville, Tenn. Skrmetti was legally challenging the NCAA on behalf of the Tennessee Volunteers, and specifically on behalf of quarterback Nico Iamaleava. [...] Fourteen months later, the empowerment of Iamaleava to flex his money-making muscles might be coming back to bite Big Orange. In a reap-what-you-sow moment of the highest order, Tennessee might now be fighting against Iamaleava, not on behalf of him. [...] Has Mr. Skrmetti weighed in on The Holdout yet? Quite a few fans have. The #FreeNico spirit of 2024 seems to be in short supply now. [...] So, in the gray area created with the assistance of people like the attorney general of Tennessee, the quarterback the courts empowered just might become the quarterback who holds a program hostage.” More. + SMU Women’s Basketball HC Adia Barnes met with the media after her introductory press conference and among the notable takeaways were these two comments from Barnes: “I talked before about supporting women and supporting women's athletics... If you look across the country, if you look at all the recent hires, they've all hired mid-major, under-qualified people because they don't really care. … I didn't feel like I could win at the level I wanted to (at Arizona)... (SMU) has everything. It has a recruiting base, it's a great city... And then on top of that, the leadership. It's important who you work for... Look nationally -- a lot of ADs don't care." Western Michigan paid for 100 student tickets, at $250 a pop, for the Lawson Lunatics to head to St. Louis for the Frozen Four this weekend. WMU picked up a double OT win on Thursday over defending national champion Denver to advance to tonight’s championship against Boston U. Broncos’ AD Dan Bartholomae: “We’ve always covered the cost of the Lawson Lunatics traveling with us before and we’re not going to stop now. We’re getting the Lunatics here, we’re going to have some fun with them and make them a part of this run because they deserve it. We’re going to make a statement.” (link)

New Mexico Senior Assoc. AD for Compliance/SWA/Deputy Title IX Coordinator Amy Beggin joins AthleticDirectorU’s Anthony Grassi to reflect on serving one’s alma mater and how to translate institutional knowledge into impact. Beggin and Grassi also discuss professional development for leaders, how to take inspiration from conference peers and translate it into tangible steps for the institution, and how to involve compliance staff in the development of a post-House settlement plan. Beggin tells Grassi that not only is compliance work often misunderstood, now is an exciting time to be a compliance staffer: “A lot of people think that compliance is just finding a reason to say no and I couldn't disagree with that more. It’s finding a way to collaborate with coaches, to collaborate with everybody in the department. I think what's so special about compliance is we get to have our hand in every single area in the athletic department. So, to be a part of that, to be a part of where you really get to see the entire athletic department inner workings is something that I really enjoy. And then I think it's exciting with all the rules and things because we get to be Innovative in that sense. We get to be in the room for these House settlement talks, we get to be in the room for revenue-sharing and how does this work and how can we be a part of this to be the first to be able to do something?” Full conversation on ADU.
