North Carolina took home the school's first NCAA title in women's tennis yesterday, beating ACC rival NC State, 4-1. It marked the 49th NCAA championship for the Tar Heels and the 36th by a UNC women's team. (link)

Nebraska President Carter talks to the Omaha World-Herald’s Shatel about potential further Big Ten expansion & the overall Power 5 landscape: “For our league to have national exposure in four time zones is fantastic. How big should it be? I don’t have the answer to that. Do we need four more Pac-12 teams that want to join? Time is going to tell. [...] I think the ACC has some work to do. Make sure they understand what their media rights are, what the penalties are. You’re talking $110 million to walk out the door. That’s a big price tag. I think we have another year or two of the status quo, with a few minor changes. But I think over the next year there’s going to be a lot of big changes that are going to happen.” (link)

The LA Times’ Plaschke questions USC President Folt’s interpretation of the word “integrity,” which she used to describe then-incoming Trojans AD Bohn in 2019. Fast forward to 2023 and Plaschke points to a number of articles his publication was working on about Bohn, including one that “recounted concerns about his conduct in his previous job at Cincinnati, citing six sources both named and anonymous who said he made unwanted physical contact with women while creating a toxic and hostile work environment.” More from Plaschke: “When asked Saturday whether Bohn was properly scrutinized before he was hired, a source close to Bohn’s search maintained that the university conducted a thorough vetting process. This all comes back to Folt. This is her account. This is her responsibility. This is her mess and right now, she must swim in it.” (link)

Staying in the Pac-12, the San Jose Mercury News’ Wilner writes on the $50M haul former Commissioner Scott took home from the league over the course of his 13-year tenure. Wilner points the finger: “...let’s not blame Scott for the egregious sum collected over the course of 13 years. Nope. Nobody would turn down that cash if offered. He’s no fool. Instead, fault lies entirely with his bosses, the university presidents. They negotiated his contract, installed him as chief executive of a media company, signed him to multiple extensions, allowed the Pac-12 Networks to operate without the proper checks and balances, then handed him that glorious severance package. [...] The presidents have botched this in every meaningful way over the years, from Scott’s compensation to the basketball games in China to the Pac-12 Networks strategy on down the list. And always, the athletic departments are left paying the price and bearing the burden.” More. (link)

LSU President Tate in a retweet of news that former Iowa women’s basketball student-athlete Czinano had been waived despite being the 26th pick in last month’s WNBA Draft, wrote: “Remained quiet when my students were released. No claim of sour grapes here…but the WNBA business model is suboptimal. Players are better served in college or with other transparent options to aspire. I hope this market learns to tap into the passion of college WBB.” Recent LSU players Williams and Morris were also recently released after going in the second round of the draft. (link)

Our partnership with Connect gives Air Force the ability to identify and proactively engage the very best professionals within our industry and continually improve our athletics department.” (link)

Louisville Baseball HC McDonnell after missing out on the postseason, a rarity for McDonnell’s tenure in the Derby City: “I always expect to be here. But I'm not going to shy away from (his recent concerns about facilities). I've been very vocal. Right? The past few years. … I'm not going to get into it now but I've been very vocal and challenging over the last 12 months. Just look at the writing on the wall. Look at where this program has been and you walk around. You walk through the dugouts. You walk under the stadium. You see what differently have we done since 2000-whatever. So, it's, you know, we want to be here. We love it here. But, again, I want to work for people and be with people and in a group that want to win as well. And don't tell me you want to win. Show me you want to win. That's all I asked for, and I think our fans asked for that. I think our players asked for that. I've been recruiting these kids. They've been committed since their eighth-, ninth-, 10th-grade year. Well, they showed up on campus they haven't seen a whole lot different. They said it was going be different. We promised them it would be different, but it's not different." (link)

Wisconsin Women’s Rowing HC Bryans, who resigned this week after 19 years leading the Badgers, explains: “I’m proud of what I’ve done. And I’m proud of what the team has been able to accomplish and build. The staff has been remarkable, everybody that I’ve been able to work with. And it’s time for new leadership. … I’m at peace with what we did this year, even though it wasn’t as fast as we’d hoped to go. The team was unified and they did a great job. So this was just the right time. … It’s been a lot of years of doing one thing. I always say that for the freshmen, it’s the hardest thing they have to do, be a freshman in college. Because it’s the biggest change in their whole lives. And so maybe I’m going to test that theory. We’ll see.” (link)

With Michigan Football’s Assistant Director of Recruiting Schembechler - son of legendary Wolverines HC of the same name - resigning a few days after he was hired due to some prior controversial social media posts and interactions, the Wolverines have released a statement: “Effective this afternoon, Shemy Schembechler has resigned his position with Michigan Football. We are aware of some comments and likes on social media that have caused concern and pain for individuals in our community. Michigan Athletics is fully committed to a place where our coaches, staff and student-athletes feel welcome and where fully support the University's and Athletic Department's commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.” (link)

Former Duke AD & current Huron Consulting leader White told Toledo athletics officials at a retreat last week they all need to “become good storytellers” as he believes the past year’s athletics successes for the Rockets have been underreported. The Toledo Blade’s Briggs argues leveraging athletics success could be one key strategy to fight the school’s enrollment decline, which is down 32% since 2010. Briggs: “Truth remains, the best way to promote your school, engage alumni, and elevate campus spirit is through that most quintessential of university ideals: beating the hell out of another institution’s football team. And that translates to student recruitment and retention.” Rockets AD Blair: “I call it Midwest humility. I don't want to be terribly braggadocios, but I also want to tell the story of all the great things going on at this university. We've got tremendous coaches, tremendous young people, a tremendous campus. We’ve got to start telling about ourselves.” (link)

Las Vegas continues to grow as a sports epicenter, potentially making it harder for UNLV to cut through the clutter. Rebels Senior Assoc. AD for Marketing & Fan Engagement Canal: “UNLV is an incredibly unique school, not only in this market, but I would say in this industry. There’s nothing else like UNLV. You can’t take a conventional approach to marketing our programs. You have to be creative. You have to be innovative. You have to do different things while also not ignoring the simple things that do work.” Canal also believes there's room for fandom to support all teams in the city: “They’re doing their thing (pro sports), and we’re doing ours. They’re completely different products, although we’re all in the same kind of sports market. We just offer something different, and that’s what makes it special.” More. (link)

What can the sports industry learn about leveraging primary & secondary ticket markets for the high-profile Taylor Swift tour? The face value of non-VIP tickets ranged from $49 to $499 (plus fees), but resale prices ranged from $1,000 to $8,000 (plus fees). Axios’ Primack: “Swift herself could have limited the price gouging, but didn’t.” During the sale process last fall, Swift used Ticketmaster’s “Verified Fan” tool to reduce the number of tickets purchased by brokers, but she did not opt to use Ticketmaster’s “Face Value Ticket Exchange” (FVTE) option, which would have prevented brokers and others from reselling tickets for more than face value. One issue, however, with FVTE, is that six states outlaw its use. More from Primack. (link)

The LA Times’ Kartje with additional reporting around the departure of USC AD Bohn: “Bohn made inappropriate comments about the physical appearance of female colleagues, including remarks about their dress, hair and weight, that staff members said made them feel uncomfortable, according to two USC sources with knowledge of the incidents. They spoke on condition of anonymity fearing retaliation. They said Bohn’s comments left colleagues — especially women — feeling awkward. Three USC sources said several people confronted Bohn about comments they felt were inappropriate, but they continued.” More. (link)

The Athletic’s Mandel notes the immediate leadership challenge for USC: “(Trojans President) Folt now faces immense pressure to hire a rock-solid new athletics director — something USC has failed to do in at least 30 years — because the school is embarking on the most consequential athletics moment in its modern history. There’s no understanding of the enormity of the school’s Big Ten move, one filled with a million logistical challenges and extreme competitive risks. Plenty of schools have changed conferences through the years, but no Power 5 program with national championship aspirations has up and moved to a league headquartered 2,000 miles to the east. Hiring the right leader to oversee those efforts will be essential.” (link)

ESPN’s Hale pens a lengthy Twitter thread summing up the ACC’s current status vis-a-vis revenue and submits there are five options moving forward: 1) everyone waits until 2036-ish; 2) Notre Dame joins or other expansion; 3) ESPN renegotiates; 4) The league is dissolved; or, 5) Schools fight the grant-of-rights in court. Hale goes on to parse why, exactly, the money is so important, and aside from the obvious, he points out the “courts could soon erase the middle man & determine athletes are employees w/salaries from schools. That'd be the end for the ACC, which is why Phillips was in DC lobbying Congress to nix employee convo & halt future litigation. That's not likely though. It's more than buying the best players though. Multiple ADs have suggested the perception of a ‘Power 2’ could make recruiting outside the SEC/B1G impossible. Just look how much (AAC Commissioner) Aresco has put into fighting the P5 label. Phillips acknowledged it's already a concern.” With it being unlikely Notre Dame will ever become a full member, Hale reports the ACC has looked at potentially adding Washington, Oregon, West Virginia and SMU, and “from what I’m told the $$ just aren’t there.” Fighting the GOR in court, Hale concludes, is the “only remotely likely outcome,” albeit a last resort. In sum, though, Hale contends: “The bottom line here is there is ZERO incentive -- NONE, NADA, ZERO -- for any ACC schools to make someone else's path to more money easier by leaving for the Big 12 or any other non-SEC/B1G school. And also, the schools left behind would sue, sue, sue.” Lots more. (link)

Sportico’s McCann breaks down the Ivy League’s defense in its motion to dismiss an antitrust lawsuit regarding the conference’s decision not to award athletic scholarships. Ivy student-athletes, the league argues, are subject to the same academic standards and the same opportunities to address economic need as their classmates. Further, the schools assert that conferences are afforded autonomy to design rules as they see fit, and prospective students have the ability to attend colleges in other conferences. The league argues: “Some student-athletes considering a school in the Ivy League might choose instead a full athletic scholarship from UVA, Michigan, Cal, UCLA, Duke, North Carolina, Stanford, Georgetown, Rice, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt” or other non-Ivy schools that are likewise academically prestigious with major DI athletic programs. Furthermore, the Ivy League cites the Alston case, in which the district court issued an injunction permitting “any NCAA member conference” to limit education-related compensation or benefits for athletes. More from McCann. (link)

The University of California has settled the discrimination lawsuit filed against UC Santa Barbara by former Softball HC Galicinao and AC Hendricks. Galicinao presented her findings, coined “Operation Close the Gap,” to then-interim AD Barsky and then-Assoc. AD for Fan Services, Ticketing and Sponsorship Sales/Softball sport administrator Cornet in March 2022, in which she outlined the “glaring inequities” between the compensation for coaches of men’s and women’s teams. Specifically, in 2020, she noted that her salary was $86,761 while UCSB Baseball HC Checketts made $221,197. Galiciano said there were no follow-ups to her presentation, but instead, after she notified the school of her intent to sue, she was terminated. Both Galicinao and Hendricks accused the university of retaliation in addition to their discrimination and equal pay claims. (link)

Arizona State AD Anderson knows Desert Financial Arena is in need of some love: “It’s a tired arena. Maybe minimally functional but it's not a very exciting venue. That has been a constant item for me to address since I have been here and we continue to look at that where, for competitive purposes, recruiting, we have to make some upgrades. Equally important for the aesthetics and quite frankly, the safety of the place. I’m an attorney by trade. I used to do litigation. I know risk management and so I know liability threats.” Key needs: handrails on steps throughout the facility, a new sound system, food & beverage upgrades, advertising opportunities. Anderson runs through the challenges of building a new venue, also adds about a solution: “It is a priority for me personally. We have to address it in a very short order. For competitive purposes, fan experience overall and a big part of that is the safety factor.” (link)

The Athletic’s Auerbach wonders “How did the Duke and Clemson softball teams get this good this quickly?” The Blue Devils are in their sixth season of competition, while the Tigers are in their fourth and both programs are seeded in the NCAA Tournament this year. Auerbach: “These two programs are young yet wildly successful, emblematic of a growing sport that has rewarded investment. Both schools needed to add a women’s sport to comply with Title IX, and both chose softball because they believed it could succeed.” Clemson sold out of season tickets for its inaugural season in a week and the school is already looking at expanding the stadium by 600+ seats with revenue triple what was projected, according to AD Neff. For her part, Duke AD King, who has worked with the softball program since its inception, recalls the importance of the hiring process, and how finding a leader who could both pause their career - at least, the day-to-day coaching and game prep part - to build a program from scratch but also handle potential losses in the early years. On HC Young, King observes: “We were thinking about who was going to come in and be ready to handle slow progress because it’s a build. But, wow. She’s been amazing. … I have to stop saying it’s a program she’s building. Because she’s built it.” More. (link)

The Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Rules Committee has proposed a clearer definition of what should be considered a bona fide competition in the sport. The committee members recommended eliminating non-collegiate athletes from participating in an official program of collegiate meets. However, those athletes would be allowed to compete in exhibition events conducted outside the meet program. For team diving competitions, the committee recommends each team consist of three divers from the same school; each diver would complete one-third of the prescribed list of six dives/two dives at any level; the team would complete one dive for every group; and several other criteria. Additionally, the committee approved an experimental rule for next season that allows coaches to review video after the 30-minute protest time expires. Other proposals include an optional rule to allow the use of underwater cameras for video review to confirm disqualification for swimming infractions; allowing the use of tape, kinesiology tape and compression sleeves to treat documented medical conditions; and deciding ties based on methods other than a swim-off, such as a coin toss, if agreed upon by both coaches. Full update. (link)
