With five DIIs beginning their move to DI last year and Le Moyne making the same decision this year, Extra Points purveyor Brown ponders how these schools and others will know if they made the right decision at the right time to reclassify. While the risk calculus differs based on the current state of an institution, geography, fit, aspirations and more, Brown writes: “But given the costs and massive amount of uncertainty in the D-I model, nobody reclassifies just because they think they can compete for conference championships out of the gate.…this is a long-term play…one that probably can’t be fully evaluated for years. Which is worth keeping in mind, I think, for fans or anybody else that is clamoring for any particular school to move up. It isn’t just about who has enjoyed athletic success at D-II (or in rare cases, D-III), although having fan support and a winning athletic tradition certainly helps. It’s also about fundraising, about infrastructure, and about whether a reclassification even makes sense for that school’s institutional goals. There’s nothing wrong with being a very good D-II athletic department, after all.” (link) 

More on Le Moyne’s move to the NEC (DI) as Extra Points purveyor Brown notes: “There are a few other DII schools that I know of that are considering reclassification if the timing *and* conference invitations are right. Most of those schools are in the Southeast. Think ASUN/Big South/OVC/MEAC type schools.” (link)

B.C. Supreme Court Judge Stephens ruled against an injunction from Simon Fraser FB student-athletes, writing in part: “The Plaintiffs provide no previous case authority where a student has successfully established that an oral contract existed with a university that contractually committed the university to provide reasonable notice of the termination of a varsity sport program — despite the cost or risks to the university of running such a program, nor the potential impact on student athletes, including members of other varsity athletic programs of the university, during a notice period. […] This Court does not trivialize the hardship they feel from the cancellation of the football program and associated cancellation of the upcoming football season.” (link); SFU has tapped McLaren Global Sport Solutions SVP Copeland as  Special Advisor to examine the Red Leafs’ FB future. More details: “Mr. Copeland has deep knowledge of university sport operating structures and has provided leadership in complex football consulting projects, including for U Sports and the Canadian Football League. New Cal State San Bernardino AD Amer, on jumping into the Coyotes MBB HC search: “They’ve set a high bar and I think that’s a good pressure to have. Knowing how to maximize recruiting, how to stretch a dollar from a budget standpoint and being able to out-coach our opposition, that’s really going to be the key things that I’ll be looking for.” Amer also talks about his approach to facility upgrades, particularly those on the older end of the spectrum: “From my standpoint, it’s one of the beautiful things about college athletics is that while it’s a business, it’s a business with a soul, and so you have to look at the tradition of the facility because it’s important to strike a balance there. We don’t want to tear out the soul of it.” (link)

For the first time, the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships for DI, DII and DIII will all be held at the USTA’s National Tennis Campus in Lake Nona, and USTA CEO/Executive Director Sherr remarks: “It’s unique for the NCAA in any sport and a great way to put a spotlight on tennis and to bring something to Orlando that is unique in the world. We have the benefit of living in a city with several things that are unique in the world and were excited about creating a destination for collegiate tennis here.” USTA President/Board Chair and NCAA CMO Hainline adds that bringing all divisions together is “something tennis has done probably better than any other sport. You look at the U.S. Open and the other three Grand Slams and the 1,000 level events at the ATP and WTA, and it’s sort of a statement about sport and equal access. It’s wonderful to bring that to the collegiate level.” NCAA SVP of Championships Comstock says she could see Lake Nona being part of a rotation to host the event, adding: “I don’t see that it would be something we would do every year and the USTA will probably not want to undertake this every year, but we could certainly revisit this with potentially some kind of a schedule if our membership wanted to come down and do this on some kind of a schedule.” (link)
