Florida State Athletics & Legends responded to the tragedy on campus late last week by serving hundreds of meals to students just hours after the incident. Seminoles AD Michael Alford: “It's such a tight-knit community, such a great family. That's what FSU is. That's what separates us from everybody else. And we're one. We're going to reach out. We have that unconquered spirit, and we're going to do everything we can to make sure that our students are taken care of. [...] We're family ... You come to school here, you walk this campus. It's different. It's got a different feeling. The people are just different. Everyone supports one another, student athletes support and do things on campus, and different clubs. Same as our students who come and support our student athletes and come to our events. It's just a special campus to walk around and see how happy everyone is all the time. And for this tragic event to happen, anything we can do to give back, to have a hot meal and feel safe, we're going to do that.” (link)

More from Athletes.org Co-Founder Jim Cavale as he talks about AO’s role in the industry moving forward. Cavale says of the potential of an antitrust exemption through Congress: “They’re not going to get it. Is anything really going to pass right now from Congress? It could be a bill for world peace from the Republicans, seven Democrats in the Senate ain’t voting for it.” Absent that, Cavale notes that collective bargaining is the only remaining option to set rules without getting sued. “I think there’s a fear of employment happening, which is one big fear. Another fear is it’s giving up a little bit of power and doing things collaboratively with the athletes instead of on an island. I think the political fear of what's my governor going to say, how’s my president going to feel about this? But at some point something’s got to give and I think this Nico [Iamaleava] situation is foreshadowing many, many more like it.” Full interview. (link)

Colorado announces plans to add a statue for former Football HC Bill McCartney outside of Folsom Field. More: “A project two full years in the making, the statue will stand 8.5 feet tall in total and consist of a bronze statue on a granite base. It is designed by Brian Hanlon of Hanlon Sculpture Studios, who also designed the statue of Ralphie and her handlers that stands outside the UC Health Champions Center. It'll be just the second statue outside Folsom Field in its 101-year history, joining a bust of the stadium's namesake, Fred Folsom, which adorns the stadium's south side.” (link)

Nebraska plans to hold a special spring scrimmage for players who will not make the 105-man roster, and Huskers HC Matt Rhule explains: "We have some guys that will be playing their last time in that stadium. We have some guys that are battling to make that 105. I have a bunch of guys that, if they can't play here, they need some tape to go somewhere else, so I've waited until after the portal closed on that Saturday. The portal closes on Friday, so it won't affect it. The guys that are cemented in their spots, they're not going to play. Some other guys might ask to play, or not, but those guys that are battling – some of them are twos but want to prove that they're a one - we have a bunch of those guys. So I'm going to put the ball down a little bit and we're going to play some live football. … I just decided, when [the NCAA] decided it was going to be 105. I owe it to those kids to give them one last chance to go out there and put some stuff on tape. Then, if they're not going to make it, we'll send that tape to all the schools they want, and they'll have more tape to send out, but I hope our fans come out and watch those kids." (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner offers a solution to football’s competition calendar, starting with “eliminating the month-long spring practice sessions entirely. Instead, the NCAA should follow the NFL model and conduct a series of Organized Team Activities (OTAs), which are essentially practices without contact. Let the schools hold multi-day OTAs in both March and April with the flexibility to have joint practices against opposing teams. Give the players a break in May, then allow a week-long OTA session in June with partial contact (i.e., helmets and shoulder pads). That should prepare the players physically for the next stage in the calendar overhaul: Start training camp in late July, instead of early August, and cut the duration from four weeks to three.” By doing so, the regular season could start on what is now Week 0 and conference championships could be held in late November; however, Wilner acknowledges that “wouldn’t create enough space to roll the national title back to Jan. 1. Either a second week must be cut or the postseason schedule needs to be condensed. (Last season, the CFP spanned 32 days, from Dec. 20-Jan. 20.) It’s tricky, and there’s a far better chance the sport is unable to move the title game all the way to Jan. 1. But even the second week in January would be preferable to finishing in the second half of the month. The NFL is expected to eventually expand the regular season to 18 games, which would create more ratings competition — and fewer broadcast windows — for the current version of the CFP. Far better to avoid the gorilla than stand in its way.” (link)

Have any NFL teams asked Miami (FL) QB Cam Ward about opting out of the second half of the Pop-Tarts Bowl against Iowa State? “No discussion at all. At the end of the day, it’s March; the bowl game was in December. At some point, you’ve got to move on. I’ve never lived my life in the past.” The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman wonders if the stigma surrounding bowl opt-outs has subsided, and Houston Texans HC DeMeco Ryans remarks: “Each player has his right to opt out or do whatever he wants to do. We’ll evaluate the full process. I don’t think it comes down to one particular game. When we are evaluating guys here at the combine, our scouts, they’ve been watching these guys since they were freshmen. So, we have a lot of history with these guys, not just one decision of a guy opting out.” Seattle Seahawks GM John Schneider adds: “They’re all evaluated on an individual basis. Every circumstance is different. It depends on what’s going on with the player at the school. Where he is medically, it’s just part of the evaluation process, good or bad.” (link)

SBJ’s Bret McCormick examines how the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Cavs Rewards loyalty program works and explains that Cavs Rewards is “novel for using Uptop’s credit/debit card-linking tech to expand the program’s reach beyond the geographical barriers that have limited these programs in the past. Fans add their preferred plastic to their Cavs Rewards profile and accumulate rewards points from any spending on that credit or debit card inside Rocket Arena or at Cavs Rewards partner locations out in the world. Additionally, if Cavs Rewards members buy a team partner product, like a Michelob Ultra at a random bar, they can upload their purchase receipt and still get rewards points.” Launched earlier this year, the program already has 18K account holders, including 4K who signed up when the Cavs clinched a spot in the playoffs. Further, more than 3M transactions have been captured, and the program has already grown the team’s fan database by 50%. Cavs VP/Digital Products Georgia Sapounas tells McCormick: “Not just gamified. Not just gimmicky. Much more tangible rewards, whether you’re local or live somewhere else in the country. It’s really taking it to the next level.” Outside the Cavs’ organization, McCormick points out that “thanks to the card-linking, sponsors get more specific data than they have in the past, based on anonymized data that shows spending with partner brands and locations, as well as a lift in visitors to their stores. One of the rewards partner locations has seen a more than 50% lift in visits per Cavs Reward fan compared to before the fan joined the Cavs Rewards program. Another specific partner’s location has seen the equivalent of roughly $150K in spending related to Cavs Rewards.” Sapounas: “We’ve already seen significant six-figure revenue via partnership integrations, and there is a path to reach seven figures in the next year.” (link)

Athletes.org Co-Founder Jim Cavale talks about AO’s role in the industry moving forward and points out that “right-to-work states, which most of the Southern states are, are anti-unionization in a lot of ways and have laws that don't allow it. And who does the president work for at a public institution? They work for the governor basically. So, it’s very polarizing that at the presidential level and at the state government level can be looked at as, ‘No, we're not doing anything with unionization. The problem is the analogy in their head that they're using is the UAW. The analogy in their head that they should be using is the NFLPA, who has a partnership that ‘s not adversarial. The players, the NFLPA, the NFL have a partnership in the greatest business in sports, so we need more of the leaders at the presidential level of the school and the state government level to understand that unionization in sports…is a solution. When you go down to the commissioner and AD level, you have to have a little bit of empathy for them because they really don’t make decisions on their own. Who does the commissioner of a conference report to? The presidents. … So we do need commissioners and ADs to step up. Somebody’s got to lead. Leadership is hard. It takes conviction in your own beliefs, it takes a willingness to cast a vision that may get a lot of pushback, but also a belief in that vision to pursue it all the way to the end.” More. (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork tells The Lantern he wants to launch a campaign to build a new ice rink for both Hockey programs: “Get the funding plan launched, get our capital campaign launched, we’re having conversations with donors, but until we have a real true pathway, you can’t really have a true conversation and expect a commitment. So, we need the outline by this summer, and that will allow us to press the pedal and try to get this thing off the ground.” As for upgrades to the Schottenstein Center: “We have a lot of things in motion. We need to make Ohio State basketball ‘cool’ if you will. For students, for recruits, for our fans; so we’re working on a lot of things regarding game-day atmosphere.” Bjork also continues to push for a revamp of the college football calendar: “If we ever want to get back to an academic nexus in this conversation - which we all say we do, we believe in that - we need to move the portal windows to the spring at the end of the academic year.” (link)

AD Advisors & Timark have published a study that analyzed every single Men’s Basketball transfer back to 2019 (14,000+ moves). Here are some of the core findings: “Approximately 65% of all the Division I basketball-playing student-athletes who entered the transfer portal, regardless of the competition level their career began at, either transferred down a level or did not find a new home. At the highest competition level in this study (Tier 1), the Power 4 conferences and the Big East, 70% of student-athletes who entered the portal transferred down or did not find a new home. At the lowest competition level in this study (Tier 3), which was the majority of DI programs, 61% of student-athletes who entered the portal transferred down or did not find a new home. For those student-athletes, the only down transfer destinations are programs outside of Division I. Additionally, the most common outcome for Tier 1 student-athletes who entered the portal and remained in Tier 1 was intra-conference destinations. Further, the majority of these portal entrants still transferred to a lower-ranked team.” Tons more. (link)

Oregon Football HC Dan Lanning discusses the Ducks’ success in the transfer portal and tells Sports Illustrated’s Bri Amaranthus that “I think one, this place has been a place that's really open and honest and provides opportunities. I'm really proud going into year four as the head coach here, we haven't lost a starter to the transfer portal. I think that speaks volumes about what's the experience for our players. They really enjoy being here. They feel like they're getting developed and they're taken care of. … In a landscape where you can take care of players, that's what we want to be. I don't want to get anybody at a discount. I don't want to say, 'Oh you came here and worked for cheap.' If they do a great job, they deserve to reap the benefits of that. They're the ones filling the stands. And we've been able to be competitive from that environment. We're probably not always the highest bidder. In fact, I know we aren't. But I know that we're able to be competitive and fair with our players and create great opportunities for them.” Lanning goes on to explain that “I always feel like being honest and transparent is key to having success. And sometimes it's not always the message somebody wants to hear, but if they hear the truth and they know you're telling the truth, then they can lean in on that. And we've had a lot of success being honest with our players.” (link)

The latest murmurs from inside Men’s Basketball comes from Fox Sports’ John Fanta as one “high major coach” tells him: “This is an absolute cesspool. It's birthed by the far-too-long original sin of NCAA greed. The adults in the room gave NIL with no guidelines. No guidance. No rules. Imagine the NBA with annual unrestricted free agency, and no salary cap. And now imagine asking a team full of players earning six figures to go to class.” Another, this one from the mid-major ranks: “This is a Grade-A f------ goat rodeo. I need to pray the rosary to get through the offseason.” One more perspective, this from a “high major” HC: “It's challenging, but it's still an amazing sport. I hate when coaches complain because we chose this life, but there are obvious changes that need to happen to grow our game and increase its popularity outside of March Madness. Hopefully the NCAA, conferences and the powers that be can move swiftly to improve the overall product from NIL to some rule changes (less video review, quarters, etc.) that I believe would help.” (link)

More from former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban and former NCAA Chief Medical Officer Brian Hainline on the Athletes OnBalance podcast. Saban points out that players are also noticing that taking care of their mental health improves performance and are increasingly willing to work with professionals to that end. “More people were willing to say, ‘I don’t see this as somebody looking at me like I’ve got something wrong with me.’ They looked at it like ‘This is an opportunity for me to develop if I use these resources.’ So, that culture piece is really, really important because people have a hard time admitting ‘I have a problem here. I need to improve.’ That’s a tough hurdle for some folks to get over.” Saban also talks about being an early advocate of rethinking two-a-day practices while he was at LSU: “We had 33 guys need IVs during the first two-a-day. So, I said we can’t have two-a-days, it’s too hot here in August.” After consulting with doctors, Saban was told that what was important was ensuring that players had two opportunities to hydrate and eat between practices. “So if you practiced in the morning, at night, the next afternoon you would accomplish that because you’re creating a greater space between practices." The NCAA, however, forbade Saban’s team from doing that, so the Tigers only practiced 26 times rather than 29 before their first games for several years. Lots more. (link)

"Athletics has always been a profound part of my life. … It taught me the value of teamwork, it taught me how to work well with others to get to a common goal and it also challenged me and pushed me." That's Fairfield Senior Assoc. AD for Compliance & Governance Sara Richwine on the latest episode of The Career Hustle, where she reflects on her experience as a multi-sport student-athlete at Muhlenberg College (DIII) and how athletics was always at the core of her trajectory. Richwine and Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz also discuss developing core values, assessing career opportunities, the importance of critical thinking for compliance administrators and more, including the differences between DI, II and III and the common threads that transcend divisional models. When assessing career opportunities, Richwine explains she determines whether the institution’s core values align with her own, how the athletic department positively contributes to campus and the community and how long coaches stay. “Sometimes really high turnover can be a red flag, so I take a look at that and also when I go on interviews, how are coaches and student-athletes and staff talking about the university, talking about the people in charge? … And then when I take a look at the job itself, is it a good fit for my skill set? Will this position challenge me? And then most importantly, will it help me to grow and develop in my career and do I feel like I can make an impact here?” Lots more in the full interview on Connect.
