Arkansas State’s AD search will be led by Chancellor Dr. Todd Shields and ASU System President Dr. Brendan Kelly, who have said that while they will move as quickly as possible, there is no timeline to complete the search. Kelly: “I'm totally confident that the opportunity to lead athletics at A-State is an incredibly desirable one, and we will be flush with excellent options to continue to build the Red Wolves program.” (link)

Interesting nuggets from Kentucky’s official release on the athletic department’s transition to Champions Blue LLC. Cats President Eli Capilouto: “We believe this is an innovative approach — a new structure and governance model that thoughtfully contemplates how we strengthen Athletics, protect and promote the University and open up new opportunities for growth.” Leadership structure: “The Champions Blue Board, a public entity, will meet regularly to advise President Capilouto and UK Director of Athletics Mitch Barnhart on strategic directions and opportunities for revenue growth. Opportunities could include developments such as expanded premium seating and fan amenities in Kroger Field or public-private partnerships to develop revenue-generating ventures.” The full UK Board of Trustees will formalize the move with a vote today. Athletics Admin consultant KC Smurthwaite believes the “next round of conference realignment centers on Sacramento State or the WAC.” Smurthwaite points out that while the Hornets have announced they will become independent, “buried in the Big Sky Conference constitution is a clause stating that all members must be football-playing members. There was a loophole for Idaho when they were left without an FBS home for a few years, but as it stands now, I haven’t heard anything indicating the Big Sky is backing down from that requirement. The DMs are open. It’s been floated on social media — and I can confirm — that the exit fee to leave the Big Sky recently increased to $1M. At least one school voted against it, and I’ll let you guess who.” Smurthwaite goes on to point out that “now that the WAC is back on shaky ground, there are whispers that the Green and Gold could land in the Big West, Summit, WCC — or possibly work something out to remain in the Big Sky. … If it’s the WAC, it could calm the waters a bit — emphasis on could — but Tarleton State hasn’t been shy about its FBS aspirations. There’s also underlying tension among the Texas schools in both the Southland and WAC. Some feel not everyone is equally invested — which, of course, is what caused the WAC to start poaching Southland schools in the first place a few years ago. I’ve heard from multiple folks that everything is on the table for the WAC — even rebranding it as an all-Texas league. The Lone Star State WAC schools are driving that bus.” Smurthwaite adds that he believes the Big Sky is unlikely to expand, but if it does, “whatever school they invite will accept — but it won’t be loud. It’ll be a quiet, deliberate move.” More. (link)

Despite numerous facility projects during his tenure, including the coming $90M Nayden Center For Academic Excellence at Bailey Student-Athlete Success Center, Connecticut AD David Benedict says the Huskies won’t slow down: “Every single student-athlete now will share in a similar experience. When I got here, just football and men's and women's basketball were. No one really complained because most of the student-athletes had a bad experience from a facilities standpoint. The majority of the 600 student-athletes were all in bad facilities, so no one was complaining. Once you start building nice facilities for portions of that group, everyone starts raising their hand saying, ‘When are you going to fix ours?' [...] We've made a huge leap forward with our facilities. It took a lot of time and a lot of people. I think when we get [Bailey] done, and a handful of other [ongoing] projects, in my mind — I'm not talking about size and scale — but if you compare our facility plan we would definitely be in the top 50 in the country, doesn't matter what conference.” (link)

North Alabama AD Josh Looney joined AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to dive into the concept of “investing in relationships” and the practical applications of relationship-building for departmental success. Looney and Brown also discuss Looney’s arrival during the final year of the Lions’ transition to Division I, with Looney explaining his message to the department when he arrived: “Do not slow down for me. I am catching up to you. You guys have had a great three years of transition. We’re going to implement some things and culture pieces that we want, but it is my job to catch up to you. You keep going and sprinting. … And then you start investing in those relationships and you start understanding who in that department is ready for more leadership, who are key to success.” Looney goes on to explain his three cultural pillars: in addition to operating with a “no jerks” mindset when hiring and developing a staff, Looney’s pillars include measuring and celebrating wins in the classroom, in the field of competition and in the community and operating as the “enemy of the status quo.” Full Q&A. More from Clemson Football HC Dabo Swinney with The Athletic’s Seth Emerson. Swinney cautions against professionalizing college football to the point that it’s an NFL minor league. “Football is not a game of longevity. 98% percent of these kids aren’t playing pro football, so we need to really help them maximize their opportunity here. But we need to equip them for life. If you’re playing football at 27, you’re an old man. And I just feel like and worry that the game is going to use a lot of these kids right now, because the adults have kind of left the room. The adults are all downstairs sipping wine, and we’ve put a bunch of kids up in the room with fireworks and gas and knives and we don’t think anything bad is going to happen. And I just think we can be better. And I think eventually we will be better. And I think we’re really close to that.” (link)

Michigan announces the season ticket and Preferred Seat Contribution (PSC) pricing for the 2025-26 men's basketball season. U-M is modernizing its pricing tiers for the first time since Crisler Center's renovation in 2012, with the average combined season ticket and PSC price increasing by 9.6%. Michigan will move from 11 pricing tiers to 19 to “better align with the secondary market. After extensive analysis of secondary market pricing, it was determined that Michigan's season ticket and PSC pricing were undervalued. Last year alone, the average resale of season tickets on the secondary market was 85 percent higher than face value.” In the release, the Wolverines specifically cite the $20.5M House payments and a $5.9M uptick in new scholarships as factors. In 2022, ESPN aired one College GameDay for Women’s College Basketball, in 2023 there were three, in 2024 five and there would have been five this past season as well if not for one of the games getting cancelled due to snow. Co-host Elle Duncan: “We’re hoping for even more, right? The hope is that we’re just going to do more of them. I definitely think that there is a desire. The sponsorship is there. So, it’s really just about logistics. But that’s always been our hope, to just try to do more, but scale in a way that makes sense.” Co-host Andraya Carter adds: “More shows, bigger crowds, more things.” And Co-host Chiney Ogwumike agrees: “There’s a camaraderie within women’s basketball where we’re all uplifting each other that I feel is very special and very unique. So, the goal is to have more GameDays.” More on the history of the show and potential opportunities for its future. (link)

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark tells Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger there were no decisions made during today’s College Football Playoff Management Committee meetings but notes CFP format and governance talks continued. CFP Executive Director Rich Clark adds that there was no decision on moving to straight seeding with the 2025 playoff, but the discussion continued on this year’s format as well as new ideas for 2026 and beyond. Learfield is set to announce a reorganization of its leadership team, according to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, who reports the “company is slated to add Arkansas State AD Jeff Purinton and Paciolan President Deana Barnes as EVPs. The pair will be part of a new four-person EVP team that also includes Learfield staffers Andrew Wheeler and Meghan Heinchon (Wheeler is currently an EVP on the sports properties side, while Heinchon is being promoted from SVP to EVP). That quartet will oversee multimedia rights teams of senior leaders, GM and local personnel and report directly to Sports Properties President Kim Damron. Ben Mathan, Learfield’s Chief Strategy Officer, will oversee Paciolan on an interim basis in the wake of Barnes’ move.” Damron tells Portnoy: “What we found [over the last year-and-a-half] was we were engaging with our clients way more often than we were in the past, when things were status quo. We looked at it and said, ‘What do we need to do?’ And it was to get senior leaders in the organization to work closely with the ADs.” Purinton, Portnoy adds, will “oversee Learfield’s SEC business. Barnes will handle the Big Ten and Pac-12, while Wheeler will be over the company’s Big 12 and ACC partners. Heinchon, a former GM for properties at East Carolina and Vanderbilt, will serve as point person for Learfield’s Group of Five clients.” (link)

Kentucky is moving toward housing its athletics department under a new university corporate entity that school officials say will improve their flexibility to handle rising financial pressure from the House settlement, according to USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz, who reports the new entity – Champions Blue LLC – is being modeled on structures under which its hospitals and other medical services enterprises are housed. Berkowitz notes that UK had nearly $202M in operating revenue and nearly $197M in operating expenses during FY24, which puts the Wildcats among the top 15 public schools in both categories. UK AD Mitch Barnhart expects that expense figure to increase by around $50M by FY26 due to the House settlement ($20-23M), more scholarships ($3-4M), inflation and other spending. Barnhart also notes the new entity would enable the athletics department to undertake a variety of business development opportunities and to offer pay and benefit programs to employees – and potentially to student-athletes – that it cannot under the current setup. Barnhart: “You've heard other departments talk about business districts and things like that. And those are conversations that are all on the table but really difficult to perform in our current structure. And so this gives us more flexibility to do that. … We’ve got some ideas on some things that we're going to have to run the traps on, so to speak, to say, ‘Hey, does this work? Does it make sense? Can it produce the things we think are necessary for us to move forward? … In the old way of life, there were literally four to five buckets that you got all of your revenue from. We're going to have those four to five buckets become eight to 10 buckets, and we're going to have to figure out other ways to do our work.” (link)

Colorado State is revamping the Ram Club as part of CSU’s comprehensive Path to the Pac strategy for entering the Pac-12 in July of 2026. CSU will take a “three-pronged approach” in funding, creating the Ram Athletic Fund and McGraw Society in addition to the current sport-specific excellence funds. Rams AD John Weber: "We have nearly 400 student-athletes competing at the highest level of intercollegiate athletics. We will work tirelessly to provide them with every opportunity to maximize their potential. We need Ram Country's support for the Ram Club through the Ram Athletic Fund, sport-specific excellence funds and the McGraw Society. It is a direct way for all those who love the Rams to get involved. Colorado State is a world-class academic and research institution located in the greatest city in the country. Our mission is clear: to relentlessly pursue competitive and personal success, to courageously champion our university and to passionately connect with our community." (link)

Asked whether a college football super league will and/or should happen, Clemson Football HC Dabo Swinney replies: “Both.” He adds: “It’s not sustainable the way we are. It’s just a matter of time. It’s one of those things even though for some of us it’s really clear to see, we’ve just gotta go through it to get there.” Swinney, according to The Athletic’s Seth Emerson, envisions the top 40-50 programs joining forces, even if Big Ten and SEC will have to cede power and revenue. “Eventually money’s going to win the day. I think other dynamics and factors will eventually come into play. I just think people are eventually going to see the business opportunity involved, and it’s going to come down to brands, and TV viewership, and all of that type of stuff. More so than a league (you’re in right now). Eventually that’s where it’ll get to. Who knows when we’ll get there. Probably sooner rather than later.” (link)

Ole Miss Women’s Basketball HC Yolett McPhee-McCuin doesn’t mince words and calls the current system pay-for-play. “There’s a small group that’s getting NIL. If you don’t invest that, if you don’t know how to make that into $2.5M, you’re going to be broke.” (link)
