“It's more like the quicksand thing, where you’re just constantly sinking. It’s just a matter of how quickly and how much rope you have, where you’re trying to pull yourself out. We’re doing better than most, at the end of the day. However you want to measure the output of the investment we’re making, I would put our results up against anybody’s.” That’s UConn AD David Benedict to The Hour’s Mike Anthony on how it feels to lead & make decisions in the current industry environment. More: “...the general environment with revenue sharing and how it’s playing out relative to talent acquisition is, I would say, significantly challenged because of the lack of any sort of guidelines, policies. There’s just a lot of questions and ultimately there’s no real hard data. When you’re dealing with a market like we are, that is very competitive, and there’s no real data you can rely on … it makes for a very chaotic situation. None of that is to suggest I’m not in favor of a student-athlete’s having the opportunity to revenue share. It’s just that there’s no structure to this, at all.” Benedict also says the Huskies will set a new fiscal year fundraising record, with a total likely to “almost double” the previous high water mark of $24M. Lots more. (link)

Southern Illinois AD Tim Leonard discusses a number of items with WSIU’s Brad Palmer, including the new partnership between the Missouri Valley Football Conference & the Summit League: “It’s an opportunity for the four Dakota schools to have a little bit more say and power in terms of membership as it relates to football. That league continues to grow and they may look at some schools that play FCS football that they want to bring in. If they were to do that, we’d probably look at doing north and south divisions, but the good news is I really don’t think it’s going to impact the value of the Missouri Valley Football Conference, which is regarded by everyone as the most premium FCS football conference. [...] We’ve already decided what our governance structure will look like and the thought is now to hire a Deputy Commissioner who will oversee football. That should be good for everybody.” More. Add Texas Tech Board of Regents chairman & notable Red Raiders donor Cody Campbell to the list of those who believe there’s still significantly more media value available to college athletics - if there were consolidated negotiations: “The conferences compete with one another for media deals. That dynamic has caused them to get less money, per viewer, than pro sports do. The NBA has about half as many viewers as college football, but they get twice as much money, which is crazy, but it’s all because of this legal setup that we have. That needs to change. Everybody needs to come together, pool their media rights and do a single big deal that will give college football more control and more money. [...] Through that, you do some more fair media distribution system with respect to the media rights. Schools like Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, who have big followings, have big stadiums, big licensing deals will still have a big economic advantage. But, New Mexico or Wyoming or Toledo will still be able to sustain an athletic department under a system like that. [...] We need to rethink how we do college sports, in general.” (link)

Former San Jose State Women’s Volleyball student-athlete Blaire Fleming spoke to The New York Times Magazine’s Jason Zengerle about the challenges of last season as part of a wide-ranging article into the situation: “Do I think I’m the last? No. There’s going to be people in the future, whether it’s 10 years from now, five years from now, 20 years from now, there are going to be trans people in sports. They’re going to be there.” Lots more. (link)

Hitman Hoops reports that Memphis Men’s Basketball student-athlete Dain Dainja’s agency, Young Money APAA Sports, has decided to part ways with him after the “debacle” this week. Further details: “Dainja told his agency … to put out that he was hitting the portal. As soon as ESPN and others put out that he was hitting the portal, Memphis HC Penny Hardaway called Dainja about 5 minutes later confused, as he had been under the assumption that Dain was staying. It’s unclear what they discussed on the phone call, but Dainja then immediately hit up his agency asking them to take down the posts. It appears he changed his mind. Obviously, it was too late for the agency to do anything about it, so Dainja put out his own message, stating that ‘no decisions have been made’ yet. Dainja is still undecided on whether he’s entering the portal or not, but none of this matters if his waiver isn’t approved.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown posits that one skill set that will be universally requisite for Football GMs involves interpersonal skills, and NC State Asst. AD/Football GM Andy Vaughn tells Brown: “A lot of NFL GMs aren’t experts in that department (contracts), either. They’ve just done it for so long, and the system is set up, so they can know what can be tweaked and what can’t. How many people are redlining an NFL contract? They’re probably working within a small subset of that contract. The majority of the P4 institutions are state schools, which means you’re dealing with state funds, right? So a university general counsel builds a template and went through that contract with a fine-tooth comb. They need to protect the state’s money because they have a lot more regulation, more oversight, than a collective may have. … But in my opinion, the guys who have been doing this in college for a long time, like myself or [Ohio State GM Mark Pantoni] will have an easier curve to learn the numbers and how the cap works…because the college system isn’t exactly like the NFL.” (link)

Downtown Lawrence Inc. Executive Director Andrew Holt says the organization supports Kansas’ Gateway Project, but notes: “We feel that it will really be positive in the truest sense if there is an enhanced corridor between KU, the Gateway Project and downtown.” To that end, Jayhawks Deputy AD for External Affairs and Revenue Generation Jason Booker explains the athletic department would like to incorporate downtown Lawrence more closely in its football game-day programming. For example, Booker says KU wants to send its band, cheer squad, mascots and athletes from other sports into downtown to raise awareness on Friday nights; bring buskers and balloon artists to game days; and establish a series of downtown concerts to pair with Saturday’s game action, which KU would promote during games and on social media. “Could we do something outside the Granada one Saturday, and then move it down to the other end maybe outside of Jefferson’s the next weekend, doing kind of a local concert series after every game so that people know, ‘Hey, I know something’s going on downtown, I’m not sure exactly what it is, but I know my plans are (that) after the game, we’re always going to find our way down there.'” (link)

Western Michigan’s men’s hockey national championship should be a “tantalizing reminder” to Bowling Green of what’s possible, according to the Toledo Blade’s David Briggs, who writes: “I have long argued that Bowling Green should go all-in hockey, but here is real-life testimony to the possibilities that remain right there within its glove-hand reach. The reality: As the rest of the collegiate athletics enterprise continues to go mad — and the oceanic divide between the haves and have-nots in football and basketball just keeps widening — men’s hockey is the one sport with cultural resonance in which an otherwise mid-major school can compete for a national title. That doesn’t mean Bowling Green should disinvest in football or basketball, although a reprioritizing wouldn’t be the worst thing for some schools.” Additionally, Briggs submits that hockey has cultural currency: “A school could invest a bunch of money to contend for championships in, say, fencing or water polo. That would be an amazing accomplishment; it would not be a stirring communal one. Hockey matters at Bowling Green. It’s a thread of its DNA that connects students, alums, and donors, and it adds real vitality to the campus experience.” Furthermore, while Bowling Green’s enrollment is healthy, Briggs contends the Falcons have the “same electrifying opportunity” to increase it, as the Broncos have. A former Loyola Chicago student-athlete has filed a proposed class action accusing a former Michigan football coach of “orchestrating a years-long cyber sexual assault by hacking into university athletic databases and staling intimate photos and medical data of over 150,000 students, and asserting that the university and its vendor enabled the breach.” More behind the Law360 paywall. Fox Sports SVP of Strategy & Analytics Ben Valenta thinks the key to success in sports media is creating a sense of “belonging.” Valenta, on The Varsity podcast with Puck’s John Ourand, “Sports are entertaining, but they are not entertainment. Sports is the business of belonging. That’s how this business works. So if we frame it that way, and we frame it properly, then every question, every challenge, every opportunity that comes across [San Francisco Giants President/CEO] Larry [Baer’s] desk, he’s thinking about differently as a result of that framing. And we’re getting closer to the heart of why consumers actually engage in this space. Why they give their money to the businesses in the space.” To bolster his point, Valenta pointed to this year’s NBA ratings: “There was a lot of coverage paid to how the ratings were dipping for the NBA. And there were a lot of commentators talking about, ‘What could be the problem? What’s wrong with the NBA? How can we fix the NBA?’ And because they were framing the question in an entertainment lens, they naturally arrive at entertainment answers. And those entertainment answers are all about, ‘Well, there’s too many three-pointers.’ As if that’s the reason people engage in the first place. And it’s not.” (link)

Florida State Athletics & Legends responded to the tragedy on campus late last week by serving hundreds of meals to students just hours after the incident. Seminoles AD Michael Alford: “It's such a tight-knit community, such a great family. That's what FSU is. That's what separates us from everybody else. And we're one. We're going to reach out. We have that unconquered spirit, and we're going to do everything we can to make sure that our students are taken care of. [...] We're family ... You come to school here, you walk this campus. It's different. It's got a different feeling. The people are just different. Everyone supports one another, student athletes support and do things on campus, and different clubs. Same as our students who come and support our student athletes and come to our events. It's just a special campus to walk around and see how happy everyone is all the time. And for this tragic event to happen, anything we can do to give back, to have a hot meal and feel safe, we're going to do that.” (link)

More from Athletes.org Co-Founder Jim Cavale as he talks about AO’s role in the industry moving forward. Cavale says of the potential of an antitrust exemption through Congress: “They’re not going to get it. Is anything really going to pass right now from Congress? It could be a bill for world peace from the Republicans, seven Democrats in the Senate ain’t voting for it.” Absent that, Cavale notes that collective bargaining is the only remaining option to set rules without getting sued. “I think there’s a fear of employment happening, which is one big fear. Another fear is it’s giving up a little bit of power and doing things collaboratively with the athletes instead of on an island. I think the political fear of what's my governor going to say, how’s my president going to feel about this? But at some point something’s got to give and I think this Nico [Iamaleava] situation is foreshadowing many, many more like it.” Full interview. (link)

Colorado announces plans to add a statue for former Football HC Bill McCartney outside of Folsom Field. More: “A project two full years in the making, the statue will stand 8.5 feet tall in total and consist of a bronze statue on a granite base. It is designed by Brian Hanlon of Hanlon Sculpture Studios, who also designed the statue of Ralphie and her handlers that stands outside the UC Health Champions Center. It'll be just the second statue outside Folsom Field in its 101-year history, joining a bust of the stadium's namesake, Fred Folsom, which adorns the stadium's south side.” (link)

Nebraska plans to hold a special spring scrimmage for players who will not make the 105-man roster, and Huskers HC Matt Rhule explains: "We have some guys that will be playing their last time in that stadium. We have some guys that are battling to make that 105. I have a bunch of guys that, if they can't play here, they need some tape to go somewhere else, so I've waited until after the portal closed on that Saturday. The portal closes on Friday, so it won't affect it. The guys that are cemented in their spots, they're not going to play. Some other guys might ask to play, or not, but those guys that are battling – some of them are twos but want to prove that they're a one - we have a bunch of those guys. So I'm going to put the ball down a little bit and we're going to play some live football. … I just decided, when [the NCAA] decided it was going to be 105. I owe it to those kids to give them one last chance to go out there and put some stuff on tape. Then, if they're not going to make it, we'll send that tape to all the schools they want, and they'll have more tape to send out, but I hope our fans come out and watch those kids." (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner offers a solution to football’s competition calendar, starting with “eliminating the month-long spring practice sessions entirely. Instead, the NCAA should follow the NFL model and conduct a series of Organized Team Activities (OTAs), which are essentially practices without contact. Let the schools hold multi-day OTAs in both March and April with the flexibility to have joint practices against opposing teams. Give the players a break in May, then allow a week-long OTA session in June with partial contact (i.e., helmets and shoulder pads). That should prepare the players physically for the next stage in the calendar overhaul: Start training camp in late July, instead of early August, and cut the duration from four weeks to three.” By doing so, the regular season could start on what is now Week 0 and conference championships could be held in late November; however, Wilner acknowledges that “wouldn’t create enough space to roll the national title back to Jan. 1. Either a second week must be cut or the postseason schedule needs to be condensed. (Last season, the CFP spanned 32 days, from Dec. 20-Jan. 20.) It’s tricky, and there’s a far better chance the sport is unable to move the title game all the way to Jan. 1. But even the second week in January would be preferable to finishing in the second half of the month. The NFL is expected to eventually expand the regular season to 18 games, which would create more ratings competition — and fewer broadcast windows — for the current version of the CFP. Far better to avoid the gorilla than stand in its way.” (link)

Have any NFL teams asked Miami (FL) QB Cam Ward about opting out of the second half of the Pop-Tarts Bowl against Iowa State? “No discussion at all. At the end of the day, it’s March; the bowl game was in December. At some point, you’ve got to move on. I’ve never lived my life in the past.” The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman wonders if the stigma surrounding bowl opt-outs has subsided, and Houston Texans HC DeMeco Ryans remarks: “Each player has his right to opt out or do whatever he wants to do. We’ll evaluate the full process. I don’t think it comes down to one particular game. When we are evaluating guys here at the combine, our scouts, they’ve been watching these guys since they were freshmen. So, we have a lot of history with these guys, not just one decision of a guy opting out.” Seattle Seahawks GM John Schneider adds: “They’re all evaluated on an individual basis. Every circumstance is different. It depends on what’s going on with the player at the school. Where he is medically, it’s just part of the evaluation process, good or bad.” (link)

SBJ’s Bret McCormick examines how the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Cavs Rewards loyalty program works and explains that Cavs Rewards is “novel for using Uptop’s credit/debit card-linking tech to expand the program’s reach beyond the geographical barriers that have limited these programs in the past. Fans add their preferred plastic to their Cavs Rewards profile and accumulate rewards points from any spending on that credit or debit card inside Rocket Arena or at Cavs Rewards partner locations out in the world. Additionally, if Cavs Rewards members buy a team partner product, like a Michelob Ultra at a random bar, they can upload their purchase receipt and still get rewards points.” Launched earlier this year, the program already has 18K account holders, including 4K who signed up when the Cavs clinched a spot in the playoffs. Further, more than 3M transactions have been captured, and the program has already grown the team’s fan database by 50%. Cavs VP/Digital Products Georgia Sapounas tells McCormick: “Not just gamified. Not just gimmicky. Much more tangible rewards, whether you’re local or live somewhere else in the country. It’s really taking it to the next level.” Outside the Cavs’ organization, McCormick points out that “thanks to the card-linking, sponsors get more specific data than they have in the past, based on anonymized data that shows spending with partner brands and locations, as well as a lift in visitors to their stores. One of the rewards partner locations has seen a more than 50% lift in visits per Cavs Reward fan compared to before the fan joined the Cavs Rewards program. Another specific partner’s location has seen the equivalent of roughly $150K in spending related to Cavs Rewards.” Sapounas: “We’ve already seen significant six-figure revenue via partnership integrations, and there is a path to reach seven figures in the next year.” (link)
