Whomever is hired as Hawaii’s next athletic director could receive a base salary of at least $500K plus another $100K in incentives according to The Island News’ Duane Shimogawa. For context, former AD Craig Angelos’ salary was in the “mid $300Ks” per UH President Wendy Hensel, who adds: “If we want to secure a dynamic, experienced leader who can navigate this landscape, we must be prepared to offer a competitive package, and so we'll be having conversations about what that looks like and I want to ensure the board that we will both be fiscally efficient but also mindful of the importance that athletics play in the university as a whole and to the state.” Hensel expects to name a finalist to present to the board by mid-summer, if not sooner. UC Davis AD Rocko DeLuca’s contract extension through January of 2030 came with a signing bonus of $18K & with new base pay of $361K with annual 3% increases. DeLuca also has $30K worth of possible annual incentives, which include a $12.5K bonus for department fundraising of over $1.3M. If the institution wants to terminate the agreement, it would owe DeLuca 100% of the liquidated damages in year 1, a rate that decreases by 20% each year of the five-year deal. If DeLuca were to leave on his own accord for a gig in the Power 5, Big West, Mountain West or Big Sky, he’d owe a lump sum of $50K. All data per CollegeAD. (link)

Former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban and former NCAA Chief Medical Officer Brian Hainline join the Athletes OnBalance podcast to discuss the role of mental health in athlete development, treating mental wellness with the same urgency as physical injuries and developing a culture that promotes overall wellbeing. Hainline asserts that “we must understand that physical and mental health are inseparable. They’re intertwined at every level of our physiology. So we know with certainty, for example, that mental health disorders can predict physical injuries. We know disordered sleeping predicts a musculoskeletal injury more than overtraining does. We know that if you have an injury and in the recovery phase you become clinically depressed or develop an anxiety disorder, that’s going to prolong your recovery. … You can have a torn ACL and have perfectly reconstructed biomechanically ACL repaired, but if you develop a clinical depression postoperatively, that predicts that the ACL will not take. Just think about that.” Hainline adds that coaches are “data-driven,” so showing them this data has helped reshape the culture as it relates to addressing mental health. Lots more. (link)

In a Lawrence Journal-World article, Kansas Deputy AD for External Affairs and Revenue Generation Jason Booker says he likes KU’s odds of being selected as a base camp for the 2026 FIFA World Cup: “They love the university community and the assets that a college could bring for a base camp, meaning all the things that we do to help support our teams: laundry services, weight facilities, all those things you can think about.” Booker also reiterates that the end of the year, after the football season, “would still be the goal, for sure,” to start Phase II of the Booth Memorial Stadium renovations. Texas A&M fired an unnamed athletic department employee in January for impermissible sports wagering, which involved 172 wagers totaling $412.32, including two bets on Aggies sports. The Austin American-Statesman’s Brian Davis notes that at the start of the 2023-24 academic year, the SEC entered into a contract with US Integrity to utilize its ProhiBet monitoring program. ProhiBet notified Texas A&M officials on January 12 of an issue and the school notified the conference. From there, the NCAA compliance staff ruled the offense as a Level III violation. Since the person was no longer employed by A&M, no further action was necessary. The SEC accepted A&M’s actions and will not impose any additional penalties. Davis adds: “In March, the Austin American-Statesman reported that five University of Texas individuals were found to have made $14,885.76 in impermissible wagers from July 11 to Nov. 4, 2024. One football player was required to pay restitution to regain his eligibility, and another football athlete sought help from his parents for $9,600 in impermissible wagers while at UT.” (link)

Air Force has concluded an investigation into its Men’s Soccer program after eight cadet-athletes were suspended back in October in connection with “allegations of physical, unprofessional, and demeaning misconduct inflicted on other members of the team.” The Gazette’s Brent Briggeman indicates “unspecified disciplinary actions” have been handed down to some members of the team & Falcons AD Nathan Pine says his staff will work across the department to ensure “that all of our cadet-athletes and staff fully understand and embrace the clear lines between healthy teambuilding activities and unhealthy behaviors.” (link)

Calgary Flames prospect Henry Mews has announced he’s leaving the Sudbury Wolves of the OHL to play college hockey at Michigan, and The Daily Faceoff’s Jeff Marek expects several players to begin making the jump. “Expect to start hearing more and more about players leaving CHL to go play college hockey. Some big names, too. And while most of us have our eyes on Michigan, Michigan State, BU and other heavyweight programs, I’m told to watch Penn State, who this season gave their program a major shot in the arm making it to the Frozen Four. The term shared with me was ‘war chest’ when it comes to luring players. Penn State dearly would love to start graduating players into the NHL. This season was a major step.” (link)

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved an optional experimental video review coaches challenge rule that will go into effect for soccer this fall. Under the rule, coaches will have one video review challenge. If the challenge is successful, the coach will retain the right to challenge one more time for the rest of the match. The panel also approved the adoption of two rules that were put in place by the International Football Association Board in July. One will eliminate a straight red card being issued for nondeliberate handling of the ball in the penalty area that denies a goal or goal-scoring opportunity. Red cards will be reserved for “deliberate, cynical handling that denies a goal or goal-scoring opportunity.” The other change amends encroachment by teammates of the kicker or goalkeeper during a penalty kick and states that referees should penalize the encroachment “only if the player at fault prevents an opponent from playing the ball, challenges an opponent for the ball and then scores or prevents a goal, attempts to score or prevent a goal, or creates or stops a goal-scoring opportunity.” (link)

Here’s the latest from Netflix on its sports rights strategy in yesterday’s earnings call. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos: “...our live event strategy is unchanged, and we remain really focused on the big breakthrough events. Our audiences love them, and so anything, anything we chase, in the event space or the sports space, is a deal that has to make economic sense as well. [...] What we have seen with live is this very outsized positives around conversation and acquisition, and we suspect retention, and we’re really excited to keep building on that.” (link)

ESPN delivered its most-watched Nielsen Q1 in eight years, averaging 868K viewers during every minute of January, February and March across its primary network. Additionally, ESPN’s average-minute-audience was up 22% overall and 15% in the Persons 18-49 demo from Nielsen Q1 in 2024. Isolating primetime (8-11 p.m. ET), ESPN averaged 2.299M viewers on each of the 90 nights, its best within the Nielsen Q1 since 2012 and a 36% YoY increase. Combining all of ESPN’s programming with sports programming on ABC, fans consumed more of ESPN’s content (145.1B minutes) than any other Nielsen Q1 dating back 13 years (2012) and the totality was up 16% YoY. For the quarter, across all its Nielsen-rated networks, ESPN achieved 36% sports viewership, up from 33% in the same 2024 quarter. (link); Awful Announcing’s Matt Yoder points out the expanded College Football Playoff was a significant contributor to the uptick: “Instead of just having one game after the traditional bowl season, ESPN got an extra semifinal round after the new year and the championship game. It also probably helped that ratings juggernauts like Ohio State, Texas, Notre Dame, and Penn State were involved.” (link)

Athletics Admin consultant KC Smurthwaite reiterates his position that more schools will drop down from DI to DIII because “adding a $20M revenue-sharing bill to an athletic department’s budget is no small matter. Schools don’t have to contribute the full amount – but even a modest $2.5M payout has to come from somewhere. Combine that with the loss of walk-ons, and you’re facing a double whammy. Gone are the tuition, housing, and fees that walk-ons provided.” One administrator tells Smurthwaite they expect 50 fewer student-athletes next year after opting in. “We were always encouraged by the president’s office to bring on walk-ons—they filled dorms and paid tuition and fees.” That school estimates a loss of $19K per walk-on which, when multiplied by 50, means that school is taking a $1M hit. Meanwhile, an enrollment cliff is looming. As such, Smurthwaite observes that “college leaders and athletics administrators are now asking the hard questions: Who are we? What do we want to be? What are we trying to accomplish here? Those are valuable conversations—and necessary for institutional alignment. However, these factors also lead to some tough decisions, especially in smaller public and private schools.” (link)

The Trump administration is now threatening to revoke Harvard’s ability to enroll international students, a cohort that makes up at least 21% of the school’s student-athletes, according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit, Lev Akabas and Eben Novy-Williams. Specifically, the Department of Homeland Security announced Wednesday that it would cancel two federal grants to Harvard and demanded “detailed records” on what it described without specifics as “illegal and violent activities” by Harvard’s foreign student visa holders. Failure to comply, the department said, would result in the school losing a government-issued certification that allows it to enroll international students. Libit, et al. note that of the Crimson’s 919 student-athletes listed on public athletic rosters, 196 have hometowns outside the U.S. More than 50% of the athletes on the current women’s soccer, women’s golf and men’s heavyweight rowing squads are international. How many of those foreign athletes are on international visas and how many are U.S. citizens or green card holders is unclear. (link)

+ A New Jersey federal judge on Wednesday “grilled the NCAA about how it would be harmed if he granted a Rutgers football player's request to block the NCAA's five-year rule as it applies to him while he pursues an antitrust claim, pointing out the lack of clarity around the rule since the U. S. Supreme Court struck down restrictions on education benefits for athletes.” More on Law360. (link)
+ Oregon is suing former Football AC Carlos Locklyn for $400K, which UO claims is Locklyn’s buyout for decamping to Ohio State. Locklyn's agent claims the contract included a $200K buyout, which is the amount Ohio State provided. According to Football Scoop’s Zach Barnett, Locklyn mailed a $200K personal check to the Ducks last May, but the school returned the check in July, claiming it would not accept partial payments. UO argues Locklyn's contract dictated he pay 50% of his remaining salary through the full term of his contract, and that payment would be due within 60 days. With more than a full year now passed since Locklyn's departure, Oregon now says it's owed $400K plus 9% interest. Locklyn’s attorney, John Berg: “The University declined the [$200K] check, and now asserts an untenable interpretation of the agreement. We welcome the opportunity to present the facts to a judge and are confident the litigation will be resolved to Coach Locklyn’s satisfaction.” (link)

Our best wishes are with Florida State today after two people were killed and multiple people were injured by a gunman on campus. The deceased are not students, and FSU has reported that the suspect has been “neutralized” and the campus is secure, but it remains an active crime scene. As of this afternoon, six people were receiving medical attention at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare. One was in critical condition while five were listed in serious condition. FSU has announced that all athletics home events through Sunday, April 20, have been canceled, and further updates on events scheduled for next week will be communicated when available. (link, link)

CBS’ Matt Norlander observes that “five years ago, more than 4,400 Division I men's basketball players were legally and collectively paid a grand total of $0 in NIL earnings. That number is now promised to be in the hundreds of millions.” One high-major AC tells Norlander that he had been recruiting a mid-major player who wasn't even top-three on his team in scoring and offered the player north of $500,000 – “more than the coaching staff wanted, but bidding wars lead to some strange recruiting tributaries.” Instead, the player signed with another school for $1M, according to that coach. When Norlander checked with another coach to verify the story, he was told the player actually signed for $1.2M. The coach who lost out tells Norlander: “I could hear it in his voice, just how shocked he was by the amount of money they were promising him.” Norlander emphasizes: “This is a role player on a mid-major that failed to make the NCAA Tournament. He'll be paid at least $1M next season. That's one story. There are hundreds more.” Norlander cites a variety of sources who indicate the following schools are or likely will have $10M rosters next season: Arkansas, BYU, Duke, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan, North Carolina, St. John’s and Texas Tech. Another group that can go up to $8M if required includes Auburn, Connecticut, Florida, Houston, Kansas, Kansas State, Miami, Purdue, Tennessee, Texas, UCLA, USC, Villanova and Virginia. More. (link)

Florida, with the help of the Florida Victorious collective, earned between $1M and $1.5M during the week of the Final Four alone, according to Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich, who adds: “On Sunday, after the Gators secured the title game berth, three donors set up a $250K match before the championship tipped off. They got all the way up to $325K. … Then Florida alum Gary Condron offered $1M for the men’s basketball program in the hopes it would inspire other fans to follow.” Florida Victorious CEO Erick Reasoner estimates the richest collectives in the SEC were offering about $6M total for their basketball programs and tells Christovich that’s “no longer a big number for a lot of schools. … With rev-share kicking in, and non-football schools having rev-share, that’s completely changed basketball rosters.” The puzzle for collectives to solve now is ensuring commercial NIL deals are approved by the clearinghouse. To solve it, Florida Victorious plans to focus more on membership-driven products, such as access to exclusive social content, like interviews with players, or invitations to in-person events. Reasoner: “That’s the tough part—can you supplement the rev-share with what passes the fair-market value test. I think schools are still figuring that out.” (link)

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved modifications to the injury timeout rules in football, beginning with the 2025-26 season. Under the new rule, if medical personnel enter the field to evaluate an injured player after the ball is spotted for the next play, that player's team will be charged a timeout. If the team does not have any timeouts remaining, a 5-yard delay-of-game penalty will be assessed. The panel also approved a rule change regarding overtime timeouts whereby if a game reaches a third overtime, each team will have one timeout beginning with the third overtime until a winner is determined. Other rule changes include: When the decision on instant replay is announced, the referee will only say that the call on the field is "upheld" or "overturned." The terms "confirmed" and "stands" will not be used. Additionally, If any player on a kickoff-return team makes a "T" signal with his arms during the kick, the team gives up the right to return the kick, and the play will be whistled dead. After the two-minute timeout in either half, if the defense commits a foul with 12 or more players on the field and all the players participate in the play, the officials will administer a 5-yard penalty. The offensive team would have the option to reset the game clock back to the time at the start of the play. If the 12th player is attempting to leave the field and has no influence on the play, the defensive team will be penalized 5 yards with no adjustment to the game clock. Full rundown. (link)

+ The price of an arena being constructed in downtown Kalamazoo that will serve as home to the Western Michigan hockey team has increased by $215M and will now cost $515M. Broncos HC Pat Ferschweiler tells ESPN’s Pat McAfee that “one guy is going to build it and donate it to the university. He said, ‘Coach, I want you to think big.’ I said, ‘I’m your guy, let’s go.’ So I’ve added over $100M to that building myself. Every possible amenity you could ever have. He said, ‘I want it to be the best arena in college hockey and I want it to be the best performance center [and] gym in college hockey, and I think we're going to have both. We're going to give the players everything they could possibly want for success. … They haven’t said no to me in two years. This is an arena built with an imagination and not a budget.” (link)
+ A new master plan for the Greenville Arena District was unveiled today, per SBJ’s Bret McCormick, who notes a “6,500-seat amphitheater will be built in the 12-acre site that includes Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Also included in the plan is a renovation (the cost hasn’t been determined yet) of the 25-year-old arena in upstate South Carolina that’s home to the ECHL Swamp Rabbits and annually hosts roughly 130 ticketed events. The venue is set to welcome the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament action in 2026 for the fourth time, and regularly hosts the SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament (its current hosting deal runs through 2028) and NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament rounds.” Gensler, LSP3 and LMN Architects are working jointly on the project. + Memphis has finalized a new lease agreement with the Memphis Grizzlies to continue playing in FedExForum. Attendance-based guaranteed payments are no longer part of the deal for now, according to the Commercial Appeal’s Jason Munz, who reports that for the 2025-26 season, the Grizzlies will pay the university a lump sum of $250K “for all Club Box seat tickets…for university events.” Under the terms of the previous deal, “no money changed hands for those tickets.” Additionally, the Tigers’ proceeds from the gross sale of merchandise increases from 22.5% to 30%, and the minimum number of home games Memphis must play is reduced from 17 to 16.
