Arkansas State AD Jeff Purinton is exiting Jonesboro to take a role with Learfield, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. (link)

Athletes.org Co-Founder Jim Cavale talks about AO’s role in the industry moving forward and points out that “right-to-work states, which most of the Southern states are, are anti-unionization in a lot of ways and have laws that don't allow it. And who does the president work for at a public institution? They work for the governor basically. So, it’s very polarizing that at the presidential level and at the state government level can be looked at as, ‘No, we're not doing anything with unionization. The problem is the analogy in their head that they're using is the UAW. The analogy in their head that they should be using is the NFLPA, who has a partnership that ‘s not adversarial. The players, the NFLPA, the NFL have a partnership in the greatest business in sports, so we need more of the leaders at the presidential level of the school and the state government level to understand that unionization in sports…is a solution. When you go down to the commissioner and AD level, you have to have a little bit of empathy for them because they really don’t make decisions on their own. Who does the commissioner of a conference report to? The presidents. … So we do need commissioners and ADs to step up. Somebody’s got to lead. Leadership is hard. It takes conviction in your own beliefs, it takes a willingness to cast a vision that may get a lot of pushback, but also a belief in that vision to pursue it all the way to the end.” More. (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork tells The Lantern he wants to launch a campaign to build a new ice rink for both Hockey programs: “Get the funding plan launched, get our capital campaign launched, we’re having conversations with donors, but until we have a real true pathway, you can’t really have a true conversation and expect a commitment. So, we need the outline by this summer, and that will allow us to press the pedal and try to get this thing off the ground.” As for upgrades to the Schottenstein Center: “We have a lot of things in motion. We need to make Ohio State basketball ‘cool’ if you will. For students, for recruits, for our fans; so we’re working on a lot of things regarding game-day atmosphere.” Bjork also continues to push for a revamp of the college football calendar: “If we ever want to get back to an academic nexus in this conversation - which we all say we do, we believe in that - we need to move the portal windows to the spring at the end of the academic year.” (link)

AD Advisors & Timark have published a study that analyzed every single Men’s Basketball transfers back to 2019 (14,000+ moves). Here are some of the core findings: “Approximately 65% of all the Division I basketball-playing student-athletes who entered the transfer portal, regardless of the competition level their career began at, either transferred down a level or did not find a new home. At the highest competition level in this study (Tier 1), the Power 4 conferences and the Big East, 70% of student-athletes who entered the portal transferred down or did not find a new home. At the lowest competition level in this study (Tier 3), which was the majority of DI programs, 61% of student-athletes who entered the portal transferred down or did not find a new home. For those student-athletes, the only down transfer destinations are programs outside of Division I. Additionally, the most common outcome for Tier 1 student-athletes who entered the portal and remained in Tier 1 was intra-conference destinations. Further, the majority of these portal entrants still transferred to a lower-ranked team.” Tons more. (link)

Oregon Football HC Dan Lanning discusses the Ducks’ success in the transfer portal and tells Sports Illustrated’s Bri Amaranthus that “I think one, this place has been a place that's really open and honest and provides opportunities. I'm really proud going into year four as the head coach here, we haven't lost a starter to the transfer portal. I think that speaks volumes about what's the experience for our players. They really enjoy being here. They feel like they're getting developed and they're taken care of. … In a landscape where you can take care of players, that's what we want to be. I don't want to get anybody at a discount. I don't want to say, 'Oh you came here and worked for cheap.' If they do a great job, they deserve to reap the benefits of that. They're the ones filling the stands. And we've been able to be competitive from that environment. We're probably not always the highest bidder. In fact, I know we aren't. But I know that we're able to be competitive and fair with our players and create great opportunities for them.” Lanning goes on to explain that “I always feel like being honest and transparent is key to having success. And sometimes it's not always the message somebody wants to hear, but if they hear the truth and they know you're telling the truth, then they can lean in on that. And we've had a lot of success being honest with our players.” (link)

The latest murmurs from inside Men’s Basketball comes from Fox Sports’ John Fanta as one “high major coach” tells him: “This is an absolute cesspool. It's birthed by the far-too-long original sin of NCAA greed. The adults in the room gave NIL with no guidelines. No guidance. No rules. Imagine the NBA with annual unrestricted free agency, and no salary cap. And now imagine asking a team full of players earning six figures to go to class.” Another, this one from the mid-major ranks: “This is a Grade-A f------ goat rodeo. I need to pray the rosary to get through the offseason.” One more perspective, this from a “high major” HC: “It's challenging, but it's still an amazing sport. I hate when coaches complain because we chose this life, but there are obvious changes that need to happen to grow our game and increase its popularity outside of March Madness. Hopefully the NCAA, conferences and the powers that be can move swiftly to improve the overall product from NIL to some rule changes (less video review, quarters, etc.) that I believe would help.” (link)

More from former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban and former NCAA Chief Medical Officer Brian Hainline on the Athletes OnBalance podcast. Saban points out that players are also noticing that taking care of their mental health improves performance and are increasingly willing to work with professionals to that end. “More people were willing to say, ‘I don’t see this as somebody looking at me like I’ve got something wrong with me.’ They looked at it like ‘This is an opportunity for me to develop if I use these resources.’ So, that culture piece is really, really important because people have a hard time admitting ‘I have a problem here. I need to improve.’ That’s a tough hurdle for some folks to get over.” Saban also talks about being an early advocate of rethinking two-a-day practices while he was at LSU: “We had 33 guys need IVs during the first two-a-day. So, I said we can’t have two-a-days, it’s too hot here in August.” After consulting with doctors, Saban was told that what was important was ensuring that players had two opportunities to hydrate and eat between practices. “So if you practiced in the morning, at night, the next afternoon you would accomplish that because you’re creating a greater space between practices." The NCAA, however, forbade Saban’s team from doing that, so the Tigers only practiced 26 times rather than 29 before their first games for several years. Lots more. (link)

"Athletics has always been a profound part of my life. … It taught me the value of teamwork, it taught me how to work well with others to get to a common goal and it also challenged me and pushed me." That's Fairfield Senior Assoc. AD for Compliance & Governance Sara Richwine on the latest episode of The Career Hustle, where she reflects on her experience as a multi-sport student-athlete at Muhlenberg College (DIII) and how athletics was always at the core of her trajectory. Richwine and Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz also discuss developing core values, assessing career opportunities, the importance of critical thinking for compliance administrators and more, including the differences between DI, II and III and the common threads that transcend divisional models. When assessing career opportunities, Richwine explains she determines whether the institution’s core values align with her own, how the athletic department positively contributes to campus and the community and how long coaches stay. “Sometimes really high turnover can be a red flag, so I take a look at that and also when I go on interviews, how are coaches and student-athletes and staff talking about the university, talking about the people in charge? … And then when I take a look at the job itself, is it a good fit for my skill set? Will this position challenge me? And then most importantly, will it help me to grow and develop in my career and do I feel like I can make an impact here?” Lots more in the full interview on Connect. Utah State AD Diana Sabau confirms she was aware that the four schools who first departed for the Pac-12 would do so a month before the announcement was made and adds: "I was really worried last summer in August, when they started talking about the first four that were going to be invited to the pack. And I was like, ‘Oh my God, I've done 18 presentations, I've talked to all these people.’ And then it started to fall into place. And people said, ‘Well, be patient. You're not going to be part of the first group, but you're going to be asked.’ ... Then the Mountain West came to everybody and said, 'We need you to sign this MOU and we're going to pay Air Force and UNLV $10M and everybody else is just going to be $2M. And I was like, hold on, Utah State, we went to the second round, we got everybody in the Mountain West units for going to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with Danny Sprinkle a year ago, and we're only going to get two? I don't want to be put in a corner. I don't want Utah State to be put in a corner. So, then we just got really aggressive, and it just went from there." (link)

The Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty shares more of Stanford Men’s Basketball HC Kyle Smith’s remarks about a potential relegation and promotion system in the ACC. Smith noted earlier this month in San Antonio that “the ACC, we’re struggling for a place in the marketplace. We need to be the first ones to do something like this. The big boys, the SEC and Big Ten, are trying to take over. Put some pressure on them and the Big 12, too. This is the ACC! The ACC is basketball. So you come out and say: ‘We’re going to relegate teams to raise excitement and get back on top.’ … We might need to think of a better word than relegation. You know, it could sting. But that’s what it would be! Relegation! And if we try it and it doesn’t work, what’s the worst case? We get four teams in the tournament? That just happened.” Smith has yet to workshop the idea with other league HCs but acknowledges that Duke and North Carolina are unlikely to embrace a relegation system. His counter is that if they lost enough conference games to be in danger of relegation, “then you’re probably on a pretty hot seat anyway.” (link)

Rutgers football student-athlete Jett Elad and HC Greg Schiano testified this week that they believed Elad would be eligible to play this season based on the ruling that granted Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia another season of eligibility. The NCAA’s rejection of Elad and Rutgers’ waiver request “would deprive Elad of a chance to play for ‘the coach of his dreams’ while earning a ‘half-million dollar contract,’” according to Elad’s attorney. The value of the NIL deal, which was revealed by the defense during their cross-examination of Elad, is roughly $650K, including a base of $550K and a $100K incentive to finish as a first-team All-Big Ten selection.” Schiano testified that the Scarlet Knights recruited Elad because he provided “great value at a position of need” and had “multi-positional value.” The price they reached for his NIL deal was based on what Rutgers’ “NIL people” believed to be his value on the transfer market, Schiano added. NCAA lead attorney Kenneth Racowski argued that the repercussions of this case will “impact the landscape of college football.” He added there “has to be a line somewhere” when it comes to eligibility. UTEP will discontinue its Women’s Tennis program “effective immediately.” Miners AD Jim Senter: “We made this decision following a thoughtful analysis and with a heavy heart.” Under the FAQ section on “Why tennis & why now?”: “UTEP does not have an on-campus tennis facility. Building a viable tennis facility would be cost prohibitive, and a more extensive donor base would be required to raise sufficient funding. Discontinuing tennis will enable the reallocation of resources to other sports programs as UTEP prepares for upcoming changes to college athletics, including revenue sharing and roster caps.” (link)

Penn is in discussions about the possible formation of an NIL collective, according to the Daily Pennsylvanian’s Sean McKeown and Walker Carnathan, who report: “One source close to the matter reported a conversation in which a Penn men’s basketball coach told an athlete that some players would be paid through a collective in the near future. Another source claimed that a collective has already been in use but that the measure is currently paused. … One of the sources said that the collective would only be designed for select players within Penn’s athletic programs. Multiple sources indicated that Penn has begun introductory talks regarding a collective, with one specifying that Penn was awaiting approval from the Ivy League.” Furthermore, “one source indicated that Penn’s efforts were driven by alumni in an effort to retain top talent and maintain national competitiveness.” (link)

The Athletic’s Sam Khan chronicles the evolution of the GM role and traces its roots back to 2006 when former Georgia Tech HC Geoff Collins, then on the Western Carolina staff, agreed to join the Yellow Jackets’ staff under then-HC Chan Gailey as Director of High School Relations. Collins agreed but wanted to change the job's title. Collins recalls Gailey’s response: “I don’t care what you call yourself, I just want you to come here and help us recruit.” Collins, after a conversation with now-Nebraska HC Matt Rhule, eventually landed on the title Director of Player Personnel, a precursor to today’s GM. Khan notes that former LSU HC Ed Orgeron had a more refined vision for the GM role when he hired Austin Thomas to fill it. Thomas, who now serves as the Tigers’ Senior Assoc. AD for Football Administration, tells Khan: “Coach O had a vision for understanding how big the college football world and management of an organization had become. He allowed someone to handle the off-the-field aspects at a high level.” Texas A&M GM Derek Miller tells Khan he has witnessed the evolution firsthand. When he was Bowling Green’s DPP in 2018, he was the only full-time recruiting staffer in the department. Now he oversees a 35-person operation at A&M, with a dozen full-timers and 23 students. He still evaluates and oversees recruiting, but talking to agents and negotiating contracts is his top priority. “The job is a lot more forward-thinking than ever. The general manager role is as much NIL and contract conversations and the portal (as anything).” (link)

Stanford found a creative solution for playing its home softball games while the Cardinal’s new $50M stadium is being built. HC Jessica Allister tells ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura that "my initial thoughts were, 'Alright, they're building you a $50M stadium, there's going to be some bumps and bruises along the way, so that's okay.’ And then my next thought was this is somebody's senior year and this is also 25% of most of the student-athletes' Stanford experience on our campus, and we need to find a way to make sure that it can be as good as it possibly can be." Allister dismissed solutions that included playing games on another campus, and Cardinal Assoc. AD for Facilities and Housing Dan Levine explains: "You need a public address, you need some sort of bleachers. It'd be really nice if you have a scoreboard, video board, all these pieces. And we were looking all over campus, how could this work? We looked at some of our smaller facilities and as we were talking, I remember being on Google Maps and looking at the size of the softball field and saying, 'I think we might be able to drop it in the [football] stadium.'" Allister recalls AD Bernard Muir saying: “‘Jess, we've got it. You're playing in the football stadium. … Think about it. You got the grass, we've got the stands, we have the scoreboard, we've got the music, we've got the concessions, the bathrooms, everything for the game day experience is there, the lights. They need new sod anyway, we'll skin it, put it in an infield, build it out, play in the football stadium.” Check out the setup inside. (link)

NACMA hosted its Revenue Generation Summit on April 13-14 at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo. The summit brought together industry professionals to exchange ideas, explore strategies, and develop actionable plans for driving revenue in new and innovative ways, and Cal Chief Marketing & Communications Officer/NACMA President Markeisha Everett says: "As the business model of college athletics undergoes a fundamental shift, it's imperative that we prepare our members with the tools and knowledge to adapt and thrive. This summit was a powerful step in equipping external leaders to innovate, collaborate, and maximize every revenue opportunity available." During the summit, leaders shared their expertise on several topics, including building and leading a revenue-generation team, maximizing revenue through external collaboration, and optimizing venue utilization. The event also featured a fireside chat with Kansas State AD Gene Taylor. (link)

Citing Nielsen research, ESPN’s David Purdum notes there were “more ads for alcohol than for sports betting during NBA, WNBA and MLB programming in 2024. Betting ads were more frequent than alcohol during NFL, NHL, PGA, NASCAR and MLS programming. NHL games had the highest percentage of gambling-related ads of the major sports leagues at 4.2%.” Purdum also notes that “sportsbooks accounted for 0.8% of the total national spend on television commercials in 2024, while advertising for alcohol represented 1.4%. Gambling and alcohol combined for less than 5% of the total advertising during sports content. … Overall, the number of TV ads for traditional sportsbooks, not including fantasy sports operators, dropped 17% year over year in 2024 and are down 44% since their peak in 2021. However, sportsbooks' spending on advertising has remained relatively flat, at approximately $666M in 2024, with rising costs for commercials playing a role in the decrease in betting ads. ISpot.tv, a company that measures brand and business impact of TV and streaming advertising, found 499 airings for sports betting brands during the NFL regular season – a 3.3% year-over-year decrease.” More from Purdum.
