Neumann held a press conference yesterday regarding its move to the MAC. President Chris Domes: “One of the things I am really excited about is that all of our varsity sports and some of our club sports will be under one conference umbrella. That is a strategic and important move for us. This will be the first time in 25 years that Neumann University will have a single conference for all of our varsity sports. … This is a march toward strengthening our university with great facilities, with an exceptional commitment to the student experience, making sure we have quality in both the support of our students but also mission integration as part of the athletic experience.” AD John Krimmel: “When you look at the college landscape right now and college athletics, you see programs being cut. You see other things happening that aren’t as positive and it’s exciting for us to make such a positive and strong step forward as an athletic department to really put us in a position to be successful for many, many years to come. […] I think this puts us in a strong position. When you look at NPI rankings, when you look at the potential for multi-bid conferences and automatic bids into the NCAA tournament, this puts us in a strong position from an athletic perspective. It gives a great advantage to our coaches from a recruiting standpoint. Being able to go out and recruit, now that we will be members of the MAC, puts us at a big advantage in the recruiting world.” More. (link)

The NCAA’s national office exceeded its financial goals for the fiscal year, and $55M of the resulting budget surplus will be used to offset payments for damages in the House settlement. Doing so would reduce back damages for each conference this upcoming fiscal year by 33%. The NCAA explains this decision to “direct the surplus to reduce the cost burden was made in consultation with South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley, who raised financial concerns of some schools that are not in autonomy conferences.” NCAA President Charlie Baker: "Thanks to financial reforms at the NCAA, the national office will be able to cover a larger share of the back damages, resulting in significant savings for our schools in this first year. After discussing the cost implications with many schools in DI, and after productive discussions on the matter with Attorney General Jackley, we are pleased to invest these surplus funds back into DI athletic departments." (link); The agreement is part of a settlement with South Dakota and Jackley, and Sportico’s Daniel Libit reports: “According to Jackley, the agreement also grants the attorney general the opportunity to collaborate with the NCAA on potential future reductions, while insuring that monies the schools receive from the newly established DI women’s basketball fund would remain untouched. Additionally, the NCAA has committed to continuing to host championship events in South Dakota.” (link)

The NCAA spent $450K on lobbying during the first quarter of 2025, almost double the amount it spent during the first quarter of 2024, according to Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich. NCAA SVP for External Affairs Tim Buckley did not comment on what specifically accounted for the increase but told Christovich there are “some threats to college sports only Congress can address, and the Association is advocating with student-athletes and their schools for a bipartisan solution.” Christovich goes on to report that between January and March, the NCAA paid $90K to Brownstein Hyatt, its longtime lobbying firm. … The NCAA also spent $90K on lobbying activities from theGroup DC, another heavy-hitter the governing body hired in January. theGroup DC represents major clients such as Pepsico and UnitedHealth Group.” Additionally, the NCAA paid $270K for its own in-house lobbyists. “The NCAA normally spends between $120K and $140K on its in-house lobbying efforts.” (link)

NAIA President/CEO Jim Carr sat down with NAIA.ticker’s Anthony Grassi to dive into the association’s recent “The Right Way to Play” campaign and share his thoughts around the future of the education-based model for athletics. “For a very large percentage of colleges and universities out there that want to operate pretty high-level athletics programs, the education-based model is the right model and really the only model that can work for those institutions. I'm certainly not opposed to student-athletes at the highest level getting compensated in ways that it looks like they are, but you get past the first 60, 70, 80 schools at the top of the list and it's hard one, for people to support financially that kind of model, but also if rules get passed that take us out of this idea that athletes are there to get an education and that's the primary reason, and so if you get rid of advancing towards a degree and the restrictions on number of seasons and years that you can be there in order to play those seasons it's going to turn into a model that's just not going to work for most of those colleges and universities and that would just be a shame because I think most people in the industry or probably all of us in the industry know that that aspect of it is very important and students get opportunities, probably a lot of them, who otherwise might not go to college or might not get a chance to get a degree and get in because of athletics and we don't want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. That model works for almost all schools, and we need to make sure that we champion it. We're committed to working with, even though we're competitors in some ways with, DII or DIII and NJCAA as being committed to this model.
