Utah State AD Diana Sabau confirms she was aware that the four schools who first departed for the Pac-12 would do so a month before the announcement was made and adds: "I was really worried last summer in August, when they started talking about the first four that were going to be invited to the pack. And I was like, ‘Oh my God, I've done 18 presentations, I've talked to all these people.’ And then it started to fall into place. And people said, ‘Well, be patient. You're not going to be part of the first group, but you're going to be asked.’ ... Then the Mountain West came to everybody and said, 'We need you to sign this MOU and we're going to pay Air Force and UNLV $10M and everybody else is just going to be $2M. And I was like, hold on, Utah State, we went to the second round, we got everybody in the Mountain West units for going to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with Danny Sprinkle a year ago, and we're only going to get two? I don't want to be put in a corner. I don't want Utah State to be put in a corner. So, then we just got really aggressive, and it just went from there." (link)

The Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty shares more of Stanford Men’s Basketball HC Kyle Smith’s remarks about a potential relegation and promotion system in the ACC. Smith noted earlier this month in San Antonio that “the ACC, we’re struggling for a place in the marketplace. We need to be the first ones to do something like this. The big boys, the SEC and Big Ten, are trying to take over. Put some pressure on them and the Big 12, too. This is the ACC! The ACC is basketball. So you come out and say: ‘We’re going to relegate teams to raise excitement and get back on top.’ … We might need to think of a better word than relegation. You know, it could sting. But that’s what it would be! Relegation! And if we try it and it doesn’t work, what’s the worst case? We get four teams in the tournament? That just happened.” Smith has yet to workshop the idea with other league HCs but acknowledges that Duke and North Carolina are unlikely to embrace a relegation system. His counter is that if they lost enough conference games to be in danger of relegation, “then you’re probably on a pretty hot seat anyway.” (link)

Rutgers football student-athlete Jett Elad and HC Greg Schiano testified this week that they believed Elad would be eligible to play this season based on the ruling that granted Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia another season of eligibility. The NCAA’s rejection of Elad and Rutgers’ waiver request “would deprive Elad of a chance to play for ‘the coach of his dreams’ while earning a ‘half-million dollar contract,’” according to Elad’s attorney. The value of the NIL deal, which was revealed by the defense during their cross-examination of Elad, is roughly $650K, including a base of $550K and a $100K incentive to finish as a first-team All-Big Ten selection.” Schiano testified that the Scarlet Knights recruited Elad because he provided “great value at a position of need” and had “multi-positional value.” The price they reached for his NIL deal was based on what Rutgers’ “NIL people” believed to be his value on the transfer market, Schiano added. NCAA lead attorney Kenneth Racowski argued that the repercussions of this case will “impact the landscape of college football.” He added there “has to be a line somewhere” when it comes to eligibility. UTEP will discontinue its Women’s Tennis program “effective immediately.” Miners AD Jim Senter: “We made this decision following a thoughtful analysis and with a heavy heart.” Under the FAQ section on “Why tennis & why now?”: “UTEP does not have an on-campus tennis facility. Building a viable tennis facility would be cost prohibitive, and a more extensive donor base would be required to raise sufficient funding. Discontinuing tennis will enable the reallocation of resources to other sports programs as UTEP prepares for upcoming changes to college athletics, including revenue sharing and roster caps.” (link)

Penn is in discussions about the possible formation of an NIL collective, according to the Daily Pennsylvanian’s Sean McKeown and Walker Carnathan, who report: “One source close to the matter reported a conversation in which a Penn men’s basketball coach told an athlete that some players would be paid through a collective in the near future. Another source claimed that a collective has already been in use but that the measure is currently paused. … One of the sources said that the collective would only be designed for select players within Penn’s athletic programs. Multiple sources indicated that Penn has begun introductory talks regarding a collective, with one specifying that Penn was awaiting approval from the Ivy League.” Furthermore, “one source indicated that Penn’s efforts were driven by alumni in an effort to retain top talent and maintain national competitiveness.” (link)

The Athletic’s Sam Khan chronicles the evolution of the GM role and traces its roots back to 2006 when former Georgia Tech HC Geoff Collins, then on the Western Carolina staff, agreed to join the Yellow Jackets’ staff under then-HC Chan Gailey as Director of High School Relations. Collins agreed but wanted to change the job's title. Collins recalls Gailey’s response: “I don’t care what you call yourself, I just want you to come here and help us recruit.” Collins, after a conversation with now-Nebraska HC Matt Rhule, eventually landed on the title Director of Player Personnel, a precursor to today’s GM. Khan notes that former LSU HC Ed Orgeron had a more refined vision for the GM role when he hired Austin Thomas to fill it. Thomas, who now serves as the Tigers’ Senior Assoc. AD for Football Administration, tells Khan: “Coach O had a vision for understanding how big the college football world and management of an organization had become. He allowed someone to handle the off-the-field aspects at a high level.” Texas A&M GM Derek Miller tells Khan he has witnessed the evolution firsthand. When he was Bowling Green’s DPP in 2018, he was the only full-time recruiting staffer in the department. Now he oversees a 35-person operation at A&M, with a dozen full-timers and 23 students. He still evaluates and oversees recruiting, but talking to agents and negotiating contracts is his top priority. “The job is a lot more forward-thinking than ever. The general manager role is as much NIL and contract conversations and the portal (as anything).” (link)

Stanford found a creative solution for playing its home softball games while the Cardinal’s new $50M stadium is being built. HC Jessica Allister tells ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura that "my initial thoughts were, 'Alright, they're building you a $50M stadium, there's going to be some bumps and bruises along the way, so that's okay.’ And then my next thought was this is somebody's senior year and this is also 25% of most of the student-athletes' Stanford experience on our campus, and we need to find a way to make sure that it can be as good as it possibly can be." Allister dismissed solutions that included playing games on another campus, and Cardinal Assoc. AD for Facilities and Housing Dan Levine explains: "You need a public address, you need some sort of bleachers. It'd be really nice if you have a scoreboard, video board, all these pieces. And we were looking all over campus, how could this work? We looked at some of our smaller facilities and as we were talking, I remember being on Google Maps and looking at the size of the softball field and saying, 'I think we might be able to drop it in the [football] stadium.'" Allister recalls AD Bernard Muir saying: “‘Jess, we've got it. You're playing in the football stadium. … Think about it. You got the grass, we've got the stands, we have the scoreboard, we've got the music, we've got the concessions, the bathrooms, everything for the game day experience is there, the lights. They need new sod anyway, we'll skin it, put it in an infield, build it out, play in the football stadium.” Check out the setup inside. (link)

NACMA hosted its Revenue Generation Summit on April 13-14 at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo. The summit brought together industry professionals to exchange ideas, explore strategies, and develop actionable plans for driving revenue in new and innovative ways, and Cal Chief Marketing & Communications Officer/NACMA President Markeisha Everett says: "As the business model of college athletics undergoes a fundamental shift, it's imperative that we prepare our members with the tools and knowledge to adapt and thrive. This summit was a powerful step in equipping external leaders to innovate, collaborate, and maximize every revenue opportunity available." During the summit, leaders shared their expertise on several topics, including building and leading a revenue-generation team, maximizing revenue through external collaboration, and optimizing venue utilization. The event also featured a fireside chat with Kansas State AD Gene Taylor. (link)

Citing Nielsen research, ESPN’s David Purdum notes there were “more ads for alcohol than for sports betting during NBA, WNBA and MLB programming in 2024. Betting ads were more frequent than alcohol during NFL, NHL, PGA, NASCAR and MLS programming. NHL games had the highest percentage of gambling-related ads of the major sports leagues at 4.2%.” Purdum also notes that “sportsbooks accounted for 0.8% of the total national spend on television commercials in 2024, while advertising for alcohol represented 1.4%. Gambling and alcohol combined for less than 5% of the total advertising during sports content. … Overall, the number of TV ads for traditional sportsbooks, not including fantasy sports operators, dropped 17% year over year in 2024 and are down 44% since their peak in 2021. However, sportsbooks' spending on advertising has remained relatively flat, at approximately $666M in 2024, with rising costs for commercials playing a role in the decrease in betting ads. ISpot.tv, a company that measures brand and business impact of TV and streaming advertising, found 499 airings for sports betting brands during the NFL regular season – a 3.3% year-over-year decrease.” More from Purdum. Whomever is hired as Hawaii’s next athletic director could receive a base salary of at least $500K plus another $100K in incentives according to The Island News’ Duane Shimogawa. For context, former AD Craig Angelos’ salary was in the “mid $300Ks” per UH President Wendy Hensel, who adds: “If we want to secure a dynamic, experienced leader who can navigate this landscape, we must be prepared to offer a competitive package, and so we'll be having conversations about what that looks like and I want to ensure the board that we will both be fiscally efficient but also mindful of the importance that athletics play in the university as a whole and to the state.” Hensel expects to name a finalist to present to the board by mid-summer, if not sooner. UC Davis AD Rocko DeLuca’s contract extension through January of 2030 came with a signing bonus of $18K & with new base pay of $361K with annual 3% increases. DeLuca also has $30K worth of possible annual incentives, which include a $12.5K bonus for department fundraising of over $1.3M. If the institution wants to terminate the agreement, it would owe DeLuca 100% of the liquidated damages in year 1, a rate that decreases by 20% each year of the five-year deal. If DeLuca were to leave on his own accord for a gig in the Power 5, Big West, Mountain West or Big Sky, he’d owe a lump sum of $50K. All data per CollegeAD. (link)

Former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban and former NCAA Chief Medical Officer Brian Hainline join the Athletes OnBalance podcast to discuss the role of mental health in athlete development, treating mental wellness with the same urgency as physical injuries and developing a culture that promotes overall wellbeing. Hainline asserts that “we must understand that physical and mental health are inseparable. They’re intertwined at every level of our physiology. So we know with certainty, for example, that mental health disorders can predict physical injuries. We know disordered sleeping predicts a musculoskeletal injury more than overtraining does. We know that if you have an injury and in the recovery phase you become clinically depressed or develop an anxiety disorder, that’s going to prolong your recovery. … You can have a torn ACL and have perfectly reconstructed biomechanically ACL repaired, but if you develop a clinical depression postoperatively, that predicts that the ACL will not take. Just think about that.” Hainline adds that coaches are “data-driven,” so showing them this data has helped reshape the culture as it relates to addressing mental health. Lots more. (link)

In a Lawrence Journal-World article, Kansas Deputy AD for External Affairs and Revenue Generation Jason Booker says he likes KU’s odds of being selected as a base camp for the 2026 FIFA World Cup: “They love the university community and the assets that a college could bring for a base camp, meaning all the things that we do to help support our teams: laundry services, weight facilities, all those things you can think about.” Booker also reiterates that the end of the year, after the football season, “would still be the goal, for sure,” to start Phase II of the Booth Memorial Stadium renovations. Texas A&M fired an unnamed athletic department employee in January for impermissible sports wagering, which involved 172 wagers totaling $412.32, including two bets on Aggies sports. The Austin American-Statesman’s Brian Davis notes that at the start of the 2023-24 academic year, the SEC entered into a contract with US Integrity to utilize its ProhiBet monitoring program. ProhiBet notified Texas A&M officials on January 12 of an issue and the school notified the conference. From there, the NCAA compliance staff ruled the offense as a Level III violation. Since the person was no longer employed by A&M, no further action was necessary. The SEC accepted A&M’s actions and will not impose any additional penalties. Davis adds: “In March, the Austin American-Statesman reported that five University of Texas individuals were found to have made $14,885.76 in impermissible wagers from July 11 to Nov. 4, 2024. One football player was required to pay restitution to regain his eligibility, and another football athlete sought help from his parents for $9,600 in impermissible wagers while at UT.” (link)

Air Force has concluded an investigation into its Men’s Soccer program after eight cadet-athletes were suspended back in October in connection with “allegations of physical, unprofessional, and demeaning misconduct inflicted on other members of the team.” The Gazette’s Brent Briggeman indicates “unspecified disciplinary actions” have been handed down to some members of the team & Falcons AD Nathan Pine says his staff will work across the department to ensure “that all of our cadet-athletes and staff fully understand and embrace the clear lines between healthy teambuilding activities and unhealthy behaviors.” (link)

Calgary Flames prospect Henry Mews has announced he’s leaving the Sudbury Wolves of the OHL to play college hockey at Michigan, and The Daily Faceoff’s Jeff Marek expects several players to begin making the jump. “Expect to start hearing more and more about players leaving CHL to go play college hockey. Some big names, too. And while most of us have our eyes on Michigan, Michigan State, BU and other heavyweight programs, I’m told to watch Penn State, who this season gave their program a major shot in the arm making it to the Frozen Four. The term shared with me was ‘war chest’ when it comes to luring players. Penn State dearly would love to start graduating players into the NHL. This season was a major step.” (link)

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved an optional experimental video review coaches challenge rule that will go into effect for soccer this fall. Under the rule, coaches will have one video review challenge. If the challenge is successful, the coach will retain the right to challenge one more time for the rest of the match. The panel also approved the adoption of two rules that were put in place by the International Football Association Board in July. One will eliminate a straight red card being issued for nondeliberate handling of the ball in the penalty area that denies a goal or goal-scoring opportunity. Red cards will be reserved for “deliberate, cynical handling that denies a goal or goal-scoring opportunity.” The other change amends encroachment by teammates of the kicker or goalkeeper during a penalty kick and states that referees should penalize the encroachment “only if the player at fault prevents an opponent from playing the ball, challenges an opponent for the ball and then scores or prevents a goal, attempts to score or prevent a goal, or creates or stops a goal-scoring opportunity.” (link)

Here’s the latest from Netflix on its sports rights strategy in yesterday’s earnings call. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos: “...our live event strategy is unchanged, and we remain really focused on the big breakthrough events. Our audiences love them, and so anything, anything we chase, in the event space or the sports space, is a deal that has to make economic sense as well. [...] What we have seen with live is this very outsized positives around conversation and acquisition, and we suspect retention, and we’re really excited to keep building on that.” (link)

ESPN delivered its most-watched Nielsen Q1 in eight years, averaging 868K viewers during every minute of January, February and March across its primary network. Additionally, ESPN’s average-minute-audience was up 22% overall and 15% in the Persons 18-49 demo from Nielsen Q1 in 2024. Isolating primetime (8-11 p.m. ET), ESPN averaged 2.299M viewers on each of the 90 nights, its best within the Nielsen Q1 since 2012 and a 36% YoY increase. Combining all of ESPN’s programming with sports programming on ABC, fans consumed more of ESPN’s content (145.1B minutes) than any other Nielsen Q1 dating back 13 years (2012) and the totality was up 16% YoY. For the quarter, across all its Nielsen-rated networks, ESPN achieved 36% sports viewership, up from 33% in the same 2024 quarter. (link); Awful Announcing’s Matt Yoder points out the expanded College Football Playoff was a significant contributor to the uptick: “Instead of just having one game after the traditional bowl season, ESPN got an extra semifinal round after the new year and the championship game. It also probably helped that ratings juggernauts like Ohio State, Texas, Notre Dame, and Penn State were involved.” (link)
