The LA Times’ Kartje with additional reporting around the departure of USC AD Bohn: “Bohn made inappropriate comments about the physical appearance of female colleagues, including remarks about their dress, hair and weight, that staff members said made them feel uncomfortable, according to two USC sources with knowledge of the incidents. They spoke on condition of anonymity fearing retaliation. They said Bohn’s comments left colleagues — especially women — feeling awkward. Three USC sources said several people confronted Bohn about comments they felt were inappropriate, but they continued.” More. (link)

The Athletic’s Mandel notes the immediate leadership challenge for USC: “(Trojans President) Folt now faces immense pressure to hire a rock-solid new athletics director — something USC has failed to do in at least 30 years — because the school is embarking on the most consequential athletics moment in its modern history. There’s no understanding of the enormity of the school’s Big Ten move, one filled with a million logistical challenges and extreme competitive risks. Plenty of schools have changed conferences through the years, but no Power 5 program with national championship aspirations has up and moved to a league headquartered 2,000 miles to the east. Hiring the right leader to oversee those efforts will be essential.” (link)

ESPN’s Hale pens a lengthy Twitter thread summing up the ACC’s current status vis-a-vis revenue and submits there are five options moving forward: 1) everyone waits until 2036-ish; 2) Notre Dame joins or other expansion; 3) ESPN renegotiates; 4) The league is dissolved; or, 5) Schools fight the grant-of-rights in court. Hale goes on to parse why, exactly, the money is so important, and aside from the obvious, he points out the “courts could soon erase the middle man & determine athletes are employees w/salaries from schools. That'd be the end for the ACC, which is why Phillips was in DC lobbying Congress to nix employee convo & halt future litigation. That's not likely though. It's more than buying the best players though. Multiple ADs have suggested the perception of a ‘Power 2’ could make recruiting outside the SEC/B1G impossible. Just look how much (AAC Commissioner) Aresco has put into fighting the P5 label. Phillips acknowledged it's already a concern.” With it being unlikely Notre Dame will ever become a full member, Hale reports the ACC has looked at potentially adding Washington, Oregon, West Virginia and SMU, and “from what I’m told the $$ just aren’t there.” Fighting the GOR in court, Hale concludes, is the “only remotely likely outcome,” albeit a last resort. In sum, though, Hale contends: “The bottom line here is there is ZERO incentive -- NONE, NADA, ZERO -- for any ACC schools to make someone else's path to more money easier by leaving for the Big 12 or any other non-SEC/B1G school. And also, the schools left behind would sue, sue, sue.” Lots more. (link)

Sportico’s McCann breaks down the Ivy League’s defense in its motion to dismiss an antitrust lawsuit regarding the conference’s decision not to award athletic scholarships. Ivy student-athletes, the league argues, are subject to the same academic standards and the same opportunities to address economic need as their classmates. Further, the schools assert that conferences are afforded autonomy to design rules as they see fit, and prospective students have the ability to attend colleges in other conferences. The league argues: “Some student-athletes considering a school in the Ivy League might choose instead a full athletic scholarship from UVA, Michigan, Cal, UCLA, Duke, North Carolina, Stanford, Georgetown, Rice, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt” or other non-Ivy schools that are likewise academically prestigious with major DI athletic programs. Furthermore, the Ivy League cites the Alston case, in which the district court issued an injunction permitting “any NCAA member conference” to limit education-related compensation or benefits for athletes. The University of California has settled the discrimination lawsuit filed against UC Santa Barbara by former Softball HC Galicinao and AC Hendricks. Galicinao presented her findings, coined “Operation Close the Gap,” to then-interim AD Barsky and then-Assoc. AD for Fan Services, Ticketing and Sponsorship Sales/Softball sport administrator Cornet in March 2022, in which she outlined the “glaring inequities” between the compensation for coaches of men’s and women’s teams. Specifically, in 2020, she noted that her salary was $86,761 while UCSB Baseball HC Checketts made $221,197. Galiciano said there were no follow-ups to her presentation, but instead, after she notified the school of her intent to sue, she was terminated. Both Galicinao and Hendricks accused the university of retaliation in addition to their discrimination and equal pay claims. (link)

Arizona State AD Anderson knows Desert Financial Arena is in need of some love: “It’s a tired arena. Maybe minimally functional but it's not a very exciting venue. That has been a constant item for me to address since I have been here and we continue to look at that where, for competitive purposes, recruiting, we have to make some upgrades. Equally important for the aesthetics and quite frankly, the safety of the place. I’m an attorney by trade. I used to do litigation. I know risk management and so I know liability threats.” Key needs: handrails on steps throughout the facility, a new sound system, food & beverage upgrades, advertising opportunities. Anderson runs through the challenges of building a new venue, also adds about a solution: “It is a priority for me personally. We have to address it in a very short order. For competitive purposes, fan experience overall and a big part of that is the safety factor.” (link)

The Athletic’s Auerbach wonders “How did the Duke and Clemson softball teams get this good this quickly?” The Blue Devils are in their sixth season of competition, while the Tigers are in their fourth and both programs are seeded in the NCAA Tournament this year. Auerbach: “These two programs are young yet wildly successful, emblematic of a growing sport that has rewarded investment. Both schools needed to add a women’s sport to comply with Title IX, and both chose softball because they believed it could succeed.” Clemson sold out of season tickets for its inaugural season in a week and the school is already looking at expanding the stadium by 600+ seats with revenue triple what was projected, according to AD Neff. For her part, Duke AD King, who has worked with the softball program since its inception, recalls the importance of the hiring process, and how finding a leader who could both pause their career - at least, the day-to-day coaching and game prep part - to build a program from scratch but also handle potential losses in the early years. On HC Young, King observes: “We were thinking about who was going to come in and be ready to handle slow progress because it’s a build. But, wow. She’s been amazing. … I have to stop saying it’s a program she’s building. Because she’s built it.” More. (link)

The Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Rules Committee has proposed a clearer definition of what should be considered a bona fide competition in the sport. The committee members recommended eliminating non-collegiate athletes from participating in an official program of collegiate meets. However, those athletes would be allowed to compete in exhibition events conducted outside the meet program. For team diving competitions, the committee recommends each team consist of three divers from the same school; each diver would complete one-third of the prescribed list of six dives/two dives at any level; the team would complete one dive for every group; and several other criteria. Additionally, the committee approved an experimental rule for next season that allows coaches to review video after the 30-minute protest time expires. Other proposals include an optional rule to allow the use of underwater cameras for video review to confirm disqualification for swimming infractions; allowing the use of tape, kinesiology tape and compression sleeves to treat documented medical conditions; and deciding ties based on methods other than a swim-off, such as a coin toss, if agreed upon by both coaches. Full update. (link)

USC AD Bohn has resigned, per multiple sources. In a statement to the Los Angeles Times, Bohn writes, in part: “I have dedicated my life to serving student-athletes and advancing the enterprise of intercollegiate athletics. I will always be proud of leading the program out of the most tumultuous times in the history of the profession and at USC with a restored reputation and national milestone accomplishments. […] I have been fortunate to have had so many wonderful opportunities and met so many terrific people, and I depart wishing the very best to all with whom I worked and served. In moving on, it is important now that I focus on being present with my treasured family, addressing ongoing health challenges, and reflecting on how I can be impactful in the future.” (link)

Power Paydays…
+ USA Today’s Berkowitz breaks down how much schools in each Power 5 conference made in FY22. The Big Ten had the largest revenue total at $845.6M and the highest per-school distribution at about $58.8M for each school other than Nebraska, Maryland and Rutgers. The SEC’s revenue totaled $802M, with each school receiving around $49.9M, followed by the ACC ($617M, about $40M per school), Pac-12 ($580.9M, $37M per school) and Big 12 ($480M, roughly $43M per school).
+ SEC Commissioner Sankey is credited with $3.7M in compensation for calendar year 2021, Pac-12 Commissioner Kliavkoff earned around $1.8M (annualized at $3.6M), former Big Ten Commissioner Warren made roughly $3.6M, former Big 12 Commissioner Bowlsby is credited with $4.05M in 2021 earnings, and former ACC Commissioner Swofford’s pay totaled $3.4M. Meanwhile, Former Pac-12 Commissioner Scott earned the highest total, bringing in $4.1M. (link)
+ Berkowitz also notes Scott’s total included $1.5M in severance, an $875K bonus and a $1.9M loan. “Conference spokesman says Scott was paid additional money in 2022 (his contract had been set to run thru June 2022). The loan, which dates to the start of his time with the conference, is due in June 2024. Through 2021, Scott had totaled $48.7M in pay from the Pac-12 over 12.5 years.” (link)
+ More on the Pac-12’s FY22 budget, with the league reporting revenues of $464M and net operating expenses of $41M. For 2021-2022, the Pac-12 Networks reported revenues of $117M and net operating expenses of $77M. Consolidated expenses for the Conference and Networks together decreased by 9% from the last pre-pandemic 2019-2020 financial results. Washington President/Pac-12 Board of Directors Chair Cauce: “The record financial results announced today position the Pac-12 for future growth and success as we continue our media rights discussions. Most importantly this growth enables us to provide best-in-class support for our student-athletes, from health and well-being to academic and athletic education, training and opportunities.” (link)

U.S. Senator Graham (R-SC) has introduced a NIL bill that would establish an NIL clearinghouse, which would have the power to fine anyone, sue anyone and ban anyone from participating in college athletics, according to On3’s Nakos, who adds: “A source provided On3 with the draft, which would basically establish another version of the NCAA to preside over name, image and likeness activity. The bill outlines various restrictions on student-athletes and includes the following specific language: “The NIL Clearinghouse shall carry out enforcement actions for any violation of this Act, including by levying fines, imposing penalties, including suspension or a permanent ban of an individual or entity from participation in varsity intercollegiate sports competition for a period determined by the NIL Clearinghouse and commencing civil actions and seeking all appropriate legal, equitable, or other relief, including damages and injunctions.” (link, link)

Texas A&M played an integral role in shaping House Bill 2804, which passed the Senate this week, according to The Eagle’s Brown. The bill would allow universities to be involved in facilitating NIL deals with student-athletes, allow student-athletes to license the universities’ real and intellectual property and bar the NCAA or any athletic organization or conference from penalizing a university for anything that is spelled out in the bill. INFLCR CEO Cavale says Aggies AD Bjork played a major part in the new measure. “There’s a lot of things going on right now in college sports, especially for an athletic director at Texas A&M to consider, and he’s spent considerable time on this, because student-athletes are No. 1 in his book. I’ve seen that in a lot of things he’s worked on. I think that’s an important point, because when you look at who has been working on this at the state, his hours are right up there at the top.” The House must approve some Senate changes to the bill before sending it to Governor Abbott’s desk. Now that the job is officially his, incoming Hawaii Angelos says he’s ready to listen and learn about the uniqueness of college sports in the state. “And I know if I do that and they recognize that I’m humble coming into this process and wanting to learn, listen and grow then I think I’ll mesh pretty well.” Finding a permanent football stadium will be among his top priorities, and Angelos says he will focus on fundraising to that end. “It’s going to take a lot of people working together. We’ve got to be unified in our approach. If we’re aligned ... we can accomplish a lot of things.” Former Rainbow Warriors football student-athlete/AC/NFL veteran Minao says it will be important for Angelos to quickly acclimate himself and make connections within the community. “And just because you wear slippers doesn’t mean you have aloha.” (link)

With estimates for a comprehensive overhaul of Gampel Arena coming back at around $300M, Connecticut will “will focus on what is necessary instead of what remains eventually possible,” according to The Darien Times’ Anthony.” Huskies AD Benedict adds that the arena likely won’t look much different in five years, noting 10 is more realistic. “There are a lot of things that would be great to have. They all come with a price tag, unfortunately. Certainly we think Gampel needs a little bit of a refresh. If we had an endless amount of money, you might consider starting over. But I don’t know that that’s in our thought process right now. There are a lot of things we’re looking at to try to freshen things up. … We need to try to address our premium offerings, which we have very little of, which means, how do we create some club spaces? How do we create better points of sale and options from a concession standpoint? And the biggest thing is how our fans can move in and out and around the building, which is difficult, because we don’t have an outer concourse. So it really clogs things up. We want to be sold out and that creates problems with bathrooms and points of sale and concessions.” More from Benedict. (link)

Washington State AD Chun talks about his career and being named to the Asian Hall of Fame and says of being the first Asian American AD of a Power 5 school: “It's really been important to me that it's one thing to be the first, but it's a problem if you're the last. So, I think that's always been my focus is I recognize the importance of representation. I know, growing up in this country, there just weren't a lot of Asian Americans that you could see in sports, whether it's competing and things, you know, it's just one of those things, if you don't see it, it's just hard to believe it. … If you look at who the minority groups are, who the underrepresented groups are in college athletics, we are the minority of the minorities. So, it's nice to be able to celebrate a lot of the success stories that are going around college athletics. It’s also a nice opportunity to hear success stories of others. It's empowering for everybody." (link)
