SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey spoke during the CAA World Congress of Sports yesterday in Nashville and said the House settlement is “not the end of the story. It is a chapter. It’s a necessary chapter. And one of the realities around other ideas related to college sports is they have started at a point ignoring what we have to deal with from the past. … The coping that you hear is we’re trying to figure out what we have to deal with from our past. That’s the chapter we’re in right now.” Regarding the clearinghouse component of the settlement, Sankey remarked: “That’s sensible. That’s not taking away opportunities. That’s supporting healthy opportunities. ... Part of the challenge is there’s really not a model that exists for that in the professional world because I can walk down the grocery store aisle in Skaneateles, New York, at Top Supermarket and Josh Allen has a breakfast cereal for sale. That’s pretty cool. Doesn’t have any logos. Doesn’t have any marks, but that’s name, image and likeness activity. If some young college person wants to market a breakfast cereal, knock yourself out. That’s what it was supposed to be, and we’ve lost sight of that reality.” Also from Sankey: “Not that anyone listens to my football media days speeches, but in 2019, the line was, ‘When you change the economics of college sports, you alter the Olympic development program in this country.’ Part of the Congressional conversation [around standardized NIL legislation] is that recognition.” (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork is calling for changes to the college football calendar, including the College Football Playoff and the transfer portal. “We've had so many disruptions over the last five-plus years that I think the time is now to not be reactive, be proactive. When we had this setting here with the commissioners, our job was to provide feedback on what it was like to go through the 12-team playoff…but it all gets impacted by the calendar. I felt it was important to lay that out with everyone in the room to say, separate from the CFP process, if we don't fix our calendar as an industry, then we're going to continue to have unintended consequences.” Bjork also noted that because OSU started its spring semester on January 6, the Buckeyes had to apply for waivers around countable athletically-related activities in the CFP. Texas, on the other hand, did not have to apply for such waivers because UT starts classes later. "When you don't have class, there is no limit to CARA hours. It created some disadvantages. It all goes back to what's countable CARA hours, NCAA structure. The portal is the next big conversation after the House case and truly what kind of rules can we set? Will we have the authority around transfer rules to set some parameters?" Regarding the transfer portal window, Bjork would like to move to a 10-day period in May for all fall sports, telling ESPN this will align with revenue-sharing if the House settlement is approved because he expects most student-athletes to sign their rev-share agreements in June. Cal Poly AD Don Oberhelman says of the decision to discontinue swimming and diving: “It’s painful. It causes anger and a lot of misdirected rage and things like that. It’s an awful situation to go through, but we didn’t go into it lightly.” Oberhleman cited multiple issues, including budget reduction, the House settlement and Cal Poly’s large number of sports offerings, as factors in the decision. “We’re really, really large and we’re trying to hold on. What it’s starting to do is impact the student-athlete experience.” Oberhelman indicated that the 8% budget cuts to California State universities are impacting athletics, and that’s on top of the $550K the House settlement will cost the Mustangs each year for the next 12 years. “We have to start tightening our belts and figure out how we can function in this new reality without further cuts. … This is just the beginning rather than the end of what these new realities are going to look like for us. We’re doing exactly what we’re supposed to do, which is prepare for those realities, uncomfortable and painful as they may be. We have to make sure our sports are primed for success, and we were just too big at that point in time.” (link)

North Carolina Superior Court Judge Matthew T. Houston declined to grant Duke football student-athletes Ryan Smith, Tre'Shon Devones and Cam Bergeron and North Carolina football student-athlete JJ Jones a preliminary injunction for an extra year of eligibility and explained that “I think the evidence and record at this point is not sufficient to support a finding that there is a likelihood of prevailing on the merits and it's largely an issue of what the record supports. … I don't think, at this point, that there's sufficient, adequate information in the record to support a finding…as to an unreasonable restraint of trade." Diana Florence, an attorney for the players: “It just seems incomprehensible that one more year for various reasons that each of them deserves that they shouldn’t be granted that, and we’re hopeful that as we can fully present our case that we will be able to prove that.” (link)

San Diego unveiled its new $35M Basketball Performance Center, which features a full-length court with a viewing terrace, an additional shooting court, sport-specific strength and conditioning room, sports medicine and hydrotherapy facilities, team locker rooms and lounges, a film room, and men’s and women’s basketball staff offices. Men’s Basketball HC Steve Lavin: “In a sense, this is a re-launch. We’re in a revolutionary era in college athletics, and it’s the first time since I’ve been here where we’ve had alignment with roster space, funding with NIL and revenue-share, and a state-of-the-art facility. When you put those three together — with USD’s tradition, being a world-class academic institution, and our location in San Diego — it’s a pretty difficult situation to not be impressed with if you’re a student-athlete or parents of a prospect. So, it does lift us. It elevates our programs, respectively, in terms of the competitive landscape that we’re in.” (link)

The NCAA found that Fordham “failed to monitor its men's basketball program when eight prospects were provided impermissible benefits during official visits and the program violated publicity-before-signing rules with 24 prospects. As a result, Trevonn Morton, director of men's basketball operations, and Keith Urgo, then the men's basketball head coach, violated ethical conduct rules, and Urgo violated head coach responsibility rules. Additional violations occurred when Fordham football assistant coach James Lenahan engaged in sports betting activities. Lenahan's case was resolved separately via negotiated resolution in December 2024.” Penalties include, but are not limited to, a $35,000 fine plus 2% of the men's basketball program budget, a two-year show-cause for Urgo, including a suspension from 12% of the men's basketball regular-season contests, a one-year show-cause for former AD/current St. John’s AD Ed Kull, a three-year show-cause order for Morton, and a vacation of team wins and records over the course of the two seasons in which the ineligible players competed. Disney CEO Bob Iger during the CAA World Congress of Sports remarked that the launch of ESPN’s DTC Flagship product “might be the biggest move since getting the full season of the NFL. … One of the things I love about the product to come, that you’re developing, is that we will build into that elements that will be tailormade for young generations of sports fans. They like multiscreen experiences.” Iger added that “I know how important exposure, distribution and access to consumers is, and that doesn’t come cheaply, and it doesn’t come easily. It’s not always about if you build it, they will come. You have to build it, and you have to figure out a means of delivering it to consumers that are both very pro-consumer and pro-sports, meaning the organization, and obviously pro the business that is covering those sports. … Technology is a sports fan’s heaven in many respects. We’re now entering a new age where the technology side of our business has actually risen to a level that is almost equal to the entertainment side -- but probably an unbelievable partner to entertainment -- more so than ever before. And to me, that’s very exciting. And also, the ability to package, which we’ve done with our entertainment offerings with our sports offerings, whether we were dealing with multichannel operators or whether we’re dealing with consumers that want to buy streaming services, I think has real value both for us as distributors and also for consumers.” (link)

The Athletic’s Chris Vannini and Scott Dochterman report that the Rose Bowl kickoff change is “expected to be a permanent one: Although the [College Football Playoff] bowl contract for 2026 and beyond has not yet been finalized, Rose Bowl officials said they’re planning for this kickoff time to remain in place. For years in which the Rose Bowl would be a semifinal in the expanded CFP, game officials have told the CFP they would rather remain a quarterfinal with their typical New Year’s Day slot.” Rose Bowl Chief Administrative Officer Kevin Ash: “We’ve thought it through. We’ve known this could be coming. Basically, we’ll sit there in the third quarter and play things out, see how they’ll play out later in the game. There are some advantages. A quick game, you may get people out of there during sunlight and into their cars. There are some positives.” (link)

The IRS last week denied another NIL collective 501(c)(3) status, and James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis notes: “The IRS might be under-resourced, but they’re still denying 501(c)(3) status to NIL collectives. This is your friendly reminder that student-athletes are not a charitable class and payments are considered non-incidental private benefits.” The name of the collective has been redacted. (link)

The NCAA spent $450K on lobbying during the first quarter of 2025, almost double the amount it spent during the first quarter of 2024, according to Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich. NCAA SVP for External Affairs Tim Buckley did not comment on what specifically accounted for the increase but told Christovich there are “some threats to college sports only Congress can address, and the Association is advocating with student-athletes and their schools for a bipartisan solution.” Christovich goes on to report that between January and March, the NCAA paid $90K to Brownstein Hyatt, its longtime lobbying firm. … The NCAA also spent $90K on lobbying activities from theGroup DC, another heavy-hitter the governing body hired in January. theGroup DC represents major clients such as Pepsico and UnitedHealth Group.” Additionally, the NCAA paid $270K for its own in-house lobbyists. “The NCAA normally spends between $120K and $140K on its in-house lobbying efforts.” (link)

The College Football Playoff (CFP) and ESPN today announced dates, kick times and broadcast information for the CFP quarterfinals, semifinals and national championship game for the 2025-26 edition of the postseason event. The 2025-26 schedule includes a New Year’s Day tripleheader of quarterfinal games on ESPN with new kickoff times: the Capital One Orange Bowl (noon ET), the Rose Bowl Game presented by Prudential
(4 p.m.) and the Allstate Sugar Bowl (8 p.m.) will all start earlier than their traditional windows. CFP Executive Director Rich Clark: “All three bowls shifting their start times allows us to place each game in an ideal window on New Year’s Day and provide the optimal viewing experience.” Tournament of Roses CEO David Eads tells The Athletic’s Chris Vannini: "We’ve known over the past four or five years our game has run late. We’ve had overtimes, which has thrown off the Sugar Bowl and their timing. … It’s the right role for us to play [to move up the start time from 5 p.m. to 4 p.m.].” (link, link)

USCAH President/Big Ten Conference CMO Dr. Jim Borchers joins Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss the next "arms race" in intercollegiate athletics: student-athlete health, wellness and safety. Borchers offers insight into the impact of an expanded championship season, NIL and revenue-sharing, and the transfer portal on athlete wellness, Borchers also addresses issues of staffing, resource development and medical consent, including ongoing legal challenges facing the enterprise today. When structuring medical teams, Borchers emphasizes the need for athletic trainers to do the job they’re hired to do, “which is caring for athletes. Let’s remove the job creep from an athletic training job – the things that really someone else could be doing or are not really necessary for the athletic trainer to do. And then, let's provide some boundaries around making certain that they can do that well, do it safely and focus on the athlete. And then I think we have to think innovatively, as I've mentioned, and provide other resources that allow athletic trainers to make certain that they are functioning at the top of their license, but that they have other resources that can help with the health care of the athlete. Look, we know that personnel doesn’t solve all problems, but without good personnel, you can’t provide good care.” Full conversation on Connect. (link)

Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek explains that he has "spoken with the leadership team at Arkansas Edge and expressed my support in their pursuit to enforce their rights under any agreement violated by our student-athletes moving forward. We appreciate Edge's investment in our student-athletes and acknowledge the enforcement of these agreements is vital in our new world of college athletics. We look forward to continued dialogue with all parties in resolving these matters." Yurachek’s comments come on the heels of Hogs QB Madden Iamaleava announcing he was headed to join his brother at UCLA. (link)

The Post & Courier’s Jon Blau reports that Clemson AD Graham Neff and Men’s Basketball HC Brad Brownell “have had many talks about program ‘energy’ and Clemson's ultimate trajectory — fiery back-and-forths where the volume rises and they each rise out of their chairs. … Brownell is keenly aware of narratives about his program. If anything gets him curmudgeonly, it's how readily people forget Clemson sits near the front of the pack in ACC wins over the last handful of years.” Neff tells Blau that “it’s a sports entertainment industry. There's all these fundamentals of a program and how you go about it. Scoreboard, obviously, but also the energy and the atmosphere of our consumers. That matters. That's our customer. We can't dismiss that." Meanwhile, Neff will submit to the Board of Trustees this week a second contract extension for Brownell in as many seasons and says: "I'm more excited for what the next six years look like, if we're matching it to contract length, than the past six years. And the last six years for Clemson basketball have been as good as any stretch in program history, right?" (link)

Duke AD Nina King and VP/Vice Provost for Climate and Sustainability Toddi Steelman are leading the new Athletics Climate Team (ACT) to support the Duke Climate Commitment. The team consists of more than 40 members, including student-athletes, coaches and staff, and its mission is to “align Duke Athletics with the university’s climate goals, and leverage the resources, platform and people of Duke Athletics to promote sustainable practices.” (link)

The most expensive football rosters are now in the $40M ballpark, according to Indiana HC Curt Cignetti, who tells CBS’ John Talty: "This is an unprecedented couple days, weeks, where everybody's waiting on this rev-share, and the five or six out there that have unlimited NIL resources, it's kind of scary for everybody else. I think our little pot of gold is pretty nice, but we're not at $40M. Or $30M. Or even $25M." As for who the biggest spenders are, Cignetti explains: “Right now I understand that is Oregon, Ohio State, Texas…Texas Tech because of their oil money. I think Notre Dame's up there pretty good right now, too. Miami, of course. … Those people are kind of playing their own game, but you've got to be in that next tier. There are enough good ones out there. You've got to be able to retain your good ones and then go get what you need." One NIL agent says of Texas Tech’s portal approach: "They are insane. They are crazy and do not care. I think they are like, we have one shot before this gets figured out to build a team, and we'll just overpay people." (link)
