Rather than basketball accounting for roughly 20 cents of every media rights dollar, Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark “sees the intrinsic value of Big 12 football and basketball content as eventually exceeding $1 in the media marketplace, with the latter having greater upside relative to its current valuation,” according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who writes: “His goal: Position the conference to tap into that unrealized potential by the time 2030 arrives. And the data — both specific to the Big 12 and broadly across the sport — suggests Yormark could be on the right side of history. … He sees basketball’s value rising markedly as streaming platforms acquire more content and grab a larger share of the audience. While college football attracts massive viewership (more than 5M viewers) glued to single broadcasts, basketball is different. It’s a tonnage sport — and tonnage, especially quality tonnage, will increase in significance as streaming grows. According to data through the 2023-24 season shared by a sports media research company, college basketball fans are 144% more likely than the general population to subscribe to ESPN+, whereas college football fans are merely 41% more likely.” Additionally, Wilner notes that college basketball fans have “higher affinity levels across all major sports than college football fans and are, for example, 1.8 times more likely than the general population to be fans of Major League Baseball. Those numbers are significant because cross-sport affinity is coveted by streamers as a means of preventing subscription decay over a full year of content. … Yormark’s long-haul goal, it seems, is to offer enough high-quality inventory across as many months as possible. When football ends, high-level college basketball provides a hedge against churn.” (link)

ESPN’s Heather Dinich reports the “CFP management committee is expecting to discuss different future format options at its meeting next week in Las Colinas, Texas, sources said. No decisions are expected, but there is a desire to consider options beyond the 12-team status quo and a model with automatic qualifiers for 2026 and beyond. The commissioners are expecting the CFP to present different format options and ways to modernize the selection process.” (link)

The Athletic’s Mike Vorkunov unpacks the gambling investigations in college hoops and the NBA and notes that with sportsbooks on the lookout now, “each unusual line movement is scrutinized closely. It may be a sign of potential illegal activity, or it may be what one sportsbook director called ‘seeing ghosts.’” For instance, as it relates to the January 30, 2025, game between UNC Wilmington and North Carolina A&T that was flagged for unusual activity, the sportsbook director says: “I don’t think there was anything behind that line movement. It wasn’t that suspicious; everyone is on high alert.” CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio adds that neither he nor the conference have been contacted by the FBI. “We live in a world right now where there is so much legalized gambling that is part of our makeup as a country you would hope that we wouldn’t be in scandalous situations. But the fact that gambling is legal, we have opened the door to these kinds of situations.” (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Kevin Sweeney examines how men’s basketball rosters will be constructed post-House and notes that it’s not a given that teams will utilize all 15 scholarships and “allocate precious revenue-share and NIL dollars to players at the back end of their rosters. Even the biggest budgets nationally, believed to be just north of $10M for a handful of top-tier programs, can vanish quickly if spread around 12 to 15 players. Some will operate with a traditional 12 to 13 players and allow their walk-ons to stay on the team in those final few roster spots; others may take it even further and focus all their resources to nine or 10 players and backfill the remaining roster spots with dart throws. You’ll see very few teams fill all 15 roster spots with players talented enough to make a real impact that season, both for budgetary and also chemistry reasons.” Sweeney adds that “one program I spoke to earlier this cycle said they wanted to ensure they spent 75% of their overall budget on their projected starting five after spreading their dollars around far too much the previous year, and that general framework is something that has been echoed in a number of conversations in recent days and weeks. The thinking: Spending $500K each on two mediocre wings is less efficient than betting big on a $700K or $800K potential high-level starter and using a developmental piece in the $200K range behind them.” (link)

Florida generated $200.09M in revenue during FY24, up 5.8% over FY23. Ticket sales increased from $35.098M in FY23 to $39.694M in 2024. The Gators’ football team accounted for $100.796M of the revenue, followed by men’s basketball ($14.34M) and baseball ($4.328M). In women's sports, three UF programs generated more than $1M in revenue ― volleyball ($1.24M), softball ($1.14M) and gymnastics ($1.05M). Women's basketball, a significant revenue-driver at other SEC schools such as South Carolina, LSU and Tennessee, generated just $295K in revenue. On the expenses side, UF reported $179.24M to finish the fiscal year with a $20.8M surplus. (link)

Jackson State has relied more heavily on subsidies since the departure of former Football HC Deion Sanders, according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit and Eben Novy-Williams, who report that in FY23, JSU reported $5.2M in student fees and direct institutional support. That total jumped to $8.5M in FY24. “The increase offset a drop in revenue, much of which was likely related to the departure of Sanders, whose celebrity status and headline recruits made Jackson State a rare FCS football program to draw national attention. In the Tigers’ first year without Sanders, football ticket revenue fell from $3.2M to $2M. Department revenue from programs, parking and concessions fell from $415K to $128K.” Football spending, however, increased by 5% the year after Sanders left, going from $14.1M to $14.8M. (link)

+ Former Ohio State AD Gene Smith is joining the Under Armour Board of Directors and tells Sportico’s Daniel Libit and Eben Novy-Williams that he was approached by Founder/CEO Kevin Plank “a while ago,” adding: “My familiarity with the college space, what is going on now in terms of the changes and transformation, is added value to the board room.” Asked about the brand’s goals in college athletics moving forward, Smith says: “I think it is going to take a number of years before this really shakes out…and apparel companies and all partners are going to have to adjust to it. I can’t speak to what that will be. I wish I had that crystal ball, but you have to be willing to pivot.” As a non-management director of the company, Smith is set to earn an annual retainer of $90K in cash and $150K in restricted stock units, which will vest in full at the following year’s annual stockholders meeting. Former Stanford Football HC Troy Taylor has released a statement concerning his termination which reads, in part: “A private workplace investigation was recently improperly disclosed to local and national media. The investigation that took place in June 2023 was conducted due to a complaint from an athletic administrator that claimed that I tried to remove her as our football administrator for an unfair reason. Although I disagreed with the complaint, I took it seriously and fully cooperated. The investigation, which I still have never seen, concluded that I did not act unfairly. On February 29, 2024, Stanford gave me a contract extension and raise … Later, in March 2024, a second complaint was made by a member of the compliance office regarding a discussion about the physical speed at which Stanford players could participate in a walk-through. This was resolved in July 2024. Two other witnesses (one male and one female) were present during the initial discussion about the speed at which players could participate in a walk-through. Both told me at the time that my behavior was appropriate. Nevertheless, I willingly complied with the second investigation, this time based on this brief interaction. Based on the investigator's conclusion related to this interaction, which I disagreed with, Stanford asked that I forfeit an agreed upon raise and change my tone. I accepted Stanford's demand last summer for the sake of the team. I was not shown the private and confidential second report that was also improperly disclosed to ESPN recently. I've not been the subject of any other complaints or investigations since this investigation ended last summer. The media's recent portrayal of me is unfair, wrong, and contrary to my professional track record and the person I am and have always been. The truth is that Stanford terminated me without cause and, as a result, is honoring the original payment terms of my contract.” Full statement. (link)

Eugene Toriko owner Maurice Eugene Smith has admitted to running a Ponzi-style scheme that victimized multiple clients, including George Mason’s men’s basketball team, which found out last summer that a trip to the Bahamas had never been booked despite paying Smith’s firm $160K. Sportico’s Daniel Libit reports that earlier this month Smith entered a plea agreement for a single count of wire fraud and “agreed to pay a $250K fine, provide full restitution to the George Mason University Foundation and his other victims, and forfeit any assets the court deems connected to the fraud. In exchange for pleading, prosecutors agreed to recommend to the court a reduced sentence for a crime that could have seen Smith imprisoned for decades if he were found guilty at trial.” (link)

Former North Dakota Women’s Soccer HC Chris Logan has filed a federal lawsuit against the university, claiming it retaliated against him and violated the state’s Whistleblower Act. Specifically, Logan claims UND chose not to renew his contract after he reported disparities between men’s and women’s soccer facilities and resources at the university. Unlike the men’s facilities, the women’s soccer field lacked proper security and enclosure, only had two small bleachers for spectators, and had a shed for a press box, according to Logan, who is seeking compensation for financial losses, mental anguish, and reputational damage. Logan is also asking the university to implement policies regarding retaliation and to address gender-based disparities in its athletic programs. (link)

SMU AD Damon Evans joins 365 Sports and says he spoke “quite a bit” with incoming President Jay Hartzell before accepting the Mustangs job and notes that “for SMU to say, ‘Let's shoot for the moon, let's shoot for the stars,’ that's what they did [by hiring Hartzell]. So, he was very involved and he's one of the main reasons that I came to this institution. I wanted to make sure that the individual that I would be working for and working with, that we could partner together – and that's the first word he utilized was ‘partnership.’ And to hear that come out and his vision for this institution as a whole and the role that athletics plays at the institution was something that was just so good to hear – music to my ears.” Evans also posits there needs to be two-way agreements to which both institutions and student-athletes must adhere: “How do we get there? Maybe we need to collectively bargain. Maybe we need some help from Congress to do so. But what we have to focus on are the things that we can control as athletics administrators, and we’ve got to tell a better story because I think to a certain extent our industry has lost the public's trust. We’ve got to gain that trust back and make people understand what we're doing to enhance and enrich the lives of student-athletes.” Full podcast. (link)

Fairfield President Mark Nemec outlines three ways athletics fit into the university’s overarching mission of remaining nationally prominent: “First and foremost, as educators, it's really critical that our student-athletes and our students who are fans see it as part of their developmental experience. So, it's both celebrating wins but it’s also dealing with setbacks.” Second, Nemec cites the importance of competition and winning. “And it’s about not winning above all else, but it’s about giving one’s best effort to achieve a result, which, in many cases, can and should be a win.” Finally, Nemec explains the role athletics play in telling Fairfield’s story. “Athletics and it doesn't just have to be men's and women's basketball, right, the fact that our men's lacrosse team is now ranked in the top 20 certainly gets us notice the success we've had as I mentioned earlier and women's athletics across the board gets us notice, so using athletics as a vehicle by which our story is better understood is also really critical to how I think of it fitting within the institution. … At a lot of universities, not even just DI universities, athletics is sort of an entity unto itself, whereas here it’s fully integrated into who we are and what we aspire to be.” More from Nemec. SEC schools will have to spend at least $2.5M on new scholarships starting with the 2025-26 year if the House settlement is approved, according to CollegeAD, which adds: “While the SEC has capped football scholarships at 85, sources say that the league is not expected to mandate how scholarships are used in other sports. Sources say institutions will have the freedom to set scholarship limits for all sports other than football, as long as the $2.5M in new scholarships is reached.” (link)

Boise State Asst. Professor Sam Ehrlich with a thread of House settlement objectors' submissions, which were due by midnight. Of note is one from “MoloLamken et al. They also push back against the parties' justifications for roster limits, arguing the parties failed to explain how the caps improve competitive balance/output as they argued as procompetitive justifications.” Lots here. The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner submits that “when the barrage of lawsuits and kneecapping of NCAA rules will end, nobody knows. But how they will end seems fairly clear, for there are only two paths out of the mayhem: Congress swoops in with antitrust protection for the NCAA…[or] a collective bargaining agreement [is reached] between the NCAA and the athletes.” Starnes Davis Florie attorney Jay Ezelle tells Wilner the CBA path is trickier than has been discussed: “It’s easy to say that employment and a CBA would solve everything, but that’s not really true. If the world is football players, basketball players and what you would need to do to satisfy Title IX requirements, how do you do that? Who is the CBA with? The issues facing power conference football players are different from the issues facing players in the Southland Conference. The issues for a rower in the power conferences are different from the issues for a football player in the power conferences. In fact, they might conflict. A CBA for all sports at all levels is impossible. The NFL can do it because it has uniformity.” (link)

Indiana State professor Craig Morehead and Maine professor Nicholas Swim in a guest post for Extra Points examine what will happen to the track walk-ons in the wake of the House settlement. To do so, they asked DI coaches and administrators and explain that “we collected 88 usable responses to an open-ended questionnaire on the current landscape of the sport, conversations they were having with various stakeholder groups (i.e., athletes, peers, administration), and how the pending settlement may impact their program, athletic department, university, and sport. Respondents were ‘overwhelmingly concerned’ about a particular negative impact on ‘walk-ons, developmental athletes, and high school recruits.’ One Power 5 HC suggested a capped roster will likely mean that ‘we no longer have time to give athletes the 2-3 years that it often takes to become great athletes at the college level,’ which some are concerned may have a ‘knock-on effect’ for Team USA Olympic development (Goodbread, 2024). Although many coaches mentioned that this may lead to a ‘trickle-down’ effect with more talent parity, there has been mixed evidence on the effect of parity within college sport when scholarship limits have been introduced (Sutter & Winkler, 2003).” Morehead and Swim note that ultimately, what becomes of athletes who lose their roster spots “likely depends on how important being a college athlete is to one’s identity. There will almost certainly be a flurry of transfer portal activity, and high school athletes who aspire to run in college may begin looking at options other than Division I, both of which may have positive effects on enrollment at Division II, Division III, NAIA, Junior College, and NCCAA institutions.” Lots more. Michigan State is moving forward with a 14-acre mixed-use development project, the centerpiece of which will be a $150M, 6K-seat Olympic sports arena. SBJ’s Bret McCormick reports the Spartans “will develop the project in a public-private partnership (P3) with local firm Gillespie Group and Goldenrod Cos., a Nebraska-based developer that’s leading Iowa State’s CyTown project.” MSU will enter into a long-term ground lease with the Gillespie and Goldenrod joint venture, and McCormick notes the first phase of the project includes the arena, hotel and parking structures. The arena is expected to be operational by late 2027 with the hotel and parking structure slated to be ready by mid-2028. The second phase -- housing, office and retail -- would be operational by 2030, while the third phase, the future MSU academic or health care facility, is still TBD. Renderings inside. (link)

Legends is slated to announce promotions for Tim Statezni, Dan Jankoski, and Jay Lenhardt to create a three-person executive team following the departure of Legends College President Mike Behan, who is the new Chief Business and Revenue Officer for Hornets Sports & Entertainment. EVP/CRO Chad Estis tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “We aren’t backing off this space one bit. … We’re as focused on the college space as we’ve ever been. We see tons of opportunity here in the future, and we’re going to be firmly planted in it with a lot of resources.” Statezni will ascend to EVP of College, “functionally taking on Behan’s responsibilities” after serving as Legends’ SVP of Sales. Jankoski will take on an expanded role as SVP of College, and Lenhardt will receive a promotion to SVP of College Feasibility & Strategy. (link)

USC GM Chad Bowen joins Next Up with Adam Breneman to discuss how the role of a college football GM has evolved, what most fans and media don’t understand about NIL, and the pressure that comes with building not just a roster, but a culture. Bowen also explains that when balancing relationships with so many campus stakeholders, it’s important to be authentic. “Here’s the thing – recruits and families, they sniff out when you're not telling the truth, and I think if you're being authentic and real about the situation of what we're all being a part of, that's how winning is done.” Bowen adds that being transparent assures that families “know what they signed up for. They didn’t just sign up to come here because of a dollar amount. They didn't just come here to sign up for one person. They chose all the reasons.” Bowen acknowledges that he has yet to win a national championship but believes that to get there “everything should be under evaluation, including myself, every day because if you don’t view it that way, you don’t have that internal mindset that it could be taken away from you like that, you’re never going to win one anyway. I’ve said this over and over again, but there is not a day that will go by while I’m here at USC that I will waste it or I will take it for granted.” (link)

The NBA averaged 18,147 fans in attendance this past season, the second-highest total ever behind the 2023-24 campaign. SBJ’s David Broughton and Tom Friend also note that “for the second time in league history, total regular-season attendance exceeded 22.3M fans and regular-season average attendance exceeded 18,100 (the other instances were both during the 2023-24 regular season), [and] NBA arenas filled to a 97% capacity for the third time ever. Additionally, nearly two-thirds of regular-season games were sold out, and 10 teams sold out every game. The Heat and the Mavericks – which had the second-highest attendance leaguewide despite trading Luka Doncic – have the longest sellout streaks in the league, having sold out all of their home games for 13 consecutive seasons (minus pandemic-impacted seasons). The Celtics, the Warriors and the 76ers have sold out every game since the 2021-22 season. The Clippers, who this season left 20,000-seat Crytpo.com Arena for the 18,000-seat Intuit Dome, had the most precipitous attendance drop (-12.6%), going from 18,946 per game to 16,566.” (link)
